The meaning of the Knight

Hi, I've been asked this a few times about why we chose to have a Knight on the cover of The Build Master. Here is my explanation that for some unknown reason was left out of the book:
By definition a Knight is a nobleman or noblewoman, a seeker of virtue, defender of the crown (metaphor would be corporate or group culture), a protector of faith or philosophy. Knights carry themselves with chivalrous conduct and can be a very formidable warrior if needed. The suit of armor is a good defense for the unjust attacks they may receive (from non-build team members).

Knights are also known to have been seated at the round table (WAR meetings) with the King to discuss peace and the well-being of the common folks (the employees doing the work). I see Build Masters or SCM personnel as the modern-day-high-tech Knight.

Speak softly but always carry a big sword!

Embolism Then Threatened His Life--Rheumatism Traced to Tooth Infected 20 Years Ago

Special to The New York Times

Oyster Bay, L.I., Jan. 6. -- Theodore Roosevelt, former President of the United States, died this morning between 4 and 4:15 o'clock while asleep in his bed at his home on Sagamore Hill, in this place.

His physicians said that the immediate cause of death was a clot of blood which detached itself from a vein and entered the lungs.

His sudden death took by surprise his physicians as well as all others who had been with him lately. It was announced that the blood clot was not directly due to the inflammatory rheumatism from which he had been suffering for two months, but must be traced to earlier conditions. One of the contributing causes was the fever which he contracted during his explorations in Brazil, when he discovered the River of Doubt early in 1914. This fever left a poison in the blood which had been a partial cause of several attacks of illness which he had suffered since that time.

Colonel Roosevelt was working hard as late as Saturday, dictating articles and letters. He spent Sunday quietly, but looked and felt well, until shortly before 11 o'clock, when he had difficulty in breathing. After treatment he felt better and returned to bed.

Mrs. Roosevelt looked in to see how he was sleeping at 2 o'clock this morning. He then appeared normal. Two hours later, James Amos, an old negro servant of the family, formerly with them at the White House, thought that there was something wrong with the manner in which Colonel Roosevelt was breathing. Amos had been placed in the next room to keep a close watch over Colonel Roosevelt, and went at once to the bedside. He was alarmed at the hollow sound of his breathing and summoned the trained nurse. When she arrived, the breathing had stopped. Dr. George W. Faller of Oyster Bay, the family physician, was summoned, and found that life had left the body a few minutes before.

Statement By Physicians

Later, the following statement was given out by Dr. Faller and Drs. John H. Richard and John A. Hartwell of New York, who had Colonel Roosevelt under their care at Roosevelt Hospital:

Colonel Roosevelt had been suffering from an attack of inflammatory rheumatism for about two months. His progress had been entirely satisfactory and his condition had not given cause for special concern. On Sunday he was in good spirits and spent the evening with his family, dictating letters. He retired at 11 o'clock, and at 4 o'clock in the morning his manservant who occupied an adjoining room, noticed that, while sleeping quietly, Colonel Roosevelt's breathing was hollow. He died almost immediately, without awakening. The cause of death was an embolus.

George W. Faller, M.D. John H. Richards, M.D. John A. Hartwell, M.D.

An embolus is a clot of blood. Dr. Faller said that it had probably occurred in the lungs, but might have been in the brain.

*My* time machine.

I remember that on 01 February 2002 I got into the Microsoft office building and went to my cubicle to start my work day and I told Vince what had happened a short while earlier.

Vince was the physics graduate Microsoft seated me next to after that moved all of us out to Issaquah Washington to a new set of office buildings. The world-famous Microsoft campus in Redmond is on the north end of Lake Sammamish and those new office buildings they moved us to are at the other end.

Microsoft had me sitting next to a physics graduate when I was working at Microsoft here in the criminally rebellious State of Washington. He exclaimed to me one day, when we were working that Microsoft office in Issaquah Washington, not long after, that thanks to Microsoft, he and I never would have met, if not for Microsoft seating us in the cubicles next to each other.

One day he called me over to elaborate to him about some detail about some Microsoft product I was focused on, Visual Basic perhaps, but maybe something else, but we talked about some other details and that was the time I found some reason to write on his whiteboard that the speed of light equals 186,282 miles per second. I also wrote on his whiteboard that pi equals 3.1415926536 as that was a topic of conversation during that time.

I remember thinking about his facial reaction when the discussion turned to ballistics. My sense at the time was that he was watching me as I was watching him when the discussion turned to the distinction between physics and astrophysics. But who can really say. That was a long time ago. That was very probably the year 2003 during the discussion about physics.

Subject: Move date

Hi Kerry!

I received your email yesterday but it has been so busy that I haven't had a chance to read through it. I will keep working on it through the week :)

The person who is currently in B-304 only had a 3 month lease but they were hoping to extend it a little further into September for employment reasons. Would you be okay with moving your move date back a few days to September 27th? If not this person is okay with leaving early, it would just be ideal for them to stay that extra little bit.

Again either way is fine with us we just wanted to at least run it by you.

Thanks Kerry!

How long you think it's been up there?

Delhi Mission Control went down, same as ours... ...ten years ago.

Heh. So for ten years?

Why did it come down so low?

I don't know. Maybe the sun cooked its brain or it was looking for something.

What?

Give me a large flatblade. Maybe some kind of signal? I don't know.

What are you gonna do with it?

I'm gonna give it something socially responsible to do...
