WASHINGTON – Interior Secretary Gale Norton resigned today after five years in President Bush's Cabinet and at a time when her agency is part of a lobbying scandal over Indian gaming licenses.
In a letter to Bush, Norton said she the resignation would be effective at the end of March.
"Now I feel it is time for me to leave this mountain you gave me to climb, catch my breath, then set my sights on new goals to achieve in the private sector," she said in the two-page resignation letter.

Slain deputy had become White Center's "Superman"

Giving up a successful career in law is an unusual route to becoming a beat cop.
But King County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox was an unusually idealistic man, say those who knew him. Frustrated with criminals beating the legal system, he left his job as a deputy prosecutor to patrol the streets in White Center, the high-crime neighborhood near where he grew up.
To business owners and residents, he became a "Superman" who was single-handedly making the streets safer and the neighborhood better. He became so deeply involved in community issues that he was elected president of the local council. To his family, he was a man who had found new joy since he and his wife, Maria, adopted a baby, Bronson, who turned 1 in October.
Now the neighborhood is mourning after Cox, 46, was shot and killed early Saturday.
Local bartender Cheryl Moss said Cox did more than anyone else to clean up drug dealing and prostitution: "He was our Superman. And now our Superman's dead."

I was in my 3rd year at the U.S. Naval Academy when I launched with the first flight of the space shuttle. The next thing I remembered was waking up in the hospital. I had a parachute on but still had a hard landing and was knocked unconscious after falling out at over 200 miles per hour.

Ashcroft bows out of probe into leak of agent's name

WASHINGTON — Attorney General John Ashcroft yesterday bowed out of the politically charged investigation into who leaked the name of a covert CIA officer, an action that suggests the probe could touch people in the Bush administration who have ties to Ashcroft.
Patrick Fitzgerald, the U.S. attorney in Chicago, was named as a special prosecutor to handle the investigation. Fitzgerald will report to Deputy Attorney General James Comey but was given "the power and authority to make whatever prosecutorial judgment he needs," Comey said.
