Hints of life near Jupiter/Galileo's images suggest ocean may exist on moon Europa

HOUSTON CHRONICLE

New images of Jupiter's moon Europa, snapped by NASA's Galileo probe, suggest that slush and possibly an ocean of water flows beneath the satellite's fractured, frozen crust, astronomers said Tuesday.

If their preliminary assessments are correct, distant Europa has a warm inner core and liquid water, two key conditions favorable to life.

""Water doesn't equate to life. It certainly is a requirement for life," said Ronald Greeley, an Arizona State University planetary geologist and a member of the $1.4 billion mission's photo analysis team.

Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to have liquid water on its surface.

STS-34

STS-34 was a space shuttle mission by NASA using the Space Shuttle Atlantis. It was the 31st shuttle mission, and the 5th flight for Atlantis. It carried the Galileo probe bound for Jupiter.

The Space Shuttle Atlantis lifted off from Pad B, Launch Complex 39, KSC, at 12:53 p.m. EDT on Oct. 18, 1989. It carried the Jupiter-bound Galileo spacecraft in its cargo bay.

The first major task in orbit was deployment of the Galileo spacecraft with its attached IUS booster. Deployment occurred on schedule at 7:15 EDT, slightly more than six hours after launch, and the IUS performed flawlessly to send the spacecraft toward Venus on the first leg of its six-year journey to Jupiter.

Astronauts send Galileo `to another world'

HOUSTON CHRONICLE

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The Atlantis astronauts successfully started Galileo on its long journey toward Jupiter late Wednesday

Atlantis soared from its Kennedy Space Center launch pad at 12:53 p.m. (11:53 a.m. Houston time), just three minutes into a 29-minute launch window.

"It was just a good-looking launch," said NASA Deputy Administrator J.R. Thompson.

Aboard Atlantis are mission commander Don Williams, pilot Mike McCulley and mission specialists Franklin Chang-Diaz, Shannon Lucid and Ellen Baker.

After slipping into a 180-mile-high orbit, the shuttle fliers began a series of steps leading to Galileo's much-anticipated debut.

At 7:15 p.m., Galileo and the powerful two-stage rocket booster that was to propel it out of the Earth's gravitational grasp drifted from the payload bay as the shuttle sailed over the west coast of California.

"Galileo is now on its way to another world," Williams said, confirming the deployment.

Firing Atlantis' steering engines, Williams maneuvered his ship a safe distance from the rocket blast that soon would emerge from Galileo's stubby booster.

On schedule an hour later, the booster's first stage fired for 2 1/2 minutes before falling away.

"That sounds like good news," radioed Lucid, who supervised the Galileo rocket operation for the crew, when informed of the successful burn.

Within a few moments, the booster's second stage began a 105-second burn, then Galileo separated from the rocket and broke free of the Earth's bonds, falling toward the sun.

As Galileo sped away, its power booms, scientific instruments and communications antenna unfurled, giving it a buglike appearance.

All the craft's systems appeared to be operating normally, said NASA's Galileo project manager, Richard Spehalski.

The spacecraft's complicated trajectory through the solar system will sling it around Venus in early February. Then, Galileo will swing twice around the Earth - in December 1990 and again in December 1992 - before it veers toward a December 1995 rendezvous with Jupiter.

Each of those planetary "flybys" is intended to give Galileo the momentum required to reach Jupiter, because a launcher with the thrust for a straight shot was not available.

JACK: Hey! Can you hear me? Hey! Can you hear me? [to Kate] I need that water. [He gives the pilot some water] Hey. Here you go. Hey.

PILOT: How many survived?

JACK: At least 48. Does anything feel broken?

PILOT: No, no. Just my head's a little dizzy, that's all.

JACK: Yeah. It's probably a concussion.

SP-4902 The Planetary Quarantine Program

NASA and Its Planetary Quarantine Responsibilities

THE AUTHORITY FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION of the national and international recommendations concerning the prevention of contamination, and later concerning planetary quarantine, resides in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, subject always to the final authority of the Congress, which established that agency and which appropriates the funds to carry out approved programs, and to the Federal Executive office, which approves the budgets NASA presents to the Congress.

This Office of Life Sciences was formed after NASA, in August 1959, set up another biological group, the ad hoc Bioscience Advisory Committee, better known as the Kety Committee after Dr. Seymour S. Kety, its Chairman. Other members were Drs. Wallace O. Fenn, David R. Goddard, Donald G. Marquis, Robert S. Morison, and Cornelius A. Tobias. Advisors included Stephen Dole, Dr. Joshua Lederberg, Dr. Melvin Calvin, and Dr. W. Randolph Lovelace, II. Dr. Randt served as executive secretary. The Kety Committee had met on October 15-16, 1959, and on January 25, 1960, and had recommended that an Office of Life Sciences be established as a major division of NASA.

Dr. Glennan accepted the recommendation and established the office on March 1, 1960, naming Dr. Randt as Director. This office was responsible for all biological and medical programs within NASA. The mandate included aerospace medicine, biological satellite experiments, exobiology, and the accompanying spacecraft sterilization program.

Ghost Rider

Did I say something funny?

Ironic.

We're big on irony around here.

- It's out by the shed.

- Thanks.

It does.

What?

You're wondering if your bike

looks normal? It does.

And to answer your other questions:

Last night did happen...

...it wasn't a dream...

...and it will happen again.

Who are you?

Question is, who are you?

You are the Rider.

The Ghost Rider.

Get used to it, kid.

It'll be a lot easier.

If you don't, I got a nice cozy spot

picked out for you.

They've seen you now.

They'll be waiting for you.

You'll need my help,

you expect to last the night.

Last time I let a stranger help me

it didn't pan out so good.

This ain't something

you can run from, kid.

This day has been coming

since you made that deal.

Congratulations.
