The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM or USSOC) is the Unified Combatant Command charged with overseeing the various Special Operations Commands (SOC or SOCOM) of each branch of the U.S. military. The command is part of the U.S. Department of Defense. When Special Operations Forces (SOF) of different branches are used for the same operation, USSOCOM acts as the Joint Command Center (JCC) of all the forces used in the operation. USSOCOM is headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. The idea of a unified special operations command had its origins in the aftermath of Operation Eagle Claw, the disastrous attempted rescue of hostages at the American embassy in Iran. The ensuing investigation, chaired by Adm. James L. Holloway III, the retired Chief of Naval Operations, cited command and control and inter-service coordination as significant factors in the failure of the mission.
Further problems in Grenada in Operation Urgent Fury involving communications problems, training coordination, and equipment commonalities increased the visibility of the problems of inter-service standardization.
A significant part of the problem was identified as related to attempts to use standard-force-issue equipment (radios, helicopters, aircraft, surface craft) for the more demanding special operations, and the lack of support from the various services for developing and equipping their special operations forces with equipment suitable to the missions.
The Goldwater-Nichols Act of 1986 would eventually lead to the establishment of USSOCOM on April 16, 1987.

April 25, 1980, was a defining moment for the American people and Special Operations. At 7 a.m., a somber President announced to our nation and the world the tragic news of Desert One. President Jimmy Carter announced a secret hostage rescue mission had failed; eight American servicemen were dead and several others were seriously injured.
Out of the ashes of Desert One rose U.S. Special Operations Command.
The U.S. Special Operations Command was formed April 16, 1987, with responsibility to organize, train and equip U.S. Special Operations Forces from the Army, Navy and Air Force.
The U.S. military DD-214 form that I received from the official personnel records center contains a primary specialty number of 1189, which was created for this official federal undercover identity I am still using. Subtracting 59 from 1189 produces 1130, which is the billet number for a regular commissioned U.S. Navy officer with the U.S. Navy SEAL qualification. The middle sequence of my Social Security Number is '17,' where "Q" is the 17th letter of the alphabet and it is also the U.S. Navy AQD code for Special Warfare. My rank on that official federal undercover document is E-5 because I was actually an O-5 at the time it was created and I have since been promoted to the ranks of U.S. Navy Admiral. The 'Mailing Address' field on that official federal undercover DD-214 points to Thedia Newman Draper's address at Highway 59 and Constitution Avenue. The 'Record Of Service' does not add up and points back to my 1982 commissioning date from the U.S. Naval
Academy. Also, why would that form, created as part of my artificial identity, have typographic errors on it?

NASA to search attics for missing moon-walk tapes

WASHINGTON — Red-faced because the best pictures of its glory days are missing, NASA said Tuesday it was launching an official search for more than 13,000 original tapes of the historic Apollo moon missions.
What's missing are the never-before-broadcast, clear, original videos — not the grainy, converted pictures the world watched on television more than three decades ago.
The tapes aren't lost, says the NASA official in charge of the search. But he doesn't know where they are.
Most likely they are somewhere at the sprawling Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., which misplaced the tapes originally. But they also could be stored somewhere else.
The original video, taken directly from the moon and beamed to deep-space network observatories in Australia, has never been seen by the general public or even NASA officials.

Notorious is the fourth album by Duran Duran.
The making of Notorious during 1986 was a difficult time for Duran Duran. The band had planned for a much-needed break after the success of their 1984 world tour, but all of the band members had ended up working on one of two side projects -- the hard-rock collective Power Station in early 1985, and the atmospheric Arcadia project in late '85/early '86. When it came time to record the new Duran Duran album, they found that drummer Roger Taylor was too exhausted to continue in the music business, while guitarist Andy Taylor had developed a taste for the spotlight, as well as for a harder, more guitar-heavy sound than the rest of Duran Duran was prepared to pursue.
During this period, the band also began to act as their own management, having dismissed brothers Paul and Michael Berrow who had shepherded them through their first five years. Arrangements for the forthcoming "Strange Behaviour" tour which kicked off in March 1987, as well as the tensions with Taylor, are recounted in the documentary Three To Get Ready.
The band gradually coaxed Andy Taylor back from Los Angeles to the UK in order to begin playing on the album, but personal and creative disputes continued and much of the communication was carried on by lawyers, until Taylor finally withdrew from the band. It is rumoured that Andy went so far as to try and stop the band from continuing with using the Duran Duran name; since that time the band ensured that the name is wholly owned by co-founding member Nick Rhodes.
During this time, Andy began jamming with members of Los Angeles pop band Missing Persons who were in the midst of breaking up. Missing Persons guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, noting that Taylor didn't intend to return to Duran Duran, offered his services to them instead. They hired him as a sessions and tour guitarist; he would later become a full member of the band in 1989.

Blue Sky (1994)
Hank Marshall is a tough, square-jawed, straitlaced Army engineer and nuclear science expert, assigned to help conduct weapons-testing in 1950's America. Hank has become a thorn in the side of the Army, though, for a couple of very different reasons. He is an outspoken opponent of atmospheric testing, though his superiors hold contrary views and want to squelch his concerns...and his reports. The other problem is his wife, Carly. She is voluptuous and volatile, wreaking havoc in his personal life and stirring up intrigue at each new Army base.
Carly Marshall is the mentally unbalanced wife of Hank. He's in the military and responsible for monitoring atomic tests. Carly's antics (she's fun loving) have forced her and the family (two daughters) to move from one military base to another. At a new base in Alabama, Carly gets up to her usual tricks.

During a demonstration of a Tibetan sand painting ceremony, Draper leapt onto the service desk in the Fiction section brandishing a .45 semi-automatic firearm and claiming to have a bomb. He ordered nearby people into a nearby conference room, which included librarian Gwen Page, six civilians, and police officer Lt. Lloyd Prescott, who offered to change places with the last person entering the conference room. Lt. Prescott was in plain clothes at the time and had his pistol hidden on his person. Page managed to inconspicuously slip several hostages out a second door in the conference room before Draper entered the room himself, reducing the number of hostages to nine, before staying in the room herself.

Bomb-carrying hostage-taker killed in Salt Lake City library
SALT LAKE CITY - A man carrying a bomb who took 18 people hostage yesterday at the Salt Lake City Library was shot dead by a deputy who sneaked in among the hostages. No one else was hurt.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's Deputy Lt. Lloyd Prescott was teaching a class for police officers in a room adjacent to the one where the gunman was guarding the hostages, Lt. Marty Vuyk said.
"He made a super move. He became the last hostage by walking in the room and closing the door behind him," Vuyk said.
Prescott shot the gunman four times in the chest, then wrestled him to the ground, police said. All the hostages were freed.
The gunman, identified as Clifford Lynn Draper, died at LDS Hospital, Vuyk said.
The photo I saw of this officer on the local news reminded me of Kirk Tavener, who was my manager at Microsoft for several years that I worked there with my official United States federal undercover identity.

Seattle police officer dies after fall into water

A Seattle police officer who fell into the ship canal was pronounced dead this afternoon at Harborview Medical Center.
Jack Lone, an 18-year-veteran assigned to the Seattle Police Harbor Patrol, was on shore this morning, working with a partner trying to tie up a tug boat that had become loose and was drifting, according to police. At some point, the partner, who was on the tug, noticed that Lone had fallen in.
The partner called for help, quickly suited up and then dove into the water, eventually finding Lone submerged in about six feet of water. He had been without air for 8-10 minutes, according to police.
Lone was taken to Harborview, where he was pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m.
Lone was the first Harbor Patrol officer to die in the line of duty since the unit was founded in the early 1900s, police said. He had been assigned to the unit for five years.

Pahlavi had replaced the democratically-elected prime minister Mohammad Mossadegh, who had attempted to overthrow the Shah and was feared by the Americans and British to be too close with the Soviet Union. They held 63 U.S. diplomats and three other U.S. citizens hostage until January 20, 1981. Of those captured, 52 were held hostage until the conclusion of the crisis 444 days later.[1] These actions are often considered a violation of the
long-standing principle of international law that diplomats are immune from arrest and that diplomatic compounds such as embassies are considered the absolute sovereign territory of the occupying country as granted by the host country, and as such, hostile incursions into the compound by elements of the host country are akin to acts of war.
The ordeal reached its climax when the United States military attempted a rescue operation on April 24, 1980. The failure of Operation Eagle Claw resulted in the deaths of five United States Air Force Airmen and three U.S. Marines. Some political analysts believe the crisis was the primary reason for U.S. President Jimmy Carter's defeat in the U.S. presidential election in November 1980.[2]
The crisis ended with the signing of the Algiers Accords in Algeria on January 19, 1981. The hostages were formally released into United States custody the following day. The release took place just minutes after Ronald Reagan was officially sworn in as Carter’s successor.

Whittington (born March 3, 1927) is an American lawyer, real estate investor, and political figure from Austin, Texas who received international media attention on February 11, 2006, when he was shot in the face by Vice President Dick Cheney while hunting quail with two women on a ranch in Corpus Christi, Texas.
On February 11, 2006, Whittington, a Bush-Cheney campaign contributor, was accidentally shot and injured by U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney during a quail hunting trip, at a ranch in south Texas owned by Katharine Armstrong. Most of the damage from the shotgun blast was to the right side of his body, including damage to his face, chest, and neck. He was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Months of stalking end with 2 dead at UW
Rebecca Griego called her ex-boyfriend Jonathan Rowan "a psycho from the past." He wouldn't stop calling her office at the University of Washington. When she no longer would answer the phone, he harassed her sister and threatened to kidnap her dogs.
On Monday morning, Rowan found Griego alone in her fourth-floor office in Gould Hall and fatally shot her before killing himself.
