MARTOUF
In 2000 years, the Tok'ra have never bowed to Goa'uld terrorism. We will not start now.

ANISE
Either way, it is true that any of your personnel who may have encountered the Goa'uld in the last two months may have fallen victim.

MARTOUF
The problem is, Zatarc programming is virtually impossible to detect.

ANISE
That is not true.

MARTOUF
You're method is unproven.

ANISE
It worked on one occasion.

MARTOUF
Even that is in question.

ANISE
It is all we have right now.

O'NEILL
S'cuse me?! Do we or do we not have a Zanex detector??

The American Presidency Project

Dwight D. Eisenhower

XXXIV President of the United States: 1953 - 1961

305 - Remarks Recorded for Program Marking the 75th Anniversary of the Incandescent Lamp.

October 24, 1954

FAITH, faith and the American individual. Yes, it is on these two pillars that our future rests.

It was Thomas Edison who said: "Be courageous; be as brave as your fathers before you. Have faith. Go forward ."

Seventy-five years ago this very week, Tom Edison--a humble, typical sort of American--put this credo into action and gave a new light to the world.

It is faith that has made our Nation--has made it, and kept it free. Atheism substitutes men for the supreme creator and this leads inevitably to domination and dictatorship. But we believe--and it is because we believe that God intends all men to be free and equal that we demand free government. Our Government is servant, not master, our chosen representatives are our equals, not our czars or commissars.

We must jealously guard our foundation in faith. For on it rests the ability of the American individual to live and thrive in this blessed land-and to be able to help other less fortunate people to achieve freedom and individual opportunity. These we take for granted, but to others they are often only a wistful dream.

"In God we trust." Often have we heard the words of this wonderful American motto. Let us make sure that familiarity has not made them meaningless for us.

We carry the torch of freedom as a sacred trust for all mankind. We do not believe that God intended the light that He created to be put out by men.

Soon we will be celebrating one of our holidays, one that typifies for me much of what we mean by the American freedom. That will be Halloween. On that evening I would particularly like to be, of course, with my grandchildren, for Halloween is one of those times when we Americans actually encourage the little individuals to be free to do things rather as they please. I hope you and your children have a gay evening and let's all give a little prayer that their childish pranks will be the only kind of mischief with which we Americans must cope. But it can be a confident kind of a prayer too, for God has made us strong and faith has made and kept us free.

MARTOUF
Obviously, I do not believe you were complicit with Major Graham's actions.

[O'Neill nods.]

DANIEL
We weren't, but just out of curiosity, how can you be sure we weren't?

MARTOUF
I cannot.

ANISE
I can. Major Graham was a Zatarc.

O'NEILL
A what?

ANISE
The victim of Goa'uld mind-control technology.

DANIEL
A what?

ANISE
I believe a mission is programmed into the victim's subconscious. That programming is covered with false memory.

O'NEILL
You knew this threat was out there?

MARTOUF
Anise has presented her theory to the High Council, but it is only conjecture. The existence of this technology is thus far unconfirmed.

O'NEILL
Now, you see, this is just the kind of irresponsible, uncooperative…

ANISE
I agree, Colonel. Unfortunately, the High Council did not. Despite the fact that I documented three incidents within the last two months. Otherwise healthy Tok'ra operatives suffered sudden extreme behaviour episodes, each ending in suicide.

O'NEILL
And no red flags went up for anyone?

MARTOUF
A weapon like this had not been used before.

CARTER
So the person in question doesn't know what's going to happen?

ANISE
No, they're apparently unaware their minds had been tampered with. The instruction seemed to be triggered by an audio or visual signal.

DANIEL
Obviously, the High Councillor was the target.

ANISE
Apparently, when Major Graham was introduced to Per'sus, the programming took over. He would have been unable to control his actions after that.

CARTER
But this is theoretical?

ANISE
It is difficult to prove because of the lack of evidence. I believe violent self-destructive behaviour is an integral part of the programming meant to ensure that result.

DANIEL
How exactly does one get turned into a Zatarc?

ANISE
The programming only seems to require moments of access to the victims.

Carter, what's up?

CARTER
Could we have a moment alone please? Thanks.

[Others leave Carter and O'Neill alone in the lab.]

O'NEILL
Carter, undo this.

[Carter undoes the head restraint.]

O'NEILL
What's going on?

CARTER
We're not Zatarcs.

O'NEILL
How do you know?

CARTER
The machine thinks we have false memories, but we don't. We were lying.

O'NEILL
I wasn't lying.

The Outer Limits Season 4 Episode 12

Fear Itself

Aired Friday 9:00 PM Apr 10, 1998 on Showtime

Episode Summary

For as long as he can remember, Bernard Selden (Ayre Gross) has been haunted by a paralyzing fear. It started when he was six, when he set a fire that killed his four-year-old sister and today, at 27, the fear clings to him like a blanket. But, Dr. Adam Pike (Jeffrey Demunn) has hope for a cure. He has diagnosed Bernard's condition and believes that if he can isolate the part of the brain responsible for fear, the amyglada, he can cure him. The series of injections and radiation designed to build a layer of calcium around the amyglada produces stunning results; Bernard's fear recedes. He even starts a relationship with his neighbor Lisa (Tanya Allen). But there are side effects. Now, Bernard can use his brain to make others feel the kind of crippling fear he used to feel. He is still a prisoner of the past, haunted by images of Mr. Wilkes (Alex Diakun), the owner of the foster home where Bernard's sister died. It is a terrible risk, but Bernard knows that if he is to be truly cured, he must go back to the day when the fear began and discover the truth.

What are you talking about?

CARTER
Something neither one of us can admit given our working relationship, our military ranks?

[Long pause]

O'NEILL
Oh! Oh. That.

CARTER
Sir, we weren't telling the whole truth, and that's why the machine thinks our memories are false.
