The Aegis combat system is an integrated weapons system used by the United States Navy. It is both an integrated single ship system and a ship-to-ship network. The Aegis combat system is one of the most advanced and most capable defense systems currently in use.
The Aegis weapon system is an advanced combat, control, and information system that uses powerful computers and radars to track and destroy enemy targets. It is the most advanced modern combat system and is the first fully integrated combat system built to defend against air, surface, and subsurface threats.
The Aegis Weapons System comprises the SPY-1 Radar, MK 99 Fire Control System and ORTS, MK 41 VLS, the Command and Decision Suite, and SM-2 Standard Missile systems. Shipboard torpedo and naval gunnery systems are also integrated. The Aegis combat system is controlled by an advanced, automatic detect-and-track, multi-function three-dimensional passive electronically scanned array radar, the AN/SPY-1. Known as "the Shield of the Fleet", the SPY high-powered (four megawatt) radar is able to perform search, tracking, and missile guidance functions simultaneously with a track capacity of well over 100 targets at more than 100 nautical miles (190 km).
The Aegis system uses missile uplink using the AN/SPY-1 radar for midcourse guidance of Standard missiles during engagements, but still requires the AN/SPG-62 radar for terminal guidance. This means that with proper scheduling of intercepts, a large number of targets can be engaged simultaneously.

Fire Controlman (abbreviated as FC) is a United States Navy occupational rating.
Fire Controlmen (FC) provide system employment recommendations; perform organizational and intermediate maintenance on digital computer equipment, subsystems, and systems; operate and maintain combat and weapons direction systems, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missile systems, and gun fire control systems at the organizational and intermediate level; inspect, test, align, and repair micro/minicomputers and associated peripheral equipment, data conversion units, data display equipment, data link terminal equipment, print devices, and system related equipment; make analysis for detailed systems, computer programs, electronics, and electronic casualty control; and operate associated built-in and external test equipment; load, initialize, and run preprogrammed diagnostic, performance and testing routines for digital computer equipment, digital subsystems, digital systems, and overall combat systems.
FCs typically operate weapon systems on-board surface combatant ships. They are trained in the repair, maintenance, operation and employment of weapons such as the Tomahawk Missile System, the Close-In Weapons System, the 5"/54 caliber Mark 45 gun Weapon System and it's associated MK86 Gun Fire Control System Standard Missile System, Sea Sparrow Missile and Harpoon Missile Systems. These include their associated computer and sensor packages. Their job is somewhat unique in that they are trained to troubleshoot and repair their systems, as well as operate them. These responsibilities are typically split up between different ratings for various types of electronic equipment.
In essence, they "pull the trigger", to defend the ship from tactical threats, or to make an offense strike against a hostile target.
Another area of responsibility for FCs is the Aegis weapon system, which includes the most powerful search radar in the world, the SPY-1. Other areas for FCs are the MK99 Fire Control System and Aegis computer systems.

For more than four decades, the U.S. Navy has developed systems to protect itself from surface and air attacks. After the end of World War II, several generations of anti-ship missiles emerged as threats to the fleet. The first anti-ship missile to sink a combatant was a Soviet-built missile that sank an Israeli destroyer in October 1967. This threat was reconfirmed in April 1988 when two Iranian surface combatants fired on U.S. Navy ships and aircraft in the Persian Gulf. The resulting exchange of anti-ship missiles led to the destruction of an Iranian frigate and a corvette by U.S.-built Harpoon missiles.
The U.S. Navy’s defense against this threat relied on a strategy of gun and missile coordinated defense. Guns were supplemented in the late fifties by the first generation of guided missiles in ships and aircraft. By the late sixties, although these missiles continued to perform well, there was still a need to improve missile technology in order to match the ever-changing threat. To counter the newer enemy missile threat, the Advanced Surface Missile System (ASMS) was developed. ASMS was re-named AEGIS (after the mythological shield of Zeus) in December 1969.
The AEGIS system was designed as a total weapon system, from “detection” to “kill”. The heart of the AEGIS system is an advanced, automatic detect and track, multi-functional phased-array radar, the AN/SPY-1. This high-powered (four-megawatt) radar can perform search, track, and missile guidance functions simultaneously, with a capability of over 100 targets. The first system was installed on the test ship, USS Norton Sound (AVM-1) in 1973. Figure 2-6 shows the weapons and sensors on an AEGIS class cruiser.
The system’s core is a computer-based command and decision element. This interface enables the AEGIS combat system to operate simultaneously in anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, and anti-submarine warfare.
The AN/SPY-1 series radar system works with two fire control systems on AEGIS class ships: the Mk 99 Missile Fire Control System and the Mk 86 Gun Fire Control System (part of the Mk 34 Gun Weapon System). The Mk 86 GFCS is also found on SPRUANCE class destroyers and works with the Mk 91 Missile Fire Control System. We will discuss the Mk 91 MFCS in a later section.

NEAR KUT, Iraq, May 3 -- A specially trained Defense Department team, dispatched after a month of official indecision to survey a major Iraqi radioactive waste repository, today found the site heavily looted and said it was impossible to tell whether nuclear materials were missing.
The discovery at the Baghdad Nuclear Research Facility was the second since the end of the war in which a known nuclear cache was plundered extensively enough that authorities could not rule out the possibility that deadly materials had been stolen. The survey, conducted by a U.S. Special Forces detachment and eight nuclear experts from a Pentagon office called the Direct Support Team, appeared to offer fresh evidence that the war has dispersed the country's most dangerous technologies beyond anyone's knowledge or control.

Baghdad Nuclear Research Facility
The Baghdad Nuclear Research Facility adjacent to the Tuwaitha "Yellow Cake Factory" contains the remains of nuclear reactors bombed by Israel in 1981 and the United States in 1991. It was used as a storage facility for spent reactor fuel and industrial and medical wastes. The radioactive material would not be useful for a fission bomb, but could be used in a dirty bomb. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the facility was heavily looted by hundreds of Iraqis, though it is unclear what was taken.
The facility is surrounded by a sand berm four miles (6.4 km) around and 160 feet (50 m) high, and contained the French-built research reactor Osiraq, destroyed by Israel in 1981 before it went online.
On May 3, 2003, a detachment of U.S. Special Forces led by United States Navy Commander David Beckett and eight nuclear experts from the United States Department of Defense's Direct Support Team conducted a survey of the facility, finding the looting, similar to the situation in the nearby Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center.

Gates relinquishes CEO title

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates today said he was relinquishing the mantle of chief executive officer, turning over management of the world's most highly valued company to his No. 2, Steve Ballmer.
