As world oil prices plummeted in the winter of 1985-86, George W. Bush faced the most serious crisis of his 11-year career as a West Texas oilman.
Spectrum 7, his exploration and development company, had reported a net loss of $1.6 million in 1985, due to the fast-deteriorating value of its holdings. As the price of oil fell from $25 to $9 a barrel, the firm was on its way to losing another $402,000 by mid-1986. Bush's company owed more than $3 million in bank loans and other debts with no hope of paying them off in time. His investors had disappeared.
On the cusp of his 40th birthday, Bush had two choices: Cut his staff to the bone, hunker down and pray for oil prices to climb before the banks foreclosed; or find a bigger company that was willing to scoop him up, debts and all. This time around, we are also likely to be running--but for our checkbooks.
The comet, a hunk of dusty ice, has been rendezvousing with us every 76 years since before recorded time. It will appear from November of this year to early February of 1986, when it will disappear behind the sun. On February 20, it will reappear, this time with a glowing tail. By early May it will no longer be visible to the naked eye. All that will remain will be an enormous blip on America's sales chart.

Thanks to his and his family's ties to wealthy investors around the country, including prominent Republicans, Bush was repeatedly able to raise money to invest in oil drilling, especially when prices were booming and tax breaks were inviting in the late 1970s. But connections could not help with the tricky business of picking profitable holes to drill, and Bush never made a big score.
In fact, Bush lost money for most of his well-connected investors. At the same time, the management fees and other expenses he collected from them kept him in business and enabled him to buy oil reserves for his company's own account, including the reserves that eventually attracted Harken's attention.

The inquiry became an issue in the 1994 governor's race when Richards, the incumbent Democrat, challenged its thoroughness, calling it "at best, incomplete, and at worst, a coverup."
Bush was prepared, having obtained a letter from a top SEC official, associate director for enforcement Bruce A. Hiler, a year earlier.
Dated Oct. 18, 1993, three weeks before Bush announced his candidacy for governor, the carefully worded letter was addressed to Jordan and said that "the investigation has been terminated as to the conduct of Mr. Bush, and that, at this time, no enforcement action is contemplated with respect to him."
Bush took that as vindication. "The SEC fully investigated the stock deal," he said in October 1994. "I was exonerated." Supporting Bush, the head of the SEC's enforcement division, William McLucas, went beyond the letter and stated publicly that "there was no case there."
Hiler, however, was more cautious. His statement said it "must in no way be construed as indicating that the party has been exonerated or that no action may ultimately result from the staff's investigation."

A review of George W. Bush’s 1998 tax return reveals that he reported the sale of his share of the Texas Rangers baseball team as a long term capital gain. As a result, he paid a tax on the more than $15 million proceeds at a tax rate of 20%, as opposed to the 39.6% rate on ordinary income. According to a press release dated June 18, 1998 from the Dallas Morning News, Bush paid $606,000 for about 1.8% of the team and became the managing general partner of B/R Rangers Associates, Ltd., a limited partnership that owned the team. Under the terms of the agreement, Mr. Bush was given an additional 10.2% of the proceeds as additional compensation if the team was sold. The incentive compensation became effective if the other partners received their entire investment back plus a 2% return per year.

Jonathan Bush said he offered to help. He'd been busy raising money as a one-man show for his brother George's presidential explorations under the name of the Fund for Limited Government and then became national finance co-chairman when the older Bush announced his candidacy on May 1, 1979. Integration: refers to the return of funds to the legitimate economy for later extraction.

Hide: to reflect the fact that cash is often introduced to the economy via commercial concerns which may knowingly or not knowingly be part of the laundering scheme, and it is these which ultimately prove to be the interface between the criminal and the financial sector
Move: clearly explains that the money launderer uses transfers, sales and purchase of assets, and changes the shape and size of the lump of money so as to obfuscate the trail between money and crime or money and criminal.
Invest: the criminal spends the money: he/she may invest it in assets, or in his/her lifestyle.

"Crossroads" (Parts one and two) are the nineteenth and twentieth episodes of the third season and season finale from the science fiction television series, Battlestar Galactica.
Caprica Six returns again to the opera house. The vision progresses further this time and Caprica Six sees herself, Baltar and Hera looking up at the glowing, robed apparitions of the Final Five Cylons looking down on them from a balcony above. Compelled by their own shared auditory hallucination, Tory, Colonel Tigh, Tyrol, and Anders converge on a secluded room on Galactica, where they all hum the melody together and come to the distressing conclusion that they are all Cylons. When power is restored, DRADIS identifies four Cylon basestars bearing down on the fleet and Admiral Adama orders general quarters. All of the newly discovered Cylons return to their posts but are wary of what they might do. As the other pilots scramble to their ships, Lee returns to his locker to grab his flight gear, despite having been removed from flight status.
As Lee launches in his Viper, the song that Tigh, Tory, Anders, and Tyrol have been hearing is played clearly as music for the scene: it is Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower". After launch, Apollo separates from the other alert Vipers to chase a blip on his DRADIS. In the nebula, he sees Starbuck in a Mark II Viper like the one she had been flying when he saw her crash. She pensively says "Hi Lee. Don't freak out, it's really me. It's going to be OK. I've been to Earth, I know where it is, and I'm going to take us there." The episode ends with a massive zoom out from the two Vipers, past the Colonial fleet and closing basestars and out of the galaxy, then a zoom back that ends with a view of Earth, specifically North America, from space.

I remember having dreams when I last slept but I can remember absolutely no details. Except, maybe something to do with my imaginary girlfriend, Lily. For a while I have been wondering if they can also manipulate my half-asleep dreams too. Those are those first dreams I remember having when I am drifting off to sleep. I have never really thought of them as dreams though, rather more like random thoughts that go through my mind as I drift off. Last night, I have two such thoughts that stuck with me when I woke up minutes or seconds later. The first one was of Senator Carl Levin standing in front of me either in an elevator or waiting for an elevator. He said something about how my "reading was correct." The second scene was of Lily telling me of some endearing quality about herself.
This imaginary girlfriend routine is kind of fun, but with all these actors around me, who knows what is the reality. What I really want to avoid is encouraging people to stalk women on TV. No one should take seriously the perceived affections of a person on TV. My hope is that this situation will end soon and then some third person will make arrangements where we can meet and I can determine if this was all my imagination.
Even if Lily is as nice in person as she seems to be on TV, I'm beginning to think I shouldn't pursue it. I've been feeling confident this thing could actually be real, but that is actually a real problem. So many people are watching what I do in private so they can try to mimic my success. If I talk to a pretty woman on TV while sitting in my living room and then end up spending the foreseeable future finding ways to make her smile in a real relationship, then there are going to be other people out there trying the same thing. And after that Tacoma Mall terrorist, I just think this is all a bad idea. As some jerk standing next to me the other day pointed out conspicuously secretive: It sucks to be me. And then there are all these people with the "priceless," "volume down," etc. bullshit.....when does it end? How are they finding out this stuff? Why can't they just all go away and if anybody has to monitor everything I do and write, why can't they just give that job to Lily? That would be pretty fun.

Very interesting dream that featured prominently my imaginary girlfriend, whom made me smile today. She told me in the dream "when I'm ready." That's what I was hoping to hear, but then, just like sitting in front of the tv, none of it is really real. There was at least one, maybe more, weird strange aspects to the dream, but I think it was just mischief on the part of the dream manipulator. I figured she was personally directing the dream and threw that in to screw with my head, or someone else was relaying her comments/whatever-however-it's-done to my sleeping mind. After awaking I was extremely annoyed at the people that are actively disturbing my sleep. I slept one time for almost 6 hours, but all the other times are no more than 3 hours every 12 hours or so. I'm going crazy here, I need some goddamned sleep.
And before the happy-time-with-my-imaginary-girlfriend segment of the dream, there was something about something collapsing that I didn't want to be around.

The part that almost makes it impossible to describe that dream as I want to is that there seemed to be a lot of nuance and emotion that I cannot even begin to articulate. The great part about the dream was that at the end, I realized the source of those great emotions was my wife. The character who represented her was someone that had been earlier riding in a car with me. There was some activity I was involved in that I can still see, but I don't understand what it means, and I don't feel like writing about it even though it probably all meant something. As for Phoebe, I walked into a room that looked almost like a restraunt because she and another woman were sitting at a booth-style table. In a nearby booth was a hologram of Marilyn Monroe and the two women giggled when the hologram effected a friendly demeanor as I approached and said "Hello, Elaine." That was funny to them but I don't really get it. Slightly before that, I was walking up to the woman, with feeling associated that I was seeing my girlfriend and I was going up to talk to her, and the closest person I can remember from my "memory" that she resembled was Tracey Grabski. She was wearing a U.S. Navy enlisted shirt that was white and short-sleeved. I want to say we were both in the Navy. I saw her rating badge on her sleeve and I made a comment about how I didn't know she was striking to be a Fire Controlman, as she had the rating badge of a FCSN, or E-3 Fire Controlman, on her shirt. She gave me a very endearing sideways look and said it wasn't her shirt. But there is a lot more detail and nuance than I can describe. It wasn't until the end of the dream I realized it was my shirt. And I am not sure if she actually spoke those words or whether she was lip-synching those words and I heard someone else speak those words. The next part I remember is that she was standing in front of me and I think she was going to kiss me but that was the woman who currently portrays the "Starbuck" character. There was some other stuff there at the end but it was more feelings than anything and it was about me getting to see my wife again sometime soon

The Quiet Earth is a 1985 New Zealand science fiction Doomsday film directed by Geoff Murphy and starring Bruno Lawrence, Alison Routledge and Pete Smith as three survivors of a cataclysmic disaster. It was based on the 1981 science fiction novel of the same name by Craig Harrison.
July 5th begins as a normal winter morning near Auckland, New Zealand. At 6:12 a.m., the Sun momentarily darkens and a red light surrounded by darkness is briefly seen (as if through a tunnel). The Sun then returns to normal.
Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) is a scientist working for Delenco, part of an international consortium working on "Project Flashlight", an ambitious energy experiment. He awakens abruptly in his bedroom, appearing somewhat surprised, gets dressed and drives into the city. On the way, he notices that everyone seems to have vanished. Investigating a fire, he discovers the wreckage of a jet, but there are no bodies inside, only empty seats with the seat belts still fastened.
He enters his underground laboratory workplace; a monitor displays the message "Project Flashlight Complete". The mass disappearance seems to coincide with the moment that Flashlight was activated. He notes on his tape recorder:
"Zac Hobson, July 5th. One: there has been a malfunction in Project Flashlight with devastating results. Two: it seems I am the only person left on Earth."
After several days without finding anyone, his mental state begins to deteriorate. He puts on a woman's slip and alternates between exhilaration and despair. Eventually he breaks down altogether. He places cardboard cutouts of famous people (such as Adolf Hitler, Richard Nixon, and Pope John Paul II) and addresses them from a balcony. He declares himself "President of this Quiet Earth", then goes on a destructive rampage. His insanity peaks when he bursts into a church wielding a shotgun and wearing his woman's attire, shoots the crucifix and announces that he is now God. Finally, totally despondent, he puts the barrel of a shotgun in his mouth, but then backs away from the brink of madness.
He establishes a more normal routine. Then one morning, he comes across a young woman named Joanne (Alison Routledge). They eventually become lovers. Later, they find a third survivor, a large Maori man named Api (Pete Smith). The three determine why they survived the Effect: they were all on the verge of death when it happened. Api was being drowned in a fight with another man, Joanne was electrocuted by a faulty appliance, and Zac took an overdose of pills. He had figured out that there were serious dangers with the experiment and was guilt-ridden for not speaking out.
A love triangle develops, but Zac is more concerned about some very disturbing observations: several fundamental constants of the universe are changing, causing the Sun's output to fluctuate. Zac fears that the Effect will occur again and decides to destroy the still-running Delenco facility in an attempt to stop it.
The three put aside their mounting personal conflicts and drive a truckload of explosives to the installation, only to be stopped at the perimeter when Zac detects dangerously high levels of ionising radiation that could prematurely set off the explosives. He tells the two that he must return to town to retrieve a remote control for the truck. Once he is gone, Joanne and Api make love. Afterwards, Api tells Joanna that he is going to sacrifice himself by driving the truck; he doubts that Zac's device will be capable of controlling a big semi. Then they see that Zac has reached the same conclusion. He drives the truck onto the weakened roof of the underground laboratory, which collapses under the weight. Just as the Effect reaches a maximum, he sets off the explosives.
Once again, a red light is seen surrounded by the dark tunnel. Zac finds himself lying face down alone on a beach. There are strange cloud formations, resembling waterspouts. As he walks to the water's edge, an enormous ringed planet slowly rises over the horizon. The film closes on Zac's bewildered face. He holds up his personal tape recorder as if to speak, then lowers it. He has nothing left to say.
