It was only three months ago that the lethal little men in black pajamas roamed the length and breadth of South Viet Nam marauding, maiming and killing with impunity. No highway was safe by night, and few by day; the trains had long since stopped running. From their tunneled redoubts, the Communist Viet Cong held 65% of South Viet Nam's land and 55% of its people in thrall. Saigon's armies were bone weary and bleeding from defections. As the momentum of their monsoon offensive gathered, the Communists seemed about to cut the nation in half with a vicious chop across the Central Highlands. The enemy was ready to move in for the kill, and South Viet Nam was near collapse.
Today South Viet Nam throbs with a pride and power, above all an esprit, scarcely credible against the summer's somber vista. Government desertion rates have plummeted and recruitment is up, and it is now the Communists who are troubled with rising defections. Some roads are being reopened for the first time in years, and the much-vaunted Viet Cong plan to move into their mass-attack "third phase" is now no more than a bedraggled dream.
The remarkable turnabout in the war is the result of one of the swiftest, biggest military buildups in the history of warfare. Everywhere today South Viet Nam bustles with the U.S. presence. Bulldozers by the hundreds carve sandy shore into vast plateaus for tent cities and airstrips. Howitzers and trucks grind through the once-empty green highlands. Wave upon wave of combat-booted Americans—lean, laconic and looking for a fight—pour ashore from armadas of troopships. Day and night, screaming jets and prowling helicopters seek out the enemy from their swampy strongholds in southernmost Camau all the way north to the mountain gates of China. The Viet Cong's once-cocky hunters have become the cowering hunted as the cutting edge of U.S. fire power slashes into the thickets of Communist strength. If the U.S. has not yet guaranteed certain victory in South Viet Nam, it has nonetheless undeniably averted certain defeat. As one top-ranking U.S. officer put

SEAL Missions
Special Operations is characterized by the use of small units with unique ability to conduct military actions that are beyond the capability of conventional military forces. SEALs are superbly trained in all environments, and are the master's of maritime Special Operations. SEALs are required to utilize a combination of specialized training, equipment, and tactics in completion of Special Operation missions worldwide.

Mark Samples earned the Navy’s highest peacetime award for helping save the crippled USS Stark. Now he’s in a Wisconsin prison.
First of five parts
CHAPTER 1: THE STRANGER
He was a hero once, plaque in hand, a bronze medal pinned to his chest for his part in saving the lives of 180 shipmates. But over the years, the wooden plaque dried and cracked until duct tape was all that held it together.
And now: He's just robbed a credit union in the town of Red Wing, Minn. He is fleeing. On a mountain bike.
He pedals furiously, steering with his right arm, cradling $70,000 in his left. The Colt .45 rests inside his jacket, a bullet waiting in the chamber. His hazel eyes stare intently from a black-knit hunting mask.
All he feels is numb.
Around him, things move in slow motion. Bundles of currency slip from his arm; a trail forms.
The bike plunges down a steep culvert, crashing onto a service road. He flies over the handlebars. The .45 clatters onto the blacktop in front of the Red Wing Mall, unnoticed. Money spills everywhere, bundles of hundreds, fifties and twenties.
He grabs what he can, abandons almost $60,000 and gets back on the bicycle.
Fifty yards more, then he drops the damaged bike. He runs past a small apartment complex through grass and weeds, right to the edge of the Mississippi River - and jumps in.
He scoops mud and weeds on top of his head - the old instinct for camouflage - then crouches in the river as a police cruiser screeches to a stop 40 feet away. The officer steps outside, glances around, drives off quickly.
The robber swims a few hundred yards to a place on the riverbank where he has left an air tank. He strips off his clothes, revealing an unusual outfit: scuba gear.
He is 37 years old, from Hager City, Wis., five miles to the north. Vast bodies of water have always stirred his imagination, from the moment he picked up Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" as a boy to the moment he entered Navy SEAL training as a young man.
Now, on the morning of May 3, 2001, he slips back into the dark, flooded Mississippi with the remains of the credit union money - $10,550 - stuffed inside his wet suit. Through floating soda bottles and scavenging birds, he glides toward the second leg of his mission.
Water seeps into the wet suit. A chill runs through him.
He's been trained to endure physical discomfort. It's the mental pain he cannot handle.
As he swims, he pulls the hunter's mask from his head, and it floats away and vanishes.
More than five years later, the robber's name, Mark William Samples, is a matter of court record. But the man inside the wet suit that day remains a stupefying mystery to his shipmates, friends and family.
"He was a stranger to himself," his mother says.
Ruth Samples has trouble picturing her oldest son in the weeks before the robbery, when the nightmares and paranoia kept driving him into the basement to sleep apart from the wife he loved. He would lock the door and lie down with a gun under his pillow. All this, she learned after the robbery.
She remembers a different Mark.
The happy, gentle boy who raced horses.
The sailor who saved his ship but never seemed comfortable with the awards given him.
The man whose military toughness melted in the presence of his 2-year-old son.
"That wasn't Mark that robbed that bank," Ruth Samples insists. "He wasn't there inside that brain."
How did the hero of May 1987 become the robber of May 2001?
And does his story carry a cautionary lesson as thousands of Americans return from combat, some of them heroes, too?

Months of stalking end with 2 dead at UW
Rebecca Griego called her ex-boyfriend Jonathan Rowan "a psycho from the past." He wouldn't stop calling her office at the University of Washington. When she no longer would answer the phone, he harassed her sister and threatened to kidnap her dogs.
On Monday morning, Rowan found Griego alone in her fourth-floor office in Gould Hall and fatally shot her before killing himself.

The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States that was triggered by a group of militant university students who took over the U.S. diplomatic mission in Tehran on November 4, 1979. Idaho Gov. Kempthorne named Interior secretary

WASHINGTON — President Bush selected Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne as Interior secretary Thursday, choosing a Westerner whose state is home to rich natural beauty as well as great mineral wealth to become the next steward of millions of acres of public lands.
Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho confirmed the selection, which Bush was to unveil at the White House in a late-afternoon announcement.

Kempthorne clears Senate panel
A Senate committee Wednesday sent Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne's nomination as Interior secretary to the full Senate, although procedural delays by lawmakers may stall his final confirmation to the Cabinet.
The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved Kempthorne's nomination on a voice vote. No senator opposed Kempthorne, although Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., voted "present" to protest the Bush administration's refusal to share a portion of offshore oil and gas royalties with Gulf Coast states.
Landrieu and Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., have said they intend to place a hold on Kempthorne's nomination once it leaves committee. Holds are a privilege a senator can invoke to block a measure from coming to a floor vote.

Prior to the 2006 midterm election Domenici called and pressured then-United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico David Iglesias to speed up indictments in a federal corruption investigation that involved at least one former Democratic state senator. When Iglesias said an indictment would not be handed down until at least December, Domenici said "I'm very sorry to hear that" — and the line went dead. Iglesias was fired a little over one month later by the Bush Administration. A communication by a senator or House member with a federal prosecutor regarding an ongoing criminal investigation is a violation of ethics rules. In a March 2007 statement, Domenici admitted making such a call.[9] House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., issued subpoenas to require Iglesias and three other ousted U.S. attorneys to testify before Congress.[10]
Domenici later admitted calling Iglesias, though Domenici claimed he never used the word "November" when he called Iglesias about an ongoing Albuquerque courthouse corruption case.[11] Domenici has denied trying to influence Iglesias, and has hired lawyer K. Lee Blalack II to represent him.[12]
According to the Justice Department, Domenici called the Department and demanded Iglesias be replaced on four occasions.[13]
According to the Washington Post, on the day of the firing (Dec 7, 2006) William Kelley, a deputy to then White House Counsel Harriet Miers, said in an email that Domenici's chief of staff was "happy as a clam" about the Iglesias firing. A week later, a Justice Department email to the White House counsel stated: "Domenici is going to send over names tomorrow (not even waiting for Iglesias's body to cool)."[14]

McKay got good review 7 months before ouster

Seven months before he was forced to resign as U.S. attorney for the western district of Washington, John McKay received a glowing performance review from Justice Department evaluators.
"McKay is an effective, well-regarded and capable leader of the [U.S. attorney's office] and the District's law enforcement community," the team of 27 Justice Department officials concluded, according to a copy of their final report obtained by The Seattle Times.
Yet on Dec. 7, Michael Battle, director of the Justice Department's executive office for U.S. attorneys, called McKay and asked him to step down.
"I was told to resign by the end of January," McKay confirmed Wednesday. "I asked what the reason was, and they told me there was none.

White's license was suspended by the state Supreme Court in August 2003 for failure to pay his bar dues. He was reinstated to the bar in 2005 after paying a small fee, but currently holds an "inactive" status.

A Proclamation
Since our days as a young nation, the American people have always banded together to meet the needs of our citizens and our communities. Awareness, generosity, and the determination to find solutions to community problems are traits that have long kept our country strong. We have always been a people who give of ourselves to help those less fortunate in a way that no government or institution by itself can.
Prevention of homelessness is a complex challenge that faces us today. Although estimates of the exact number of homeless vary widely, innovative approaches to this problem by all elements of our society are needed. And in few other areas has each segment of our society been so involved, with so much dedication and sacrifice. Federal, State, and local governments, national service organizations, corporations, churches, synagogues, and voluntary groups, over the years, have worked together to provide food, shelter, and comfort for the needy.
Now, I call upon all Americans to come together in partnership and resolve to invigorate their commitment to reach out to their fellow Americans in need. Let us all experience the blessings of compassion and goodwill that come from the joy of helping others.
To increase public awareness of the problem of homelessness, the Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 347, has designated the week beginning June 22, 1986, as "National Homelessness Awareness Week" and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this event.
Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the week beginning June 22, 1986, as National Homelessness Awareness Week.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fifth day of June, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and tenth.

(May 17, 2007) - Former USS Stark (FFG 31) crewmember Tim Martineau reads the names of the fallen Sailors during the tolling of the bell at the USS Stark 20-year anniversary memorial ceremony. May 17, 1987, Stark was on routine patrol in the Persian Gulf when two Iraqi missiles struck the ship killing 37 Sailors. Despite the severe damage inflicted, the heroic efforts of the Stark's crew saved the ship. Stark was later decommissioned in 1999.
