NASA Chief Astronaut To Lead Final Shuttle Flight
BLOGGER NOTE: NASA moved up the STS-134 mission to haul up the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer -- previously scheduled to be the final shuttle flight -- to a target launch date on July 29, 2010. The STS-133 mission now is scheduled to launch Sept. 16, 2010.

NASA ASSIGNS CREW FOR FINAL SCHEDULED SPACE SHUTTLE MISSION
WASHINGTON -- NASA has assigned the crew for the last scheduled space shuttle mission, targeted to launch in September 2010. The flight to the International Space Station will carry a pressurized logistics module to the station.
Veteran shuttle commander and retired Air Force Col. Steven W. Lindsey will command the eight-day mission, designated STS-133. Air Force Col. Eric A. Boe will serve as the pilot; it will be his second flight as a shuttle pilot.

Meet Todd Halvorson
Todd Halvorson is the Kennedy Space Center Bureau Chief.
Todd has been covering NASA's space shuttle, International Space Station and planetary exploration missions as well as military and commercial space programs for more than two decades.
Now in his second stint at FLORIDA TODAY, he also worked as Cape Canaveral Bureau Chief for SPACE.com and as a freelance reporter for The New York Times.
Todd also serves as Facility Manager for the newspaper's "blockhouse" bureau at Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39 Press Site.

The Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV), also known as the hovercraft or Ground Effect Machine (GEM), came of age in the late 1950s. Although much of the innovation took place in Great Britain under the direction of Sir Christopher Cockerell with the full backing of the British government, considerable experimentation also occurred in the United States. However, these efforts were smaller in funding, size and end results. Princeton University became a center of early American ACV development. The first successful craft to emerge out of this program was the X-2, which incorporated some innovative features, including the first use of a flexible skirt. Charles R. Rhoades participated in the Princeton program and produced an improved version of the X-2 for sport purposes that became the first ACV offered for commercial sale.
The X-2 was notable at the time for being the smallest peripheral jet ACV in existence. Shortly after it began testing, the Princeton team began work on the much larger X-3 flying saucer model, which first flew on October 18, 1959 and was capable of 80 kph (50 mph).
