Innovation: Administrator Daniel Goldin tells scientists their work isn't good enough--and many of them agree with him.

So his eyes lit up as USC's Tanguay described research into cameras that do far more than replicate the eye's retina, and instead work in concert with something analogous to the brain's visual processing centers.
"We need thinking systems," Goldin said.
If the space chief had his way, new spacecraft would be designed and tested almost entirely in virtual environments.
To get this kind of technology, however, schools may have to rethink how they train engineers, the chief said. "The problem is, we're getting nerds coming out of college," he said. Their focus on precision above all leaves no margin for error, he said. They can solve a problem to a dozen decimal places, he added, but still not understand the fundamentals of the question they're asking.

Quotes
Mr. Burns: Tell me, Simpson, if an opportunity arose for taking a small short-cut, you wouldn't be averse to taking it, would you?
Homer: Hmm, not as such.
Mr. Burns: Neither would I. If you can take advantage of a situation in some way, it's your duty as an American to do it. Why should the race always be to the swift, or the Jumble to the quick-witted? Should they be allowed to win merely because of the gifts God gave them? Well I say, "Cheating is the gift man gives himself."
Homer: Mr. Burns, I insist that we cheat!
Mr. Burns: Excellent!

"Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine"
We took a walk that night, but it wasn't the same
We had a fight on the promenade out in the rain
She said she loved me, but she had somewhere to go
She couldn't scream while I held her close
I swore I'd never let her go
Tell me what you wanna know
Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on
There ain't no motive for this crime
Jenny was a friend of mine
So come on, oh come on, oh come on
I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time
For me to go, so let me know if it's alright
I just can't take this, I swear I told you the truth
She couldn't scream while I held her close
I swore I'd never let her go
Tell me what you wanna know
Oh come on, oh come on, oh come on
And then you whisper in my ear
I know what you're doing here
So come on, oh come on, oh come on
There ain't no motive for this crime
Jenny was a friend of mine

Cathode ray tube
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The cathode ray tube (CRT) is a vacuum tube that contains one or more electron guns and a phosphorescent screen, and is used to display images.
In television sets and computer monitors, the entire front area of the tube is scanned repetitively and systematically in a fixed pattern called a raster. An image is produced by controlling the intensity of each of the three electron beams
History
Cathode rays were discovered by Johann Hittorf in 1869 in primitive Crookes tubes. He observed that some unknown rays were emitted from the cathode (negative electrode) which could cast shadows on the glowing wall of the tube, indicating the rays were traveling in straight lines. In 1890, Arthur Schuster demonstrated cathode rays could be deflected by electric fields, and William Crookes showed they could be deflected by magnetic fields. In 1897, J. J. Thomson succeeded in measuring the mass of cathode rays

Every time he would create a new method for recording time he would come back to find it destroyed and mannequins would be positioned around there. The world was really quite peaceful and calm and boring but there was no way to measure time and that lasted for probably eighty years.

Goodyear Television Playhouse
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Goodyear Television Playhouse is an American anthology series that was telecast live on NBC from 1951 to 1957 during the "Golden Age of Television". Sponsored by Goodyear, Goodyear alternated sponsorship with Philco, and the Philco Television Playhouse was seen on alternate weeks.
In 1955, the title was shortened to The Goodyear Playhouse and it aired on alternate weeks with The Alcoa Hour. The three series were essentially the same, with the only real difference being the name of the sponsor.

Colonel Perry: I thought you were more clever than that, Woodward. This whole goddamn program is off the shelf. Do you really think for one second those wimps at the Pentagon... would allow the regeneration of dead soldiers, American soldiers?

You really think Abe Lincoln is going to save you?
One of those days. Being half-asleep probably I started working on the wrong date for a news item I discovered this morning. That item isn't listed here and I might post the report tomorrow. I'm too damned tired to finish it today.
But I wanted to say something again today, as usual, that demonstrates incontrovertibly my brilliant genius here and so I'll just educate again you dullards on an oldie but a goodie.
I could have jumped away then too as I can now but I did not as now.
I have had that same alarm clock since I bought it when I was living in that homeless shelter north of Seattle. I had no idea this post would turn out this way until just a few minutes before making this post. I established all the content before this line of text and I wrote this line of text last and then I tried to think of a title.
