Aegis Combat System
The Aegis weapons system is a surface-to-air integrated weapons system. It is designed to defend the fleet against any airborne threat. The heart of the Aegis system is the AN/SPY-1 Phased-array radar system coupled with the AN/UYK-1 high-speed computer system. This combination is able to detect incoming missiles or aircraft, sort them by assigning a threat value, assign on-board Standard surface-to-air missiles, and guide the missiles to their targets. Aegis can track up to 100 targets at any given time.
AEGIS is currently carried aboard 2 types of ships. The TICONDEROGA-class cruisers were the first. These ships are often fitted with 2 MK 41 VLS. They can carry up to 122 missiles of all types, including Tomahawk, Standard and SLAM. These ships carry a "full" AEGIS System. The second type of ship is the ARLEIGH BURKE-class destroyer.

It also refers to Admiral Marc Mitscher, an influential figure and mentor for whom Admiral Burke served as Chief of Staff. Admiral Burke's Destroyer Squadron 23, represented by the border of 23 ovals, was the only United States Destroyer Squadron awarded a Presidential Unit Citation, signified by the canton of blue, yellow, and red. The ovals also refer to the year 1923 in which Midshipman Burke was graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Twenty-three also reflects Admiral Burke's distinguished service on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations as(OP-23).
The Crest:
The mounted figure of St. George recalls Admiral Burke's celebrated victory in the Battle of Cape St. George over Japanese naval forces. His mantle bears a gold cross for the Navy Cross awarded to the Admiral. The birch branch on the helmet represents Admiral Burke himself, a reference to his name derived from his Scandinavian heritage.
The red sea dragon symbolizes Japanese naval power assaulted by forces under Captain Burke's command. It is gorged with the two gold stars he was awarded for outstanding service. The lance impaling the dragon signifies ordnance on target. The capabilities of the new destroyer, the most powerful and survivable ever built, are signified by the full armor and equipment of the warrior St. George. The Admiral's nickname "31-Knot Burke" is recalled by the number 31 on the horses'.

About the Ship’s Name, about Sergeant Darrell Samuel Cole:
On August 25 ,1941, Cole enlisted in the Marine Corps for the duration of the National Emergency, and following a boot training at Parris Island, South Carolina, he was appointed to the Field Music School for training as a Marine Corps Field Music, the equivalent of a bugler. Completing instruction, he was transferred to the First Marine Regiment, First Marine Division, and on August 7, 1942, reached the shores of Guadalcanal for the first American offensive of World War II.
Not too happy in his role of field music when he had joined a fighting outfit to fight and after acquitting himself meritoriously as a machine gunner in the absence of the regular gunner, he applied for a change in rating, but was refused due to the shortage of buglers. Cole completed his first overseas tour of duty and returned to the United States in February 1943, where he joined First Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, then forming as a part of the Fourth Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. When the unit moved to California he again asked for relief as a Field Music and for permission to perform line duties, but was again refused due to the shortage of buglers in the Marine Corps.
During the first engagement of the Fourth Division at Roi-Namur in the Kwajalein Atoll, Cole, again forsaking his bugle, went into action as a machine-gunner. Four months later, when the Division stormed ashore at Saipan, he had been assigned to a machine-gun unit. Because of his proven ability in combat, he was designated a machine gun section leader. During the battle when his squad leader was killed, Cole, although wounded, assumed command of the entire squad and acquitted himself in such a manner to be awarded the Bronze Star Medal for "...his resolute leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and tenacious determination in the face of terrific opposition..." , He was also awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in action.
A few days after the battle of Saipan, Cole, again led his squad ashore in the invasion of the neighboring islands of Tinian, where he continued to live up to his growing reputation as "The Fighting Field Music."

The President today announced the appointment of Philip A. Lacovara as the Presidential appointee to the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission. Mr. Lacovara will fill the unexpired 5-year term of William A. Borders, Jr., who was appointed by President Carter on July 2, 1980.
Mr. Lacovara is currently resident partner of the Washington, D.C., office of the law firm Hughes, Hubbard & Reed, where he is engaged in the general practice of law. In 1976 and 1977 he served as special counsel, House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, for the Korean influence investigation. In 1973 and 1974 he served as Counsel to the Special Prosecutor, Watergate Special Prosecution Force. Prior to that, in 1972-73 and 1967-69, he served in the capacities of Deputy Solicitor General of the United States and Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States, respectively. In 1971-72 he served as special counsel to the police commissioner of New York. Mr. Lacovara served as Special Assistant to the Attorney General in 1970. From 1969 to 1971, he was associated with Hughes, Hubbard & Reed. Prior to that, in 1968 and 1969 he served as consultant to the U.S. Representative to the Organization of American States.
Immediately following his graduation from law school in 1966, Mr. Lacovara served a judicial clerkship with Judge Harold Leventhal of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Mr. Lacovara graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University School of Law, where he was first in his class for each of 3 years. He received his bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Georgetown University in 1963, where he graduated in 3 years.
Mr. Lacovara has been actively involved in District of Columbia legal affairs throughout his distinguished career, which has included service since 1976 on the board of trustees of the Public Defender Service of the District of Columbia, and since 1979 on the committee on admissions and grievances, United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Additionally, he has served since 1973 on the Judicial Conference of the District of Columbia Circuit, and since 1976 on the Advisory Committee on Procedure, Judicial Council of the District of Columbia Circuit, and the Legal Ethics Committee, District of Columbia Bar. From 1978 through 1980, he was delegate from the District of Columbia to the American Bar Association House of Delegates. He is a member of the American Law Institute.
Mr. Lacovara has served as an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center and lecturer in law at Columbia University School of Law. He has been a frequent author and lecturer in many areas of the law, including the criminal justice system, constitutional law, antitrust law, and professional responsibility.
Mr. Lacovara is married, has seven children, and resides in Washington, D.C. He was born on July 11, 1943.

Today their job is vitally important—their sacrifice and patriotism makes it possible for those of us who are civilians to go about our everyday lives. Their commitment keeps our nation strong and our future free.
You know, James Michener writes in one of his novels about a commanding officer who thinks about the self-sacrifice of those who served under him and wonders, "Where do we get such men?"
Today millions of Americans are asking themselves that same question about the dedicated men and women who serve in our Armed Forces. Like me, they're asking that question with gratitude, with respect and affection in their hearts. A review of George W. Bush’s 1998 tax return reveals that he reported the sale of his share of the Texas Rangers baseball team as a long term capital gain. As a result, he paid a tax on the more than $15 million proceeds at a tax rate of 20%, as opposed to the 39.6% rate on ordinary income. According to a press release dated June 18, 1998 from the Dallas Morning News, Bush paid $606,000 for about 1.8% of the team and became the managing general partner of B/R Rangers Associates, Ltd., a limited partnership that owned the team. Under the terms of the agreement, Mr. Bush was given an additional 10.2% of the proceeds as additional compensation if the team was sold. The incentive compensation became effective if the other partners received their entire investment back plus a 2% return per year.

The Stolen Valor Act of 2005 (the Act), signed into law by [ U.S. national traitor George W. Bush ] on December 20, 2006,[1] is a U.S. law that broadens the provisions of previous U.S. law addressing the unauthorized wearing, manufacture or selling of military decorations and medals. It is a federal offense which carries a punishment of prison time and/or a fine; the scope previously covered only the Medal of Honor.
The Act was first introduced into the United States Congress's House of Representatives on July 19, 2005 by Representative John Salazar, a Democrat from Colorado, as H.R. 3352.[2][3] It was introduced into the Senate by Senator Kent Conrad, a Democrat from North Dakota, on November 10, 2005 as S. 1998.[4][5] The Senate version was passed unanimously on September 7, 2006.[5][6] The Senate version then went to the same House Judiciary Committee that held the House version. The Act briefly stalled, but the House subsequently passed the Senate version, S. 1998, on December 6, 2006.[7]
The purpose of the Act is to strengthen the provisions of 18 U.S.C. § 704 by broadening its scope and strengthening penalties. Specific new provisions in the Act include: granting more authority to Federal law enforcement officers, extending scope beyond the Medal of Honor, broadening the law to cover false claims whereas previously an overt act had to be committed, covering mailing and shipping of medals, and protecting the reputation and meaning of military heroism medals.[3][5]
The need for the Act came about because of large numbers of fake military heroes in the United States. For example, as of June 2, 2006 there were only 120 living Medal of Honor recipients, but there were far more known imposters.[8][9][10] There are also large numbers of fake Navy SEALS[11][12] and Army Special Forces,[13] among others.
