Chief Petty Officer is a non-commissioned officer or equivalent in many naval services and coast guards.
United States
Chief Petty Officer is the seventh enlisted rank in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard, just above Petty Officer First Class and below Senior Chief Petty Officer, and is a senior non-commissioned officer. The grade of Chief Petty Officer was established on April 1, 1893 for the Navy. The United States Congress first authorized the Coast Guard to use the promotion to Chief Petty Officer on 18 May 1920.
Unlike Petty Officer First Class and lower ranks, advancement to Chief Petty Officer not only carries requirements of time in service, superior evaluation scores, and specialty examinations, but also carries an added requirement of peer review. A Chief Petty Officer can only advance after review by a selection board of serving Senior and Master Chief Petty Officers, in effect "choosing their own" and conversely not choosing others.
Advancement into the Chief Petty Officer grades is the most significant promotion within the enlisted naval ranks. At the rank of Chief, the Sailor takes on more administrative duties. In the Navy, their uniform changes to reflect this change of duty, becoming identical to that of an officer's uniform except with different insignia.
Chief Petty Officers serve a dual role as both technical experts and as leaders, with the emphasis being more on leadership as they progress through the CPO ranks. A recognized, collateral duty for all Chiefs is the training of Junior Officers. Like Petty Officers, every Chief has both a rate (rank) and rating (job, similar to an MOS in other branches). A Chief's full title is a combination of the two. Thus, a Chief Petty Officer, who has the rating of Gunner's Mate would properly be called a Chief Gunner's Mate.
Each rating has an official abbreviation, such as QM for Quartermaster, BM for Boatswain's Mate, or FC for Fire Controlman. When combined with the petty officer level, this gives the short-hand for the chief's rank, such as BMC for Chief Boatswain's Mate. It is not uncommon practice to refer to the chief by this short hand in all but the most formal correspondence (such as printing and inscription on awards). Mostly, though, they are simply called "Chief", regardless of rating.

The anti-American insurgent forces that infest Seattle Times changed the photo of Steve Cox that was on their website for the main article I referenced as documentation for their criminal activity. This article has a photo that is closer to what I remember seeing the first time during December 2007 when I started reviewing this act of insurgency by Bill Gates and the murder of one of their accomplices that works for King County Washington State. I believe he was murdered by another person in the room, probably another worker for King County Washington State, who also killed the suspect, and Steve Cox was murdered specifically because the anti-American insurgents think he resembles me personally and they are pansy cowards.

Family of slain deputy to get $3.3M in settlement

The family of a King County sheriff's deputy who was killed in December 2006 by a felon under state supervision will receive nearly $3.3 million in a settlement with the Department of Corrections (DOC).
The settlement will provide Maria Cox and her 3-½-year-old son, Bronson, with financial security after the fatal shooting of Deputy Steve Cox in White Center, said her attorney, Jon Payne. Maria Cox had filed a $22 million lawsuit against DOC, seeking up to $12 million for herself and up to $10 million for her son.
"Maria is just pleased and relieved to have the matter resolved so she can move on with her son with some certainty and some financial security," said Payne.
Cox, 46, a nine-year Sheriff's Office veteran, was killed at a White Center house on Dec. 2, 2006, while investigating an assault and nonfatal shooting that had occurred earlier in the night.
Cox was inside the house questioning people one at a time when he was shot by Raymond Porter, a 23-year-old felon. Porter then exchanged gunfire with two other sheriff's deputies before he fatally shot himself.

(a) Whoever, with intent or reason to believe that it is to be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of a foreign nation, communicates, delivers, or transmits, or attempts to communicate, deliver, or transmit, to any foreign government, or to any faction or party or military or naval force within a foreign country, whether recognized or unrecognized by the United States, or to any representative, officer, agent, employee, subject, or citizen thereof, either directly or indirectly, any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, note, instrument, appliance, or information relating to the national defense, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life, except that the sentence of death shall not be imposed unless the jury or, if there is no jury, the court, further finds that the offense resulted in the identification by a foreign power (as defined in section 101(a) of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978) of an individual acting as an agent of the United States and consequently in the death of that individual, or directly concerned nuclear weaponry, military spacecraft or satellites, early warning systems, or other means of defense or retaliation against large-scale attack; war plans; communications intelligence or cryptographic information; or any other major weapons system or major element of defense strategy.
(b) Whoever, in time of war, with intent that the same shall be communicated to the enemy, collects, records, publishes, or communicates, or attempts to elicit any information with respect to the movement, numbers, description, condition, or disposition of any of the Armed Forces, ships, aircraft, or war materials of the United States, or with respect to the plans or conduct, or supposed plans or conduct of any naval or military operations, or with respect to any works or measures undertaken for or connected with, or intended for the fortification or defense of any place, or any other information relating to the public defense, which might be useful to the enemy, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life.
(c) If two or more persons conspire to violate this section, and one or more of such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each of the parties to such conspiracy shall be subject to the punishment provided for the offense which is the object of such conspiracy.
(d)
(1) Any person convicted of a violation of this section shall forfeit to the United States irrespective of any provision of State law—
(A) any property constituting, or derived from, any proceeds the person obtained, directly or indirectly, as the result of such violation, and
(B) any of the person’s property used, or intended to be used, in any manner or part, to commit, or to facilitate the commission of, such violation.

Dewey rocketed to fame in 1935, when he was appointed special prosecutor in New York County (Manhattan) by Governor Herbert H. Lehman. A "runaway grand jury" had publicly complained that William C. Dodge, the District Attorney, was not aggressively pursuing the mob and political corruption. Lehman, to avoid charges of partisanship, asked four prominent Republicans to serve as special prosecutor. All four refused and recommended Dewey.
Dewey moved ahead vigorously. He recruited a staff of over 60 assistants, investigators, process servers, stenographers, and clerks. New York Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia assigned a picked squad of 63 police officers to Dewey's office.
Dewey's targets were organized racketeering: the large-scale criminal enterprises, especially extortion, the "numbers" game, and prostitution. He pursued Tammany Hall leaders known for their ties to gangsters, such as James Joseph Hines.
One of his biggest prizes was gangster Dutch Schultz, whom he had battled as both a federal and state prosecutor. Schultz's first trial ended in a deadlock; prior to his second trial, Schultz had the venue moved to Malone, New York, then moved there and garnered the sympathy of the townspeople through charitable acts so that when it came time for his trial, the jury found him innocent, liking him too much to convict him.
Dewey and La Guardia threatened Schultz with instant arrest and further charges. Schultz now proposed to murder Dewey. Dewey would be killed while he made his daily morning call to his office from a pay phone near his home. However, New York crime boss Lucky Luciano and the "Mafia Commission" decided that Dewey's murder would provoke an all-out crackdown. Instead they had Schultz killed.
In the greatest victory of his legal career, Dewey won the conviction of Luciano for the prostitution racket, with a sentence of 30 to 50 years.

Sailors extinguished the fire several hours after flames were spotted Thursday near the auxiliary boiler room and air conditioning and refrigeration space in the rear of the nuclear powered ship. The Navy said the fire spread through a passageway for cables.
Injured sailors were treated and have returned to duty, said Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown, a spokesman for Naval Air Forces in San Diego.

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet released the below statement surrounding the damage assessment of the USS George Washington (CVN 73) following a fire at sea on Thursday, May 22:
Navy officials have nearly completed a comprehensive damage assessment following the shipboard fire aboard George Washington that occurred on May 22 while at sea. The source of the fire has not yet been determined, but the fire was located in a ventilation intake/exhaust trunk that led from the lower decks of the ship to a ventilation port on the ship's outer hull several decks above. In addition to providing a ventilation path for non-critical machinery components that are located below the ship's waterline, the trunk has numerous piping and cabling runs located within it.
Damage to USS George Washington is primarily electrical in nature with some associated structural and mechanical repairs required. Fire and heat affected electrical cabling and components running through approximately 80 spaces of the more than 3800 total spaces on the carrier. The heat generated by the fire damaged a small portion of interior structural plating which will require either repair or replacement. Piping and related valves that were exposed to heat from the fire have been inspected and will require a minimal amount of repairs. Electrical cables in the vicinity of the intake/exhaust trunk were damaged and will require repair and in some cases, replacement.

Giving up a successful career in law is an unusual route to becoming a beat cop.
But King County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox was an unusually idealistic man, say those who knew him. Frustrated with criminals beating the legal system, he left his job as a deputy prosecutor to patrol the streets in White Center, the high-crime neighborhood near where he grew up.
To business owners and residents, he became a "Superman" who was single-handedly making the streets safer and the neighborhood better. He became so deeply involved in community issues that he was elected president of the local council. To his family, he was a man who had found new joy since he and his wife, Maria, adopted a baby, Bronson, who turned 1 in October.
Now the neighborhood is mourning after Cox, 46, was shot and killed early Saturday.
Local bartender Cheryl Moss said Cox did more than anyone else to clean up drug dealing and prostitution: "He was our Superman. And now our Superman's dead."

Sheriff's deputy shot and killed

A 46-year-old King County sheriff's deputy and community activist died today after he was shot while investigating a shooting in White Center.
Deputy Steve Cox, a nine-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was shot in the head during an interview with a suspect and died at Harborview Medical Center around 6 a.m.
Cox was a longtime White Center resident, a former deputy prosecuting attorney, the president of a local community group and the married father of a baby boy.
The incident began around 1:30 a.m., when officers responded to a call reporting gunfire near the intersection of S.W. 106th and 12th Ave S.W. They found the driver of a pick-up beaten and suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
As part of their investigation, five deputies questioned more than a dozen people at a party at a nearby residence. Cox began interviewing people one by one in the bedroom. Other deputies heard shots from that direction, and headed toward the bedroom, only to be met with a fusillade of gunfire.
At least one of the deputies returned fire. In the bedroom, they found the suspect dead from their gunshots. Cox had been shot in the head by the suspect. He was taken to Harborview and later died.
For the past 3 1/2 years, Cox was assigned to the Sheriff's Office White Center Storefront, patrolling the neighborhood where he lived. He was a committed community activist, the president of the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council.
Before his career with the Sheriff's office, Cox served as a deputy prosecuting attorney in King, Franklin and Adams counties.

Twice-shot Renton officer slowly creates a new life

Larry Strauss misses many things about police work: the camaraderie, the adrenaline rush of 911 calls and catching bad guys.
But he's worried about being a target.
Few would argue with Strauss, who is believed to be the only police officer in Washington state history to have been shot in two different incidents.
Strauss figured that would be all the gunfire he'd ever see. He agreed when people called him lucky, and even joked about taking his good fortune to Las Vegas.
But on Jan. 8, 2006, Strauss stopped three jaywalkers who had crossed seven lanes of traffic. He asked the first for his name and then turned to another of the jaywalkers, Wilford Armstead, who instead bolted and jumped into a nearby van.
Armstead, who had 27 prior felonies, was wanted on a felony arrest warrant in an assault case.
Strauss later testified that he didn't remember much about what happened next. He saw Armstead reach into his coat as if he were about to pull out a weapon and then everything went black.
Armstead fired at Strauss' head four times, police say. One bullet barely missed his bulletproof vest and burrowed into his neck, leaving him with a broken collarbone, a punctured lung, a broken rib and a collapsed trachea.
In December, Armstead was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Doctors told Strauss that he was only a few centimeters from being killed. Strauss felt like the "unluckiest lucky man" alive.
Once able to run 20 miles a week, Strauss was forced to use a wheelchair immediately after the shooting. Though he gradually was able to hobble, walk and eventually run short distances, Strauss said the shooting left him forgetful.
Although the muscular 50-year-old looks healthy, he said the post-traumatic stress caused by the shooting is forcing him to retire. Strauss has been receiving disability pay from the department and will receive a pension after he retires.
A few weeks ago, Strauss was awarded his second Medal of Valor from the city of Renton for his actions on Jan. 8, 2006. He remains the only person to receive the honor.
Friday, he will be one of six officers to receive the state's law-enforcement Medal of Honor.
