I need to think back more to my hobby as a kid with model rockets from Estes. There are probably some notable clues to that. I remember the first time I launched a multi-stage rocket. I was in a hurry to launch it after constructing it and did not give the glue enough time to dry. I launched it from the practice field at that elementary school in De Queen.
The second stage didn't separate.
Can't remember how much damage occurred from the main stage burning into the second stage.

A new explanation formed recently in my conscious-mind as a more likely explanation
First of all, let's "put it in generational perspective"
Back in the year 1984, an 18-year-old in Florida could go to any place and purchase alcohol
Before Florida, when I was in high-school, sneaking across the state line a few miles away into Oklahoma and they would sell alcohol to just about anyone with money, as I understood it. But not me. I had school and a steady, part-time after-school laborer job that paid for the fuel in my red 1967 Ford pickup-truck that I paid for with my own money. So I was too busy in high-school working to go out drinking alcohol. Then I went on active-duty US Navy just three days after high-school and after 8 weeks of basic training, I was back in school and easily succeeding at my studies and I had a lot more free-time. Which I used to drink alcohol at the base's night-club for enlisted
And that was the problem
The reason I let myself do that is because I felt miserable during the day. I had no problems with my coursework in Basic Electricity and Electronics School, a prerequisite for the rating's A-school, but I would sometimes have a very hard time staying awake. Completely clueless of the effects of drugs. Possibly just a little Valium that was surreptitiously and clandestinely slipped into my food somewhere. I would get to class and start feeling drowsy. Just like at that hospital the police took me to on 5/4/2005 when I went there to complain. On the second day, someone came into my room and told me to meet with the other people for a presentation on some topic I forget now. All I remember is sitting there and I was miserable as I struggled to stay awake and pay attention to the woman speaking in front of the whiteboard. See, those lazy, druggie pot-heads would just give up and go back to the room and sleep it off. But not me. I was miserable because that was not me. Other people in the conference room were probably staff people there to observe me for their training, because I wasn't paying money to the hospital for being there. Back in 1984, we were not actively at war. I could have simply been drafted for a special purpose. And my hypothesis bears out that real possibility. The officials records sent to me from my request to the archives do not tell the entire story. There was an earlier incident when I saw the XO for the first time and he let me off with a warning for falling asleep in class. They were all very polite about it. Among other meetings with other officer's and senior enlisted, I was eventually sent to the CO for NJP. I had almost finished the course and was academically successful. By December, I was an undesignated E-3 on the USS Taylor FFG-50. But before that, I was miserable most days because of drowsiness
So I could go over there to the base night-club and load up as much as I could on Jack Daniel's whiskey and because it was inexpensive. That's probably how they were getting me. Along with my food.

I wonder if that's the same day I remember graduating from United States Navy basic training in Orlando.
Must have been.
The uncertainty in my mind is because of vague memories I still have about those last days before we left.
I can still visualize that last day, had my seabag and sunglasses on and the company commander sending us off and I can visualize myself walking for the last time out the door of that barracks we had been in for 8 weeks.
I went across base to begin Basic Electricity and Electronics School for the Electronics Technician occupation rating, a rating I chose because it was one of only two ratings in the Advanced Electronics Field, along with Fire Controlman, and the ET rating required several more weeks of electronics training than FC and I found that appealing to me. Several weeks later, being completely unprepared for unhindered access to cheap alcohol, having been sheltered from alcohol and then on my own with no old woman screeching at me, with no closed door in her house I could ever escape to away from her, I let myself get kicked out of school and sent out to the fleet to work in the deck department as a non-rated sailor. Working my butt off, as since 14 years old, from my own personal initiative and with no personal role models in my past experience, I had become accustomed to regular employment, I was allowed to select a rating to aspire for and I chose the gun/missile Fire Controlman (FC) (in the last days of the Fire Control Technician Missiles (FTM) rating) and worked my way back up
I had spent over a year - a total of 419 days to be exact - on a shakedown period for the USS Taylor FFG-50 where I had many responsibilities including being responsible for the boatswain locker, helmsman, lookout, repair locker personnel, damage control, others , including helicopter flight deck crewman
All I know for certain is my official military records tell me I was transferred from basic training by the United States Navy on Monday, July 16, 1984.
The previous Friday was the 13th.
The details I vaguely recall are about how my company, C155, finished the course of instruction several days before the other company's finished. The reason, I vaguely recall, is that several companies began the course of instruction during the same week but on different days of the week. So we started on a day before the others started and we finished a few days before the last company finished. If we started on a Monday then others started on Friday. So we finished on a Monday and they finished on a Friday. But we all graduated on the same day, which I believe was a Friday and I have reason to believe was the 13th. I can't imagine we were goofing off for over a week waiting for the other company to finish the course. K076 was the female company I remember starting with us on the same day and I think they were in the same large classroom with us for classroom instruction. I remember a vast number of sailors being on the field for graduation ceremony and my company was a large group of sailors.
The answer might be out there somewhere on the internet but I can't find it.

I wonder if that was the precise day we arrived for the first time at our homeport of Charleston, South Carolina
I remember it was still cold in Bath, Maine, as we made that long, tedious journey on the river from the shipyards to the ocean coast of Maine
The ship was new-construction and our journey was the first time we arrived for permanent assignment to that US Navy base in Charleston
The timeframe as I recall it is about right. Tried finding before records with that precise date we arrived in Charleston, SC. Never found anything definitive. I have good reason to believe that events were designed for my later discovery. Because only *I* would know to even look for it.

A few minutes ago I started thinking that maybe I started at Princeton University in 1972. I would have been 13 at the time as Thomas Ray. I remember that Kerry Burgess started first grade in 1972. But then I decided that I probably started Princeton earlier than 1972 and maybe 1972 was the year I completed my first major degree. Or 1972 doesn t really mean anything in particular to Thomas Ray; rather it is there for continuity sake for the life of Kerry Burgess.
