Civilization 6 Diary, The Mighty Pip Empire: Part 2

Alex Ferguson Arrives

By Philippa Warr on October 25th, 2016 at 5:00 pm.

Now that I’m past the first 100 turns political offers seem to be turning up with greater frequency. I hate negotiating with AI civilizations so I have decided to appoint former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson as my diplomatic advisor. I cannot afford actual Alex Ferguson so I am, instead, opening his book, A Year In The Life: The Manager’s Diary, at random and reading until relevant advice presents itself.

I am wracking my brain to develop another test case but this is the best I can think up so far. And that is really a very good test case.

John T. Scopes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Thomas Scopes (August 3, 1900 – October 21, 1970) was a teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, who was charged on May 5, 1925 for violating Tennessee's Butler Act, which prohibited the teaching of evolution in Tennessee schools. He was tried in a case known as the Scopes Trial, in which he was found guilty and fined $100.

Biography

Scopes was born in 1900 on a farm in Paducah, Kentucky where he was reared before moving to Danville, Illinois as a teenager. In 1917 he moved to Salem, Illinois where he was a member of the class of 1919 at Salem High School. He attended the University of Illinois for a short time before leaving for health reasons. He earned a degree at the University of Kentucky in 1924, with a major in law and a minor in geology. Scopes moved to Dayton where he took a job as the Rhea County High School's football coach and occasionally filled in as substitute teacher when regular members of the staff were off work.

Scopes's involvement in the so-called Scopes Monkey Trial came about after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced that it would finance a test case challenging the constitutionality of the Butler Act if they could find a Tennessee teacher willing to act as a defendant.

A band of businessmen in Dayton, Tennessee, led by engineer and geologist George Rappleyea, saw this as an opportunity to get publicity for their town and approached Scopes. Rappleyea pointed out that while the Butler Act prohibited the teaching of human evolution, the state required teachers to use the assigned textbook, Hunter's Civic Biology (1914), which included a chapter on evolution. Rappleyea argued that teachers were essentially required to break the law. When asked about the test case, Scopes was initially reluctant to get involved, but after some discussion he told the group gathered in Robinson's Drugstore, "If you can prove that I've taught evolution and that I can qualify as a defendant, then I'll be willing to stand trial."

The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)

But I understand you're
a difficult man to see.
I thought you'd have
the solution by now.
Not yet. That's why
I wanted to see you.
All you have to do now is to
substitute this expression at this point.
That will reproduce
the first-order term.

But what about the
effect of the other terms?
Almost negligible. With variation
of parameters, this is the answer.
How can you be so sure?
Have you tested this theory?
I find it works well enough
to get me from one planet to another.
I am Klaatu.
I spent two days at your
Walter Reed Hospital, room 309.

After I started trying to build a test case around this journal entry, and after I started working on it, on FM 95.7 Seattle Washington the song has started playing "we hear you're leaving."

send it off in a letter to yourself

don't lose that number it's the only one you own

when you get home

The next song that started playing on FM 95.7 is "please don't leave me." I think that song title is "Crying Man" but I am not certain. That was also a nickname of one of the dimensional travelers in the 1995 television series "Sliders." I am now changing the radio back to FM 102.5 KZOK. "When the walls come tumbling down" is in progress on that station. I've got to get back on track and try to build that test case. Some of these test cases don't work out because I do not have any data on my non-internet connected computer for research information.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/12/11 12:16 PM
Okay, this is the first good match I can find without giving away too many details by research on the internet. Even now, I was thinking, I am giving those thieving mobsters a lot of clues by describing how I research my test case. All they have to do is to watch my internet activity and they know I am working up a test case.

Okay, my next scheduled test is 12:45 PM 12 April 2011 and I will listen to FM 102.5 Seattle Washington radio for the information that is broadcast during that minute and I will listen for any details that seem to have a significant association to this test case as another test of time travel communication of which I have not been keeping count of the number of tests I have carried out so far. I need to go back and make a count.

My world is a lot smaller now and usually those observations - as a source of something I have absolutely no control over - are of television programs I watch.

The prescient sleeping dreams about re-broadcast episodes are most convincing however the new broadcasts are convincing equally too because there are plot elements that are the fabric of the episode and that I was never aware of before actually watching the episode and after having my prescient sleeping dream.

SHERYL CROW

"Soak Up The Sun"

My friend the communist
Holds meetings in his RV
I can't afford his gas
So I'm stuck here watching TV
I don't have digital
I don't have diddly squat
It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got

[CHORUS:]
I'm gonna soak up the sun
Gonna tell everyone
To lighten up (I'm gonna tell 'em that)
I've got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame
I'm looking up o I'm gonna soak up the sun
I'm gonna soak up the sun
I've got a crummy job
It don't pay near enough
To buy the things it takes
To win me some of your love
Every time I turn around
I'm looking up, you're looking down
Maybe something's wrong with you
That makes you act the way you do
Maybe i am crazy too

[CHORUS]

I'm gonna soak up the sun
While it's still free
I'm gonna soak up the sun
Before it goes out on me
Don't have no master suite
I'm still the king of me
You have a fancy ride, but baby
I'm the one who has the key
