Opportunity Rover Begins Standing Up
NASA's Opportunity rover has untucked its front wheels and latched its suspension system in place - key steps in preparing to drive off its lander and onto Martian soil. Opportunity has also begun using its infrared sensing instrument to detect the composition of rocks and soils from its current, stationary position. This information will help scientists determine which targets of interest should be examined when the rover begins moving. Meanwhile, halfway around Mars, Opportunity's twin, Spirit, continues on the mend from a computer memory problem that struck it a week ago.
With both Spirit and Opportunity now on Mars, researchers with NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission can now begin to search for clues about the history of water on Mars. Because life as we know it requires water to survive, understanding the history of water on Mars can tell scientists a great deal about the potential for past or present life on the Red Planet.
Healthier Spirit Gets Back to Work While Opportunity Prepares to Roll
January 29, 2004
NASA's Spirit rover on Mars has resumed taking pictures as engineers continue work on restoring its health. Meanwhile, Spirit's twin, Opportunity, extended its rear wheels backward to driving position last night as part of preparations to roll off its lander, possibly as early as overnight Saturday-to-Sunday.
Spirit shot and transmitted a picture yesterday to show the position of its robotic arm. "The arm is exactly where we expected," said Jennifer Trosper, mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. It is still extended in the same position as when the rover developed communication and computer problems on Jan. 22. A mineral-identifying instrument called a Moessbauer spectrometer, at the tip of the arm, is positioned at a rock nicknamed Adirondack.
Engineers have been carefully nursing Spirit back toward full operations for the past week. They are sending commands today for the rover to begin making new scientific observations again, starting with panoramic camera images of nearby rocks. Today's commands also tell the rover to send data stored by two instruments since they took readings on Adirondack last week -- the Moessbauer spectrometer and the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer, which identifies the chemical elements in a target.
"We know we still have some engineering work to do, but we think we understand the problem well enough to do science in parallel with that work," Trosper said. Several attempts to get a full trace of data related to the rover's problem have only partially succeeded. The engineers might choose to reformat the rover's flash memory in the next few days.

Mars Rovers Going The Extra Mile
Both of NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers completed their primary missions in April, but their extended missions are continuing to return exciting scientific results. After two months of traveling, Spirit finally reached the Columbia hills late last week. Spirit has already returned fascinating images of curiously eroded rocks that may be new pieces to the puzzle of the region's past.
Meanwhile, Opportunity continues to move into Endurance crater where its first target will be a flat-lying stone dubbed 'Tennessee'. Opportunity will inspect the rock using the spectrometers and microscopic imager on the rover's robotic arm.
Since landing on Mars, NASA's twin Mars Exploration Rovers have been searching for information about the history of water on Mars with great success. Spirit identified signs of repeated exposure to water on a rock inside Gusev Crater. Opportunity discovered evidence that it's own landing site, Meridiani Planum, was once drenched with water. Because life as we know it requires water to survive, understanding the history of water on Mars can tell scientists a great deal about the potential for past or present life on the Red Planet.
The date 1/21/1976 is the day I recognize as when I first landed on the planet Mars. Sort of my first port visit as I made my way out to the comet in the outer solar system. I recognize the day1/23/1976 as the day I left the planet Mars. The 1982 movie “E.T.” premiered precisely 333 weeks after I left the planet Mars.
From 1/21/1976 to 6/11/1982 is: 2333 days, or 333 weeks and 2 days
From 1/23/1976 to 6/11/1982 is: 2331 days, 333 weeks

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 science fiction film directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore, Dee Wallace and Peter Coyote. It tells the story of Elliott (Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends a benign alien dubbed E.T., that is stranded on Earth. He forms a mental, physical and emotional connection with E.T. and helps the alien find its way home, keeping it out of the government's sight.
…
Henry Thomas as Elliott: A lonely 10 year old boy who is picked on by his older brother and friends. Elliott adopts the missing alien.
Robert MacNaughton as Michael: Elliott's older brother. He is also adapting to driving a car, even without a license.
Drew Barrymore as Gertie: Elliott's younger sister, who dresses E.T. up and proudly says she taught him how to talk.
Dee Wallace as Mary: The children's mother, coming off a recent separation from her husband. She is mostly oblivious to the presence of the alien in her household.
Peter Coyote as Keys: A government agent dubbed as such due to jangling his keys at times. He has waited his whole life to meet an alien.
The woman who portrays the mother of “Elliott” was precisely 33 years, 5.9 months, old on 6/11/1982, the day the movie “E.T.” premiered.
Dee Wallace Date of Birth: 14 December 1948
Dee Wallace-Stone (born Deanna Bowers on December 14, 1948, in Kansas City, Kansas)[1] is an U.S. motion picture and television actress. She is remembered for her roles in several popular films. These include the starring role as Elliot's divorced mother in the Steven Spielberg film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), her widest seen role.
I recognize the date 1/22/1976 as my first full day on the surface of the planet Mars. The actor who portrays “Elliott,” who finds the “E.T.” creature in that movie, was born 4573 days after I was. Phoebe Cates was 4573 days old when I spent that first full day on the planet Mars before I left for the Saturn moon Phoebe.
From 3/3/1959 to 9/9/1971 is: 4573 days
From 7/16/1963 to 1/22/1976 is: 4573 days
Henry Jackson Thomas, Jr. (born September 9, 1971) is an American actor and musician. He has appeared in more than 40 films, but is probably best known for his role as Elliott in the 1982 Steven Spielberg film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and his part in the 1984 movie Cloak & Dagger.
I recognize the date 6/7/1976 as my first day on the Saturn moon Phoebe. I left on 6/9/1976 for my 7/2/1976 interception of the comet, somewhere above the elliptic. The actor who portrays the brother of “Elliott” was 3459 days old on my second day on the Saturn moon Phoebe. This might be some kind of reference to the mythological figure Phoebe, whose brother was Apollo.
From 12/19/1966 to 6/8/1976 is: 3459 days
Robert MacNaughton (born December 19, 1966 in New York City) is an American actor, best known for his role as Elliott's brother Michael in Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, for which he won an 1983 Young Artist Award as Best Young Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
The actress who portrays "Elliott's" younger sister was born 333 days before I landed on the planet Mars.
From 2/22/1975 to 1/21/1976 is: 333 days
Drew Blyth Barrymore (born February 22, 1975) is an American actress and film producer. She has her own production company, Flower Films. Barrymore made her screen début in Altered States (1980); her breakout role came two years later in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial as Gertie, which brought the then young actress widespread attention, and she quickly became one of the most recognized child actresses.
Could this be a clue? It doesn't follow the standard because the number of weeks exceeds a year when combined with years. As indicated, he would be 33 years, 59 weeks, old on 11/26/1976, my first day on the Jupiter moon Callisto. But technically, he was 34 years, 6 weeks, 5 days, old on that day. I suspect this may be the kind of clue that you would see as an extra-points question on an exam to demonstrate that you can think beyond established boundaries.
From 10/10/1941 to 10/10/1974 is: 33 years
From 10/10/1974 to 11/26/1976 is: 413 days, or 59 weeks
