For the official record. The rest of you can rot permanently in Hell for all I care.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motive_(law)

Motive (law)

In law, especially criminal law, a motive is the cause that moves people to induce a certain action. Motive in itself is seldom an element of any given crime; however, the legal system typically allows motive to be proven in order to make plausible the accused's reasons for committing a crime, at least when those motives may be obscure or hard to identify with.

The law technically distinguishes between motive and intent. "Intent" in criminal law is synonymous with mens rea, which means no more than the specific mental purpose to perform a deed that is forbidden by a criminal statute, or the reckless disregard of whether the law will be violated.[citation needed] "Motive" describes instead the reasons in the accused's background and station in life that are supposed to have induced the crime.

Motive is particularly important in prosecutions for homicide. First, murder is so drastic a crime that most people recoil from the thought of being able to do it; proof of motive explains why the accused did so desperate an act.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowardice

Cowardice

Cowardice describes a personality trait which is typically viewed as a negative characteristic and has been generally frowned upon (see norms) within most, if not all global cultures, while courage, typically viewed as its direct opposite, is generally rewarded and encouraged.

"Cowardice" can be difficult to define outside of specific social contexts. In general terms, it is the perceived failure to demonstrate sufficient bravery in the face of an adverse situation. Cowards are usually seen to have avoided or refused to engage in a confrontation or struggle which has been deemed good or righteous by the wider culture in which they live.

On a more mundane level, the label may be applied to those who are regarded as too frightened to defend their rights or those of others from aggressors in their lives.

Etymology

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, the word "coward" comes from an Old French word coart (modern French couard), a combination of the word for "tail" and an agent noun suffix. It would therefore have meant "one with a tail" — perhaps one in the habit of turning it, or it may be derived from the dog's habit of putting its tail between its legs when it is afraid.

Courts-martial in the United States

Courts-martial in the United States are criminal trials conducted by the Military of the United States. Most commonly, courts-martial are convened to try members of the U.S. military for violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which is the U.S. military's criminal code. However, they can also be convened for other purposes, including military tribunals and the enforcement of martial law in an occupied territory. Courts-martial are governed by the rules of procedure and evidence laid out in the Manual for Courts-Martial and Military Rules of Evidence, respectively.

a military judge determines questions of law, and the members of the panel (or military judge in a judge-alone case) determine questions of fact.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_of_the_Armies

General of the Armies

General of the Armies and General of the Armies of the United States are the highest possible ranks in the United States Army.

After World War II, which saw the introduction of U.S. "5-star" officers who outranked Washington, both Congress and the President revisited the issue of Washington's rank. To maintain George Washington's proper position as the first Commanding General of the United States Army, he was appointed, posthumously, to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States by congressional joint resolution Public Law 94-479 January 19, 1976, approved by President Gerald R. Ford on October 11, 1976. The law established the grade as having "rank and precedence over all other grades of the Army, past or present,"clearly making it superior to General of the Army. The Department of the Army Order 31-3, issued on March 13, 1978 had an effective appointment date of July 4, 1976. The rank ensures that no United States military officer outranks George Washington

US Marine Corps Private West: Sir, there's been no prior intelligence mission in this area.

US Marine Corps 2LT James Herrick: I know. We're it. We're just adding a little initiative. Donovan. Eichler. Locate the control box. I'll attach a C670. West. Miller. Stay here. Keep an eye out.

US Marine Corps Private Eichler: There's no control box.

US Marine Corps Private Donovan: There's none over here either. There's got to be electronics.

US Marine Corps Private Eichler: Wait a minute. This thing isn't even operable. It's bogus.

US Marine Corps 2LT James Herrick: What?

US Marine Corps Private Eichler: You know, it's a dummy like those fake planes the British used during World War 2 to trick the Germans.

US Marine Corps Private West: Incoming!

This was a pleasant surprise. I was disappointed though when I first saw them that they were preparing to leave. I think this is the one at the link below. I love these ships. Who needs a parade when you can watch a U.S. Navy warship getting underway? If I could choose any ship I wanted for a personal yacht, it would be a Burke-class destroyer.

US Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville: How'd you sleep?

Television announcer recorded video: Dr. Neville will be taking a closer look at the ongoing mutations of Dr. Alice Krippin's once-hailed miracle cure for cancer. So far, almost 5000 patients treated with her retrofitted virus have begun exhibiting symptoms resembling the early onset of rabies. Twenty-five patients have already died. Dr. Neville has ordered local hospitals to stockpile antiviral drugs and to begin preliminary quarantine protocols.

US Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville: It's my birthday.

Television announcer recorded video: We are fully confident Dr. Neville can see us though these -

US Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville: You going to sing?

US Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville: [ pre-recorded audio broadcast ] My name is Robert Neville. I am a survivor living in New York City. I am broadcasting on all AM frequencies. I will be at the South Street Seaport every day at midday when the Sun is highest in the sky. If you are out there, if anyone is out there, I can provide food. I can provide shelter. I can provide security. If there's anybody out there, anybody -

Thomas: That's right, ma'am. You follow the track for about a mile, past Glen Horach, and then you come to -

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: The river.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: Bugger it! Stupid!

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: [ telephone ] Hello, Thomas?

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: [ telephone ] I'm afraid I've done something rather foolish. I've broken the prop shaft crossing the river.

Thomas: [ telephone ] Are you sure, ma'am?

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: [ telephone ] Yes, of course I'm sure. It's the front one, not the rear. Lost the four-wheel drive. Don't forget, I used to be a mechanic during the War.

Aaron Doral - Colonial Public Relations: And now it is my great pleasure to introduce the last commander of the Battlestar Galactica, Commander Adama.

Decommissioning ceremony crowd: [ Applause ]

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: Thank you very much. The Cylon War is long over, yet we must not forget the reasons why so many sacrificed so much in the cause of freedom. The cost of the uniform can be high but... [ very long pause ] Sometimes it's too high. You know, when we fought the Cylons, we did it to save ourselves from extinction. But we never answered the question, why? Why are we as a people worth saving? We still commit murder because of greed, spite, jealousy. And we still visit all of our sins upon our children. We refuse to accept the responsibility for anything that we've done. Like we did with the Cylons. We decided to play God, create life. When that life turned against us, we comforted ourselves in the knowledge that it really wasn't our fault, not really. You cannot play God then wash your hands of the things that you've created. Sooner or later, the day comes when you can't hide from
the things that you've done anymore.

Colonel Saul Tigh - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Executive Officer: You are one surprising son of a bitch.

Even if Lily is as nice in person as she seems to be on TV, I'm beginning to think I shouldn't pursue it. I've been feeling confident this thing could actually be real, but that is actually a real problem. So many people are watching what I do in private so they can try to mimic my success. If I talk to a pretty woman on TV while sitting in my living room and then end up spending the foreseeable future finding ways to make her smile in a real relationship, then there are going to be other people out there trying the same thing. And after that Tacoma Mall terrorist, I just think this is all a bad idea. As some jerk standing next to me the other day pointed out conspicuously secretive: It sucks to be me. And then there are all these people with the "priceless," "volume down," etc. bullshit.....when does it end? How are they finding out this stuff? Why can't they just all go away and if anybody has to monitor everything I do and write, why can't they just
give that job to Lily? That would be pretty fun.

Kerry Burgess wrote:

I remember having dreams when I last slept but I can remember absolutely no details. Except, maybe something to do with my imaginary girlfriend, Lily. For a while I have been wondering if they can also manipulate my half-asleep dreams too. Those are those first dreams I remember having when I am drifting off to sleep. I have never really thought of them as dreams though, rather more like random thoughts that go through my mind as I drift off. Last night, I have two such thoughts that stuck with me when I woke up minutes or seconds later. The first one was of Senator Carl Levin standing in front of me either in an elevator or waiting for an elevator. He said something about how my "reading was correct." The second scene was of Lily telling me of some endearing quality about herself.

This imaginary girlfriend routine is kind of fun, but with all these actors around me, who knows what is the reality. What I really want to avoid is encouraging people to stalk women on TV. No one should take seriously the perceived affections of a person on TV.
