BEIJING - Tens of thousands of Chinese troops stormed Tiananmen Square early today, killing scores of students and workers and wounding hundreds more.
The troops cut a violent swath through the heart of Beijing to get to the central square, rolling through barricades and masses of people on the surrounding streets and crushing a three-week occupation of the square by students calling for democracy.
Hours after daybreak, about 100 troops fired machine guns at a group of people on the main street leading to the square, leaving 30 bodies in the road.
A Beijing Youdian Hospital doctor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, estimated for The Associated Press that at least 500 people died in the clashes. He based the conclusion on reports from 10 hospitals.
"This is vicious behavior," the furious doctor said. "My government has gone insane."
CBS said eight hospitals reported a total 150 dead and 325 wounded. Government-run television said more than 1,000 soldiers were injured.
By 3:30 a.m. today (1:30 p.m. Saturday, Houston time), soldiers and riot police had surrounded Tiananmen, boxing several thousand students and supporters inside. A half-hour later, lights were turned out.
"You have to give up all hope," students said over their loudspeaker at a monument in the square. "You have to give your life to the movement."
Armored personnel carriers first entered the square at 4:30 a.m. Troops moved slowly toward several thousand students clustered around the monument. At the same time, troops shot into crowds on the outskirts of the square.
People fled into alleyways along the square as troops sitting on dozens of armored personnel carriers fired in their direction, hitting some residents as they watched from their windows.
Seven students died during the retreat from the square when they were crushed by a military armored personnel carrier. The vehicle was following them to quicken the pace of the march. One soldier was killed when he was run over by an armored personnel carrier rushing toward the square.
Gunfire echoed around the city. The smell of gunpowder hung in the air, and smoke wafted along Changan Avenue, the Avenue of Eternal Peace. Plainclothes police snipped public telephone lines in a hotel near the square.
NBC News reported that a 33-foot-high replica of the Statue of Liberty, set up by students last week, was torn down.
State radio quoted a commentary by the Liberation Army Daily saying that troops had moved in to protect the people of Beijing. It gave no tally of the death toll.
The radio also quoted a military official as saying: "There has been a rumor that the troops were brought in to suppress the people. Do not believe such rumors spread by a very small number of people."

BEIJING - Soldiers swept through Beijing again today, shooting at unarmed civilians as reports surfaced that military units sent to smash pro-democracy protests were fighting among themselves.
The army, which killed hundreds of people in a crackdown on the protests over the weekend, reportedly shot and killed at least more three civilians today.
One Chinese military source said soldiers were fighting among themselves around the Nanyuan military air base on the southern outskirts of the city. He said the fighting was serious. But residents living near the restricted base said they had seen a steady stream of planes landing and taking off but had not seen or heard fighting.
Artillery shelling also was heard in a far northwestern suburb.
Asked whether soldiers were fighting each other, one Western diplomat said: "It's more than that. There is solid evidence." He would not elaborate.
Chinese sources said the People's Liberation Army is deeply split over the government's May 20 decision to declare martial law and send troops to Beijing. The 38th Army, based around Beijing, reportedly refused to advance on the city.
The source said the 38th was ordered to take over from the 27th Army, which is responsible for the carnage over the weekend. It is not clear whether the army is obeying the order.
Although there have been no accurate tallies, more than 1,000 people are believed to have been killed and thousands are believed to have been injured since soldiers moved to retake Tiananmen Square from student-led protesters.

Lend-Lease (Public Law 77-11) was the name of the program under which the United States of America supplied the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, China, France and other Allied nations with vast amounts of war material between 1941 and 1945 in return for, in the case of Britain, military bases in Newfoundland, Bermuda, and the British West Indies. It began in March 1941, over 18 months after the outbreak of the war in September 1939. It was called An Act Further to Promote the Defense of the United States. This act also ended the pretense of the neutrality of the United States. Hitler recognized this and consequently had his submarines attack US ships such as the SS Robin Moor, an unarmed merchant steamship destroyed by a German U-boat on 21 May, 1941 outside of the war zone.
A total of $50.1 billion (equivalent to nearly $700 billion at 2007 prices) worth of supplies were shipped: $31.4 billion to Britain, $11.3 billion to the Soviet Union, $3.2 billion to France and $1.6 billion to China. Reverse Lend Lease comprised services (like rent on air bases) that went to the U.S. It totaled $7.8 billion, of which $6.8 billion came from the British and the Commonwealth. The terms of the agreement provided that the material was to be used until time for their return or destruction. (Supplies after the termination date were sold to Britain at a discount, for £1.075 billion, using long-term loans from the U.S.) Canada operated a similar program that sent $4.7 billion in supplies to Britain and Soviet Union.
This program is seen as a decisive step away from American non-interventionism since the end of World War I and towards international involvement. The Americans demanded that this rent be settled, and it took until 2006 for the UK government to settle its debt to the USA.

Indian giver is a North American English expression used to describe a person who gives a gift (literal or figurative) and later wants it back, or something equivalent in return.
The term "Indian gift" was first noted in 1765 by Thomas Hutchinson, and "Indian giver" was first cited in John Russell Bartlett's Dictionary of Americanisms (1860) as "Indian giver. When an Indian gives any thing, he expects to receive an equivalent, or to have his gift returned."

I figure Clinton did this because he knew that Microsoft burned me but he didn't know at the time just how bad it was. In essence, they loaned me to Microsoft but they didn't realize Microsoft is effectively a branch of Al Qaeda.

As Bill Clinton makes his way across the nation to promote his memoir "My Life" this week, he's stopping at the usual chain bookstores like Barnes & Noble and venerable booksellers like Cody's Books in Berkeley, Calif., and The Elliott Bay Book Co. in Seattle.
But when the former president arrives here Wednesday to autograph copies of his book, his first scheduled stop will be the discount retail warehouse Costco in Issaquah.

Lt. Colonel T.C. McQueen: They're dead, aren't they?
Commodore Ross: The Five Eight? Don't tell me you've succumbed to those bizarre rumors.
Lt. Colonel T.C. McQueen: In World War 2, prior to D-Day, the British placed false information about the European invasion on the body of a man who just died of pneumonia. They dressed him as a high-ranking officer, and put him in the English Channel via submarine. The Germans discovered the body, and re-deployed several Panzer divisions away from the area. It was a crucial deception that aided the Allied victory. The passengers in the APC are dead.
Commodore Ross: If I knew, I couldn't confirm.
Lt. Colonel T.C. McQueen: While looking into the Second World War I found something else. Operation Naye'i. Naye'i is a Navajo word for "alien gods." During the war we used Native Americans as radio operators. Navajo was the only native language the enemy couldn't crack. I assume any disinformation regarding the location of Operation Roundhammer would be written in code, to make it appear to the enemy to be top secret information.
Commodore Ross: We are not at liberty to discuss this.
Lt. Colonel T.C. McQueen: I have no problem with the mission - if that's what it is. But there is something that bothers me, Commodore. For disinformation to be effective, we would want the Chigs to crack the code. Why would the code be written in a language that even other people on Earth couldn't crack? Unless we knew the enemy was familiar with the language.
