WASHINGTON, June 24 — A team of federal prosecutors interviewed President Bush in the Oval Office for more than an hour on Thursday as part of their investigation into whether administration officials illegally disclosed to a journalist the identity of an undercover C.I.A. officer, the White House said.
Mr. Bush was not under oath as he answered questions posed by the prosecutors, who were led by Patrick J. Fitzgerald, a United States attorney who is in charge of the investigation. Scott McClellan, the White House spokesman, said that Mr. Bush had retained a lawyer whom he had previously consulted about the case, James E. Sharp of Washington, and that Mr. Sharp was present during the questioning.
Mr. Fitzgerald appears to be moving into the final stages of the investigation, suggesting that he could reach a decision during the heat of the presidential campaign on whether to charge anyone and whether to issue a public report on the investigation if he does not file charges.
