I also have these unexplained thoughts that I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. military, although I'm not sure which service, but I may have been in two different branches over time. I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too. I have these thoughts too that I was captured by enemy forces at some point and tortured while in captivity.

The word apocalypse in Greek means "unveiling". In John's apocalypse, the book of Revelation, he refers to the "unveiling" or "revelation" of Jesus Christ as Messiah. This term has been downgraded in common usage to refer to the end of the world. But it is more accurate to interpret the term "end of the world", as we see in the King James Version of the Bible, as the "end of the age". The word translated as "world" is actually the Greek word "eon" or "age".

Bank President: I remember last November you spent the days reading campaign buttons on customers' lapels. You will recall the lady who took exception to this and tried to hit you with her umbrella.
Mr. Bemis: Yes, I remember that. I never got a chance to tell her that I was only looking to see who she voted for.

Adama: Ah, yes, the joy of living. You were aboard the Galactica. You didn't see them down there; their faces. The old, the young. Desperate. Begging - screaming - for a chance to come aboard. David Whiffen
Intrigued by the possibilities of wartime radar, he went on to be dean of science at Newcastle University
David Jones

The physical chemist and former provice chancellor of Newcastle University, David Whiffen, who has died aged 80, combined deep theoretical understanding with a sense of the practical. His concern was radiation - including light: how it is absorbed by a sample, and what this tells us about the molecules of which the sample is made.
Beginning with infra-red sources, he was soon captivated by the powerful, monochromatic, tunable electronic sources invented for radar transmitters during the second world war. At the time, he was a young researcher in infra-red spectroscopy, working under Harold Thompson at Oxford University. One of his tasks was to study the fuel in the tanks of crashed or captured German aircraft, which might reveal what oilfields the Germans were using for their fuel, or whether they were converting coal to aviation spirit. After the war, Whiffen spent a year at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in America.

He then returned to Oxford, and, in 1949, took a lecturership at Birmingham University. There, his infra-red research led him to a good understanding of the aromatic benzene nucleus, crucial to much organic chemistry. He also worked on electron-spin resonance spectrometry. This new technique had an electronic source, and could study many incomplete molecules, the free radicals used in making polymers - another art greatly accelerated by the war. Whiffen worked out the electron-spin resonance signal of a free radical in a crystal lattice.
In 1959, he was invited to join the basic physics division (later, the division of molecular sciences) of the national physical laboratory at Teddington. In 1966, his election as a fellow to the Royal Society confirmed the impact of his work. In 1968, he became professor of physical chemistry at Newcastle, where he developed the microwave and millimetre-wave spectroscopy of many gases and vapours.
A further adventure started in 1972. Prompted by Martyn Poliakoff and Jim Turner, of the inorganic chemistry department, Whiffen helped to initiate the spin-flip laser project, by which a semiconducting crystal in a variable magnetic field was to provide a strong tunable infra-red source. Sadly, this never worked properly, and his dream of double resonance experiments, with infra-red and microwave beams hitting the same sample, remains unrealised. He was dean of science at Newcastle from 1974 to 1977, and pro-vice chancellor from 1980 to 1983. He retired to Bridgewater, in Somerset, in 1985.
Whiffen was not an easy man to know. He scaled the academic heights by sheer brilliance. Perhaps his most effective role was as head of a department. The staff churn out papers, of whatever worth, to advance their own careers; the head implicitly gives them his imprimatur. He stops the rot, if rot there be. Whiffen certainly stopped any rot in the physical chemistry department at Newcastle. He had such an insightful mind that everybody was afraid of him.
Being brighter than almost everyone around could have been tricky; but Whiffen made a good marriage to his wife Jean, fathered four sons (who survive him), and faced his fellow man in least one human arena, the squash court. He played a mean game, though one competitor recalls an impromptu dissertation on molecular quadrupole moments during a break in the action.
This independent personal style could serve him well. When Whiffen arrived at Newcastle, Professor Clemo, of the organic chemistry department, told him: "People are saying you should not have come." David merely raised his eyebrows; possibly agreeing that people were saying that, or maybe that, indeed, he should not have come. The pugnacious Clemo was taken aback.
Years later, I built a fake perpetual-motion machine in the department. Perpetual motion is one of the classic impossibilities of science; the machine was, in effect, a conjuring trick designed to confuse the scientific intellect. It should have baffled a formal scientific reasoner like Whiffen. But in a private document, he considered all possible ways of applying torque to a wheel, and deduced the correct principle. He even proposed a mechanism, which the maker had tried and discarded as unreliable.
Once, he was very late for a departmental dinner. Apologising fulsomely, he explained: "We were looking for a minus sign." That is how he thought.

Perry Mason: It has been suggested that the painting was completed by another artist after Culross' death.
Dr. Vincent Kenyon: Are you Mrs. Culross' attorney? A very emotional woman, Mr. Mason. Totally ignorant of art. This canvas is genuine, from first stroke to last.
Perry Mason: You seem to be an expert on Culross, Dr. Kenyon.
Dr. Vincent Kenyon: Oh, I should be. I was the first to recognize his talent.
Perry Mason: You'd have no objection to our verifying your observation scientifically?
Dr. Vincent Kenyon: Well, inexpert handling of a valuable canvas is really quite out of the question.
