70,000 Tons of Battleship Terror: How the Biggest Battleship Ever Committed Suicide
The Japanese Yamato had well-earned esteem.
by Kyle Mizokami
The decision sealed the fate of the battleship Yamato and its crew
It and its sister, Musashi
The destruction of Yamato was inevitable even as far back as the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was clear that the age of the aircraft carrier had already superseded the battleship, but the insistence of battleship-minded general officers to cling to obsolete military technology undermined Japan’s conduct of the war and sent thousands of Japanese sailors needlessly to their deaths. The story of the Yamato is a warning to all armed forces that the march of war technology is merciless and unsentimental.

When Tavener showed me that video back in July 2002, I told Vince later that I wanted to kick his ass but it would as easy as beating up a little girl and I didn't find any thing comforting about that.

USS Gerald R. Ford
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is the lead ship of her class of United States Navy aircraft carriers. The ship is named after the 38th President of the United States, Gerald Ford, whose World War II naval service included combat duty aboard the light aircraft carrier Monterey in the Pacific Theater.
Construction began on 11 August 2005, when Northrop Grumman held a ceremonial steel cut for a 15-ton plate that forms part of a side shell unit of the carrier. The keel of Gerald R. Ford was laid down on 13 November 2009. She was christened on 9 November 2013. Gerald R. Ford entered the fleet replacing the decommissioned USS Enterprise (CVN-65), which ended her 51 years of active service in December 2012. Originally scheduled for delivery in 2015, Gerald R. Ford was delivered to the Navy on 31 May 2017 and formally commissioned by President Donald Trump on 22 July 2017.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_%28nuclear_propulsion%29
Project Orion (nuclear propulsion)
Project Orion was the first engineering design study of a spacecraft powered by nuclear pulse propulsion
Reaction mass for Orion would have been built into the bombs or dropped between 'pulses' to provide thrust.
The smallest 4000 ton model planned for ground launch from Jackass Flats, Nevada had each blast add 30 mph (50 km/h) to the craft's velocity. A graphite based oil was to be sprayed on the pusher plate before each explosion to prevent ablation of the pusher plate. This sequence would be repeated thousands of times, like an atomic pogo stick.
Orion's potential performance was stunning, at least compared to today's chemical or even other nuclear designs. Jerry Pournelle, who is acquainted with the project and its ex-team leader Freeman Dyson, has been quoted as saying that a single mission could have provided us with a large permanent moon base.[citation needed] Alternatively an Orion could reach Pluto and return to Earth inside of a year. Single stage to Mars and back also seemed to be possible.[citation needed]

653 - Remarks on Arrival at Jacksonville Naval Air Station, Florida.
November 2nd, 1975
Admiral Green, Captain Bernstein, Mayor Tanzler, Senator Chiles, Congress. man Burke, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:
First, I am deeply grateful for the warm welcome by Admiral Green and all of you from the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. I am most appreciative, on behalf of Mrs. Ford and myself, that so many of you have come out on a Sunday on this occasion.
As all of you know, I am in the process of having further very important meetings with President Sadat of Egypt. It is quite interesting, in my judgment, that I am meeting this afternoon with a man who represents a country whose history goes back literally centuries and centuries and centuries.
And at the same time, I am in a part of our country where we have some contrast between the old and the new. Jacksonville is a relatively modern city, historically, and certainly a very progressive city in our development of our great country.
But not far from here we have the oldest city in the United States--St. Augustine. So, in a relatively small part of this great country, we have a history that goes back from the very beginning and a community that represents. progress and tremendous enthusiasm and drive.
I believe this shows the diversity of America. And this diversity in this great country is one of our strengths as we meet the challenges both at home and abroad.
But we cannot, in this country, solve our problems at home or meet our commitments internationally if we don't have a strong national defense program. It is vitally important for peace that we have a national defense program second to none.
All of you at the naval air station in Jacksonville perform a great service in that regard. I know of the missions and responsibilities that you have here. You have the helicopter antisubmarine warfare unit that does a tremendous job. You have the long-range naval capability in the antisubmarine warfare area. You have nuclear-powered naval vessels.
This naval air station is a vital part of our total national security capability, and what you do here protects 214 million Americans. And on behalf of them, I thank you for your contribution.
A long, long time ago, I was a part of the Navy. I was very proud of that association for some 47 months. I learned a lot. I hope I contributed a little. But I know from firsthand experiences the trials and tribulations of serving in our uniformed services.
The men and women who serve do a superb job. But the wives and the children of men in service--Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard-are likewise making a great contribution, because I know of the sacrifices they make over the years in performing their part of this service. And' I thank them for what I know they do.
Let me say, in conclusion, that the meetings that I am having today and the ones that I had earlier in the week with President Sadat relate to a better and more peaceful world. But I can go and have these discussions, these talks from a position of strength, and all of you are a very vital and important part of that strength.
So, it makes my job easier, it makes our country more secure to know that we have people like you serving in our national security forces.
Thank you very, very much.
Note: The President spoke at 11:25 a.m. In his opening remarks, he referred to Rear Adm. Norman Green, USN, commander of the Jacksonville Naval bases, and Capt. Karl Bernstein, USN, commanding officer of Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

I made those four flights in and out of the comet but the first trip out ended in disaster because I was almost free and clear and then I jinked away from one speeding rock and slammed right into another speeding rock. My ship was completely destroyed. I was knocked out again and I drifted there for a while before I finally came back to consciousness. I had no idea how I was going to get back to the mother ship. I could see it far off in the distance but I had no way of getting back to it. Among the rubble of my destroyed small spaceship I found a fire extinquisher and I used that to kick me back to the larger ship and I cannot begin to describe how lucky I was to make it back to the ship. I had a spare small spaceship and loaded up again with the bombs and I made three successful trips in and out of the comet. I got back to my large spaceship and traveled away from the comet for over a day and then I remotely detonated the bombs on 7/4/1976. The rest is history.

Kerry Burgess, excerpt from my private journal: 10/19/2006 12:43 PM
I feel as though there are more details trying to surface in my mind about the trip to Saturn. I think the basis of the event is based on some thoughts I was having a few months ago. It was when I was still thinking Mars was in my future instead of actually in my past. I was having thoughts of a problem with my spacecraft and I was not going to make it back to Earth because I was going to run out of oxygen sometime between the time I left Mars to return to Earth. I was thinking that the situation was so hopeless by the time I got to Mars that ground control and I weren’t even talking that much anymore. But on Mars, I figured out how to extract oxygen from the ice and I was able to replenish my tanks. Over the past few days, I keep thinking about that scene from “The Abyss” where he is diving to find that nuclear bomb and disarm it. My thoughts suggest that some micro-meteroids hit my ship, not unlike in “Mission To Mars,” while I was outbound to intercept the comet that threatened the inner planets. I fixed the leak, reminiscent of me helping George Campbell fix a cooling system component of the search radar but which kept leaking for a long time because the welder couldn’t get the hole patched, but I lost a lot of oxygen before I got it fixed. Ground control told me to turn around and they had an alternate plan to try again. I rejected that plan because I was already out there and with that comet getting closer every day, there was no guarantee that a second attempt would fare any better. I might have told them that I was lucky to even have any oxygen left at that point and what if on the second trip, something even worse happens. They brought in my family, reminiscent of the scenes from “The Abyss” and “Deep Impact” to say goodbye and even to try to talk me into returning but I wasn’t coming back. I have thoughts that I even disabled the electronics that would allow ground control to automatically control the ship.
