I put a few hours work into this calendar day topic. Then I lost interest in it late in day of the 9th and I was about to shelf it.
Then I read about the SLS news and I decided to take a closer look at it and put more work into it.

While Microsoft continues to trumpet the success of its NT operating system over Unix-based systems, the US Navy is having second thoughts about putting NT at the helm. A system failure on the USS Yorktown last September temporarily paralyzed the cruiser, leaving it stalled in port for the remainder of a weekend.

EPISODE RECAP
Jesse asks the Pope and the Archbishop where God is. The Archbishop makes sure that Jesse wants to know, and then talks about a rebellion of angels and now He's on the run. The Pope says "Give me a break" and insists that it's not true. He says that God has moved on to make a new creation, something more loving and just. The Archbishop doesn't believe him, and the Pope talks about a new species. Jesse figures that no one knows where God is, and Starr agrees. The Pope mentions the boy, and says that it's time for him to lead. Starr cuts him off and dismisses both men. Jesse asks who the boy is, and uses Genesis to force Starr to answer. Starr says that the boy is the Messiah.

Here's another illustration for the way things are now.
If I had tons of money then there would be two distinct responses I can think of the people - the little pigeon rats - that are constantly around me everywhere, even now in my diminished circumstances.
Those people would be lining up around the corner just to kiss my ass.
They would also resent the hell out of me.
Watching me live the sort of good life they can never possibly expect to have.

Stem Cell Funding Is Put in Spotlight
By STEPHANIE CHAVEZ
MAY 9, 2004 12 AM
TIMES STAFF WRITER
In rare remarks aimed at influencing national public policy, former First Lady Nancy Reagan told a star-studded crowd Saturday night that stem cell research must be pursued “to save families from the pain” of debilitating illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease, which afflicts her husband, former President Reagan.
“I am determined to do whatever I can,” she said after receiving a standing ovation at a gala fundraiser in her honor at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
She told the crowd, which included Michael J. Fox, Harrison Ford and James Taylor, that Alzheimer’s had taken her husband “to a distant place where I can no longer reach him.” She added that stem cell research held hope for a cure.
“I don’t see how we can turn our backs on this,” she said. “We have lost so much time. I just can’t bear to lose any more.”

Lisa Page Speaks: ‘There’s No Fathomable Way I Have Committed Any Crime at All’
The Daily Beast December 2, 2019
It’s not often that you interview a subject who has no interest in being famous. But recently, I did just that when I sat down with Lisa Page the week before Thanksgiving in my hotel room in Washington, D.C. Page, of course, is the former FBI lawyer whose text-message exchanges with agent Peter Strzok that belittled Donald Trump and expressed fear at his possible victory became international news. They were hijacked by Trump to fuel his “deep state” conspiracy.
For the nearly two years since her name first made the papers, she’s been publicly silent (she did have a closed-door interview with House members in July 2018). I asked her why she was willing to talk now. “Honestly, his demeaning fake orgasm was really the straw that broke the camel’s back,” she says. The president called out her name as he acted out an orgasm in front of thousands of people at a Minneapolis rally on Oct. 11.
That was the moment Page decided she had to speak up. “I had stayed quiet for years hoping it would fade away, but instead it got worse,” she says. “It had been so hard not to defend myself, to let people who hate me control the narrative. I decided to take my power back.”
She is also about to be back in the news cycle in a big way. On Dec. 9, the Justice Department inspector general report into Trump’s charges that the FBI spied on his 2016 campaign will come out. Leaked press accounts indicate the report will exonerate Page of the allegation that she acted unprofessionally or showed bias against Trump.
How does it feel after all this time to finally have the IG apparently affirm what she’s been saying all along? She said she wouldn’t discuss the findings until they were officially public, but she did note: “While it would be nice to have the IG confirm publicly that my personal opinions had absolutely no bearing on the course of the Russia investigations, I don’t kid myself that the fact will matter very much for a lot of people. The president has a very loud megaphone.”
Page, 39, is thin and athletic. She speaks in an exceedingly confident, clear, and lawyerly way. But having been through the MAGA meat grinder has clearly worn her down, not unlike the other women I’ve met who’ve been subjected to the president’s abuse. She is just slightly crumbly around the edges the way the president’s other victims are.
“It’s almost impossible to describe” what it’s like, she told me. “It’s like being punched in the gut. My heart drops to my stomach when I realize he has tweeted about me again. The president of the United States is calling me names to the entire world. He’s demeaning me and my career. It’s sickening.”
“But it’s also very intimidating because he’s still the president of the United States. And when the president accuses you of treason by name, despite the fact that I know there’s no fathomable way that I have committed any crime at all, let alone treason, he’s still somebody in a position to actually do something about that. To try to further destroy my life. It never goes away or stops, even when he’s not publicly attacking me.”
Does it affect you in your normal day-to-day life?
“I wish it didn’t,” she said. “I’m someone who’s always in my head anyway—so now otherwise normal interactions take on a different meaning. Like, when somebody makes eye contact with me on the Metro, I kind of wince, wondering if it’s because they recognize me, or are they just scanning the train like people do? It’s immediately a question of friend or foe? Or if I’m walking down the street or shopping and there’s somebody wearing Trump gear or a MAGA hat, I’ll walk the other way or try to put some distance between us because I’m not looking for conflict. Really, what I wanted most in this world is my life back.”

Trump: IG report of justified campaign probe shows 'attempted overthrow' of government
The long-awaited report by the Justice Department's watchdog of the FBI's probe of his 2016 campaign, released Monday, rebutted Trump's regular depiction of a politically biased plot against him.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Monday that a new Justice Department report that found a solid legal basis for the original FBI investigation of his 2016 campaign had actually documented an "attempted overthrow" of the government that was "far worse than I ever thought possible.
"It is an embarrassment to our country, it is dishonest, it is everything that a lot of people thought it would be except far worse," he said at the White House, following the release of the long-awaited report by the Justice Department's watchdog that rebutted his regular depiction of a politically biased plot against him.

The FBI's warrant system for spying on Americans is a mess, the IG report shows

WASHINGTON — Given the unsupported claims President Donald Trump has made for two years about the FBI’s Russia investigation — calling it a witch hunt cooked up by his political opponents — the conclusion by the Justice Department watchdog that the probe was justified was big news.
But the inspector general report’s other major findings — that there were serious problems with the way the FBI obtained a secret national security warrant to spy on a Trump campaign aide — were also noteworthy, if somewhat overshadowed by the bigger headlines.
For years, civil liberties activists have been warning that the process for obtaining secret warrants to spy on Americans under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act was dangerously flawed, in part because it is one-sided. The government tells judges behind closed doors why the spying is justified, and there is nobody in the room representing the target to question that evidence.

In response, defenders of the process have said: That’s exactly why the FBI and Justice Department are extraordinarily careful and meticulous in how they present evidence to the FISA court, which is no rubber stamp.
The report by Inspector General Michael Horowitz severely undercuts that assertion, at least when it comes to the FBI’s applications for surveillance of Carter Page, a Trump foreign policy adviser who was never charged with a crime.
The report found an FBI process so badly managed, so rife with errors, that the FBI director immediately issued a statement saying he was already implementing reforms.

neglected to exercise appropriate diligence, or otherwise failed to meet the standard of conduct that the FBI expects of its employees — and that our country expects of the FBI,” Director Christopher Wray said in a statement. “We are vested with significant authorities, and it is our obligation as public servants to ensure that these authorities are exercised with objectivity and integrity. Anything less falls short of the FBI’s duty to the American people.”
Because the criticism of the FBI was politically beneficial to Trump, Democrats who are normally quick to seize on abuses of national security power were notably muted. One group that was not was the non-partisan American Civil Liberties Union, whose national security director, Hina Shamsi, expressed alarm.
"When the Justice Department’s Inspector General finds significant concerns regarding flawed surveillance applications concerning the president's campaign advisers, it is clear that this regime lacks basic safeguards and is in need of serious reform,” she said in a statement. “While the report found that there wasn't an improper purpose or initiation of the investigation, it also found significant problems that are alarming from a civil liberties perspective.”
The flawed process outlined in the report, she said, “demonstrates how the secrecy shrouding the government’s one-sided FISA approval process breeds abuse. The concerns the inspector general identifies apply to intrusive investigations of others, including especially Muslims, and far better safeguards against abuse are necessary.”
"The system requires fundamental reforms, and Congress can start by providing defendants subjected to FISA surveillance the opportunity to review the government’s secret submissions," she added. "The FBI must also adopt higher standards for investigations involving constitutionally protected sensitive activities, such as political campaigns."
The IG report found 17 significant errors or omissions in four applications for surveillance on Page, which, in the end, was portrayed as yielding little relevant information.
“We concluded that the failures… represent serious performance failures by the supervisory and non-supervisory agents with responsibility over the FISA applications,” the report says. “These failures prevented (the Justice Department) from fully performing its gatekeeper function and deprived the decision makers the opportunity to make fully informed decisions. Although some of the factual misstatements and omissions we found in this review were arguably more significant than others, we believe that all of them taken together resulted in FISA applications that made it appear that the information supporting probable cause was stronger than was actually the case.”
In the most serious case, a low-level FBI lawyer altered an email to make it seem as if Page was not a CIA source, when in fact he was — something he confirmed to NBC News in an email Monday. That key fact might have cast his contacts with Russians in a different light, the IG found.
The IG report said the FBI relied heavily on a dossier compiled as part of a Democratic-funded opposition research campaign by a former British spy, Christopher Steele, while failing to inform the court that questions had arisen about Steele’s credibility.
For example, an FBI source validation review found that Steele, who had worked with the bureau in the past, provided information that was only "minimally corroborated." But the FBI didn’t tell that to the FISA court, the report says.
The FBI interviewed one of the sources who made claims about Page in the Steele dossier. The source contradicted some of what Steele had written, but the FBI didn’t tell that to the court.
That same source said Steele overstated the level of certainty around the notorious story about Trump’s supposed sexual dalliance at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Moscow. The source called it unconfirmed rumor and speculation.
The report said responsibility for the failures extends high up the FBI’s management chain.
“That so many basic and fundamental errors were made by three separate, handpicked teams on one of the most sensitive FBI investigations that was briefed to the highest levels within the FBI, and that FBI officials expected would eventually be subjected to close scrutiny, raised significant questions regarding the FBI chain of command’s management and supervision of the FISA process.”
Wray said some FBI employees could be disciplined. He said the bureau is “making concrete changes to ensure that our FISA protocols, verifications, layers of review, record-keeping requirements, and audits are more stringent and less susceptible to mistake or inaccuracy,” adding, “These new processes will also ensure that the FISA Court and the Department of Justice (DOJ) are apprised of all information in the FBI’s holdings relevant to a determination of probable cause."
Wray is also changing the rules on who has to approve sensitive investigations, such as those into political campaigns, he said, and on how the bureau handles confidential sources.
The FBI director for much of the period in question, James Comey, focused his public comments mainly on the IG’s debunking of Trump conspiracy theories, some of which were aimed at him.
He said little about what the IG portrayed as a significant failure on his watch.
“The report found lots of mistakes — that’s really significant and really unfortunate,” Comey said on MSNBC. “But that’s why you do IG reports.”

U.S. officials misled public on Afghan war, according to Washington Post
“We were devoid of a fundamental understanding of Afghanistan — we didn’t know what we were doing,” a senior American official is quoted as saying.
Dec. 9, 2019, 10:49 AM PST
By Saphora Smith
A trove of government documents shows that U.S. officials systematically misled the public about the war in Afghanistan during three presidential administrations, The Washington Post reported in an explosive story Monday.
The Post said the documents showed that senior U.S. officials hid evidence and distorted statistics to make it appear that the U.S. was winning the war in Afghanistan and claims they show that there was no consensus on the war’s objectives or how it would end.
“We were devoid of a fundamental understanding of Afghanistan — we didn’t know what we were doing,” Douglas Lute, a three-star Army general who served as a war czar for Afghanistan under the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, said in a 2015 interview, according to the Post.
Lute was not available for comment.
The paper obtained the 2,000 pages of documents — including what it says are notes from more than 400 interviews with military commanders, diplomats and aid workers, as well as Afghan officials, that were part of a “lessons learned” project — after a three-year legal battle. The Post also said it obtained hundreds of memos by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
NBC News has not been able to independently review the documents and the White House, State Department and Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Post published the documents two days after U.S.-Taliban talks restarted, and compared them to the Pentagon Papers — a top-secret government study that was packed with damaging revelations about America’s conduct in the Vietnam War leaked to The New York Times and the Post in 1971.
The war in Afghanistan is America’s longest and has raged on for 18 years. America has had boots on the ground there since 2001, when U.S. forces toppled the Taliban regime for harboring Osama bin Laden, the architect behind the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
Since then, just under 2,300 American troops have died in the war-torn country. Between January 2009, when the United Nations began a systematic documentation of civilian casualties, and September this year, some 34,000 Afghan civilians died as a result of the armed conflict.
The head of the federal agency that conducted the interviews, John Sopko, declined to comment to NBC News in advance of the report's publication. But Sopko told the Post that the documents show “the American people have constantly been lied to.”
In one of the reported interviews, Army Col. Bob Crowley, who served as a senior counterinsurgency adviser to U.S. military commanders in 2013 and 2014, told government interviewers in 2016 that “every data point was altered to present the best picture possible.”
“Surveys, for instance, were totally unreliable but reinforced that everything we were doing was right and we became a self-licking ice cream cone,” the Post quoted him as saying.
The paper said that the documents showed that as the war dragged on, U.S. military commanders found it difficult to articulate whom they were fighting, let alone why.
“I have no visibility into who the bad guys are,” Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense under Bush, complained in a Sept. 8, 2003, memo, according to the Post.
Through a spokesperson, Rumsfeld declined to comment.
At the same time, in public those in charge of the war continued to emphasize that they were making progress, the paper reported.
Government officials would spin casualty counts and other figures to make it appear that troops and resources were having the desired effect, an unnamed senior National Security Council official is quoted as saying in the documents.
“Attacks are getting worse? ‘That’s because there are more targets for them to fire at, so more attacks are a false indicator of instability,’” he reportedly said, mimicking how the government would spin.

Lisa Page Speaks: ‘There’s No Fathomable Way I Have Committed Any Crime at All’
The Daily Beast December 2, 2019

The IG's investigation examined thousands of text messages exchanged using FBI-issued cell phones between Strzok and Lisa Page, with whom he was having an affair. She was also a trial attorney on Mueller's team.
Devlin Barrett from The Washington Post alleged Strzok and Page had been using the backdrop of discussing the Clinton investigation as a cover for their personal communications during an affair.

He's Bill or Billy or Mac or Buddy
And he's plain ugly to me
And I wonder if he's ever had a day of fun in his whole
life
We are drinking beer at noon on Tuesday
In a bar that faces a giant car wash
The good people of the world are washing their cars
On their lunch break, hosing and scrubbing
As best they can in skirts in suits
They drive their shiny Datsuns and Buicks
Back to the phone company, the record store too
Well, they're nothing like Billy and me, cause
[Chorus]
All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one

[collected by me, Kerry Burgess, from internet:] Myths and Superstitions Around Solar Eclipses
Solar eclipses have caused fear, inspired curiosity and have been associated with myths, legends and superstitions throughout history. Even today, an eclipse of the Sun is considered a bad omen in many cultures.
Ancient cultures tried to understand why the Sun temporarily vanished from the Sky, so they came up with various reasons for what caused a solar eclipse.
Angry Sun
The ancient Greeks believed that a solar eclipse was a sign of angry gods and that it was the beginning of disasters and destruction.
