Bud: Was he injured, ma'am?

Mrs. Van Arsdale: Surface wounds. I can't vouch for the state of his heart, though. He lost every friend he's ever had.

Task force commander has busy first week

By Andrew Scutro - Staff writer

Posted : Wednesday Apr 22, 2009 17:25:11 EDT

Rear Adm. Michelle Howard took command of the Navy’s counterpiracy task force with incredible timing: Within three days of her April 5 turnover with outgoing Rear Adm. Terry McKnight, Somali pirates attacked the U.S.-flagged cargo ship Maersk Alabama and took its captain hostage.

Howard said she expected to be handed a full plate.

“It was full before I got here. I just got a little more exciting,” she said in a telephone interview from the amphibious assault ship Boxer. “It’s probably one of the most exciting missions the Navy has been on in for a long while.”

While some call for more aggressive action against pirates pending some international solution ashore, Howard said the mission of Combined Task Force 151 will remain deterring and disrupting piracy off the Horn of Africa.

“Right now, the policy is, fight piracy, and I am all about that policy,” she said. “We are quite capable of staying out here and doing this mission.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courts-martial_in_the_United_States

Courts-martial in the United States

Courts-martial in the United States are criminal trials conducted by the Military of the United States. Most commonly, courts-martial are convened to try members of the U.S. military for violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which is the U.S. military's criminal code. However, they can also be convened for other purposes, including military tribunals and the enforcement of martial law in an occupied territory. Courts-martial are governed by the rules of procedure and evidence laid out in the Manual for Courts-Martial and Military Rules of Evidence, respectively.

a military judge determines questions of law, and the members of the panel (or military judge in a judge-alone case) determine questions of fact.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_of_the_Armies

General of the Armies

General of the Armies and General of the Armies of the United States are the highest possible ranks in the United States Army.

After World War II, which saw the introduction of U.S. "5-star" officers who outranked Washington, both Congress and the President revisited the issue of Washington's rank. To maintain George Washington's proper position as the first Commanding General of the United States Army, he was appointed, posthumously, to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States by congressional joint resolution Public Law 94-479 January 19, 1976, approved by President Gerald R. Ford on October 11, 1976. The law established the grade as having "rank and precedence over all other grades of the Army, past or present,"clearly making it superior to General of the Army. The Department of the Army Order 31-3, issued on March 13, 1978 had an effective appointment date of July 4, 1976. The rank ensures that no United States military officer outranks George Washington

Fleet Admiral (United States)

Fleet Admiral of the United States Navy (FADM), or more commonly referred to as Fleet Admiral, is a five-star flag officer rank and is presently considered the highest possible rank in the United States Navy.

The insignia for Fleet Admiral comprises five stars in a pentagon design with a thick rank stripe, below four smaller stripes, on the service dress blue uniform.

The Fleet Admiral rank is reserved for war-time use only

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marshals_Service

United States Marshals Service

The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a United States federal law enforcement agency within the United States Department of Justice (see 28 U.S.C. § 561). Although the Marshals Service itself dates only to 1969, the office of U.S. Marshal is the oldest federal law enforcement office in the United States.

The USMS is the enforcement arm of the United States federal courts. U.S. Marshals protect court officers and buildings and ensure the effective operation of the judicial system. The US Marshals Service assists with court security and prisoner transport, serves arrest warrants and seeks fugitives.

Regional Organization

The U.S. court system is divided into 94 Districts, each with a U.S. Marshal, a Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal (GS-15) (and an Assistant Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal (GS-14) in certain larger districts), Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshals (GS-13), and as many Deputy U.S. Marshals (GS-5 and above) and Special Deputy U.S. Marshals as needed.

The US Marshal of a US Circuit Court is the US Marshal in whose district that court is located.

The Director and each United States Marshal is appointed by the President of the United States and subject to confirmation by the United States Senate. The District U.S. Marshal is traditionally appointed from a list of qualified law enforcement personnel for that district or state. Each state has at least one district, while several larger states have three or more.

Titles

United States Marshal—for the top executive Marshal's Service position (political appointment) in a Federal judicial district.

Chief Deputy United States Marshal—the senior career manager for the Federal judicial district who is responsible for management of the Marshal's office and staff.

Plot Summary for

"The Simpsons"

Homer vs. the 18th Amendment (1997)

Bart gets drunk during a St. Patrick's Day Parade, provoking the city government to enforce a two-hundred year old prohibition law. Rex Banner, an Elliot Ness-type character, takes over the police force to help enforce the law, since Wiggum failed to do do. Meanwhile, Homer decides to make money for himself as a bootlegger, calling himself "The Beer Baron."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer_vs._The_Eighteenth_Amendment

Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment

"Homer vs. The Eighteenth Amendment" is the eighteenth episode of The Simpsons' eighth season, which originally aired March 16, 1997. Prohibition is enacted in Springfield and Homer helps fight it by illegally supplying alcohol to the town. It was written by John Swartzwelder, and directed by Bob Anderson. Guest starring Dave Thomas as Rex Banner and Joe Mantegna as Fat Tony

A prohibitionist movement emerges in Springfield after Bart accidentally gets drunk during a St. Patrick's Day celebration. The municipal government discovers alcohol has actually been banned for two centuries, and moves to enforce the law, prompting Moe to disguise what remains a bar as a pet shop. With the town becoming impatient with the police's incompetence, Chief Wiggum is replaced by Rex Banner, an officer of the United States Treasury Department.

In the mean time, Homer figures out a way to keep Moe's bar operating, through bootlegging. One night, he and Bart sneak out to the city dump to reclaim the beer that was disposed of when the Prohibition law began to be enforced. He then sets up shop in his basement pouring the beer into hollow bowling balls. Using an intricate set of pipes under the Bowlerama, he bowls the balls into Moe's. Marge actually thinks it's a great idea once she catches on. The media realizes someone is allowing Springfield's underground alcohol trade to flourish, and they give the still-unknown Homer the nickname "Beer Baron". Rex Banner fails to catch the Baron and resorts to stopping people in the street to question them.

When his supply of beer runs out, Homer begins to brew his own "moonshine". However, his stills started to explode. He is then confronted by a desperate Chief Wiggum. In an attempt to rekindle Wiggum's career, Homer allows the former Police Chief to turn him in. The punishment that awaits him is death by catapult, showing how anachronistic the law really was. In the end, it is Rex Banner who is catapulted

I sat in this location for hours and the map is a good illustration of why I was there. I had been expecting the Navy to meet with me at that location and I assume that is why the Momsen was there on my birthday but I wondered if they were only there to remind me that I wasn't forgotten while I continue my assignment or they were there because they were being obstructed by hostile forces from transporting me back to base.

Assuming this link will still work, as it recently stopped working, the illustration points out where I spent many hours sitting. If you trace back to the 3 unmistakable landmarks that are the antennas on one of the Seattle hills, then it is perfectly aligned with streets 3rd and Thomas. Those 3 towers are more distinctive to the Seattle skyline than is the Space Needle. I was also sitting there all that time in plain sight of the Seattle P-I news building.

Jake took a deep breath. "I can only speak for myself. I got tired of risking my ass and my bombardier's, plus a valuable airplane, night after night, bombing targets that were absolutely worthless: suspected truck stops, suspected troop biovouacs, sampan repair yards that had been bombed ten times before, road intersections - you get the idea." He took another deep breath. "I don't know who picks the targets, but I'll bet a year's pay that they don't fly through the flak and risk their precious asses bombing them."

He looked around at the other faces in the room. "My first bombardier, Morgan McPherson, and about fifty thousand other Americans are dead. Not all these men died actually fighting. Some died on the flight decks, launching planes. But they were all engaged in one effort. So, what did they all die for? Does anybody know? I don't, but I do know this: McPherson didn't get killed hitting a worthwhile target. He died bombing a bunch of trees. I only wish he and I had been swinging with our best punch against a target that made sense when he caught that bullet."

Cowardice

Cowardice describes a personality trait which is typically viewed as a negative characteristic and has been generally frowned upon (see norms) within most, if not all global cultures, while courage, typically viewed as its direct opposite, is generally rewarded and encouraged.

"Cowardice" can be difficult to define outside of specific social contexts. In general terms, it is the perceived failure to demonstrate sufficient bravery in the face of an adverse situation. Cowards are usually seen to have avoided or refused to engage in a confrontation or struggle which has been deemed good or righteous by the wider culture in which they live.

On a more mundane level, the label may be applied to those who are regarded as too frightened to defend their rights or those of others from aggressors in their lives.

Etymology

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word "coward" comes from an Old French word coart (modern French couard), a combination of the word for "tail" and an agent noun suffix. It would therefore have meant "one with a tail" — perhaps one in the habit of turning it, or it may be derived from the dog's habit of putting its tail between its legs when it is afraid.

Eleanor Holm

Eleanor G. Holm (December 6, 1913 – January 31, 2004) was an American swimmer. An Olympic champion, she is best known for having been suspended from the 1936 Summer Olympics team, after she had attended a cocktail party on the transatlantic cruise ship taking her to Germany. She went on to have a high-profile celebrity career as actress and singer, socialite and interior designer that included co-starring as Jane in a Hollywood Tarzan movie.

Competing as Eleanor Holm Jarrett, she was selected for the 1936 Olympics. Unfortunately, after a drinking party aboard the ship transporting the team, Holm was found, according to the team doctor, in a state approaching a coma. According to David Wallechinsky, The Complete Book of the Summer Olympics, the Olympic team doctor reported that she was suffering from acute alcoholism, but Holm denied it.

Team leader Avery Brundage promptly suspended her from the Olympic team. Holm, admitting to having had a few drinks, subsequently maintained that her suspension arose from a personal grudge held by Brundage.

"This chaperone came up to me and told me it was time to go to bed. God, it was about 9 o'clock, and who wanted to go down in that basement to sleep anyway? So I said to her: `Oh, is it really bedtime? Did you make the Olympic team or did I?' I had had a few glasses of Champagne. So she went to Brundage and complained that I was setting a bad example for the team, and they got together and told me the next morning that I was fired. I was heartbroken."
Holm's Olympic teammates petitioned unsuccessfully to overturn the suspension. The top favorite for the 100-meter backstroke event, Holm watched from the stands as the title went to Dutch swimmer Nida Senff.

Though she would appear in at least four films as herself, Holm appeared in only one Hollywood feature film, starring opposite fellow Olympian Glenn Morris in the 1938 film Tarzan's Revenge.

Tarzan's Revenge

Release date(s) January 7, 1938

Tarzan's Revenge (1938) is an adventure film starring Glenn Morris in his only outing as Tarzan. Eleanor Holm, a popular swimming star, co-starred as Eleanor Reed. The movie was produced by Sol Lesser, written by R. Lee Johnson and Jay Vann (based on the character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs) and directed by D. Ross Lederman. The film was released on January 7, 1938.

Eleanor Reed accompanies her parents, Roger and Penny, and Nevil Potter, her fiance, on an expedition to Africa to capture wild animals to sell to a zoo. Ben Alleu Bey spots Eleanor and wishes her to become the one hundredth wife in his harem. When she refuses, he follows their safari.

Both groups are followed closely by Tarzan, who releases the animals and woos Eleanor away from both Nevin and Bey. When Nevin discovers that Eleanor plans to remain behind with Tarzan, he attempts to kill him, but only grazes his shoulder with a round fired at close range. Tarzan attacks Nevin, but releases him at Eleanor's behest. As the Reeds' ship sails down the river, Tarzan and Eleanor go for a swim.

Glenn Morris as Tarzan

Eleanor Holm as Eleanor Reed, pseudo-Jane

Production notes

Lesser refused to call the lead female character Jane—according to him, Eleanor Holm was so famous for her swimming exploits that audiences would not accept her portraying anyone other than someone named Eleanor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mania

Mania

Mania is a severe medical condition characterized by extremely elevated mood, energy, unusual thought patterns and sometimes psychosis. There are several possible causes for mania, but it is most often associated with bipolar disorder, where episodes of mania may cyclically alternate with episodes of major depression. These cycles may relate to diurnal rhythms and environmental stressors. Mania varies in intensity, from mild mania (known as hypomania) to full-blown mania with psychotic features (hallucinations and delusions).

Manic patients may need to be hospitalized to protect themselves and others.

Symptoms of mania include rapid speech, racing thoughts, decreased need for sleep, hypersexuality, euphoria, impulsiveness, grandiosity, and increased interest in goal-directed activities. Mild forms of mania, known as hypomania, cause little or no impairment, but some people who suffer from prolonged hypomania may develop full mania.

Another symptom of mania is racing thoughts during which the sufferer is excessively distracted by unimportant stimuli. This negative experience creates an inability to function and an absentmindedness where the manic individual's thoughts totally preoccupy him or her, making him or her unable to keep track of time or be aware of anything besides the neurological pattern of thoughts.

Manic symptoms include irritability, anger or rage, delusions, hypersensitivity, hypersexuality, hyper-religiosity, hyperactivity, impulsiveness, racing thoughts, talkativeness, pressure to keep talking or rapid speech, and grandiose ideas and plans, decreased need for sleep (e.g. feels rested after 3 or 4 hours of sleep). In manic and hypomanic cases, the afflicted person may engage in out of character behavior such as questionable business transactions, wasteful expenditures of money, risky sexual activity, abnormal social interaction, or highly vocal arguments uncharacteristic of previous behaviors. These behaviors increase stress in personal relationships, problems at work and increases the risk of altercations with law enforcement as well as being at high risk of impulsively taking part in activities potentially harmful to self and others.

US Marine Corps 1LT Paul Wang: Get out of here. I'm trading you. Hey, Colonel, come on. I need a new guy on my team.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: Guy?! What do you think, we're back on the blocks smoking and joking? Hear this loud and clear, Marine. I am not your guy. I am not your joe. I am not your damn drinking buddy. And I sure as hell am not a mark in a singles bar. You hear this, C.F.B. I am not here to make friends! When this war ends and you go back to raising money for charity and you're eating dogs at Wrigley - and you go back to Mayberry - I'm still going to be out here - waiting for the next one. That's why I'm here.

00:09:47

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: "Looking darkly upon Hektor swift-footed Achilleus answered 'I cannot forgive you. As there are no trustworthy oaths between men and lions there can be no love between you and me. One of the other must fall before then to glut with his blood, Ares, the god who fights under the shields guard. Remember every valor of yours for now the need comes hardest upon you to be a spearman and a bold warrior. There shall be no escape for you. You will pay in a lump for all those sorrows of my companions you killed in your spear's fury.'"

00:10:37

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: In summation, gentlemen, my proposal is to flush out the bogey via the use of a diversionary squadron whose rules of engagement are to turn tail and run while an SA-43, equipped with the Sewell Fuel missile, executing a forward quarter intercept, rises from behind cover of the retreating squadron, fires the missile and terminates the enemy target.

US Navy Admiral Broden: Outstanding, Colonel. Outstanding.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: Thank you, sir.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant General Alcott: Now, if we can only find this Chiggie von Richthofen.

US Navy Commodore Ross: Intelligence is combing every known sector.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: Gentlemen, if I may.

US Navy Admiral Broden: Go ahead, Colonel.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: It would be the most glorious honor of a long military career if this Colonel was assigned as pilot of the intercepting SA-43.

US Navy Commodore Ross: Colonel McQueen, your flight status is grounded.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: Yes, sir, this is due to the surgical insertion in the inner ear of a myoelectronic feedback device to counter the vestibulocochlear nerve damage sustained in battle, sir.

US Navy Commodore Ross: Then you know as well as anyone that an M.E.F. device cannot withstand the g-force demands placed upon an attack jet pilot.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: I'll take that chance, sir.

US Navy Commodore Ross: Chance? Colonel, even the device in your thick skull does not full-on erupt during A.C.M., it would, at the very least stress your temporal lobe to the point of loss of consciousness, seizure and death. I refuse to hand the Chigs a 'gimme.'

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: Then I will have the device removed, sir.

US Navy Commodore Ross: You'll be vomiting every five steps.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: Gentlemen, if I commit to the procedure of having the M.E.F. device removed, pass the physical requirements and achieve approved flight status will I be assigned?

US Navy Admiral Broden: Colonel, this is the single most important mission of the war.

US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: That's why I should be the one to fly it, sir.

00:13:16

Mr. Howard Sewell: Refining process is nominal?

Missile technician: Yes, Mr. Sewell.

Mr. Howard Sewell: Then it's ready to go?

Missile technician: We're inserting the blast fragmentation warhead now.

Mr. Howard Sewell: This missile will change the nature of the conflict. The world will no longer be fought over galactic territory but over Sewell Fuel.
