I think about this scene and Tea' Leoni acting in terms of how I felt in 1975 because I was failing the simulations for navigating into the comet that I would have to accomplish the next year.

The possibility of MSNBC, and Microsoft, a pack of rabid jackals and hyenas, doing anything remotely brave and unselfish and honorable, is the height of science fiction. They do nothing but cause problems for other people just because they are full of hate and envy of people that try to make the world a better place.

The Microsoft-Corbis-Al Qaeda zombies continue to plot to disrupt my life and my freedom to pursue just activities, so they can pirate my true identity, which has tremendous commercial value.

Gabriel Edward Martin: I've come to call on Anne.

[Anne's father puts an ear piece in his ear to hear. Gabriel leans in and tries again louder]

Mr. Howard: Well of course you call yourself a man!

Miss Anne Howard/ Mrs. Anne Martin: Father stop it! You heard him!

Bundling bags are a wonderful
tradition. I don't mind in the least.

http://www.patriotresource.com/factfiction/events/page6.html

Courting couples used bundling bags to spend the night together:

When the militia comes to Pembroke to rest and resupply, Gabriel calls on Anne. That night, he is in Anne's bed being sewn into a bundling bag by Mrs. Howard as Peter Howard looks on nervously.

FACTS:
Though it was a practice rarely spoken of and usually denied, bundling was used by courting couples. Since most arose before dawn and went to bed not long after dusk and worked in between, something had to be done to give a caller an opportunity to call on his beloved. They could not stay up all night, since the fires would be put out as the rest of the family went to bed to preserve fuel and out of safety, so bundling allowed the courting couple to continue to talk without catching cold or worse.

Bags, boards, bolsters and even pillows were used to separate the couple. Each was more of a mental barrier rather than an absolute physical barrier, although such extreme measures as sewing the bag closed were probably taken by some families.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_%28physics%29

In physics, motion means a continuous change in the position of a body relative to a reference point, as measured by a particular observer in a particular frame of reference. Until the end of the 19th century, Isaac Newton's laws of motion, which he posited as axioms or postulates in his famous Principia were the basis of what has since become known as classical physics. Calculations of trajectories and forces of bodies in motion based on Newtonian or classical physics were very successful until physicists began to be able to measure and observe very fast physical phenomena.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_laws_of_motion

Newton's laws of motion are three physical laws which provide relationships between the forces acting on a body and the motion of the body, first compiled by Sir Isaac Newton.

Newton's laws of motion describe the acceleration of massive particles. In modern language, the laws may be stated as:

First Law

If no net force acts on a particle, then it is possible to select a set of reference frames, called inertial reference frames, observed from which the particle moves without any change in velocity. This law is often simplified into the sentence "An object will stay at rest or continue at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepler%27s_laws_of_planetary_motion

In astronomy, Kepler's laws of planetary motion are three mathematical laws that describe the motion of planets in the Solar System. German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571–1630) discovered them.

This did not happen in 1976 because I refused to return to Earth for repairs to my ship and replenishment of my oxygen supply. It was not demolishing the comet that completed my mission; rather it was because the force of the detonation shifted the trajectory of the comet just enough that it, or its radioactive fragments, would not impact with the Earth. That was all because I hit it so far away from Earth that it just needed a slight nudge to change the trajectory of the comet.

Love and Rocket (2002)

Dr. Zoidberg: [voiceover] As the candy hearts poured into the fiery quasar, a wondrous thing happened, why not. They vaporized into a mystical love radiation that spread across the universe, destroying many, many planets, including two gangster planets and a cowboy world. But one planet was exactly the right distance to see the romantic rays but not be destroyed by them: Earth. So all over the world couples stood together in joy. And me, Zoidberg. And no one could have been happier unless it would have also been Valentine's Day. What? It was? Hooray.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_and_Rocket

"Love and Rocket" is the third episode of Futurama's fourth season. It first aired on February 10, 2002.

The Planet Express crew heads off to the most romantic city on Earth, Milwaukee, to land a delivery contract from Romanticorp, makers of all things romantic. After a tour of the facilities, Fry becomes obsessed with finding the perfect candy heart to express his feelings for Leela. Planet Express gets the contract to deliver the hearts and with the additional funding from the new contract, the Professor makes some upgrades to the ship. The upgrades include a new personality, complete with a female voice module (character voiced by actress Sigourney Weaver). Bender and the ship's new personality fall for each other and start dating. Bender quickly grows tired of the ship, and begins cheating on her. The ship, suspicious of Bender, begins acting in a possessive and erratic manner.

The crew is assigned the task of delivering several tons of conversation hearts to Lrrr of the planet Omicron Persei 8. The Omicronians are highly offended by the chalky candies and their poorly spelled messages. While escaping from the Omicronian death fleet, Bender decides to break up with the Planet Express ship. This cracks the ship's fragile mind, and it comes to a stop, allowing the Omicronian missiles to impact.

The ship is sent tumbling through space, dented and scorched, but otherwise physically intact. Leela attempts to console the ship, but she fails. The ship, acting irrationally, decides to fly into a quasar. With the power of ten billion black holes in it, the ship and Bender would be merged into a perfect quantum singularity. She offers to stop if Bender would merge his programming with hers. To make sure there wasn't any interference from Fry or Leela, the ship turns off the atmosphere and shuts off the artificial gravity. Leela has Bender distract the ship by agreeing to merge their programming while she and Fry try to shut down the ship's brain. While the two machines play a cat-and-mouse game, Leela continues to attempt to shut down the brain (also winning a free trip to Six Flags), which makes the ship even less rational. Fry notices that Leela's oxygen is running out, and with Leela busy and not listening to his warnings, he decides to give her his supply. With this sacrifice, Leela is able to successfully shut down the ship's artificial intelligence, returning every system to normal. Unfortunately, Fry is rendered unconscious due to the lack of oxygen. Realizing that Fry risked his life to save hers, Leela gives him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Fry awakens, and coughs up a candy heart saying, ironically enough, "U leave me breathless". The two find Bender, unaware that a little of the ship's program had slipped into his. Leela decides to dump the undelivered hearts into the quasar. The hearts vaporize, producing a romantic glow whose rays reach Earth on Valentine's Day, yet destroying many planets en route, including two gangster planets and a cowboy world.

"Booby Trap"

TNG, Episode 3x06

First aired: 30 October 1989

While investigating a 1,000-year-old derelict ship, the Enterprise gets caught in the same booby trap that doomed the vessel a millennium ago.

While the Enterprise is investigating the remains at Orelious IX, they discover a Promellian battle cruiser. When the away team returns, a Menthar booby-trap begins to drain the power reserves of the Enterprise, which is unable to move, to create deadly radiation. Lt. Cmdr. La Forge tries to come up with a solution using the help of a holodeck recreation of Leah Brahms, the engineer who built the warp engines of the Enterprise. La Forge has the computer recreate the personality of Dr. Brahms (whom he falls in love with) to facilitate the interaction. The key to get moving lies in the time-differential between action and reaction, but to be quick enough, total control over the ship has to be turned over to the computer which, according to simulations, is unable to successfully escape the field.

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Leah_Brahms

Doctor Leah Brahms was a member of the Theoretical Propulsion Group and a graduate of the Daystrom Institute of Technology. She made major contributions to the development of the Galaxy class's warp drive system, far beyond her official role as a junior team member.

In 2366, the USS Enterprise-D was caught in an ancient trap which drained the energy from its engines and bombarded the crew with radiation. To learn more about the engine design and help him find a solution to the problem, Geordi La Forge created a holographic version of Dr. Brahms. The holographic character was very friendly and La Forge developed an attraction to her image. Together they were able to save the Enterprise. (TNG: "Booby Trap")

A year later, in 2367, the real Dr. Brahms, by that time married and promoted to Senior Design Engineer of the Theoretical Propulsion Group, visited the Enterprise for an inspection of the field modifications made to the ship's engines by Commander La Forge. Dr. Brahms was far different from her hologram; she was cold, all business and without humor. Much to his dismay, she was highly critical of his work, especially his enhancements of the warp engines. La Forge and Brahms tried to work out their differences and were getting along until Brahms informed him that she was married, much to Geordi's shock and dismay. She later discovered the records of her hologram's somewhat romantic interactions with Geordi during the Booby Trap crisis and strongly objected to his having programmed a holographic replica of herself. She told him that she felt violated, to which Geordi expressed his indignation of her judgmental attitude. The two engineers then pulled together in a crisis and became good friends (TNG: "Galaxy's Child").

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_Hyakutake

Comet Hyakutake formally designated C/1996 B2) is a comet that was discovered in January 1996, which passed very close to Earth in March of that year. It was dubbed The Great Comet of 1996; its passage near the Earth was one of the closest cometary approaches of the previous 200 years. Hyakutake appeared very bright in the night sky and was widely seen around the world. The comet temporarily upstaged the much anticipated Comet Hale-Bopp, which was approaching the inner solar system at the time.

X-ray emission

One of the great surprises of Hyakutake's passage through the inner solar system was the discovery that it was emitting X-rays, with observations made using the ROSAT satellite revealing very strong X-ray emission.[17] This was the first time a comet had been seen to do so, but astronomers soon found that almost every comet they looked at was emitting X-rays. The emission from Hyakutake was brightest in a crescent shape surrounding the nucleus with the ends of the crescent pointing away from the Sun.

The cause of the X-ray emission is thought to be a combination of two mechanisms. Interactions between energetic solar wind particles and cometary material evaporating from the nucleus is likely to contribute significantly to this effect.[18] Reflection of solar X-rays is seen in other solar system objects such as the Moon, but a simple calculation assuming even the highest x-ray reflectivity possible per molecule or dust grain is not able to explain the majority of the observed flux from Hyakutake, as the comet's atmosphere is very tenuous and diffuse. Observations of Comet LINEAR with the Chandra satellite in 2000 determined that X-rays observed from that comet were produced predominantly by charge exchange collisions between highly charged carbon oxygen and nitrogen minor ions in the solar wind, and neutral water, oxygen and hydrogen in the comet's coma.

Radar results from the Arecibo Observatory indicated that the nucleus of the comet was about 2 km across, and surrounded by a flurry of pebble-sized particles ejected from the comet at a few metres per second. This measurement of the nucleus size corresponded well with indirect estimates using infrared emission and radio observations.[7][8]

The small size of the nucleus (Halley's Comet is about 15 km across, while Comet Hale-Bopp was about 40 km across) implies that Hyakutake must have been very active to become as bright as it did. Most comets undergo outgassing from a small proportion of their surface, but most or all of Hyakutake's surface seemed to have been active.

X-rays (or Röntgen rays) are a form of electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength in the range of 10 to 0.01 nanometers, corresponding to frequencies in the range 30 PHz to 30 EHz. X-rays are primarily used for diagnostic radiography and crystallography. X-rays are a form of ionizing radiation and as such can be dangerous.

X-rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths of around 10-10 metres.

When medical X-rays are being produced, a thin metallic sheet is placed between the emitter and the target, effectively filtering out the lower energy (soft) X-rays. This is often placed close to the window of the X-ray tube. The resultant X-ray is said to be hard. Soft X-rays overlap the range of extreme ultraviolet. The frequency of hard X-rays is higher than that of soft X-rays, and the wavelength is shorter. Hard X-rays overlap the range of "long"-wavelength (lower energy) gamma rays, however the distinction between the two terms depends on the source of the radiation, not its wavelength; X-ray photons are generated by energetic electron processes, gamma rays by transitions within atomic nuclei.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermonuclear_explosion

Effects of nuclear explosions

Energy from a nuclear explosive is initially released in several forms of penetrating radiation. When there is a surrounding material such as air, rock, or water, this radiation interacts with and rapidly heats it to an equilibrium temperature. Causing vaporization of surrounding material resulting in its rapid expansion. Kinetic energy created by this expansion contributes to the formation of a shockwave. When a nuclear detonation occurs in air near sea level, much of the released energy interacts with the atmosphere and creates a shockwave which expands spherically from the hypocenter. Intense thermal radiation at the hypocenter forms a fireball and if the burst is low enough, its often associated mushroom cloud. In a burst at high altitudes, where the air density is low, more energy is released as ionizing gamma radiation and x-rays than an atmosphere displacing shockwave.

The Parent Rap

Original Airdate on FOX: 11-Nov-01

It begins with Bart and Milhouse accidentally stealing a police car. Expecting an easy judge, Bart is instead faced with Judge Constance Harm (Kaczmarek), a stern, no-nonsense arbiter. Noting Homer's contribution to the incident and sensing that Bart is "crying out for adult supervision." Her Honor orders the young troublemaker to be tethered to his father. The plan can't help but bring the pair closer to each other, but their new ling interferes with the relationship between Homer and Marge, who literally cuts the cord, landing her in Harm's way as well.

Did You Notice...

Lisa knows the court officer on a first name basis?

Homer does still have a job?

there doesn't appear to be any easy access to Judge Harm's houseboat by land?

Clinton was never actually convicted of any crimes, so he wouldn't have been sentenced to community service... and what sort of crime matches the penalty of having to deliver mail?

The Parent Rap

Original Airdate on FOX: 11-Nov-01

% Homer and Marge try to retreat from the houseboat, but a seal blocks
% their path. It barks, alerting judge Harm to the Simpsons'
% presence. She steps onto the dock and starts to look for the
% intruders. As she closes in on Homer and Marge, Homer tries to
% throw a cinderblock at her. Fortunately for Judge Harm, he misses
% her. Unfortunately, the block hits her boat instead, quickly
% sinking it.
%
% The next morning, Judge Harm studies the newspaper coverage of the
% sinking, which mentions that one of Harm's quilts was ruined.

Harm: Agh! That quilt was made by my grandmother.

Homer: So ... it cost you nothing.

Harm: Shut up. You two are not only horrible parents, you're violent criminals, and I'm going to lock you up 'till frogs do fractions.

[Marge and Homer look apprehensive]

Bart: [approaches the bench] Your Honor, may I say something?

Harm: Well, it is highly unorthodox, so no.

Bart: Please, your Honor? [puppy-dog look]

Harm: Oh, I can't resist that look. You remind me of me, when I was a little boy.

Bart: Your Honor, it's not easy being my parents. I'm always screwing up in school, and getting in trouble with the law. But if I grow up to be a halfway decent person, I know it will be because of my Mom and Dad. Everyone else might give up on me, but my parents never will.

Lisa: [sniffles] That's my brother.

Snake: Um, did she say she used to be a dude?

Memorable quotes for
Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)

Trautman: What are you doing? Do you know what the hell you've done?

Murdock: Don't act so innocent, Colonel. You had your suspicions, and if you suspected then you're sort of an accessory aren't ya?

Trautman: Don't ever count me with you and your scum! It was a lie wasn't it? Just like the whole damn war, it was a lie!

Murdock: What are you talking about?

Trautman: That camp... was supposed to be empty. Rambo goes in, a decorated vet, he finds no POWs, the Congress buys it - case closed! And if he happens to get caught, nobody knows he's alive except you and your computers... and you can reprogram that can't you?

Murdock: Who the hell do you think you're talking to, Trautman?

Trautman: A stinkin' bureaucrat who's tryin to cover his ass!

Murdock: No, not just mine Trautman. We're talkin' about a nation here! Besides, it was your hero's fault. Now if your warrior had gone in and done what the hell he was supposed to do, we'd be out of this clean and simple. He was just supposed to take pictures!

Trautman: And if those pictures showed something they would have been... lost... wouldn't they?

Murdock: Oh Trautman, I still don't think you understand what this is all about.

Trautman: The same as it always is! Money! In '72 we were supposed to pay the Cong four-and-a-half billion in war reparations. We reneged, they kept the POWs... and you're doing the same thing all over again.

Murdock: And what the hell would you do, Trautman? Pay blackmail money to ransom our own men and finance the war effort against our allies? What if some burn-out POW shows up on the six o-clock news? What do you want to do... start the war all over again? You wanna bomb Hanoi? You want everybody screaming for armed invasion? Do you honestly think somebody's gonna get up on the floor of the United States Senate, and ask for billions of dollars for a couple of forgotten ghosts?

Trautman: Men, Goddamn it! Men... who fought for their country!

Murdock: That's enough! Trautman, I'm gonna forget this conversation ever took place.

Trautman: You bastard!

Murdock: And if I were you... I'd never make the mistake of bringing this subject up again.

Trautman: Oh you're the one who's making the mistake.

Murdock: Yeah? What mistake?

Trautman: Rambo.
