Representative Adam Schiff posed a rhetorical question the other week that grated on the sensibility of anyone who remembers well the Watergate scandal.
“Where is Howard Baker?” Schiff asked plaintively.
Schiff was evoking the late Republican senator from Tennessee, who died in 2014, in a transparent plea to Republicans’ better selves. Ostensibly, Baker, the ranking minority member on the Senate’s Watergate Committee, put aside partisanship to join Democrats in a search for the truth. The proof lies in Baker’s very first question to John Dean, President Richard Nixon’s former White House counsel and the desk officer for the Watergate cover-up. On June 28, 1973, Baker famously asked Dean, “What did the president know and when did he know it?”

The Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities -- known colloquially as the Watergate Committee -- began holding hearings in 1973 to investigate "illegal, improper, or unethical activities" related to the 1972 presidential race between Richard Nixon and George McGovern.
The investigation was launched after a break-in at the Democratic National Committee's Headquarters at the Watergate hotel was connected to Nixon campaign aides.
Among the notable testimonies from the hearings was that of former White House counsel John Dean, who testified that President Nixon himself knew about the cover-up of the burglary at the DNC's headquarters.
On June 28, 1973, ranking minority member Howard Baker famously asked, "What did the president know and when did he know it?"

I also have these unexplained thoughts that I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. military, although I'm not sure which service, but I may have been in two different branches over time. I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. And the FBI. I have some kind of role with the FBI that I don't understand. If there is such a title as Senior Special Agent, that is probably my position with the FBI. There are probably many people that augment the national security forces, but for me, there is something unique and additional to my arrangement. Something I haven't figured out how to articulate yet.

My second Christmas in a homeless shelter and they hand out these gifts to homeless people to, I guess, make them feel less like the forgotten people. For me, it just serves as a reminder of how forgotten am I.

1954 Army-McCarthy Hearings
During the peak of the Red Scare, when Americans worried about the spread of world communism, Wisconsin Sen. Joseph McCarthy heightened people's fears with his allegations that hundreds of Communists had infiltrated the State Department.
Using his platform as chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, McCarthy conducted several hearings hoping to purge the federal government of alleged Communists and Soviet spies.
McCarthy then turned his accusations toward the Army, where he conducted nationally-televised hearings lasting from April until June of 1954.
On June 9, 1954, during one of the sessions, a dramatic moment occurred between McCarthy and Joseph Welch, the lawyer representing the Army in the hearings. McCarthy accused one of Welch's attorneys of harboring ties to a Communist organization.
"Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness," Welch shot back, defending his employee. "Let us not assassinate this lad further, senator. You have done enough."
