Mother allegedly drowns her 5 kids
HOUSTON - A 36-year-old mother with a history of depression, who once attempted suicide, apparently drowned her five children in a bathtub yesterday morning before calling police, authorities said.
Officers sent to the house were met at the door by the woman, her clothes still damp. Four of the children were found on a bed under a sheet, police said. The fifth - the eldest child, a 7-year-old boy - was in the bathtub. The youngest child was a 6-month-old girl.
The mother, Andrea Yates, was taken into custody at her home in Clear Lake, a Houston suburb near NASA's Johnson Space Center, and later was charged with multiple counts of capital murder.

Army report reveals more details about ambush of Lynch unit

WASHINGTON — When Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch's lost maintenance company was ambushed in Nasiriyah, Iraq, on March 23, many of the unit's soldiers were unable to defend themselves because their weapons malfunctioned, according to an Army report of the incident.
The report, scheduled to be released this week, adds new details to the circumstances reported last month by The Washington Post, which described how the 18-vehicle convoy got lost in the southern Iraqi city after its company commander, Capt. Troy King, did not receive word that the larger column it was following had changed routes. The convoy then made several navigational errors, which required the slow, lumbering vehicles to make two U-turns in the middle of hostile territory.

It may not have been the "shock-and-awe" show promised by United States forces poised to invade Iraq.
But to anyone watching television, the swiftness with which yesterday's airstrike in Baghdad was executed, disseminated and explained was a heck of a dress rehearsal.
The White House and news organizations worked in well-oiled tandem. The time elapsed from when the bombing run took place to when anchors were correctly summarizing it — barely a half-hour — gave new meaning to the concept of a fast news cycle.
News that air-raid sirens were sounding over Baghdad broke at 6:37 p.m. Pacific Standard Time and 5:37 a.m. in Iraq.
By 6:41 p.m., CNN's senior Pentagon correspondent Jamie McIntyre had determined that it probably was not. Almost simultaneously, the White House said spokesman Ari Fleischer would make a brief statement.
One minute later — that's five minutes after explosions sounded over Baghdad — Fleischer appeared on camera to announce, "The opening stages of the disarmament of the Iraqi regime have begun" and that the president would speak at 10:15 p.m. (7:15 PST).

Opportunity Rover Begins Standing Up
NASA's Opportunity rover has untucked its front wheels and latched its suspension system in place - key steps in preparing to drive off its lander and onto Martian soil. Opportunity has also begun using its infrared sensing instrument to detect the composition of rocks and soils from its current, stationary position. This information will help scientists determine which targets of interest should be examined when the rover begins moving. Meanwhile, halfway around Mars, Opportunity's twin, Spirit, continues on the mend from a computer memory problem that struck it a week ago.
With both Spirit and Opportunity now on Mars, researchers with NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission can now begin to search for clues about the history of water on Mars. Because life as we know it requires water to survive, understanding the history of water on Mars can tell scientists a great deal about the potential for past or present life on the Red Planet.

Healthier Spirit Gets Back to Work While Opportunity Prepares to Roll

NASA's Spirit rover on Mars has resumed taking pictures as engineers continue work on restoring its health. Meanwhile, Spirit's twin, Opportunity, extended its rear wheels backward to driving position last night as part of preparations to roll off its lander, possibly as early as overnight Saturday-to-Sunday.
Spirit shot and transmitted a picture yesterday to show the position of its robotic arm. "The arm is exactly where we expected," said Jennifer Trosper, mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. It is still extended in the same position as when the rover developed communication and computer problems on Jan. 22. A mineral-identifying instrument called a Moessbauer spectrometer, at the tip of the arm, is positioned at a rock nicknamed Adirondack.
Engineers have been carefully nursing Spirit back toward full operations for the past week. They are sending commands today for the rover to begin making new scientific observations again, starting with panoramic camera images of nearby rocks. Today's commands also tell the rover to send data stored by two instruments since they took readings on Adirondack last week -- the Moessbauer spectrometer and the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer, which identifies the chemical elements in a target.
"We know we still have some engineering work to do, but we think we understand the problem well enough to do science in parallel with that work," Trosper said. Several attempts to get a full trace of data related to the rover's problem have only partially succeeded. The engineers might choose to reformat the rover's flash memory in the next few days.

Mars Rovers Going The Extra Mile
Both of NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers completed their primary missions in April, but their extended missions are continuing to return exciting scientific results. After two months of traveling, Spirit finally reached the Columbia hills late last week. Spirit has already returned fascinating images of curiously eroded rocks that may be new pieces to the puzzle of the region's past.
Meanwhile, Opportunity continues to move into Endurance crater where its first target will be a flat-lying stone dubbed 'Tennessee'. Opportunity will inspect the rock using the spectrometers and microscopic imager on the rover's robotic arm.
Since landing on Mars, NASA's twin Mars Exploration Rovers have been searching for information about the history of water on Mars with great success. Spirit identified signs of repeated exposure to water on a rock inside Gusev Crater. Opportunity discovered evidence that it's own landing site, Meridiani Planum, was once drenched with water. Because life as we know it requires water to survive, understanding the history of water on Mars can tell scientists a great deal about the potential for past or present life on the Red Planet.
