Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a 1979 science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the first film based on the Star Trek television series. When a mysterious and immensely powerful alien cloud called V'ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path, Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of his old starship—the USS Enterprise—to lead it on a mission to save the planet and determine V'ger's origins.


The director carried the fresh print of the film to the world premiere, held at the K-B Mac Arthur Theater in Washington, D.C. Roddenberry, Wise, and the principal cast attended the function, which also served as an invitational benefit for the scholarship and youth education fund of the National Space Club. While thousands of fans were expected to attend, rain reduced fan turnout to around 300. The premiere was followed by a black-tie reception at the National Air and Space Museum. More than 500 people—consisting of the cast and crew, working members of the space community, and the few "hardcore Trekkies" who could afford the $100 admission price—filled the museum.

The Motion Picture opened in North America on December 7, 1979, in 859 theaters and set a box office record for highest weekend gross, making $11,815,203 in its first weekend (generally considered to be a slow time for the movie business).

Residents will have an opportunity to see images of the final design of Seattle's new Central Library at a public open house scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave.


The Central Library will operate in a temporary facility at 800 Pike St., part of the expanded Washington State Convention and Trade Center, until the new building opens in late 2003. Demolition of the present library and construction of the new building should get under way this summer. The current Central Library is tentatively scheduled to shut down at 6 p.m. Friday, June 8. No downtown library service will be available until the temporary facility opens at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7.

This year marks the Nation's twenty-fourth annual celebration of Law Day, U.S.A.—a special day for reflection on our heritage of individual freedom and for rededication to maintaining, through law, the principles of liberty which govern this land.

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, invite the American people to celebrate Friday, May 1, 1981, as Law Day, U.S.A., and to mark its observance with programs and ceremonies as befits our great heritage of liberty under law.

'Copyright infringement' (or copyright violation) is the unauthorized use of material that is covered by copyright law, in a manner that violates one of the copyright owner's exclusive rights, such as the right to reproduce or perform the copyrighted work, or to make derivative works.


First element: establishing ownership of a valid copyright

A plaintiff establishes ownership by authorship (by the plaintiff itself or by one who assigned rights to the plaintiff) of (1) an original work of authorship that is (2) fixed in a tangible medium (e.g. a book or musical recording). Registration is not required for copyright itself, but in most cases is a jurisdictional requirement to bring the suit. Registration is also useful because it gives rise to the presumption of a valid copyright, and eliminates the innocent infringement defense, and (if timely made) it allows the plaintiff to elect statutory damages, and be eligible for a possible award of attorney fees.

Works that are not sufficiently original, or which constitute facts, a method or process cannot enjoy copy protection.. U.S. Courts do not recognize the "sweat of the brow" doctrine, which originally allowed protection for those who labored to collect and organize facts. To combat this, business which assemble databases of information have relied on contract law where copyright law offers no protection. For a work to be original, it must possess a "modicum of creativity", which is a "low threshold" although some creativity must exist.

Copyright protects the fixed expression of ideas, but not the ideas themselves. (Ideas are protected by patents). Nevertheless, an expression must exist in a fixed tangible medium. A movie script writer who discusses a plot idea which has not yet been written would not be protected if another heard his idea and wrote a screenplay himself. Whether RAM constitutes a "fixed medium" is a contentious issue in copyright litigation because of the transitory nature of RAM.


Second element: establishing actual copying

A plaintiff establishes actual copying with direct or indirect evidence. Direct evidence is satisfied either by a defendant's admission to copying or the testimony of witnesses who observed the defendant in the act. More commonly, a plaintiff relies on circumstantial or indirect evidence. A court will infer copying by a showing of a "striking similarity" between the copyrighted work and the alleged copy, along with a showing of both access and use of that access. A plaintiff may establish access by proof of distribution over a large geographical area, or by eyewitness testimony that the defendant owned a copy of the protected work. Access alone is not sufficient to establish infringement. The plaintiff must show a similarity between the two works, and the degree of similarity will affect the probability that illicit copying in fact occurred in the court's eyes. Even then, the plaintiff must show that the copying amounted to improper appropriation.
Indeed, the US Supreme Court has held that not all copying constitutes infringement and a showing of misappropriation is necessary.


Third element: establishing misappropriation

A copyrighted work may contain elements which are not copyrightable, such as facts, ideas, themes, or content in the public domain. A plaintiff alleging misappropriation must first demonstrate that what the defendant appropriated from the copyrighted work was protectible. Second, a plaintiff must show that the intended audience will recognize substantial similarities between the two works. The intended audience may be the general public, or a specialized field. The degree of similarity necessary for a court to find misappropriation is not easily defined. Indeed, "the test for infringement of a copyright is of necessity vague." Two methods are used to determine if unlawful appropriation has occurred: the subtractive method and the totality method.

The subtractive method, also known as the "abstraction/subtraction approach" seeks to analyze what parts of a copyrighted work are protectible and which are not. The unprotected elements are subtracted and the fact finder then determines whether substantial similarities exist in the protectible expression which remains. For instance, if the copyright holder for West Side Story alleged infringement, the elements of that musical borrowed from Romeo and Juliet would be subtracted before comparing it to the allegedly infringing work because Romeo and Juliet exists in the public domain.

The totality method, also known as the "total concept and feel" approach takes the work as a whole with all elements included when determining if a substantial similarity exists. The individual elements of the alleged infringing work may by themselves be substantially different from their corresponding part in the copyrighted work, but nevertheless taken together be a clear misappropriation of copyrightable material.

World's top architects submit proposals to design new downtown library


Some of the world's top architects have submitted proposals to the Seattle Public Library in hopes of being selected to design the new downtown library. "We are thrilled with the response we have received," said Betty Jane Narver, Library Board president.

Capital Program Director Alex Harris said the 29 proposals received include international firms from Paris, London, Stuttgart, Toronto and Rotterdam, local firms such as NBBJ, LMN Architects and Zimmer Gunsul Fransca Partnership, as well as national firms from Chicago, New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and California. "We are really pleased with the number of firms who made submittals," she added. (Complete list starts on page three.) "It was right in the ballpark of what we were expecting considering complexity and demands of the project."

A new 355,000-square-foot library is slated to open in 2003. The project is part of the Libraries for All" program to rebuild and update Seattle's 107-year-old library system. A $196.4 million bond measure to fund the capital projects was approved overwhelmingly by voters in November. The deadline for receiving qualifications from architects interested in designing the new $89.9 million central library was 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 31).

A 14-member Architect Selection Advisory Panel will immediately begin work reviewing the submissions. The panel will recommend three to five firms, which the Library Board will consider at a meeting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Central Library, 1000 4th Ave., Lee Auditorium. If an international firm is selected, it will be required to partner with a local firm for the second stage of the process.

The three to five firms will give a public presentation of their work on Monday, May 10, at Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Recital Hall. (The time will be set when the number of firms is announced.) The firms will be given assignments on that day, and will present their results at a public meeting on Wednesday, May 12, at the Central Library, 1000 4th Ave.

I was thinking of how my wife Phoebe was showing off to my grandmother a collection of art I had created for her over the years such as medallions and so on. In one case though I had given her the medal of a Navy Cross I had received during the Vietnam War and I created an elaborate cover story for explaining where I got that item and I never did tell her that the item was a Navy Cross medal and I am not certain if she ever figured that out. So anyway, the story was elaborate and I told her among the details that I was overseas sometime around the timeframe of 1970 or earlier or later and I got that item from a shoebox a woman gave that included some items such as a wristwatch and other items and that woman was named Charlie. My grandmother pondered that detail and never did elaborate on what that meant to her but they did talk a lot afterwards and I guess my grandmother was interested in all the other stories associated with the art I had created for my
wife.

World's top architects submit proposals to design new downtown library


Some of the world's top architects have submitted proposals to the Seattle Public Library in hopes of being selected to design the new downtown library. "We are thrilled with the response we have received," said Betty Jane Narver, Library Board president.

Capital Program Director Alex Harris said the 29 proposals received include international firms from Paris, London, Stuttgart, Toronto and Rotterdam, local firms such as NBBJ, LMN Architects and Zimmer Gunsul Fransca Partnership, as well as national firms from Chicago, New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and California. "We are really pleased with the number of firms who made submittals," she added. (Complete list starts on page three.) "It was right in the ballpark of what we were expecting considering complexity and demands of the project."

A new 355,000-square-foot library is slated to open in 2003. The project is part of the Libraries for All" program to rebuild and update Seattle's 107-year-old library system. A $196.4 million bond measure to fund the capital projects was approved overwhelmingly by voters in November. The deadline for receiving qualifications from architects interested in designing the new $89.9 million central library was 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 31).

A 14-member Architect Selection Advisory Panel will immediately begin work reviewing the submissions. The panel will recommend three to five firms, which the Library Board will consider at a meeting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Central Library, 1000 4th Ave., Lee Auditorium. If an international firm is selected, it will be required to partner with a local firm for the second stage of the process.

The three to five firms will give a public presentation of their work on Monday, May 10, at Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Recital Hall. (The time will be set when the number of firms is announced.) World's top architects submit proposals to design new downtown library


Some of the world's top architects have submitted proposals to the Seattle Public Library in hopes of being selected to design the new downtown library. "We are thrilled with the response we have received," said Betty Jane Narver, Library Board president.

Capital Program Director Alex Harris said the 29 proposals received include international firms from Paris, London, Stuttgart, Toronto and Rotterdam, local firms such as NBBJ, LMN Architects and Zimmer Gunsul Fransca Partnership, as well as national firms from Chicago, New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and California. "We are really pleased with the number of firms who made submittals," she added. (Complete list starts on page three.) "It was right in the ballpark of what we were expecting considering complexity and demands of the project."

A new 355,000-square-foot library is slated to open in 2003. The project is part of the Libraries for All" program to rebuild and update Seattle's 107-year-old library system. A $196.4 million bond measure to fund the capital projects was approved overwhelmingly by voters in November. The deadline for receiving qualifications from architects interested in designing the new $89.9 million central library was 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 31).

A 14-member Architect Selection Advisory Panel will immediately begin work reviewing the submissions. The panel will recommend three to five firms, which the Library Board will consider at a meeting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Central Library, 1000 4th Ave., Lee Auditorium. If an international firm is selected, it will be required to partner with a local firm for the second stage of the process.

The three to five firms will give a public presentation of their work on Monday, May 10, at Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Recital Hall. (The time will be set when the number of firms is announced.) World's top architects submit proposals to design new downtown library


Some of the world's top architects have submitted proposals to the Seattle Public Library in hopes of being selected to design the new downtown library. "We are thrilled with the response we have received," said Betty Jane Narver, Library Board president.

Capital Program Director Alex Harris said the 29 proposals received include international firms from Paris, London, Stuttgart, Toronto and Rotterdam, local firms such as NBBJ, LMN Architects and Zimmer Gunsul Fransca Partnership, as well as national firms from Chicago, New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and California. "We are really pleased with the number of firms who made submittals," she added. (Complete list starts on page three.) "It was right in the ballpark of what we were expecting considering complexity and demands of the project."

A new 355,000-square-foot library is slated to open in 2003. The project is part of the Libraries for All" program to rebuild and update Seattle's 107-year-old library system. A $196.4 million bond measure to fund the capital projects was approved overwhelmingly by voters in November. The deadline for receiving qualifications from architects interested in designing the new $89.9 million central library was 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 31).

A 14-member Architect Selection Advisory Panel will immediately begin work reviewing the submissions. The panel will recommend three to five firms, which the Library Board will consider at a meeting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Central Library, 1000 4th Ave., Lee Auditorium. If an international firm is selected, it will be required to partner with a local firm for the second stage of the process.

The three to five firms will give a public presentation of their work on Monday, May 10, at Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Recital Hall. (The time will be set when the number of firms is announced.) The firms will be given assignments on that day, and will present their results at a public meeting on Wednesday, May 12, at the Central Library, 1000 4th Ave.

The total cost of the Libraries for All plan is $238 million. The Seattle Public Library Foundation is leading the campaign to raise private funds for the plan.

Gilligan's Island

Original run September 26, 1964 – September 4, 1967

Gilligan's Island was an American TV sitcom originally produced by United Artists Television. It aired for three seasons on the CBS network, from September 26, 1964 to September 4, 1967. It was sponsored by Philip Morris & Company and Procter & Gamble. The show followed the comic adventures of seven castaways as they attempted to survive and ultimately escape from a previously uninhabited island where they were shipwrecked. In 2002, Gilligan's Island came back as a reality show, similar to Survivor, where 7 contestants were shipwrecked on an island. They then had to recreate the original Gilligan's Island sitcom with costumes and props.

Gilligan's Island ran for a total of 98 episodes. The first season (consisting of 36 episodes) was filmed in black-and-white though they were colorized in later syndication. However, the next two seasons (62 episodes) and three TV movie sequels were filmed in color.

Enjoying solid ratings during its original run, the show grew in popularity during decades of syndication. Today, the title character of Gilligan is widely recognized as a comedic American popular culture icon.

The Skipper

The Skipper is the title and nickname of Jonas Grumby, a fictional character from the hit 1960s sitcom Gilligan's Island. Played by Alan Hale, Jr., the Skipper (his actual name was rarely used after the show's pilot episode) was the captain of the S.S. Minnow on its "three hour tour" in Hawaii when he, first mate Gilligan (played by Bob Denver), and their tourist passengers were caught in a violent storm and stranded on a deserted island. He often acts as leader until times of crisis when he usually defers to The Professor. He is sort of the strongman succumbed to loss of exercise, despite carrying out most physical work on the island or making Gilligan do it. He is also the most superstitious castaway, sometimes putting him in conflict with The Professor's rationalistic view of things.

The Skipper is lovable but is continually irritated by the clumsiness and ineptitude of his "little buddy" Gilligan, despite the fact that they are good friends. Though Gilligan is usually devoid of any malicious intent, the Skipper is occasionally the butt of his weight. In the 2003 book Gilligan's Wake (ISBN 0-312-29123-X), Esquire film and television critic Tom Carson writes a backstory that the Skipper served with John F. Kennedy of the PT-109 and McHale of McHale's Navy. The book was critically acclaimed, drawing comparisons to the works of Thomas Pynchon. John F. Kennedy was also skipper of his boat, and the 1964 Gilligan's Island would follow the 1961 pilot episode of McHale's Navy, the 1962 series, and the 1963 movie PT 109 as movies about PT-sized boats that were shipwrecked with Navy sailors onboard. Little was ever learned about his past, but in several episodes he variously mentions having several ships blown out from under him, and his veterans status, implying that he'd served in WWII. In another episode he gets amnesia, and thinks he's on a covert mission behind enemy lines, mistaking the others to be Japanese soldiers, including Ginger who he mistakenly believes to be a ventriloquist. He claims to be the
CO of the 177th Infantry Regiment which is a US Army regiment, but whether this actually happened or was just a wish fulfilling fantasy is open to debate, for later on in the shows run he says he was simply a cook. In one episode he claimed to have been a Navy Bandmaster and in another he claims to have been the best cardplayer in the US Navy.

The gift will help supplement and enhance funding for Seattle Public Library's “Libraries for All” capital plan. A $196.4 million bond measure (Proposition One), which will fund the majority of the plan, received an overwhelming 72 percent voter-approval on Nov. 3. The total cost of the Libraries for All plan is $238 million. The Seattle Public Library Foundation is leading the campaign to raise private funds for the plan.

Patrons flock to Central Library grand opening

Skorick was third in line yesterday morning for the grand opening. The $165.5 million marriage of glass and steel saw 9,000 visitors ushered through its doors in just two hours. Attendance swelled to 24,013 by 5 p.m.



If much of the advance fanfare had centered on the renowned Dutch architect and his bold design, yesterday was about the regular folks who'll be using the library.

Mayor Greg Nickels said as much in his opening remarks

Seattle's most talked-about event next month is the grand opening of the dramatic new Central Library at 1000 Fourth Ave., designed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture of the Netherlands and Seattle-based LMN Architects.

During the past 2-1/2 years of construction, the public has watched with excitement as the giant, 11-level steel and shimmering glass structure has gone up. The community will finally get to see what's inside when the doors open at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 23. The library will stay open until 7 p.m. to accommodate the estimated 30,000 people expected to tour the 362,987-square-foot building that day.

"When people walk in, they will be awash in the natural light and voluminous space," said City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs. " It is a stimulating haven and treasure house of books, media, computers and other resources. At last, the people of Seattle will have the library they deserve."

LIBRARY BOARD APPROVES ENHANCED GLASS AND METAL EXTERIOR FOR NEW CENTRAL LIBRARY


The Seattle Public Library board of trustees unanimously voted at its Feb. 25 meeting to enhance the appearance and performance of the exterior "skin" of the new Central Library.

The curtainwall, which consists of insulated glass panels that enclose an aluminum mesh layer, will screen the sun, create soft interior light to enhance reading areas and protect against heat and glare.

"This is an incredible advancement for this building," said Linda Larson, Library Board president. "It's a significant architectural enhancement."

The decision to enhance the design will increase the budget of the new Central Library by $4.33 million to a total of $165.5 million. The entire increase comes from private funds.

The 362,987-square-foot Central Library, designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas in a joint venture with Seattle-based LMN Architects, is scheduled to open in late 2003 at 1000 Fourth Ave.
