EPISODE RECAP
Commander Adama consults with the young prodigy Dr. Zee concerning the news that the fleet has at last found Earth. He is told that after coming so far, Earth does not appear to be technologically advanced enough to defend itself or protect the refugees from the Cylons. Dr. Zee tells him that not only can they not land, but they have in fact led the Cylons directly to Earth, the last human civilization.
Adama addresses an audience of senior officers. He tells them the information that Dr. Zee has gathered about Earth by monitoring transmissions. Dr. Zee shows them a video of Earth and teaches them of the pollution, followed by a simulation of Earth being attacked and destroyed by Cylon fighters. Adama explains that by landing, they would be dooming Earth as well as themselves. Xavier asks what they are to do now. Dr. Zee says that they have to wait for Earth to develop technologically, and that they can only nudge Earth to develop only slightly more than it would naturally. They will send down teams to secretly give technology to Earth scientists over time.

Various types of particles and radiation travel through outer space, including cosmic background radiation, which has been carefully studied through measurements from the COBE satellite. John Mather, a driving force in the project, had particular responsibility for a part that in 1989 indicated that cosmic background radiation's spectrum corresponds to black-body radiation - radiation emitted by a dark, glowing body. The result provided evidence that the background radiation is a remnant from the creation of the universe in the Big Bang.

ABSTRACT
NASA’s COsmic Background Explorer satellite mission, the COBE, laid the foundations for modern cosmology by measuring the spectrum and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation, and discovering the cosmic infrared background radiation. I describe the history of the COBE project, its scientific context, the people who built it, and the scientific results. The COBE observed the universe on the largest scales possible, by mapping the cosmic microwave and infrared background radiation fields and determining their spectra. It produced conclusive evidence that the hot Big Bang theory of the early universe is correct, showed that the early universe was very uniform but not perfectly so, and that the total luminosity of post-Big Bang objects is twice as great as previously believed.

The COBE was built in-house by Goddard Space Flight Center, with a helium cryostat provided by Ball Aerospace, and was launched on a Delta rocket built by McDonnell Douglas. It is in a circular orbit 900 km above the Earth, in a plane inclined 99 degrees to the equator and roughly perpendicular to the line to the Sun. It carried three instruments, a Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS), a Differential Microwave Radiometer with three channels (DMR), and a Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE).

This radiation is interpreted as the relic of an incredibly hot and dense early phase of the universe. In such a hot and dense phase, the creation, destruction, and energy equilibration of photons with one another and with all other forms of matter and energy would occur very rapidly compared with the expansion time scale of the universe. Such a state would immediately produce a blackbody radiation field. The expanding universe should preserve this blackbody spectrum, so measurement of any significant deviation from a perfect blackbody spectrum would either invalidate the whole idea of the Big Bang, or show that energy (e.g. from decay of primordial particles) was added to the CMBR after the rapid equilibration ended.

Cosmological theories live or die by their predictions. Astrophysicists George Smoot and John Mather proposed to seek the tiny differences from uniformity in the cosmic background radiation that the inflationary theory predicted, and NASA built a costly satellite that could do the job. In 1992 they reported finding wrinkles in the background radiation, of the size predicted for seeds out of which our complex universe grew.

The DMR instrument was the second to produce cosmological results. The data analysis team worked diligently to understand the needed corrections for known systematic errors, particularly the magnetic and thermal sensitivities of the Dicke switches, and the stray light from bright objects like the Earth. The first hint that we had detected a cosmic anisotropy was shown to the Science Working Group at a special team meeting at Nancy Boggess’s home in October 1991 by Ned Wright, who had written his own analysis program for the first year of DMR data. The immediate response of the science team was that this was very important, too important to release quickly. We were well aware of recent junk science results on polywater, cold fusion, and other topics, and we were determined to get the answer right. There were three main issues. First, were all the known instrument errors properly modeled and compensated? Second, had we properly understood and removed the effects of the Galactic foreground electrons and dust? And third, were the elaborate computer programs reliable?

Finally, the results were ready and prepared for publication. The announcement was made at the meeting of the American Physical Society in April 1992 in Washington, D.C. There had been enough advance publicity, and some leaks, that the press conference was filled with TV cameras and reporters. Within the day, the results were reported worldwide, and George Smoot’s famous remark about seeing the face of God made the news everywhere. Steven Hawking is quoted as saying something like this was “the most important discovery of the century, if not of all time.” The next day, interpretive papers had been submitted and distributed on the worldwide web by leading cosmologists, who had everything written in advance except the conclusions. Within the year, there were thousands more papers citing our results.

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope will direct its infrared gaze on young stellar objects in a range of locations, including the Large Magellanic Cloud’s N79. Why? To determine if there are substantial differences when stars form at a lower metallicity. (The amount of metals—elements heavier than helium—a star contains is one sign that planets may orbit it.)
This giant star cluster, known as Westerlund 2, contains some of our galaxy’s hottest, brightest, and most massive stars. Hubble’s near-infrared imaging camera pierced through the dust to reveal more than 3,000.

Cosmology and the Cosmic Microwave Background
The Universe is approximately about 13.7 billion years old, according to the standard cosmological Big Bang model. At this time, it was a state of high uniformity, was extremely hot and dense was filled with elementary particles and was expanding very rapidly. About 380,000 years after the Big Bang, the energy of the photons had decreased and was not sufficient to ionise hydrogen atoms. Thereafter the photons “decoupled” from the other particles and could move through the Universe essentially unimpeded. The Universe has expanded and cooled ever since, leaving behind a remnant of its hot past, the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB). We observe this today as a 2.7 K thermal blackbody radiation filling the entire Universe. Observations of the CMB give a unique and detailed information about the early Universe, thereby promoting cosmology to a precision science. Indeed, as will be discussed in more detail below, the CMB is probably the best recorded blackbody spectrum that exists. Removing a dipole anisotropy, most probably due our motion through the Universe, the CMB is isotropic to about one part in 100,000. The 2006 Nobel Prize in physics highlights detailed observations of the CMB performed with the COBE (COsmic Background Explorer) satellite.
