Calling All Marines

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: August 16, 2006

For the past few hours, not if before or after I took a nap this afternoon, I have started thinking that I was on the Apollo 11 flight too. At ten years old, I was the secret crewmember of Apollo 11 to the moon. Crazy. At this rate, by tomorrow, they'll have me believing that I was born on Mars.

I remember Mom telling us to watch the color images on tv of Mars. We lived in that trailer park outside De Queen that had the corn field between the trailer and the drive-in movie theatre.

Who knows. Maybe Viking was the cover story for a manned-mission to Mars and I was on it.

Mr. Largo: Lisa, there's no room for crazy bebop in "My Country 'tis Of Thee!"

Lisa: But, Mr. Largo, that's what "My Country" is all about.

Mr. Largo: What?

Lisa: I'm wailing out for the homeless family living out of its car. The Iowa farmer, whose land has been taken away by unfeeling bureaucrats. The West Virginia coal miner, coughing up his...

Mr. Largo: Well, that's all fine and good, but Lisa, none of these unpleasant people are going to be at the recital next week.

Once in a Blue Dune

Sand dunes often accumulate in the floors of craters. In this region of Lyot Crater, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) shows a field of classic barchan dunes on Jan. 24, 2018.

Just to the south of the group of barchan dunes is one large dune with a more complex structure. This particular dune, appearing like turquoise blue in enhanced color, is made of finer material and/or has a different composition than the surrounding.

Jimmy Carter

XXXIX President of the United States: 1977 - 1981

Proclamation 4759—Modification of the Implementation of the Orderly Marketing Agreement and the Temporary Quantitative Limitation on the Importation Into the United States of Color Television Receivers and Certain Subassemblies Thereof

May 15, 1980

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

On January 26, 1979, by Proclamation 4634, I proclaimed pursuant to the Constitution and the statutes of the United States, including section 203 of the Trade Act of 1974 (19 U.S.C. 2253) (the Trade Act), certain temporary quantitative limitations on the importation into the United States of color television receivers and certain subassemblies thereof, provided for in items 923.74 through 923.83, inclusive, of the Tariff Schedules of the United States (TSUS) (19 U.S.C. 1202).

Exports to the United States of color television receiver subassemblies, provided for in item 923.78, and subject to Proclamation 4634, fell considerably below the restraint level established by that Proclamation for the first restraint period. The existing carryover provision would allow an increase in the quantity to be entered during the second restraint period of only 29,700 units of such subassemblies. In the interest of equity, this Proclamation will increase the allowable carryover by 5,300 units to 35,000 units. The total number of such subassemblies exported to the United States and entered during the fifteen months covered by Proclamation 4634 will remain less than the number originally contemplated by that Proclamation.

Now, Therefore, I, Jimmy Carter, President of the United States of America, in order to assure equitable treatment under Proclamation 4634 and acting under the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the statutes of the United States, including section 203 of the Trade Act (19 U.S.C. 2253), and in accordance with Article XIX of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) (61 Stat. (pt. 5) A58; 8 U.S.T. (pt. 2) 1786) do proclaim that Subpart A, part 2 of the Appendix to the TSUS is modified as set forth in the Annex to this proclamation.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this fifteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fourth.

JIMMY CARTER

Gaeta: So, that would put our squadron about here. Now, looks like the main fight is shaping up over here, near Virgon's orbit. But even at top speed, they're still over an hour away.

Adama: Plot a course along this axis. If we can keep Virgon between us and the battle, (Starbuck walks in, looks at Tigh, points to her [ cheek ]) we might be able to get pretty close before the Cylons are even aware.

Gaeta: At least, sir.

Starbuck: Commander. (salutes) Ready for duty, sir.

Adama: Good.

Starbuck: Where the hell did the Cylons come from?

Adama: All we know for sure is that they achieved complete surprise and we're taking heavy losses. We lost thirty Battlestars in the opening attack.

Starbuck: That's a quarter of the fleet.

Adama: I need pilots, and I need fighters.

Starbuck: Pilots you've got - there's twenty of us climbing the walls down in the ready room, but fighters...

Adama: I think I seem to remember an entire squadron of fighters down on the starboard hangar bay yesterday.

Starbuck: (thinks about that for a second and then salutes) Yes, sir.

(Starboard hangar bay - shot of the museum railings being knocked over)

Starbuck: You're sure they'll fly?

Chief: Well, the reactor's still hot. So all we have to do is pull the rad buffers from the engine, refuel it, load the ordinance and you're ready to go. The biggest problem's gonna be getting them over to the port launch bay.

Starbuck: Why can't we use the starboard launch?

Chief: It's a gift shop now.

FLIGHT TEST RESULTS

Aerodynamic characteristics, especially those affecting flight operations, performance and flying characteristics were, for the most part, essentially as predicted using the techniques described earlier. Lift, drag, control power and controls-f ixed damping (both pitch and yaw) were as forecast or slightly better. Predicted air minimum control speed was confirmed. Only the yaw damper performance was measurably less than expected, and this could have been due to excessive free play in the lower rudder which was observed to be close to 0.5 degree.

Support Strut Fairings

The SCA was first flown with ALT shuttle support struts and stabilizing tip fins on the horizontal tail on December 16, 1976.

My neck still aches sitting here at my desk at 3 AM on Wednesday 19 October 2011.

I don't know if they are planning to do something somewhere in the world today or not. I might be chasing myself in time-traveler-effect circles again. Yesterday morning I had an extensive line of thought about how I was deciding at that moment to *not* take back with me as a time traveler my journal with all this information but later in the day yesterday I decided I was still going to take it all with me and transfer that information to the past. I had imagined myself standing there on the hill someday on a day in the future relative to this present day and I used a sledgehammer to smash the data storage devices with that information. Then I thought about how by doing that, I cause another clone of myself to be created and that clone from the hyperspace portal is the person who actually shows up as a time traveler in 2003 and the people out there reading this today and who were there to meet me on that mesa on 3 March 2003 wouldn't know that detail because I destroyed the data and my clone from the hyperspace portal decided to not tell them the truth. I thought about that a lot because of that clone's future struggle while I was essentially shirking my duty by creating him and from his point of view he would be no different from me as the person sitting here right now writing this observation. The other side of that notion is that as the person sitting here right now I would also be free of the burden of traveling backwards through time after I leave here and that seems to be the only way I will ever get to enjoy some vacation time. Because I sure as hell can't get any time off as it is around here.
