Coming to the Microsoft campus was something of a unique experience, as we landed in a big helicopter and I was commenting that they probably think this is "Red Dawn" -- (laughter) -- or an invasion by aliens, coming in this large helicopter.

And at the same time that I mention this, there is also a gap that exists by some in this industry and our military. And it's gap that is not unique to this industry but I think is somewhat indicative of that in our country. There is a sense that in many places beyond this campus, from Sunnyvale to Silicon Valley to Silicon Alley, that there are some in the digital world who dismiss the importance of national security, that some soldiers in the high-tech revolution don't fully appreciate or understand the soldiers in camouflage, that tanks and guns are somehow rusty relics of the past and may be obsolete in the new information-based world that is going to carry us into the future.
I think of this because there is one Silicon Valley executive who said about as much in an interview that he granted to the New York Times columnist Tom Friedman. He said that: "We don't even care about Washington." He said: "Money is extracted from Silicon Valley and then wasted by Washington. And why would I care about wealth destroyers?"
I am not even going to bother turning around to see if there is any kind of receptivity behind my shoulder. (Laughter.)
But we do live in a world where the private-sector innovation is so powerful that it's tempting to view the world through that lens alone, where the intellectual property and the virtual assets of Yahoo! are more highly valued by Wall Street than the oil reserves and supertankers of Texaco. So I think it can be easy to forget that this global marketplace was neither created by magic nor will it be kept by marketing.
And I wanted to be here today because I believe that Microsoft does understand the crucial connection between our national security and our national prosperity. And Bill Gates a moment ago talked about the connection that we do in fact have.
You do work on information and issues that are of critical importance to us. Critical infrastructure is something that we have to devote more and more time and thought and resources to. We have a new initiative to train those who are departing service members for information technology careers. It's very important to us, as it is to you; and even your support for the restoration of the historical battleship Missouri. So I think you appreciate the connection perhaps more than others do.

The battleship Missouri is about to be decomissioned. Casey Ryback is Captain Adam's personal cook. And Ryback is always butting heads with the ship's XO Commander Krill but the Captain always intercedes. One day, after the President visits the Missouri, which is also the Captain's birthday, the Captain learns that a helicopter has been cleared to land on the ship by Commander Krill, which he was not informed of. When questioned Krill tells the Captain that it's a surprise for his birthday, the Captain then allows it. Later after another one of their scuffles, Krill has Ryback locked in the freezer. During the party, the rock band reveals themselves to be mercenaries, led by William Stranix, a CIA operative, who is in league with Krill to unload all of the ship's nuclear warheads. They lock up all of the crew and make preparations to remove the warheads. And Krill remembers Ryback, Stranix sends two of his men to take care of Ryback, only thing is that
Ryback took care of them. Upon discovering their bodies, Stranix deduces that Ryback is more than a cook. He then sends Krill to check on him, and Krill discovers that Ryback's a NAVY SEAL, who got busted down to a cook after an incident in Panama. And Ryback continues to create trouble for them, so Stranix tries to hunt him down.

Asset forfeiture is a term used to describe the confiscation of assets, by the State, which are either (a) the proceeds of crime or (b) the instrumentalities of crime. Instrumentalities of crime are property that was used to facilitate crime, for example cars used to transport illegal narcotics. The terminology used in different jurisdictions varies. Some jurisdictions use the term "confiscation" instead of forfeiture. In recent years there has been a growing trend for countries to introduce civil forfeiture and such proceedings may be brought in the USA, Australia, the UK, Ireland, Italy, South Africa, various Canadian Provinces and Antigua.
There are two types of forfeiture cases, criminal and civil. Almost all forfeiture cases practiced today are civil. In civil forfeiture cases, the US Government sues the item of property, not the person; the owner is effectively a third party claimant. Once the government establishes probable cause that the property is subject to forfeiture, the owner must prove on a "preponderance of the evidence" that it is not. The owner need not be judged guilty of any crime. In contrast, criminal forfeiture is usually carried out in a sentence following a conviction and is a punitive act against the offender. Since the government can choose the type of case, a civil case is almost always chosen.

Reichert says Rahr should be successor

If the Metropolitan King County Council approves Sheriff Dave Reichert's recommended successor, Field Operations Chief Sue Rahr, she will be the first woman to be appointed sheriff in the organization's 152-year history.
Reichert, a Republican who defeated radio talk-show host Dave Ross for the District 8 Congressional seat last week, plans to step down as sheriff on Dec. 31.
He said in a statement released yesterday that Rahr, a 25-year veteran on the force, was "the logical choice" to head the 1,000-employee law-enforcement agency with a $110 million budget.

Starbucks, the king of coffee beans, sold its first shares of stock to the public today, and lines were as long as the queues at its 140 locations in seven metropolitan areas.
Starbucks' 2.1 million shares were priced to start trading at $17 a share, but the stock opened $4 higher at $21, and closed at $21.50. At that price, it made Chairman Howard Schultz's 1.1 million shares worth $23.5 million.

CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq (AP) - U.S. forces may be close to unlocking the mystery of who is behind a deadly innovation in Iraqi insurgents' weapons, a "lob bomb" now being used in Baghdad to target U.S. and Iraqi combat outposts, a senior American general said Friday in an Associated Press interview.
Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond, commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, called the weapon "the greatest threat right now that we face," and he likened the shadowy group behind it to the American military's elite Delta Force.
Hammond said the perpetrators are so skilled that he has likened their organization to the U.S. military's secretive and elite Delta Force. He said they have demonstrated an unusual degree of military skill and cunning.
"They don't leave a forensic trail, and that just means we're going to have to work a little bit longer" to eliminate them, he said. "Of everything we've had to deal with here, this is a tough one. Seattle SuperSonics relocation to Oklahoma City
The Seattle SuperSonics relocation to Oklahoma City was an effort by the ownership group of the Oklahoma City National Basketball Association team to move the Seattle SuperSonics to Oklahoma City. The team announced in July 2008 that it would play under a new name at Oklahoma City beginning in the 2008-2009 basketball season, effectively leaving the city of Seattle.
After failed efforts to persuade Washington government officials to provide funding to update KeyArena, the SuperSonics' ownership group, led by Howard Schultz, sold the team to Professional Basketball LLC (PBC), an investment group headed by Oklahoma City businessman Clayton Bennett.

Protection racket
A protection racket is an extortion scheme whereby a powerful entity or individual coerces other less powerful entities or individuals to pay protection money which allegedly serves to purchase "protection" services against various external threats.
Those who do not buy into the protection plan are often targeted by criminals existing inside or outside of the organization. These crimes are typically thought to originate from the organization itself. When a business refuses to pay for protection, word is put out that they are outside of the local organization's protection (these organizations often exist in the absence of a trusted police force) and that the business in question is therefore free game for freelance criminals or the organization itself.
The protection money is typically collected by a "bag man". Although the organization might be particularly coercive in obtaining protection money, it is usually careful to shelter its "mark" from attacks by competitor organizations that similarly attempt to solicit or threaten the targeted individuals or businesses. Disputes between organizations concerning territory consequently arise from two competing predators attempting to extort from the same "clients."
