The 1993 World Trade Center bombing occurred on February 26, 1993, when a car bomb was detonated below Tower One of the World Trade Center in New York City. The 1,500 lb (680 kg) urea nitrate-hydrogen gas enhanced device was intended to knock the North Tower (Tower One) into the South Tower (Tower Two), bringing both towers down and killing thousands of people. It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

Farmworkers, artists sue Gates company

SAN FRANCISCO--Tourists taking a walking tour in San Francisco yesterday couldn't miss the subject of a legal dispute between the United Farm Workers and a major dealer in art reproductions: murals covering the sides of buildings in the city's Mission District.
A suit filed Thursday in federal court by several artists and UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta claims Corbis is selling photos of their works without permission.
The UFW is concerned that its slogan "Si Se Puede" ("It can be done"), the union's trademark black eagle logo and images of Huerta are being misappropriated by Corbis, a company founded and owned by Microsoft's Bill Gates.

M's win bid to woo Suzuki

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - In the Mariners' grand plan, No. 51 will live again next season and it will be emblazoned with the name that in Japan is instantaneously recognizable.

As with Elvis and Tiger, no last name is necessary, and in fact Ichiro Suzuki, the biggest celebrity in Japanese baseball, officially dropped his several years ago.
The Mariners yesterday were awarded the negotiating rights to Suzuki, a seven-time Pacific League batting champion who is trying to become the first Japanese position player in the major leagues. In blind bidding among several major-league teams, the Mariners submitted the highest figure - a staggering $13.125 million (1.4 billion yen) that will go to the Orix BlueWave, Suzuki's team in Kobe, if the Mariners sign him within 30 days.
"This is a great player, one of the best players in the world," Mariner chairman Howard Lincoln said. "He's an extraordinary defensive player with a strong arm, and we think he could be a great leadoff hitter. His type of baseball and Safeco Field go hand in glove."
"The bid is merely an opportunity to get on the dance floor," he said. "We have been very interested in Suzuki. We wanted to make sure we won the bidding. There was competition. We won."

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - In the Mariners' grand plan, No. 51 will live again next season and it will be emblazoned with the name that in Japan is instantaneously recognizable.
Ichiro.
As with Elvis and Tiger, no last name is necessary, and in fact Ichiro Suzuki, the biggest celebrity in Japanese baseball, officially dropped his several years ago.
The Mariners yesterday were awarded the negotiating rights to Suzuki, a seven-time Pacific League batting champion who is trying to become the first Japanese position player in the major leagues. In blind bidding among several major-league teams, the Mariners submitted the highest figure - a staggering $13.125 million (1.4 billion yen) that will go to the Orix BlueWave, Suzuki's team in Kobe, if the Mariners sign him within 30 days.
"This is a great player, one of the best players in the world," Mariner chairman Howard Lincoln said. "He's an extraordinary defensive player with a strong arm, and we think he could be a great leadoff hitter. His type of baseball and Safeco Field go hand in glove."
"The bid is merely an opportunity to get on the dance floor," he said. "We have been very interested in Suzuki. We wanted to make sure we won the bidding. There was competition. We won."

The Right Stuff is a 1983 American film adaptation of Tom Wolfe's 1979 book The Right Stuff about the test pilots who were involved in high-speed aeronautical research at Edwards Air Force Base as well as those selected to be astronauts for Project Mercury, the United States' first attempt at manned spaceflight. The story contrasts the "Mercury Seven" and their families with pilots like Chuck Yeager, who was considered by many test pilots to be the best of them all, but was never selected as an astronaut. Showing Many Sides Of Leonardo Da Vinci

There are models of many of his cunning clocks, flying machines and other inventions; there are reproductions of his amazingly accurate anatomical and botanical drawings; there are paintings attributed to his students and disciples, (many are controversial among art historians); there are copies of his "notebooks," the information-crammed journals he used for everything from shopping lists to scientific observations.
One thing the show does not have is the Codex Leicester, the Leonardo manuscript that Bill Gates bought in 1994 for $30.8 million. The Codex was on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York last fall and will be shown at the Seattle Art Museum from Oct. 23 through Jan. 4, 1998. SAM is organizing its own show around the Codex
