Bill, thank you very much. And Bob Herbold, thank you for inviting me to come here today. (The next comment refers to the former Army officer who is now in MS training) I had mixed emotions about you leaving the military and coming to work here. (Laughter.) And I'll tell you, I gave you mild applause. (Laughter.)
I might also point out that we have some seats that say, "Reserved for the Cohen staff," that anyone who does not want to stand up can use. Though I like the notion of having standing room only -- (laughter) But if you'd like to have a seat, we have plenty of room up front.
Coming to the Microsoft campus was something of a unique experience, as we landed in a big helicopter and I was commenting that they probably think this is "Red Dawn" -- (laughter) -- or an invasion by aliens, coming in this large helicopter.
But I always think, when I go to a campus, of my oldest son when he graduated from Bowdoin College so many years ago. He always told me about the story of the most popular professor on campus. He was popular -- he was a religion professor -- but he was popular because he always asked the same question every year on the final exam -- (laughter) -- "Discuss the wanderings of St. Paul." And the students, of course, loved him because they would wait until the final couple of days, they'd cram and they'd ace the exam the next day. Except my son's final year, when all the students walked into the classroom, they sat down, and they looked at the exam question and, you know, you could see the hands started to shake, butterflies, some became ill, and they all walked out of the room within about three or four minutes, totally dispirited, except for one student, who sat there and wrote and wrote and wrote.
The question on the exam was, "Discuss the meaning of Christ's Sermon on the Mount." And so the student took the full three hours to fill out his blue books. He finally handed them in to his professor and he walked out the center aisle with what Mark Twain would call the "calm confidence of a Christian holding four aces." (Laughter.)
And the professor looked down at the exam book and it said, "To the experts I leave the meaning of Christ's Sermon on the Mount. As for me, I should like to discuss the wanderings of St. Paul." (Laughter.)
So, I thought I might wander a little bit with you this afternoon, and take you on a journey perhaps that some of you have not experienced.

You know, it's always heartening to see young people in politics, and it is especially for me, because when I first became active and ran for Governor in California, it was in those riotous days of the sixties. Now, during the last election, the difference was that I couldn't help but notice that wherever we went, there was a large contingent of Teen Age Republicans who were working their hearts out in the campaign.
You had a significant impact on the outcome in the last election in a number of areas. You walked the precincts, you licked stamps, stuffed envelopes, got senior citizens to the polls, and babysat while mothers voted. It may not sound very glamorous, but it's absolutely essential and especially in this era of campaign spending limitations. And it very often, what you did, makes the difference between winning and losing. It happens on election day— [applause] .—
You know, during the last decade there was a vocal minority of American young people who were attracted to, let us say, alien ideologies. And they got the lion's share of the public attention, while many good things were accomplished by young people such as Teen Age Republicans, and that went unacknowledged because the attention was being paid the other way. That's nothing new, however. President Woodrow Wilson noted the same thing way back in 1914. When he was speaking of young people, he said, "They're generally thought of to be arch-radicals. As a matter of fact, they're the most conservative people I've ever dealt with."

I wonder if that pilot flying the A-6 I was in that was shot down on 2/14/86 was named Ken Morgan. In my symbolic "memories," Ken Morgan was a guy who lived off Hicks Road between our house and
I "remember" that Ken had some kind of little car that was not unlike Comet, but I can't "remember" the make Ken drove. It might have been a Mustang II, which I think was very different than the Mustang. But I "remember" it was a butt-ugly yellowish-green kind of color. I also "remember" that Ken liked to pull back the emergency brake when he was driving because it would cause the car to spin around a few times. I have this visualization in my mind of sitting there talking to him in that car and I can picture him half-looking at me as he had his hand on the emergency brake and saying he was going to pull it. But he must not have because I don't "remember" the car spinning around. What is really odd about that "memory" is that it is right around the point on Hicks Road where Michael died. I was thinking about these times when the hood flew up on my red Ford as I was traveling down Hicks Road. It was lucky we didn't crash. The woman holding the torch during the intro for Columbia pictures looks a lot like a girlfriend I used to have. 1980. That was the year we moved from DeQueen to Ashdown. I think it was '81 when we moved onto Hicks Road. I started school at Ashdown Jr. High in '80. We had our 10 year reunion in '94 at the junior high school. I was teaching myself how to read Russian that year.

I've been thinking for a while that the dreams I have are literal. They are the foreign dreams I used to write, the dreams produced by the manipulators of my thoughts. Don't know what to say about that last one. Jumbled, disturbing, painful. Somebody put in a lot of effort to make me forget those memories, if it is real. There was a scene there straight out the opening of "Saving Private Ryan" except that it seemed to be in the Middle East. And it was something like a pyramid I was running into, and I was by myself and every gun, there were countless guns, was turning towards me. It was sort of like a pyramid I was rushing onto, except that it was elogated, like a castle wall. In another scene, a two-star general or admiral was captured by the enemy. Back in the stretched-pyramid, I was fighting off an attack. Grenades were flying in on me, but I don't recall them going off. Then, I and some of my fellow soldiers seemed to be cleaning the place. A lot of
other stuff that is fading from my mind. I feel sad, very sad.
I was thinking again last night about that American Legion award from my symbolic memory. I received it towards the end of my Junior year at Ashdown. I allegedly went to Iraq in my Junior year at the Academy in 1981. I wonder if it represents the Medal of Honor.

HONOLULU - The Navy says a fire aboard the USS George Washington aircraft carrier has left one sailor with minor burns and 23 others with heat stress. The Navy said Friday that sailors extinguished the fire several hours after flames were spotted Thursday in the rear of the nuclear-powered ship. It says the carrier's propulsion plant was not damaged and the fire did not threaten the safety of the ship's nuclear reactor.

Vulcan and Portland Arena Management have completed the deal for Vulcan to acquire the Rose Garden arena. Terms weren't disclosed. Read the full release here.
UPDATE: Tod Leiweke, president of Vulcan Sports and Entertainment, says that overall Vulcan approves of the job that Global Spectrum has done in managing the Rose Garden. They're in preliminary talks to see if they can work out a longterm deal with them.

PORTLAND, April 2, 2007 – Vulcan Inc. today announced the completion of the acquisition of the Rose Garden Arena pursuant to a purchase agreement entered into with Portland Arena Management LLC (PAM), under which an affiliate of Vulcan will acquire ownership of PAM, which owns, among other things, the Rose Garden Arena. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Vulcan Inc. is owned by Paul G. Allen, who also owns Trail Blazers Inc.
"This is a major milestone and a positive step for the franchise,” said Paul Allen.

Months of stalking end with 2 dead at UW
Rebecca Griego called her ex-boyfriend Jonathan Rowan "a psycho from the past." He wouldn't stop calling her office at the University of Washington. When she no longer would answer the phone, he harassed her sister and threatened to kidnap her dogs.
On Monday morning, Rowan found Griego alone in her fourth-floor office in Gould Hall and fatally shot her before killing himself.
