At a news conference that looked — and sounded — more like a "Star Trek" convention yesterday, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen announced plans for a new science-fiction museum to open in the summer of 2004 at Experience Music Project.

Pseudologia fantastica, or pathological lying, is one of several terms applied by psychiatrists to the behaviour of habitual or compulsive lying.
It was first described in the medical literature in 1891. One definition of pathological lying is the following:
Pathological lying is falsification entirely disproportionate to any discernible end in view, may be extensive and very complicated, and may manifest over a period of years or even a lifetime.
The defining characteristics of pseudologia fantastica are that, first, the stories are not entirely improbable and often have some element of truth. They aren't a manifestation of delusion or some more wider form of psychosis: upon confrontation, the person can acknowledge them to be untrue, even if unwillingly. Second, the fabricative tendency is long lasting; it is not provoked by the immediate situation or social pressure as much as it originates with the person's innate urge to act in accordance. Third, a definitely internal, not an external, motive for the behavior can be clinically discerned. E.g. long lasting extortion or habitual spousal battery might cause a person to lie repeatedly, without the lying being a pathological symptom.

The media got it fast, got it right
It may not have been the "shock-and-awe" show promised by United States forces poised to invade Iraq.
But to anyone watching television, the swiftness with which yesterday's airstrike in Baghdad was executed, disseminated and explained was a heck of a dress rehearsal.
The White House and news organizations worked in well-oiled tandem. The time elapsed from when the bombing run took place to when anchors were correctly summarizing it — barely a half-hour — gave new meaning to the concept of a fast news cycle.
News that air-raid sirens were sounding over Baghdad broke at 6:37 p.m. Pacific Standard Time and 5:37 a.m. in Iraq.
By 6:41 p.m., CNN's senior Pentagon correspondent Jamie McIntyre had determined that it probably was not. Almost simultaneously, the White House said spokesman Ari Fleischer would make a brief statement.
One minute later — that's five minutes after explosions sounded over Baghdad — Fleischer appeared on camera to announce, "The opening stages of the disarmament of the Iraqi regime have begun" and that the president would speak at 10:15 p.m. (7:15 PST).

"Mission Accomplished", a phrase associated with completing a mission, is in recent years particularly associated with a sign displayed on USS Abraham Lincoln during a televised address by United States President George W. Bush on May 1, 2003.
Bush stated at the time that this was the end to major combat operations in Iraq. While this statement did coincide with an end to the conventional phase of the war, Bush's assertion — and the sign itself — became controversial after guerilla warfare in Iraq increased during the Iraqi insurgency. The Mercer Island billionaire left yesterday's festivities to Gov. Gary Locke, King County Executive Ron Sims and more than a dozen other state and local dignitaries, whose simpatico emotions turned the affair at the Seahawk training facility into a lovefest.
While the politicos congratulated each other and anyone else who played a role in helping keep the team in Seattle, Allen was in England watching tennis pal Monica Seles, who was upset yesterday at Wimbledon.

Dujail Massacre
The Dujail Massacre followed an unsuccessful assassination attempt against then Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein, on July 8, 1982, in small Shiite town of Dujail. The town was a stronghold of the Shiite Dawa Party, a group strongly opposed to Saddam Hussein and his war with Iran. Saddam Hussein was visiting the town to make a speech praising those who had served Iraq in the fight against Iran. While driving through the village center, his motorcade was attacked by one or more members of the Dawa Party. The president was unharmed in the three-hour firefight which ensued.
Saddam Hussein ordered his special security and military forces to carry out a reprisal attack against the town, which resulted in a total of 148 of the town's men being killed in the attack or executed later, some as young as 13 years of age. 1,500 people were also incarcerated and tortured, while other residents, many of them women and children, were sent to desert camps. Saddam's regime destroyed the town and then rebuilt it shortly after. In addition to these punishments, 1,000 square kilometres (250,000 acres) of farmland was destroyed; replanting was only permitted 10 years later.
A resident of Dujail recalled the incident at Hussein's trial in December 2005, stating that he had witnessed Baathist torture and murder in the government reprisal, including the murders of 7 of his 10 brothers. The executions in Dujail were the primary charges for which Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging on December 30, 2006. Barzan Hassan, Hussein's half-brother and former Iraqi intelligence chief, and Awad Bandar, former head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court, were hanged on January 15, 2007 for their parts in the massacre. Later, Taha Yassin Ramadan, Saddam's former deputy and former vice-president (originally sentenced to life in prison but later to death by hanging), was likewise executed on March 20, 2007, the fourth and last man in the al-Dujail trial to die by hanging for crimes against humanity

Baghdad Nuclear Research Facility
The Baghdad Nuclear Research Facility adjacent to the Tuwaitha "Yellow Cake Factory" contains the remains of nuclear reactors bombed by Israel in 1981 and the United States in 1991. It was used as a storage facility for spent reactor fuel and industrial and medical wastes. The radioactive material would not be useful for a fission bomb, but could be used in a dirty bomb. Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the facility was heavily looted by hundreds of Iraqis, though it is unclear what was taken.
The facility is surrounded by a sand berm four miles (6.4 km) around and 160 feet (50 m) high, and contained the French-built research reactor Osiraq, destroyed by Israel in 1981 before it went online.
On May 3, 2003, a detachment of U.S. Special Forces led by United States Navy Commander David Beckett and eight nuclear experts from the United States Department of Defense's Direct Support Team conducted a survey of the facility, finding the looting, similar to the situation in the nearby Tuwaitha Nuclear Research Center.

The Tigris is the eastern member of the two great rivers that define Mesopotamia, along with the Euphrates, which flows from the mountains of Turkey through Iraq.
The original Sumerian name was Idigna or Idigina, probably from *id (i)gina "running water",[1] which can be interpreted as "the swift river", contrasted to its neighbor, the Euphrates, whose leisurely pace caused it to deposit more silt and build up a higher bed than the Tigris.
The Tigris is approximately 1,900 km (1,180 miles) long, rising in the Taurus Mountains of eastern Turkey and flowing in a generally southeasterly direction until it joins the Euphrates near al-Qurnah in southern Iraq. The two rivers together form the Shatt al-Arab waterway, which empties into the Persian Gulf.

Operation Opera ( also known as Operation Babylon and Operation Ofra) was a surprise Israeli air strike against the Iraqi Osirak nuclear reactor (French: Osirak; Iraqi: Tammuz 1) in 1981.
In the late 1970s, Iraq purchased an "Osiris class" nuclear reactor from France. Israeli military intelligence assumed this was for the purpose of plutonium production to further an Iraqi nuclear weapons program. Israeli intelligence also believed that the summer of 1981 would be the last chance to destroy the reactor before it would be loaded with nuclear fuel.
On June 7, 1981, a squadron of Israeli Air Force F-16A fighter aircraft, with an escort of F-15As, bombed and heavily damaged the Osirak reactor.

Seeking justice in Dujail

It is a sight that most Iraqis never thought they would see - the man who ruled over them for more than two decades standing trial, in an Iraqi court and before Iraqi judges.
But that is precisely what Iraqis and the rest of the world will see when Saddam Hussein's trial resumes in Baghdad.
At that time, many of Dujail's men were away fighting in the war with Iran, which the Iraqi leader had started just 18 months before.
But already, the war was turning against Iraq and Saddam Hussein needed to drum up support.
So, on 8 July he decided to pay a visit: a visit that was filmed by one of his official cameramen.
In the footage - which has only recently emerged - the Iraqi president is seen visiting a family home, meeting people in the streets and addressing a cheering crowd outside the local Baath party headquarters, where he thanks the sons of Dujail for their courage in the war.
The visit appears to be carefully choreographed but then suddenly it all goes wrong.
Gunshots heard
As the presidential convoy heads out of town, there is an ambush. A small group of men, hiding in the palm groves, opens fire.
The camera is not rolling at this point but Jassim Mohammed Al-Hatuw remembers it all too clearly:
"When we heard gunshots, we started asking those who were coming back to town what had happened. Some people said the firing was in celebration of the president but other people said: 'No, the president has been shot!'"
But the president had not been shot. The gunmen had missed and most of them were killed by his bodyguards.
