How to Avoid Getting Shot by a Police Officer
Whether or not you have done something wrong, there is no reason to be shot by a police officer -- that is, unless you give them one. Here are some ways to avoid personal harm in situations with a police officer that has their gun drawn.
Steps
Stop. Do not move unless directed by the officer. At this point, any movement you make that is unexpected is one step closer to getting shot.
Keep your hands in clear view. If the police officer cannot see your hands, he or she will assume you are going for a weapon. This can lead to you getting shot.
Follow all directions. The officer will tell you exactly what he or she wants you to do. That typically includes putting your hands on the back of your head, walking backwards toward the sound of their voice, or lying down on the ground. Do it. At this point you've either already broken the law and don't need to make it worse on yourself, or you are the victim of a misunderstanding and need to cooperate to help prove your innocence.
Do not talk. Chances are good that there is not much you can say to help the situation. If the officer has drawn their weapon, you will almost certainly be arrested, and there is not much you can say to stop that from happening. If they've drawn their weapon, they're certain it's needed. There will be plenty of time to talk once you are in cuffs and no longer considered a threat. You may wish to consider answering questions posed by the police officer. However, you have the right to refuse to do so. It is almost always in your best interest to remain silent. Police officers are not allowed to continue questioning you if you request an attorney. (US only)
Go slowly. Sudden movements make officers nervous, and nervous officers are more likely to whip out their guns.
Don't brandish a weapon. If you have got a gun or knife in your pocket or waistband, leave it alone. Don't draw it, even to surrender it. The officer would much rather find it on his or her own than have you whip it out and wave it around. If you would prefer to surrender the weapon, clearly speak words to the effect of "I would like to turn over my weapon." before drawing it.
Let yourself be handcuffed. Yes, it may be uncomfortable, but retaliation or struggling is only going to result in serious injury. In many cities, it is police protocol to place handcuffs on even the most cooperative of suspects.

NASA's Mars Global Surveyor sped toward the Red Planet on Thursday, following a near flawless liftoff. The $235 million mission initiates a decade-long, multinational bid to expand the search for life on the neighboring planet with a succession of robotic probes.
The small probe, laden with cameras and instruments, soared into sunny Florida skies atop a slender Delta II rocket, launched from the state's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 11 a.m. CST.
The one-ton spacecraft is to reach Mars on Sept. 12, 1997, maneuvering into a looping polar orbit. In early 1998, it will begin its 687-day primary mission of extensively photographing almost all of the planet's desert like terrain, monitoring its weather and analyzing the mineral content of its most distinctive geological features.
It was equipped to function as a communications satellite for several years, relaying commands and signals back and forth between Earth and the parade of new spacecraft that the United States, Russia and Japan plan to aim at Mars over the next decade.
Within an hour of launching, the Delta's third stage fell away high above the Indian Ocean, supplying enough propulsion for the circuitous, 435-million mile journey.

Intrigued by fresh evidence of possible life on Mars, scientists have launched an unmanned spacecraft as the first step in a 10-year campaign to explore the arid plains, valleys and polar ice caps of the red planet.
The ultimate goal of these robotic explorers is to solve a mystery that has long fired the human imagination: Have there ever been Martians in any form, however rudimentary, and do they still exist?
Toward that end the 1-ton Mars Global Surveyor blasted off last week from Cape Canaveral, Fla. It won't reach its destination, an orbit of Mars, until September.
When it gets there, the global surveyor's cameras and other remote-sensing instruments won't supply any quick answers to the life-on-Mars question. Its mission is to study the planet's atmosphere and climatic history and map its entire surface, perhaps identifying promising areas for the life search.
"After a hiatus of 20 years, America returns to Mars," Daniel Goldin, the administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, said of these opening salvos in the renewed attack on the Martian mysteries.

The President. Thank you all, and welcome to the White House. I'm delighted we could have a few moments together today, and I'm anxious to get to your questions. But first I thought I'd begin by giving you a little report on two stories that have been coming over the wires. They're what those of you in the newsroom would call developing stories that will be, I hope, a source of increasing focus and interest.
And with that said, let's make it a dialog instead of a monolog. All right?
Iran Arms and Contra Aid Controversy
Q. Mr. President, Bill Sharp from WCSC in Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. President, to those people who might say your Presidency and you have been mortally wounded by the Iran-contra affair, how would you answer those people?
The President. Well, sometimes before I've used a line from an old Scottish ballad to the effect that, yes, I'd been wounded-"I'll lie me down and rest a bit, and then I'll fight again."

Incidentally, on that short answer that I gave you on mortally wounded—I have to say that I get around quite a bit in the country, and the audiences range from blue-collar workers in a factory, as they did just a few days ago, to students and their families at a graduation ceremony. And I haven't seen any evidences that I've been mortally wounded, nor do the people seem to be unhappy about what we've been doing here.

Thank you all very much. And Secretary Weinberger, Chairman Olch, Dean Sanford, members of the graduating class, and ladies and gentlemen, I must tell you before I start how relieved I was when Dean Sanford told me that I was going to walk on after the procession. I thought that I was going to come in with the dean, and with his reputation, I'd been afraid that the good news was that we might perch on the backstage rafters and rappel in— [laughter] —and the bad news, that we'd jump from 10,000 feet. [Laughter] But it's a pleasure to be here to welcome you the graduates of this the West Point and Annapolis and Colorado Springs for physicians into your new profession as military and Public Health Service doctors.
When I hear about the can-do spirit of America's doctors in uniform, it reminds me of a story about a group of marines. I hope those of you in the other services will forgive me for telling this, but the get-it-done spirit applies to all of America's physicians in uniform. These marines had been sent to the Army airborne school for training. And came the day for the first jump, the training officer told them that the planes would come in at 1,500 feet, they would jump from the plane, hit the ground, and move south. The marines seemed a little disturbed by this, and they went into a huddle. Then one of them as a spokesman for the group went to the officer and asked couldn't the plane come in at 500 feet instead of 1,500? And the officer explained that if they took the plane in too low, it wouldn't give them time for the parachutes to open. And he said, "Oh, you mean we're wearing parachutes?" [Laughter]
A quarter century ago, Douglas MacArthur gave his farewell address to the Long Gray Line, the cadets of West Point. He stood in the vast hall of the academy, below the balcony they call the poop deck, and spoke about the soul, not just of the Army but of all the services that you now enter. "The Long Gray Line," he said, "has never failed us. Were you to do so, a million ghosts in olive drab, in brown khaki, in blue and gray would rise from their white crosses thundering those magic words: duty, honor, country."
Duty, honor, country—the motto of West Point. And like the men and women of West Point and all of our military institutions, our physicians in uniform have never failed us. They've been ready when called; ready for hardship and sacrifice, for adventure and exploration; ready to extend the hand of compassion and healing care; ready, if called, to give the last full measure of their devotion. And you now join that company. You now enter the service of your country in one of the world's most honored professions: that of physician.

My fellow Americans:
There's a memorable bit of dialog between Claude Rains and Humphrey Bogart in the movie "Casablanca." Rains, playing the Vichy French police inspector, asked Bogart why he came to Casablanca; and Bogart says it was for "the waters." "But this is the desert," replies Rains, "there are no waters here." And Bogart, unflappable as ever, responds, "I was misinformed."
Now, I'd like to turn for a moment to events this past week in the Persian Gulf. The actions that our forces took in the Gulf were a measured response to Iran's resumption of mine-laying and continued aggression against nonbelligerents.
I am extremely proud of the courage and resourcefulness of our military personnel in the Persian Gulf. Their performance under very difficult circumstances has been superb. We're also very pleased with the role that the European allies are playing in a cooperative effort to counter the Iranian mining threat and to help protect freedom of navigation. Such cooperative efforts, supported by our Gulf Arab friends, offer the best means of deterring Iran and enhancing Gulf security. Working together, we can also put new life into the U.N. Security Council's efforts to end the increasingly bloody, inhumane Iran-Iraq war and remove the root cause of tensions in the Gulf. Our role in this war is neutral, and we do not seek to confront Iran. However, its leaders must understand that continued military and terrorist attacks against nonbelligerents and refusal to negotiate an end to the war will be very costly to Iran and its people.

Situation in the Middle East/U.S.S. Cole
The President. I have just been meeting with my national security team on today's tragic events in the Middle East, and I would like to make a brief statement.
First, as you know, an explosion claimed the lives of at least four sailors on one of our naval vessels, the U.S.S. Cole, this morning. Many were injured; a number are still missing. They were simply doing their duty. The ship was refueling in a port in Yemen while en route to the Persian Gulf. We're rushing medical assistance to the scene, and our prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones or are still awaiting news.
If, as it now appears, this was an act of terrorism, it was a despicable and cowardly act. We will find out who was responsible and hold them accountable.

Because of his organizational talents and ideological reliability, he was charged by Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich with the task of facilitating and managing the logistics of mass deportation of Jews to ghettos and extermination camps in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe.
After the war, he travelled to Argentina using a fraudulently obtained laissez-passer issued by the International Red Cross and lived there under a false identity working for Mercedes-Benz until 1960. He was captured by Israeli Mossad operatives in Argentina and tried in an Israeli court on 15 criminal charges, including crimes against humanity and war crimes. He was convicted and hanged in 1962.

Navy Seeks Answers In Blue Angels Crash -- 2 Jet Pilots Killed In Training

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. - Investigators are examining the wreckage of a Navy Blue Angels jet to determine why its landing approach on a clear day ended in a stand of pines, killing its two crewmen.
The F/A-18 Hornet crashed during a training flight yesterday on a farm a few miles north of Moody Air Force Base in southern Georgia.
The precision flying team canceled a performance at Moody this weekend and planned to return today to its home base in Pensacola, Fla.
"The team is obviously in mourning right now," Cmdr. Jack Penn, a Navy spokesman said today. Penn said two Naval investigators arrived at Moody late yesterday and were examining the wreckage today.
Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said the Navy would search aggressively for any procedural or maintenance problems that could have caused the crash.
"This is its premier flying team, a team that performs to the amazement and pleasure of crowds all over the United States," Bacon said. "You can be sure the Navy will do whatever it can to make sure that this team is at the very top of its ability to fly."
Killed in the crash were Lt. Commander Kieron O'Connor, 35, of Burtonsville, Md., and Lt. Kevin Colling, 32, of Castle Rock, Colo., said their flight leader, Cmdr. Patrick Driscoll.
In August, while the Blue Angels were in Seattle, O'Connor and squadron mate Lt. Cmdr. Doug Verissimo participated in a mock dog fight against the creator of a Microsoft flight-simulation game at the company's Redmond headquarters.
O'Connor had been with the 14-member team since last November, while Colling had joined recently and was being trained, Driscoll said. "(These pilots) are two of the best naval aviators I know. This is a tragic loss to the families, to the Blue Angels and the U.S. Navy," Driscoll said.
At the time of the crash, the jets were not in formation and were circling to practice arrival procedures as the pilots familiarized themselves with the terrain, Driscoll said. The jet that crashed was near another, but not as close as the aircraft usually fly during performances, he said.

And at the same time that I mention this, there is also a gap that exists by some in this industry and our military. And it's gap that is not unique to this industry but I think is somewhat indicative of that in our country. There is a sense that in many places beyond this campus, from Sunnyvale to Silicon Valley to Silicon Alley, that there are some in the digital world who dismiss the importance of national security, that some soldiers in the high-tech revolution don't fully appreciate or understand the soldiers in camouflage, that tanks and guns are somehow rusty relics of the past and may be obsolete in the new information-based world that is going to carry us into the future.
I think of this because there is one Silicon Valley executive who said about as much in an interview that he granted to the New York Times columnist Tom Friedman. He said that: "We don't even care about Washington." He said: "Money is extracted from Silicon Valley and then wasted by Washington. And why would I care about wealth destroyers?"
I am not even going to bother turning around to see if there is any kind of receptivity behind my shoulder.

One man who sat where you do now and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1968 is another member of our administration-Assistant Secretary of Defense James Webb, the most decorated member of his class. But yesterday, the lead solo pilot for the Navy's crack formation-flying squadron laughed off those problems.

Navy Seeks Answers In Blue Angels Crash -- 2 Jet Pilots Killed In Training

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. - Investigators are examining the wreckage of a Navy Blue Angels jet to determine why its landing approach on a clear day ended in a stand of pines, killing its two crewmen.
The F/A-18 Hornet crashed during a training flight yesterday on a farm a few miles north of Moody Air Force Base in southern Georgia.
The precision flying team canceled a performance at Moody this weekend and planned to return today to its home base in Pensacola, Fla.
"The team is obviously in mourning right now," Cmdr. Jack Penn, a Navy spokesman said today. Penn said two Naval investigators arrived at Moody late yesterday and were examining the wreckage today.
Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said the Navy would search aggressively for any procedural or maintenance problems that could have caused the crash.
"This is its premier flying team, a team that performs to the amazement and pleasure of crowds all over the United States," Bacon said. "You can be sure the Navy will do whatever it can to make sure that this team is at the very top of its ability to fly."
Killed in the crash were Lt. Commander Kieron O'Connor, 35, of Burtonsville, Md., and Lt. Kevin Colling, 32, of Castle Rock, Colo., said their flight leader, Cmdr. Patrick Driscoll.
In August, while the Blue Angels were in Seattle, O'Connor and squadron mate Lt. Cmdr. Doug Verissimo participated in a mock dog fight against the creator of a Microsoft flight-simulation game at the company's Redmond headquarters.
O'Connor had been with the 14-member team since last November, while Colling had joined recently and was being trained, Driscoll said. "(These pilots) are two of the best naval aviators I know. This is a tragic loss to the families, to the Blue Angels and the U.S. Navy," Driscoll said.
At the time of the crash, the jets were not in formation and were circling to practice arrival procedures as the pilots familiarized themselves with the terrain, Driscoll said. The jet that crashed was near another, but not as close as the aircraft usually fly during performances, he said.

But Jed learns that the reason Beau had come to California was to enlist in the army. At the end, he doesn’t marry Elly May, but heads to the recruiting office to join the army.

Reagan took a screen test in 1937 that led to a seven-year contract with Warner Brothers studios. His first screen credit was the starring role in the 1937 movie Love Is on the Air, and by the end of 1939 he had already appeared in 19 films.
Military service
After completing fourteen home-study Army Extension Courses, Reagan enlisted in the Army Enlisted Reserve on April 29, 1937, as a private assigned to Troop B, 322nd Cavalry at Des Moines, Iowa. He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on May 25, 1937, and on June 18 was assigned to the 323rd Cavalry.
Reagan was ordered to active duty for the first time on April 18, 1942. Due to his nearsightedness, he was classified for limited service only, which excluded him from serving overseas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California, as a liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office. Upon the approval of the Army Air Force (AAF), he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF on May 15, 1942, and was assigned to AAF Public Relations and subsequently to the 1st Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, California. On January 14, 1943 he was promoted to First Lieutenant and was sent to the Provisional Task Force Show Unit of This Is The Army at Burbank, California. He returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit after completing this duty and was promoted to Captain on July 22, 1943.
By the end of the war, his units had produced some 400 training films for the AAF.
SAG president and television
Reagan was first elected to the Board of Directors of the Screen Actors Guild in 1941, serving as an alternate. Following World War II, he resumed service and became 3rd Vice president in 1946. The adoption of conflict-of-interest bylaws in 1947 led the SAG president and six board members to resign; Reagan was nominated in a special election for the position of president and subsequently elected. He would subsequently be chosen by the membership to seven additional one-year terms, from 1947 to 1952 and in 1959. Reagan led SAG through eventful years that were marked by labor-management disputes, the Taft-Hartley Act, House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) hearings and the Hollywood blacklist era.

After World War II, which saw the introduction of U.S. "5-star" officers who outranked Washington, both Congress and the President revisited the issue of Washington's rank. To maintain George Washington's proper position as the first Commanding General of the United States Army, he was appointed, posthumously, to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States by congressional joint resolution Public Law 94-479 January 19, 1976, approved by President Gerald R. Ford on October 11, 1976. The law established the grade as having "rank and precedence over all other grades of the Army, past or present", clearly making it superior to General of the Army. The Department of the Army Order 31-3, issued on March 13, 1978 had an effective appointment date of July 4, 1976. The rank ensures that no United States military officer outranks George Washington.
