A farewell to Princeton seniors

Last Thursday night, a friend of mine came up with the topic for this week's column. It concerns the collective group whom on campus we refer to as "Seniors." Perhaps you've seen them around, throwing a frisbee in your courtyard, reading the newest Danielle Steele, or starting weekend festivities a bit early, say Tuesday afternoon.

In some ways, now is the best time to write a column about seniors. Most of them are out of the carrels and are actually reading newspapers.

Benz Patent-Motorwagen

From Wikipedia

The Benz Patent-Motorwagen ("patent motorcar"), built in 1885 by the German Carl Benz, is widely regarded as the world's first practical automobile, a self-propelled vehicle for carrying people, and first car put into series production. It was patented and unveiled in 1886. The original cost of the vehicle in 1886 was 600 imperial German marks, approximately 150 US dollars (equivalent to $4,524 in 2021).

Karl's wife Bertha demonstrated its feasibility in a trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim in August 1888, shortly before it became the first commercially available automobile in history in the late summer of 1888.

KIRK: Time we faced the unpleasant facts.

SPOCK: First, I believe we have about a week before McCoy arrives, but we can't be certain.

KIRK: Arrives where? Honolulu, Boise, San Diego? Why not Outer Mongolia, for that matter?

SPOCK: There is a theory. There could be some logic to the belief that time is fluid, like a river, with currents, eddies, backwash.

KIRK: And the same currents that swept McCoy to a certain time and place might sweep us there, too.

SPOCK: Unless that is true, Captain, we have no hope. Frustrating. Locked in here is the place and moment of his arrival, even the images of what he did. If only I could tie this tricorder in with the ship's computers for just a few moments.

KIRK: Couldn't you build some form of computer aid here?

SPOCK: In this zinc-plated vacuum-tubed culture?

KIRK: Yes, well, it would pose an extremely complex problem in logic, Mister Spock. Excuse me. I sometimes expect too much of you.

by me, Kerry Burgess, typed after being released from the USA Veterans Affairs psychiatric hospital enduring many months sitting in a grungy two-computer room in a homeless shelter on the waterfront in downtown Seattle:

by me, Kerry Burgess, excerprs from my private journal: 12/27/06 12:07 PM

As I have written, I have been thinking that I started at Princeton University on September 2, 1965.

So I started to talk and read very early and I also began to develop other skills very early. Through some process that I do not yet recall well enough to describe, I was allowed to secretly compete at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, and I won several gold medals. From that accomplishment, I was considered the best candidate to go out into space in the next decade, where 10 years is a very, very short time to have to consider that a plan had to be created and then carried out to travel into deep space and to carry enough nuclear weapons to divert a very large mountain of rock that was screaming towards Earth.

They could have trained older people to go out and carry out the mission but a factor about me was that I was still going to be young enough that, if I survived the actual mission, then there was going to be a good chance that I would be able to lead a normal life without being debilitated from living in the weightlessness of deep space for over a year.

Back in the early 1960's, there was hardly anything really known about space travel. The first American astronaut did not go into space until May 1961 and that was only for a few minutes. I was going to have to live and work in deep space for well over a year. Who could even begin to imagine the kinds of problems I would suffer from that kind of extreme environment.

So I became the candidate for the mission because I was the best choice. As I mentioned, I had already graduated from Princeton in 1969 with a medical degree. I started there on 9/2/1965, at the age of 6 years, and I started actually as an instructor of graduate students. I could already pass all the requirements from the medical degree but they decided that the basis for my graduation would be if I could teach a group of graduate students well enough that they could pass the tests

Quayle, Gore Set Themes For Last Weeks -- Stockdale Never Answers Own Query: `Why Am I Here?'

Times News Services

It may be remembered more for its furious, even nasty partisanship than for any impact it might have on the outcome of 1992 presidential election.

But yesterday's clash of the running mates did reveal that the campaigns have decided on lines of attack for the next three weeks: President Bush against Bill Clinton's character and tax policies; Clinton against Bush's economic record; and Ross Perot against Washington politicians and their deficit.

In yesterday's debate, Vice President Dan Quayle and Sen. Al Gore Jr. of Tennessee did a better job articulating their campaigns' basic messages than President Bush and Arkansas Gov. Clinton did in Sunday's low-energy affair.

In the crossfire, retired Vice Adm. James Stockdale often seemed lost - a civilian who had wandered into a private war.

The succession of sharp clashes between Quayle and Gore over taxes, trust and character gave this debate a much rougher edge than the decorous first encounter between the presidential contenders. But traditionally, the vice-presidential debates have only minimally affected the outcome of presidential campaigns.

An ABC poll taken immediately after the debate showed Clinton leading Bush 47 percent to 38 percent, with Perot trailing at 12 percent. Those figures were virtually unchanged from a poll completed before the debate.

If yesterday's debate has any impact, some observers said, it may be to diminish the momentum Perot generated Sunday.

Although Stockdale's earthy directness occasionally echoed Perot's own success at knifing through his opponents' stilted political rhetoric, more often he appeared uncertain and overmatched; for long stretches in the free-form debate he disappeared entirely. Stockdale, a senior research fellow at the conservative Hoover Institution at Stanford University, never seemed to entirely answer the question he posed at the outset: "Why am I here?"
