[When I just read something Bill Clinton read about not wanting to "pile on" to Cheney's shooting incident, I remembered this. The day I went back to Microsoft to ask for my job back, he was at this Costco, which I could see from the window at my cube. I thought that was quite the coincidence, and I hoped it was a good sign, albeit something extraordinary that defied my logic. I remember now too that it was on the other side of the street from that Costco where I went face first into the concrete after my bike slipped on a slick bridge. I had a black eye for a week. I still remember the date for some reason: Feb 1, 2002. I think I remembered it because I had another accident on Dec. 23, 2001, when I was biking around Lake Washington. At the 30 mile point of that 60 mile trip, I hit a patch of ice and went down hard and fast. One minute I was riding along, the next minute I was looking at my feet as I went sliding across the road. Damn that hurt. I dislocated my shoulder because my elbow hit first or right about the same time as my knee. I could barely raise my arm if at all for weeks after that. It was pretty uncomfortable riding the remaining 30 miles back home. And the whole way there and for a time afterwards, I could almost hear something, it was unusal, the way you can feel like there is something on your tongue as that saying goes, but with this, I could almost hear a "thud" sound for a while after, the sound of me hitting the ground.

The Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station is a nuclear power plant on the shore of Lake Erie near Monroe in Frenchtown Charter Township, Michigan. It is approximately halfway between Detroit, Michigan and Toledo, Ohio. Two units have been constructed on this site. The first unit's construction started in 1963, and the second unit reached criticality in 1988.
The plant is named after the Italian nuclear physicist Enrico Fermi, most noted for his work on the development of the first nuclear reactor as well as many other major contributions to nuclear physics. Fermi won the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on induced radioactivity.

The world's first commercial LMFBR, and the only one yet built in the USA, was the 94MWe Unit 1 at Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station. Designed in a joint effort between Dow Chemical and Detroit Edison as part of the Atomic Power Development Associates consortium, groundbreaking in Lagoona Beach, Michigan (near Monroe, Michigan) took place in 1956. The plant went into operation in 1963. It shut down on October 5, 1966 due to high temperatures caused by a loose piece of zirconium which was blocking the molten sodium coolant nozzles. Partial melting damage to six subassemblies within the core was eventually found. (This incident was the basis for a controversial book by investigative reporter John G. Fuller titled We Almost Lost Detroit.) The zirconium blockage was removed in April 1968, and the plant was ready to resume operation by May 1970, but a sodium coolant fire delayed its restart until July.

Twice-shot Renton officer slowly creates a new life

Larry Strauss misses many things about police work: the camaraderie, the adrenaline rush of 911 calls and catching bad guys.
But he's worried about being a target.
Few would argue with Strauss, who is believed to be the only police officer in Washington state history to have been shot in two different incidents.
Strauss figured that would be all the gunfire he'd ever see. He agreed when people called him lucky, and even joked about taking his good fortune to Las Vegas.
But on Jan. 8, 2006, Strauss stopped three jaywalkers who had crossed seven lanes of traffic. He asked the first for his name and then turned to another of the jaywalkers, Wilford Armstead, who instead bolted and jumped into a nearby van.
Armstead, who had 27 prior felonies, was wanted on a felony arrest warrant in an assault case.
Strauss later testified that he didn't remember much about what happened next. He saw Armstead reach into his coat as if he were about to pull out a weapon and then everything went black.
Armstead fired at Strauss' head four times, police say. One bullet barely missed his bulletproof vest and burrowed into his neck, leaving him with a broken collarbone, a punctured lung, a broken rib and a collapsed trachea.
In December, Armstead was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Doctors told Strauss that he was only a few centimeters from being killed. Strauss felt like the "unluckiest lucky man" alive.
Once able to run 20 miles a week, Strauss was forced to use a wheelchair immediately after the shooting. Though he gradually was able to hobble, walk and eventually run short distances, Strauss said the shooting left him forgetful.
Although the muscular 50-year-old looks healthy, he said the post-traumatic stress caused by the shooting is forcing him to retire. Strauss has been receiving disability pay from the department and will receive a pension after he retires.
A few weeks ago, Strauss was awarded his second Medal of Valor from the city of Renton for his actions on Jan. 8, 2006. He remains the only person to receive the honor.
Friday, he will be one of six officers to receive the state's law-enforcement Medal of Honor.
Strauss and State Patrol Trooper Kelly Kalmbach, who survived being shot last summer, will receive the award from [ THE KNOWN ACTIVE ACCOMPLICE OF AL QAEDA ]Gov. Christine Gregoire in Olympia.

A Stargate is a fictional portal device that allows practical, rapid travel between two distant locations. This article deals with the Stargate devices of the Stargate franchise, which first appear in the 1994 Roland Emmerich film Stargate, and subsequently carried over to the television series Stargate SG-1 and its spin-offs. In these productions the Stargate functions as a plot generator, allowing the main characters to visit alien planets without the need for spaceships or any other fictional technology.
Within the Stargate fictional universe, Stargates are large rings composed of super-conductors with nine "chevrons" spaced equally around their circumference. The inner ring, which rotates within the outer, contains thirty-nine unique symbols representing star constellations. Pairs of Stargates function by generating an artificial stable wormhole between them, allowing one-way travel through. The symbols on the inner ring of the Stargate correspond to constellations and serve to map out coordinates for various destination planets. A typical Stargate measures 6.7 m (22 ft) in diameter, weighs 29,000 kg (64,000 lb), and is made of the fictional heavy mineral "naqahdah". The Stargates were created millions of years ago by an alien race known as the Ancients; their modern history begins when Egyptologist Daniel Jackson deciphers their workings in the Stargate film.
The film Stargate rushed very quickly over how a stargate actually works and is operated, but the subsequent television shows go into this area in a great amount of detail. In SG-1, it is explained that a stargate's destination is not fixed, but is singled out by a process known as "dialing". Once a destination is selected by the traveler, the stargate generates a wormhole between itself and a complementary device at the destination, by being supplied with a threshold amount of raw energy. Objects in transit between gates are broken down into their individual elemental components, and then into energy as they pass through the event horizon, and then travel through a wormhole before being reconstructed on the other side.
Dialing
Each location served by a stargate has its own unique "address", which is a combination of seven or more non-repeating symbols appearing on the dialing stargate. By "dialing" these symbols in the correct order, the traveler selects a destination.
The show is consistent with the mechanics of address-dialing. The process involves associating a unique symbol of the inner ring to each of at least the first seven of the chevrons on the outer circumference. The main "address" is invariably dialed first, and the last symbol is the "point of origin", representing the gate being used, which acts as the final trigger for the completion of the address sequence. As each symbol is dialed, the chevron is said to "engage" or "encode" and usually responds by lighting up or moving. When the final symbol of an address is dialed, that chevron is said to "lock" and the wormhole opens

Fairly Secret Army is a British sitcom which ran to thirteen episodes over two series between 1984 and 1986. Though not a direct spin-off from The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, the lead character, Major Harry Truscott, was very similar to Geoffrey Palmer's character of Jimmy in that series, and the scripts were written by Reginald Perrin's creator and writer David Nobbs.
Harry Kitchener Wellington Truscott (ex Queen's Own West Mercian Lowlanders) is an inept and slightly barmy ex-army man intent on training a group of highly unlikely people into a secret paramilitary organisation. This idea first emerged in an episode of Perrin when Jimmy confided the plan to Reggie (who memorably rubbished it) and was based on persistent though still unsubstantiated rumours in the 1970's press that right wing generals were secretly planning a coup to rescue Britain from union militancy.

ABOARD USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (NNS) -- Life aboard USS John F. Kennedy (JFK) (CV 67) during JTFEX, or Joint Task Force Exercise, added another dimension to the lives of Naval Academy midshipmen along for a two-week, at-sea summer training program, June 1-14.
The program paired prospective officers with “running mate” Sailors who shared their technical expertise and their shipboard living experiences. The midshipmen spent their entire days with their running mates, both on watch and at meals.
A couple of the midshipmen said they will take home different perspectives on life and leadership.
“I have friends in college who are looking for summer work; I’m on an aircraft carrier," said Midshipman 2nd Class Chris Pogue of Chesapeake, Va. "I spent time with a SEAL [Sea, Air, Land] team last year. Not a lot of people get to do these things. I get to watch F-14s [Tomcats] land right next to me. How amazing is that?”
Aboard Kennedy, the 20-year-old was exposed to navigation, conning, chart work and engineering. His running mate, Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Paul Greenough taught the political science major a great deal about air traffic control at sea. Pogue appreciated and was impressed by the expertise and dedication of the Sailors who work long shifts.
