The word "colitas" means literally, "Little Tails", thus use of the slang, "colitas", (as referenced in the song) meaning the burning of little marijuana 'tails/buds'.

U.S. Navy Lieutenant Francis "Frank" Bartholomew Parker (Jonathan LaPaglia), a former military and ex-CIA operative who was brought out of a secret CIA mental institution - due to a mental breakdown he had suffered as a result of being tortured while being a prisoner in Somalia - to be the project's chrononaut. It is often said than Parker's mental problems is what allow him to be such a good chrononaut. Parker's youth was spent in a Philadelphia area orphanage. He is divorced and has a son he doesn't see often. He is continually chasing Olga, but she keeps refusing him. He also occasionally drinks to excess and has a gambling problem. Technically, he's an NSA agent but, outside of a mission, he can't leave the Project's headquarters, which chafes him. He always tries to get around the rules in an ongoing battle of wills with security chief Nathan Ramsey. His codename is "Conundrum".

Dr. Olga Vukavitch (Justina Vail), a Russian doctor who worked in the Russian version of the Backstep Project, which, without any technology from the Roswell crash, never reached operational level. She lost her husband in an accident. She grows to like Frank at times, but is almost invariably put off by some new crassness or arrogance of his.

U.S. Navy Captain Craig Donovan (Don Franklin), Backstep's military advisor/tactical coordinator and backup chrononaut. He's also an old friend of Frank's, who led the team which rescued him.

NSA Agent Dr. Bradley Talmadge (Alan Scarfe), chief of the Backstep Project and a long-time member of the NSA intelligence community. Although middle-aged, he is shown several times to still have excellent combat skills.

FBI Agent Nathan Ramsey (Nick Searcy), Backstep Project security chief. A short-tempered, highly opinionated man, he opposes Frank becoming chrononaut and is therefore made the prime target of Parker's practical jokes.

Dr. John Ballard (Sam Whipple) (seasons 1-2). The wheelchair-bound resident genius on the Backstep Project. In the first episode of season 3, he won a tropical island in a poker match in Las Vegas and got married but he's not sure with whom, since he was a little drunk at the time. So he took some time off to straighten things out

Dr. Isaac Mentnor (Norman Lloyd) (seasons 1-2, guest appearances in season 3), a scientist with a shadowy past that's tied into the Roswell cover-up, Dr. Mentnor was the man who initially conceived the Backstep project.

Andrew 'Hooter' Owsley (Kevin Christy) (season 3). A young physics prodigy whom Ballard suggested as his replacement.

Holmes Osborne (born 7 August 1952 in Los Angeles, California) is the actor who appeared as an Enolian official in the Star Trek: Enterprise episode "Canamar".

He had a recurring role as President Robert Maxwell on the science fiction series Seven Days and currently has a recurring role on the sci-fi series Invasion, playing Mayor Littles. He also played a mayor in an episode of Boston Legal, starring William Shatner, Rene Auberjonois, and Henry Gibson. He and his "Canamar" co-star Mark Rolston had roles in the acclaimed 1998 mini-series From the Earth to the Moon, as did fellow Star Trek alumnus David Clennon, Ronny Cox, Clint Howard, Daniel Hugh Kelly, Andy Milder, Ethan Phillips, Harve Presnell, Stephen Root, and Alan Ruck.

He and fellow Enterprise actress Dey Young (also from TNG and DS9) played a married couple in the 1999 film The Mod Squad, based on the TV series starring Clarence Williams III and Tige Andrews. Archer and Trip are mistakenly arrested and placed on a prison ship bound for the infamous penal colony of Canamar.


Shuttlepod 1 is found without anyone on board. After a forensic analysis, Phlox finds some blood traces and that leads Malcolm to conclude that the crew, Jonathan Archer and Trip Tucker, were abducted.

After contacting the Enolian officials, T'Pol learns that they were caught by the Enolian guards and charged with smuggling. They are now on a transport ship on its way to Canamar. As soon as the situation is explained, the Enolians agree to release Archer and Trip and they inform the transport crew.

Unfortunately for the two Enterprise crewmembers, two prisoners hijack the transport at the same moment they were to be set free. Archer decides then to go into his smuggler role and offers to pilot the transport. While taking the transport to a nearby binary system, he learns that Kuroda, one of the highjackers, served seven years on Canamar and he had subdermal implants installed to depolarize triburnium alloy (that was how he broke from his constraints) before he left.

Soon, two Enolian patrol ships come by and proceed to disable the transport. While refusing to step from "smuggler" to murderer, Archer is still able to get them away, disabling the two ships by igniting a plasma cloud released from the transport. Realizing Archer's resourcefulness, Koruda offers the captain to join him when they rendezvous with his friends. The former prisoner then tells a little more about himself. He was 14 when he first went to prison. The first time he was innocent but he explains that Duronom's guards taught him more than his father ever could. When he was released, 5 years later, he put his new skills to "good" use and had a pretty interesting life since then (and is grateful for it).

When they arrive at their rendezvous point, he tells Archer to put the ship in a decaying orbit around a planet, so the transport will look as if it has merely crashed with everyone aboard so nobody will come look for them. When he informs Archer that he has no intention of bringing the rest of the prisoners with him, Archer decides it is time to take back control of the transport.

He then gets Trip freed in order to repair the hatch (which had been damaged in the previous attack). There, he informs his engineer of his plan. Even if Trip is able to take out Kuroda's Nausicaan partner, he fails to disable the Enolian because the latter was warned by Zoumas, another prisoner.

However, when they finally dock with Kuroda's "friends", it is a team from the Enterprise which emerges from the hatch and stuns Kuroda and his partner. Still in a decaying orbit, they proceed to transfer the prisoners to the shuttle. Just as everyone is to be evacuated, Kuroda (who recovered pretty quickly from his stun) and Archer have a fight, ending in Kuroda's refusal to go with them to avoid being taken back to Canamar (and then preferring death).

Back on Enterprise, the Enolian officials apologize to Archer, but the captain is pretty acid in his remarks. He doesn't take the mistake very well and, from his newfound understanding of the Enolian penal system, he says that he "wonder[s] how many other don't belong [on Canamar]".

Finally, CBS is doing the right thing about "The Reagans." Under pressure the network has decided not to air the two-part biopic, steering it instead to the cable outlet Showtime (like CBS, owned by Viacom). But just because a far smaller audience will now see the film (Showtime draws maybe a million viewers on a top night) doesn�t make this story any more accurate. According to the screenplay for �The Reagans,� my father is a homophobic Bible-thumper who loudly insisted that his son wasn�t gay when Ron took up ballet, and who in a particularly scathing scene told my mother that AIDS patients deserved their fate. �They who live in sin shall die in sin,� the writers and producers had him say.

CBS execs say the line about AIDS victims has now been deleted. I asked Bert Fields, one of America�s best known entertainment attorneys, who is not my lawyer but is a friend, to call CBS head Les Moonves and point out how painful the line was. My mother, through her attorney Ira Revitch, also wrote to Mr. Moonves asking for its removal. Not only did my father never say such a thing, he never would have. If you have any doubts, read the recently published book of his letters. They reveal a man whose compassion for other people is deep and earnest, and whose spiritual life is based on faith in a loving God, not a vengeful one.

I was about eight or nine years old when I learned that some people are gay — although the word �gay� wasn�t used in those years. I don�t remember what defining word was used, if any; what I do remember is the clear, smooth, non-judgmental way in which I was told. The scene took place in the den of my family�s Pacific Palisades home. My father and I were watching an old Rock Hudson and Doris Day movie. At the moment when Hudson and Doris Day kissed, I said to my father, �That looks weird.� Curious, he asked me to identify exactly what was weird about a man and woman kissing, since I�d certainly seen such a thing before. All I knew was that something about this particular man and woman was, to me, strange. My father gently explained that Mr. Hudson didn�t really have a lot of experience kissing women; in fact, he would much prefer to be kissing a man. This was said in the same tone that would be used if he had been telling me about people with different colored eyes, and I accepted without question that this whole kissing thing wasn�t reserved just for men and women.

You should know this story because it�s something the producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron won�t tell you. They have exhibited astounding carelessness and cruelty in their depiction of my father and my entire family. They never consulted any family member, nor did they speak to anyone who has known us throughout the years. In the New York Times on October 21st, one of the writers admitted that the line about AIDS victims was completely fabricated. In that same article, Jim Rutenberg reported that the producers claimed no major event was depicted without two confirming sources.

When you are part of a public family, a different standard applies. Every part of your life is regarded as accessible. I accept things that other people see as strange, like magazines and news organizations compiling obituary pieces for my father in 1994 after he wrote his now-famous letter to the country saying he had Alzheimer�s. Requests for an interview or article, to be held back until the time of his passing, didn�t sting me or even seem inappropriate. Death is a delicate matter, but it will come, and my father is part of history. It�s a far different thing to learn that people who have never met you wrote a script meant to eviscerate your family and it has now been filmed and scheduled for broadcast.

Reading the script actually made me feel better in some ways. It is, quite simply, idiotic. Everyone is a caricature, manufactured and inauthentic. My father is depicted as some demented evangelist, going on about Armageddon every chance he gets. My mother is cast as a female Attila the Hun, and I and my siblings are unrecognizable to me. There are absurdities, like depictions of Mike Deaver and political aides camping out at our house during my father�s early political career — in every scene, there they are, hanging around the house day and night. I suppose this is meant to explain why, when my sister Maureen visits, my mother tells her to sleep on the floor. Funny, but I have no recollection of any of this. Nor do I remember conducting an impromptu yoga class at my wedding reception. (I promise you, no one at my wedding was chanting Om or Shanti.)

But the idiocy of the script can�t dilute the cruelty behind it. To deliberately and calculatingly depict public people as shallow, intolerant, cold and inept, with no truths or facts to back up the portrayals, is nothing short of malevolent. Many of the people depicted in the script are dead — Lew Wasserman, my sister Maureen, my grandparents, Don Regan. They can say nothing about their portrayals. And my father, obviously, cannot correct the lies told about him.

Consider the scene in a girls� boarding school I supposedly was attending when my father was elected governor of California (I was never at an all-girls� boarding school.) They have a classmate saying to me, �Hitler�s just been elected governor.� No one writes a line like that with any other agenda except to wound. Later in the script, Don Regan refers to my mother as �Madame Fuhrer.� I�m quite sure he never did, but the feelings of those behind this project is made clear. Anger and vitriol always leak through if you�re a writer with those demons inside you.

I know a bit about that. In my early career as a writer, I was an angry one. In 1992 when I wrote an autobiography, we were still a family in turmoil and while I did write about healing and letting go of the past, I still had a firm grip on those grudges. Throughout the years, there have occasionally been offers to purchase the rights to my autobiography and I have always declined. Foolishly, I believed I had control over my own material. Apparently I don�t. There is a scene in �The Reagans� in which my character steals tranquilizers from my mother�s medicine cabinet. I wrote about having done that and trading those pills for amphetamines — an addiction that ravaged me from the age of fifteen well into my twenties. Many women in the Sixties were prescribed tranquilizers, and my mother never noticed hers missing, so she couldn�t have been using them too often. You won�t get this context in the CBS movie; they just wanted you to know there were drugs on the premises.

My father would probably say, �This too shall pass.� And it will. We will continue to come to his bedside, knowing that death waits in the doorway and will one day reach for him. We will continue to cherish the fact that we walked away from our old battlegrounds and discovered how much better peace feels. We will look at each other through the clear glass of the present, not the mud-spatter of the past. What a pity the producers missed out on that part of the story.

KIRKLAND — Bobby Engram never posed much of a threat to Mike Holmgren's Green Bay Packers when the two dwelled in the NFC Central during the late 1990s.

True to his reputation as a possession receiver, the former Chicago Bear averaged just three catches for 34 yards and never had more than five receptions or 68 receiving yards during six games.

But his signing with the Seahawks yesterday says as much about the lack of talent among the league's unemployed pass catchers as it does about the state of Seattle's young receivers. The 28-year-old Engram, a five-year veteran, might be the best of both groups.

The Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award, was the brainchild of Abraham Lincoln, who sought to recognize exceptional bravery during the Civil War. At the time, the only battlefield distinction was the Purple Heart, awarded in those days for meritorious service, not as it is today, for wounds received in combat.

Since then, about 3,500 Medals of Honor have been awarded. In more recent times, since World War I, most have been posthumous, and there has been no living recipient for any conflict since Vietnam. Today, there are only 110 living recipients, and many of them will be on the Yorktown on Wednesday for the grand opening of the Medal of Honor Museum in South Carolina.







The museum is the principal repository for artifacts relating to the Medal of Honor, but the real thrust of the place is not just the display of things but also the perpetuation of the concept of selfless service to country and comrades. There is an emotion generated there that can be duplicated nowhere else, and one reason is the actions of people. Try these:

Jack Lucas

Jack Lucas was a bit bigger than other kids his age and spent some time at a military prep school. So, when World War II began, he successfully lied about his age and enlisted in the Marines Corps when he was 13 years old. He was so good in boot camp that he was made an instructor, at 14. Not content to serve in the States while his buddies were in combat, he got himself aboard a ship bound for the South Pacific. Landing on Iwo Jima, Lucas saved his fellow Marines by throwing himself on two hand grenades. He miraculously survived devastating injuries, and when he received the Medal from President Harry Truman, Lucas was the youngest recipient since the Civil War.


The behavior of these gallant people was extraordinary, but the basic underpinnings of it are not. American service members are imbued with a code that transcends background, race and every other demographic distinction: don’t surrender if you can fight, never cooperate with your captors, accomplish the mission at all cost, love your comrades.

And so it’s not surprising that every recipient of the Medal of Honor will tell you that he wears it not for himself but for those who can’t: all the men and women who sacrificed so that we can live in freedom. It’s something worth remembering each time we have a chance to help our neighbors and instead turn the other way.

Defiant Nickels promises to campaign hard for a tunnel

Seattle Times staff reporter

A defiant Mayor Greg Nickels said this morning he would continue to push for a waterfront tunnel to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct in the face of strong opposition from Gov. Christine Gregoire and state legislative leaders.

Nickels said a new elevated freeway would create a wall between Seattle and its waterfront.

He said his message to Gregoire is "tear down this wall."

Ron Sims Wins Formal Approval

SEATTLE - Vowing a better partnership in King County leadership, Metropolitan King County Councilman Ron Sims won formal approval this morning to become the next county executive.

The Republican-controlled County Council voted 11-0 to confirm Sims as the successor to Gary Locke, who will leave the post in early January to become governor. Sims takes over the county's top administrative job on Jan. 13.
