Gates Gives UW $12 Million For Medical Research

Computer wizard Bill Gates was celebrated twice today - once by Forbes Magazine, which named him America's second-wealthiest man, and once by the University of Washington, which named him its most generous benefactor.

Gates, chairman and chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp., gave the UW $12 million this morning for medical research in a new field. The gift is the largest the university has ever received from an individual. Paul Allen, also a Microsoft founder, gave $11 million to the UW in 1988 to build a library.

Gates announced the gift this morning, earmarking the money to establish a new Department of Molecular Biotechnology. That is an interdisciplinary field in which biologists work with scientists from other areas - applied mathematics, applied physics and computer science - on new tools to further basic medical research.

Gates Gives UW $12 Million For Medical Research

Computer wizard Bill Gates was celebrated twice today - once by Forbes Magazine, which named him America's second-wealthiest man, and once by the University of Washington, which named him its most generous benefactor.

Gates, chairman and chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp., gave the UW $12 million this morning for medical research in a new field. The gift is the largest the university has ever received from an individual. Paul Allen, also a Microsoft founder, gave $11 million to the UW in 1988 to build a library.

Gates announced the gift this morning, earmarking the money to establish a new Department of Molecular Biotechnology. That is an interdisciplinary field in which biologists work with scientists from other areas - applied mathematics, applied physics and computer science - on new tools to further basic medical research.

At approximately 4:20 p.m. EST, Eagle 1, a United States Park Police Bell 206L-1 Long Ranger helicopter, N2PP, based at the "Eagles Nest" at Anacostia Park in Washington, D.C. and manned by pilot Donald W. Usher and paramedic Melvin E. (Gene) Windsor arrived and began attempting to assist the survivors to shore. The helicopter pilot had to gently move the survivor across the ice, while avoiding the sides of the bridge and keeping an eye on the crowd.

Gates Gives UW $12 Million For Medical Research

Computer wizard Bill Gates was celebrated twice today - once by Forbes Magazine, which named him America's second-wealthiest man, and once by the University of Washington, which named him its most generous benefactor.

Gates, chairman and chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp., gave the UW $12 million this morning for medical research in a new field. The gift is the largest the university has ever received from an individual. Paul Allen, also a Microsoft founder, gave $11 million to the UW in 1988 to build a library.

Gates announced the gift this morning, earmarking the money to establish a new Department of Molecular Biotechnology. That is an interdisciplinary field in which biologists work with scientists from other areas - applied mathematics, applied physics and computer science - on new tools to further basic medical research.

The Medical Corps of the United States Navy is a staff corps consisting of doctors in a variety of specialties. The corps of commissioned officers was founded on 3 March 1871.

Prior to the formal establishment of the corps, ships’ surgeons served without commissions, unless given one by the commanding officer. Those commissions would be for the duration of a specific cruise.

However, facing a shortage of trained physicians to serve the needs of the Navy and Marine Corps, the Uniformed Services Health Professions Revitalization Act of 1972 was passed. This was a two-pronged act in which the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and the Health Professions Scholarship Program were created. In both programs, civilians are given a direct commission to the rank of Ensign (rank) (O-1) in the United States Navy Reserve which they hold throughout the four years of their medical education. During this time they receive financial assistance on the condition that they meet reservist requirements, maintain military standards, and agree to serve on active duty as physicians for at least 4 years if they do HPSP, 7 years of service are required of those who go to med school at USUHS.

Upon graduation, the new physicians supersede to the rank of Lieutenant (O-3) and are called to active duty to serve as interns (PGY-1) at a Navy or Marine Corps hospital.

Upon completion of an internship year, a Navy physician usually is deployed to the fleet as a General Medical Officer, though opportunities exist at this point in their career either to complete full residency training in the field of their choice or undergo 6 months of training to become either a Flight Surgeon or Undersea Medical Officer.

As of 2004, the Navy Medical Corps has over 4,000 active duty and reserve commissioned officers holding more than 47 specialties and almost 200 sub-specialties.

(b) Whoever, in time of war, with intent that the same shall be communicated to the enemy, collects, records, publishes, or communicates, or attempts to elicit any information with respect to the movement, numbers, description, condition, or disposition of any of the Armed Forces, ships, aircraft, or war materials of the United States, or with respect to the plans or conduct, or supposed plans or conduct of any naval or military operations, or with respect to any works or measures undertaken for or connected with, or intended for the fortification or defense of any place, or any other information relating to the public defense, which might be useful to the enemy, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life.

(c) If two or more persons conspire to violate this section, and one or more of such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each of the parties to such conspiracy shall be subject to the punishment provided for the offense which is the object of such conspiracy.

(d)(1) Any person convicted of a violation of this section shall forfeit to the United States irrespective of any provision of State law—

(A) any property constituting, or derived from, any proceeds the person obtained, directly or indirectly, as the result of such violation, and

The gift will establish the Mary Gates Endowment for Students to support outstanding undergraduate students. Mary Gates, who died last June, was a 1950 UW graduate and served on the university's Board of Regents from 1975 to 1993.


University officials said regents will be asked at a May 19 meeting to name a campus building Mary Gates Hall. The building formerly housed the physics department but is to be renovated and expanded as a center for undergraduate education.

Sonics' New Logo Seems Not So Super

There were cheers and jeers yesterday when the Seattle SuperSonics unveiled the team's new logo and colors. In the instant Godden poll, taken yesterday, the logo rated a 36.3 percent favorable vote.

More than half the 33 folks responding (54.5 percent) said the new look was "ugly," "not as good as the old logo" or "doesn't say basketball." About 9 percent reserved judgment, saying, "It'll take some getting used to."

The logo incorporates two new colors, bronze and red, along with the traditional green and yellow. But the new Sonics green no longer is Crayola spring green. It's a richer hue, the green of Douglas fir forests.

The new colors took the harshest criticism: "dull," "muddy" and "blecchh." The design, produced by the NBA's Creative Service Group, fared better, although naysayers had the pithiest descriptions.


When in Cyberia: The July issue of "W," a magazine for affluent lifestyles, headlines a story on "Bill Gates and the Seattle Cyber Barons." The author wangled a tour of the palatial waterfront home of Charles Simonyi, Microsoft's chief software architect. But other cyber barons were considerably more camera shy.

"W" had to settle for exterior photos of two homes belonging to Microsoft's Bill and Melinda French Gates. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, for some reason, is shown next to a picture of the restored interior of the Paramount Theatre.

Gates Bows Out As Senate Panel Revisits Microsoft -- Software Giant Calls Hearing `A Stacked Deck'

WASHINGTON - Days before Bill Gates appeared in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last March, he called Sen. Orrin Hatch and asked him to add some Microsoft allies to a panel that appeared loaded with enemies.

The hearing didn't turn out to be quite the ambush that Microsoft's chairman feared, but neither was it a pep rally for the world's largest software company.

Tomorrow morning, when Hatch, R-Utah, trains his investigative focus on Microsoft's business practices for the third time, Gates won't be there, and he won't be sending a representative.

"Given Sen. Hatch's continual attacks against Microsoft, it is not clear that additional testimony from Microsoft is going to serve any additional purpose," said Microsoft spokesman Mark Murray. "This hearing is a stacked deck to heap criticism on Microsoft and put a spotlight on our competitors' complaints."

Pseudologia fantastica, or pathological lying, is one of several terms applied by psychiatrists to the behaviour of habitual or compulsive lying.

It was first described in the medical literature in 1891. One definition of pathological lying is the following:

Pathological lying is falsification entirely disproportionate to any discernible end in view, may be extensive and very complicated, and may manifest over a period of years or even a lifetime.

The defining characteristics of pseudologia fantastica are that, first, the stories are not entirely improbable and often have some element of truth. They aren't a manifestation of delusion or some more wider form of psychosis: upon confrontation, the person can acknowledge them to be untrue, even if unwillingly. Bill Gates' appointment of longtime friend and confidant Steve Ballmer as president of Microsoft marks a return to company roots for both senior executives.

Gates said he wants to return to the product side of Microsoft, which he, Paul Allen and Harvard colleague Monte Davidoff started 23 years ago by authoring a version of the BASIC programming language for the first mass-marketed personal computer.

Ballmer, who had been executive vice president for sales and support, will assume more day-to-day operational oversight, similar to the responsibilities he had when he started work at Microsoft as operations chief and the company's 28th employee in June 1980.

Remarks on the 25th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing

July 20th, 1994


Thank you very much, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, veterans of the Apollo program, the friends of the space program in America, and most of all, to those whom we honor here today.

Just a day before he died, President Kennedy compared our space program to a boy who comes upon a wall in an orchard. The wall is tall. It looks insurmountable, but the boy is curious about what lies on the other side. So he throws his cap over the wall, and then he has no choice but to go after it.

Twenty-five years ago today, our Nation, represented by these three brave men, made that climb. And so, today we are gathered to celebrate their voyage and, I honestly hope, to recommit ourselves to their spirit of discovery.Apollo 11 , Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were our guides for the wondrous, the unimaginable at that time, the true handiwork of God. They realized the dreams of a nation. They fulfilled an American destiny. They taught us that nothing is impossible if we set our sights high enough.

Today we're honored to have them and all the other Apollo astronauts who are here with us. For every American who followed your journey, especially for those of us who were young on that fateful day 25 years ago, and for the young Americans who still dream dreams of a future in space, we thank you all.

Looking back on that mission, one thing is clear that we ought to remember today. It wasn't easy. The ship to the heavens measured just 13 feet in diameter. The destination was 3 days and a world away. On the third day as the tiny module descended to the Moon, it came dangerously close to a crash landing—that happens around here all the time—[laughter] —but Neil Armstrong took over the controls from the computer and landed safely.

Very odd dream about trying to drive a car. The problem though was that I was in a seat behind the driver's seat and to the right. It seems like a forgotten dream that has recurred a million forgotten times. I was trying to navigate the car, it was some kind of van actually at that point, while in traffic, with heavy rain, going down a steep, long hill that is vaguely familiar as I analyze that image still in my waking mind. Sometime later I was stopped and I think it was a car at that point, perhaps at the bottom of the hill.


Someone I knew from somewhere, perhaps in the place I had just left, walked by and said something that I don't remember.

Gates Returns To His Microsoft Roots -- He's Going To Concentrate On Products, Not Public Relations

Bill Gates' appointment of longtime friend and confidant Steve Ballmer as president of Microsoft marks a return to company roots for both senior executives.

Gates said he wants to return to the product side of Microsoft, which he, Paul Allen and Harvard colleague Monte Davidoff started 23 years ago by authoring a version of the BASIC programming language for the first mass-marketed personal computer.

Ballmer, who had been executive vice president for sales and support, will assume more day-to-day operational oversight, similar to the responsibilities he had when he started work at Microsoft as operations chief and the company's 28th employee in June 1980.
