Chapter 5

And then Larry had been transfixed by the sound of his own voice coming out of the Technics speakers:

I know I didn’t say I was comin down,

I know you didn’t know I was here in town,

But bay-yay-yaby you can tell me if anyone can,

Baby, can you dig your man?

He’s a righteous man,

Tell me baby, can you dig your man?

I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustang_(military_officer)

Mustang (military officer)

A Mustang is United States Military slang for a commissioned officer who began his or her career as an enlisted service member. Mustangs are older and more experienced than their peers-in-grade who earned their commissions from one of the service academies (such as the United States Military Academy, United States Air Force Academy, or United States Naval Academy), Officer Candidate School, or the Reserve Officer Training Corps. During the Vietnam War, however, when some Army warrant officer pilots were offered a direct commission to 2nd or 1st Lieutenant, they were usually younger than 25 at the time of commission.

A United States Navy mustang can be a Chief Warrant Officer, a Limited Duty Officer, a Staff Officer, a Restricted Line Officer or an Unrestricted Line Officer, depending on their particular situation.

The original definition of a mustang was a military officer who had earned a battlefield commission; they were especially prevalent during World War II and the Korean War. Such notables include Audie Murphy (World War II) and David Hackworth (Korean War).

A mustang is currently defined[citation needed] by a continuity in military service from enlisted to officer (i.e., no break in military service). Being a slang term, there is no precise definition or set of criteria to determine which officers can properly be called a "mustang"; however, generally accepted as mustangs are those who earned a Good Conduct Medal

A Yale soccer coach caught in a sting: How the FBI broke open the sweeping college admission scandal

USA TODAY

Joey Garrison

March 14, 2019

Inside a Boston hotel room April 12, 2018, Yale Women's Soccer Coach Rudy Meredith allegedly met with a father from California who was ready to pay to get his daughter into the Ivy League school.

A deal was reached, federal prosecutors said.

Meredith, 51, allegedly agreed to designate the young woman, identified in court documents as "Applicant 2," as a Yale soccer player in exchange for $450,000. Prosecutors said he accepted an initial payment of $2,000 in cash at the hotel and later received $4,000 through a wire transfer into a Connecticut bank account.

What Meredith, who resigned as the team's coach in November after 24 years, did not know was that the FBI was secretly recording the meeting.

The father was a tipster to the Justice Department wearing a wire, according to media reports.

According to the Justice Department, the April 18 wire payment was from a Boston bank account under the control of FBI agents as well.

The FBI had its eyes on Meredith after federal authorities were tipped to him while pursuing a separate securities fraud case, according to The Wall Street Journal and The Boston Globe, which shed light on how the scheme unraveled.

The scam was discovered by accident. A financial executive wanting leniency in the securities case told federal authorities that Meredith sought a bribe to get his daughter into Yale, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing "people familiar with the investigation."

After the Boston sting operation, Meredith cooperated with federal authorities, the report said, making him the first – and key – domino in the largest college admissions scandal in U.S. history.

Meredith is one of 50 people, including 33 affluent parents and nine collegiate athletic coaches, charged with crimes in the elaborate cheating and bribery conspiracy. The parent who met with Meredith in the Boston hotel room is not among those charged. Meredith was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and honest services wire fraud and a second count of honest services wire fraud.

The FBI office in Boston did not immediately return a message from USA TODAY on how the FBI learned of the wider college admissions scheme. At a news conference Tuesday, officials said only that FBI investigators found evidence of a “large-scale elaborate fraud” while working an unrelated undercover case.

The multi-state federal investigation, launched less than a year ago, is still underway. More coaches and parents could be charged.

Prosecutors said rich and powerful parents paid "enormous sums" to coaches at elite colleges and universities in exchange for them pretending their children were competitive athletes as a way to admit them into the schools. Parents allegedly made more than $25 million in payments since 2011 to William "Rick" Singer of Newport Beach, California, who is accused of being the scheme's ringleader. He allegedly operated a sham nonprofit group and worked with coaches to facilitate the financial transactions and the applicants' entry into the schools.

The Justice Department said Meredith started working with Singer in 2015.

Months before the Boston meeting, federal prosecutors said, Singer sent Meredith a check of $400,000 around Jan. 1, 2018, for the coach's role in getting a different woman admitted to Yale.

Prosecutors said Meredith designated the student, identified in court documents as "Applicant 1," as a recruit for the soccer team even though he knew she didn't play competitive soccer.

In November 2017, Singer was introduced to the applicant's family through a Los Angeles-based financial adviser, prosecutors said. The applicant's father allegedly told Singer in an email that he wanted to make a "donation" for his daughter's "application."

Prosecutors said Singer sent the daughter's resume and personal statement, which contained links to the applicant's art portfolio, to Meredith. Singer allegedly told Meredith he would change the materials from art to soccer.

On Nov. 13, prosecutors said, Singer sent Meredith an "athletic profile" that fabricated the applicant's soccer credentials, including falsely describing her as a co-captain of a prominent soccer club in Southern California. Meredith allegedly used that profile to classify her as a women's soccer player.

In all, according to prosecutors, relatives of Applicant 1 paid Singer $1.2 million, including $900,000 into a charitable account Singer set up through his college counseling organization called The Key.

As Yale's women's soccer team coach, Meredith won Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors three times and led the team to the NCAA College Cup in 2002, 2004 and 2005.

He did not refer to the federal investigation publicly when he resigned in November, calling it "time to explore new possibilities and begin a different chapter in my life."

"I will always bleed Yale blue and wish everyone in the athletics department future success," he said.

In addition to the charges, federal prosecutors seek to recover more than $557,000 from Meredith in forfeiture and a $308,000 cashier's check provided to the FBI on May, 21, 2018.

Meredith's initial appearance in federal court is set for March 28 in Boston.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: August 9, 2006

My hunch is that I was taken captive again by natives, where they threw me in to fight a lion. There is this memory I have been thinking about for a while. It was when i was a kid, maybe 7 years old. Mom was married to James Nevell and we lived in De Queen. He had not gone back into the Marines at that time or he had just gotten out. I think it was the former. Anyway, one day, I was rummaging through our storage shed and I found his U.S. Marines-issued saber. Or I found a machete that day. I remember both happening. Anyway, I was playing with the machete or the saber out in the yard and I was chopping away at any threatening blades of grass or tree limbs. At one point, I started to chop a tree limb that was laying on the ground in front of me. After I swung the blade over my head to strike down on the limb, mom's new puppy ran between my legs and run under the blade. I struck the little bastard square on its backbone, but remarkably, I didn't even break the skin. It ran off yelping but wasn't even bleeding. I was very scared because I thought I had just killed it, but it was all right. As I was just writing that memory, I felt a greater association to it and that Costner movie I just wrote about. When I started writing about hitting that dog, I was thinking about something with lions. As in, a lion rushed at me, I leapt into the air, did a something like a somersault, but not the backflip, rather the other....what do you call that? It wouldn't be a backflip....but something like a side-flip....I'll have to look that up. Anyway, as I flipped over the top of the lion, I either punched its backbone or I had some kind of weapon I used to break its back. I have no idea if this is memory or imagination but I think of this many times. I just wish I knew.

I always suspected something like this was the case. The new issue of Texas Monthly delves into the long neglected story of George W. The Texas Monthly lays out the surprisingly complicated mechanizations that led to the Junior Bush landing this plumb spot in the T.A.N.G.

That George W. got special treatment at a time when draftees were likely to end up slogging through the jungles of Viet Nam shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to anyone who knows how America routinely gives special treatment to the offspring of the 1%.

David Saint-Jacques Becomes the First Canadian Astronaut to “Catch” a Cargo Ship

Marc Boucher May 8, 2019

This past Monday David Saint-Jacques added another accomplishment to his resume while on-orbit for his six month stay on the International Space Station (ISS) by performing a “cosmic catch”.

The “cosmic catch” as the Canadian Space Agency refers to it, is the capture and berthing of autonomous resupply cargo spacecraft using the space station’s Canadarm as they arrive. In this case, a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. This was the first time a Canadian astronaut on the ISS performed the “cosmic catch”.

After the spacecraft was berthed the crew will unload the cargo while Canada’s Dextre robotic handyman will remove cargo from the Dragon’s “trunk” and stow the cargo in its appropriate place outside on the station.

According to NASA “just two days following its nighttime launch from the Florida coast, SpaceX’s Dragon cargo spacecraft was captured and installed on the Earth-facing side of the International Space Station’s Harmony module at 9:32 a.m. EDT” Monday.

NASA also stated that with the arrive of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft “the number of spaceships docked at the space station to six. Other vehicles visiting include Russia’s Progress 71 and 72 resupply ships and the Soyuz MS-11 and MS-12 crew ships, as well as Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus space freighter.”

The Dragon cargo spacecraft was carrying 2,500 kilograms of research, crew supplies and hardware.

NASA outlined some of the research onboard the resupply ship;

“Scientists are using a new technology called tissue chips, which could help predict the effectiveness of potential medicines in humans. Fluid that mimics blood can be passed through the chip to simulate blood flow, and can include drugs or toxins. In microgravity, changes occur in human health and human cells that resemble accelerated aging and disease processes. This investigation allows scientists to make observations over the course of a few weeks in microgravity rather than the months it would take in a laboratory on Earth.”

“The Hermes facility allows scientists to study the dusty, fragmented debris covering asteroids and moons, called regolith. Once installed by astronauts on the space station, scientists will be able to take over the experiment from Earth to study how regolith particles behave in response to long-duration exposure to microgravity, including changes to pressure, temperate and shocks from impacts and other forces. The investigations will provide insight into the formation and behavior of asteroids, comets, impact dynamics and planetary evolution.”

“These are just a few of the hundreds of investigations that will help us learn how to keep astronauts healthy during long-duration space travel and demonstrate technologies for future human and robotic exploration beyond low-Earth orbit to the Moon and Mars. Space station research also provides opportunities for other U.S. government agencies, private industry, and academic and research institutions to conduct microgravity research that leads to new technologies, medical treatments, and products that improve life on Earth.”

Warren Weaver

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Warren Weaver (July 17, 1894 – November 24, 1978) was an American scientist, mathematician, and science administrator. He is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of machine translation, and as an important figure in creating support for science in the United States.

The "Translation" memorandum

Weaver had first mentioned the possibility of using digital computers to translate documents between natural human languages in March 1947 in a letter to the cyberneticist Norbert Wiener. In the following two years, he had been urged by his colleagues at the Rockefeller Foundation to elaborate on his ideas. The result was a memorandum, entitled simply "Translation", which he wrote in July 1949 at Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Said to be probably the single most influential publication in the early days of machine translation, it formulated goals and methods before most people had any idea of what computers might be capable of, and was the direct stimulus for the beginnings of research first in the United States and then later, indirectly, throughout the world. The impact of Weaver's memorandum is attributable not only to his widely recognized expertise in mathematics and computing, but also, and perhaps even more, to the influence he enjoyed with major policy-makers in U.S. government agencies.

Weaver's memorandum was designed to suggest more fruitful methods than any simplistic word-for-word approach, which had grave limitations. He put forward four proposals. The first was that the problem of multiple meanings might be tackled by the examination of immediate context. For example, the English word fast has at least two meanings which we can paraphrase as rapid or motionless. If we wish to translate an English text, it is likely that these two senses of fast correspond to different words in the target language, and in order to translate the word correctly one needs to know which sense is intended. Weaver proposed that this problem could be solved by looking at the words that occur in the vicinity of the word to be translated, and he conjectured that the number of context words that would be required is fairly small.

MEDIA ADVISORY M19-040

NASA Invites Media to Orion Abort Test Before Moon Missions with Crew

Media accreditation is open for an uncrewed flight test of the launch abort system of NASA’s Orion spacecraft on Tuesday, July 2. This test, Ascent Abort-2, will demonstrate the abort system can activate, steer the spacecraft, and carry astronauts to a safe distance if an emergency arises during Orion’s climb to orbit.

A 22,000-pound test version of the Orion spacecraft is scheduled to launch from Space Launch Complex 46 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) in Florida on a rocket provided by Northrop Grumman.

Maj. Jalbert: I don't know. But right now, we have a shot at containing this.

Gen. Starkey: Is he alive or dead?

Maj. Jalbert: He's dead.

Gen. Starkey: Oh my God. Denninger says that this stuff has a communicability level of 99.4%! You know what that means? Any chance we had at containing by the book went out the window when Campion stopped to buy gas or his first take-out hamburger!

Maj. Jalbert: We can't think that way, General.

Gen. Starkey: Well... you're right, I guess not. What about the rest of his family? His wife and baby daughter?

Maj. Jalbert: They're dead, sir. Contact with townspeople was minimal.

Gen. Starkey: That doesn't matter. We've got to shut that town down, lock it up, dig a moat around it.

Maj. Jalbert: That operation is already on the launching pad, sir.

Gen. Starkey: Good. What kind of cover did you come up with?

PRISONER

CHAPTER 1

THE DOOR

The gunslinger began to walk.

He walked for three hours. He fell twice, and the second time he did not believe he would be able to get up again. Then a wave came toward him, close enough to make him remember his guns, and he was up before he knew it, standing on legs that quivered like stilts.

He thought he had managed about four miles in those three hours. Now the sun was growing hot, but not hot enough to explain the way his head pounded or the sweat pouring down his face; nor was the breeze from the sea strong enough to explain the sudden fits of shuddering which sometimes gripped him, making his body lump into gooseflesh and his teeth chatter.

Fever, gunslinger, the man in black tittered. What's left inside you has been touched afire.

The red lines of infection were more pronounced now; they had marched upward from his right wrist halfway to his elbow.

He made another mile and drained his waterbag dry. He tied it around his waist with the other. The landscape was monotonous and unpleasing. The sea to his right, the mountains to his left, the gray, shell-littered sand under the feet of his cut-down boots. The waves came and went. He looked for the lobstrosities and saw none. He walked out of nowhere toward nowhere, a man from another time who, it seemed, had reached a point of pointless ending.

Shortly before noon he fell again and knew he could not get up. This was the place, then. Here. This was the end, after all.

On his hands and knees, he raised his head like a groggy fighter … and some distance ahead, perhaps a mile, perhaps three (it was difficult to judge distances along the unchanging reach of the strand with the fever working inside him, making his eyeballs pulse in and out), he saw something new. Something which stood upright on the beach.

What was it?

(three)

Didn't matter.

(three is the number of your fate)

The gunslinger managed to get to his feet again. He croaked something, some plea which only the circling sea-birds heard (and how happy they would be to gobble my eyes from my head, he thought, how happy to have such a tasty bit!), and walked on, weaving more seriously now, leaving tracks behind him that were weird loops and swoops.

He kept his eyes on whatever it was that stood on the strand ahead. When his hair fell in his eyes he brushed it aside. It seemed to grow no closer. The sun reached the roof of the sky, where it seemed to remain far too long. Roland imagined he was in the desert again, somewhere between the last out-lander's hut

(the musical fruit the more you eat the more you toot)

and the way-station where the boy (your Isaac) had awaited his coming.

His knees buckled, straightened, buckled, straightened again. When his hair fell in his eyes once more he did not bother to push it back; did not have the strength to push it back. He looked at the object, which now cast a narrow shadow back toward the upland, and kept walking.

He could make it out now, fever or no fever.

It was a door.

Less than a quarter of a mile from it, Roland's knees buckled again and this time he could not stiffen their hinges. He fell, his right hand dragged across gritty sand and shells, the stumps of his fingers screamed as fresh scabs were scored away. The stumps began to bleed again.

So he crawled. Crawled with the steady rush, roar, and retreat of the Western Sea in his ears. He used his elbows and his knees, digging grooves in the sand above the twist of dirty green kelp which marked the high-tide line. He supposed the wind was still blowing - it must be, for the chills continued to whip through his body - but the only wind he could hear was the harsh gale which gusted in and out of his own lungs.

The door grew closer.

Closer.

At last, around three o'clock of that long delirious day, with his shadow beginning to grow long on his left, he reached it. He sat back on his haunches and regarded it wearily.

It stood six and a half feet high and appeared to be made of solid ironwood, although the nearest ironwood tree must grow seven hundred miles or more from here. The doorknob looked as if it were made of gold, and it was filigreed with a design which the gunslinger finally recognized: it was the grinning face of the baboon.

There was no keyhole in the knob, above it, or below it.

The door had hinges, but they were fastened to nothing - or so it seems, the gunslinger thought. This is a mystery, a most marvellous mystery, but does it really matter? You are dying. Your own mystery - the only one that really matters to any man or woman in the end - approaches.

All the same, it did seem to matter.

This door. This door where no door should be. It simply stood there on the gray strand twenty feet above the high tide line, seemingly as eternal as the sea itself, now casting the slanted shadow of its thickness toward the east as the sun westered.

Written upon it in black letters two-thirds of the way up, written in the high speech, were two words:

THE PRISONER

A demon has infested him. The name of the demon is HEROIN.

The gunslinger could hear a low droning noise. At first he thought it must be the wind or a sound in his own feverish head, but he became more and more convinced that the sound was the sound of motors ... and that it was coming from behind the door.

Open it then. It's not locked. You know it's not locked.

Instead he tottered gracelessly to his feet and walked above the door and around to the other side.

There was no other side.

Only the dark gray strand, stretching back and back. Only the waves, the shells, the high-tide line, the marks of his own approach - bootprints and holes that had been made by his elbows. He looked again and his eyes widened a little. The door wasn't here, but its shadow was.

(Closing Narration)

Narrator: Mr. Franklin Gibbs, visitor to Las Vegas, who lost his money, his reason, and finally his life to an inanimate metal machine variously described as a one-armed bandit, a slot machine or, in Mr. Franklin Gibbs's words, a monster with a will all its own. XLII President of the United States: 1993 - 2001

Remarks on Bosnia and an Exchange With Reporters in Newport News, Virginia

April 17, 1994

The President. Ladies and gentlemen, I've received a number of reports today on the situation in Bosnia. I've also been in touch today with President Yeltsin.

We don't have any definitive reports on the status of Gorazde, but I can tell you that there has been some progress in the negotiations between the United Nations and the Serbs. Mr. Akashi has been working on it, Ambassador Redman and Mr. Churkin, and they may have something to announce shortly.

I also—I don't know that this has been made public or not, but the Serbs released 16 Canadian soldiers, and we're working on the release of the other UNPROFOR forces today. So the situation is still tense around Gorazde. There is still some degree of uncertainty there, but there has been, as of my latest report, which was just about 10 minutes ago, some progress in the negotiations between the U.N. and the Serbs on getting back to the negotiations and reducing the tensions.

Q. What's the U.S. role been?

I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too. I have these thoughts too that I was captured by enemy forces at some point and tortured while in captivity.

The Stand - complete edition

Stephen King

(from internet transcript)

Chapter 4

It was an hour past nightfall.

Starkey sat alone at a long table, sifting through sheets of yellow flimsy. Their contents dismayed him. He had been serving his country for thirty-six years, beginning as a scared West Point plebe. He had won medals. He had spoken with Presidents, had offered them advice, and on occasion his advice had been taken. He had been through dark moments before, plenty of them, but this…

He was scared, so deeply scared he hardly dared admit it to himself. It was the kind of fear that could drive you mad.

The first monitor showed only a digital clock. Until June 13, all the numbers on that clock had been green. Now they had turned bright red.
