INT—CONTROL ROOM, SGC

[Daniel wanders into the Control Room.]

DANIEL
What's up?

CARTER
Cold dialing program made a positive hit on P2X-416.

DANIEL
I wonder why.

CARTER
Looks like the locals have unburied the Stargate since the computer last dialed.

United States Air Force Colonel Jack O'NEILL
Now see, that's what I don't understand. How does the computer know how to do that?

CARTER
It doesn't, sir. I created the cold dialing software to periodically redial cartouche Stargate addresses that hadn't connected the first time. This is our first hit.

O'NEILL
(seeming less than impressed)
Oh.

CARTER
Receiving MALP telemetry…now.

[The camera on the MALP shows them the planet. Nyan wanders into view.]

YOUNG WOMAN
(off camera)
Nyan? What is it?

NYAN
I don't know.

[He walks off camera.]

DANIEL
Can you, uh, can you follow him?

[The camera turns to show both Nyan and the young women he is with. Daniel puts on an earpiece to talk to them through the MALP.]

DANIEL
Hello Nyan.

EXT—STARGATE CLEARING, PLANET (DAY)

DANIEL
(through the MALP) Don't be afraid. My name is Daniel Jackson.

NYAN
Are you a mechanical life form?

DANIEL
No, I'm communicating with you through that device.

NYAN
From where?

DANIEL
From another planet.

YOUNG WOMAN
This is a trick. We must report this Nyan.

NYAN
MALLIN. I think we've found the gateway.

MALLIN
There is no gateway. That is Optrican legend.

NYAN
Well then how do you explain this?

MALLIN
This could be very dangerous, Nyan. Do you realise what this would mean?

NYAN
It would mean we were wrong. And the Optricans were right.

EXT—STARGATE CLEARING, PLANET (DAY)

[Daniel and Carter exit the Stargate carrying a naquada reactor, followed by Teal'c and O'Neill. The wormhole closes behind them. Daniel approaches Nyan, who is waiting for them.]

DANIEL
Hello Nyan.

NYAN
You're human.

DANIEL
Yes. I'm, uh, Daniel Jackson, the person you were talking to before. This is Major Carter, Colonel Jack O'Neill and Teal'c. We're from a planet called Earth.

[Nyan appears speechless.]

DANIEL
You alright?

NYAN
Then the legend is true.

DANIEL
What, uh, what legend is that?

NYAN
The Optricans believed that humans were brought to this planet by aliens that traveled through a gateway. But during the upheaval the gateway was buried and things could no longer come through.

DANIEL
What was the upheaval?

NYAN
A period of violent earthquakes and uh, volcanic eruptions covering most of this continent. About two thousand years ago.

CARTER
So if the Stargate has been buried for that long, how did you know where to look for it?

NYAN
I was not looking for it. I was hoping to find a primitive settlement that was here before the upheaval. I was hoping to prove the Bedrosian theory.

O'NEILL
What's that?

NYAN
That human life was created on Bedrosia ... without a gateway.

O'NEILL
Ah.

CARTER
So this, this country is called Bedrosia?

NYAN
This continent.

DANIEL
And then who are the Optricans?

NYAN
A rival continent.

O'NEILL
Rival as in…what?

NYAN
We believe that we were created on this continent and the Optricans believe their holy gateway is on this continent. Therefore we've been at war for decades.

O'NEILL
Ok. Carter, you wanna make sure the reactor's all hooked up? Just in case.
(to Nyan)
Mind if I ask how close to the front lines we might be?

EXT—STARGATE CLEARING, PLANET (DAY)

[O'Neill, Carter and Daniel are kneeling before guards who are holding lance-like weapons on them.]

O'NEILL
(to a guard)
Do you believe we come in peace?

[The guard ignores him.]

O'NEILL
(to a second guard)
Got a commanding officer around here?

[The man also ignores him.]

O'NEILL
(sotto voice)
Wow, tough crowd.

CARTER
What happened to Nyan?

O'NEILL
I'd imagine he's saving his own butt right about now.

EXT—WOODS, PLANET (DAY)

[Teal'c is still hiding in the woods when he sees a guard searching for him. The guard turns away, but Teal'c senses another man creeping up behind him. He turns and fires and shoots the second man, who also fires his weapon and catches Teal'c in the face. The guard is killed, while Teal'c goes down clutching his face.]

EXT—STARGATE CLEARING, PLANET (DAY)

[A man exits one of the shuttlecraft. He appears to be the commander in charge.]

COMMANDER
Mallin. You said there were aliens here.

[She approaches him from inside the shuttlecraft.]

MALLIN
Yes, sir. Those people came through the gateway.

COMMANDER
No, they didn't. It's a trick. A contrivance.

MALLIN
Perhaps. But one of those aliens named Daniel, he talked to Nyan through that machine that came through the circle.

[He turns to Mallin.]

COMMANDER
The shuttlecraft will take you to my base. We will question you further on this matter.

[Mallin is taken into the shuttlecraft by a guard, and two more flank their commander as he walks over to the captured members of SG-1.]

COMMANDER
Either this Nyan fired at my craft or another Optrican is out there. Either way I want them found.

SOLDIER
Yes, sir.

[The commander's aide takes a box containing a very large needle.]

O'NEILL
Ok, that's a needle.

[The guard behind him touches him with his weapon, causing O'Neill a jolt of pain. The aide then sticks the needle into the side of O'Neill's neck.]

O'NEILL
Ow.

COMMANDER
Which of you is Daniel?

O'NEILL
I'm in command. Colonel Jack O'Neill here.

COMMANDER
I am unfamiliar with that Optrican designation.

CARTER
We're not Optrican. We're explorers from another planet.

DANIEL
We traveled through the Stargate.

COMMANDER
This type of psychological warfare, simulating the Optrican gateway fallacy to undermine our most basic beliefs, will not work.

O'NEILL
Yeah, I know that could be hard to believe. So why don't you let us show you how the Stargate works and if you're still not convinced, we'll just take our stuff and go. Fair enough?

COMMANDER
(to the guards)
Erect a quarantine field.

[He starts to walk away.]

O'NEILL
Hey!

[The commander ignores him.]

SG-1 discovers a planet on which two locals just discovered the Stargate that had been buried for thousands of years. When the team goes through the gate, they meet one of the discoverers, Nyan, an archeologist that was looking for ancient villages. Nyan tells them that the planet is divided into two religions: one that believes that all life began on their planet, and one that believes that the first humans had been brought to the planet using a "gateway." Those two parties have been at war for decades. Unfortunately the Stargate seems to be in territory possessed by the ones that do not believe in the Stargate. Meanwhile the second scientist has warned the authorities and the army comes after the team. Only Teal'c escapes, and he is severely injured. The others are questioned by the army, who thinks they are enemy spies, and don't believe a word of what they say when they explain they came through the Stargate. Now it's up to Teal'c to rescue the rest of SG-1, but while trying to escape he was been shot by a native weapon and loses his eyesight...

1968 student demonstrations in Yugoslavia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Student protests were held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, as the first mass protest in Yugoslavia after the Second World War. Protests also broke out in other capitals of Yugoslav republics - Sarajevo, Zagreb and Ljubljana — but they were smaller and shorter than in Belgrade.

After youth protests erupted in Belgrade on the night of June 2, 1968, students of the Belgrade University went into a seven-day strike. Police beat the students and banned all public gatherings. Students then gathered at the Faculty of Philosophy, held debates and speeches on the social justice, and handed out copies of the banned magazine Student. Students also protested against economic reforms, which led to high unemployment and forced workers to leave the country and find work elsewhere.[citation needed]

The protests were supported by prominent public personalities, including film director Dušan Makavejev, stage actor Stevo Žigon, poet Desanka Maksimovic and university professors, whose careers ran into problems because of their links to the protests.

President Josip Broz Tito gradually stopped the protests by giving in to some of the students’ demands and saying that "students are right" during a televised speech on June 9. But in the following years, he dealt with the leaders of the protests by imprisoning students (Vlado Mijanovic, Milan Nikolic, Pavlusko Imsirovic, Lazar Stojanovic and others) and by sacking critical professors from university and Communist party posts.

INT—CAVE, PLANET

TEAL'C
What do your people intend to do with my friends?

NYAN
They are evidence that everything my people believe in is wrong and that everything the enemy believes is right and that is not an easy thing for military minds to digest.

TEAL'C
Then they will kill my friends and destroy the Stargate and deny this event ever occurred.

NYAN
Probably.

TEAL'C
We must soon depart.

NYAN
To do what?

TEAL'C
Rescue them.

NYAN
You're still blind.

TEAL'C
I will manage.

[Nyan reaches forward and snatches his staff weapon from him.]

Teal'c
Nyan!

NYAN
You will?

[Nyan gives him back the weapon.]

NYAN
I will not be part of a suicide mission. This device only works within the first thirty hours. Do you want my help or not?

TEAL'C
You wish to use me to further your scientific aspirations, do you not?

NYAN
You are proof that my theories have been all wrong…

TEAL'C
Then perhaps you would be better off if I were no longer alive.

NYAN
Teal'c, I'm a scientist. When I find evidence that my theories are wrong, it is as exciting as if they were correct. Scientific advance in either direction is still an advance.

TEAL'C
You sound like Daniel Jackson.

The Modern Historian

2 June 2010

On this day in history: Belgrade student revolt, 1968

In the late 1960s, student dissatisfaction was not solely confined to capitalist countries. Many students in Yugoslavia shared similar concerns with their fellows at universities in France, the United States, and other countries that had seen campus revolts. The students of the New Belgrade campus resented the privileges of the party elite, and this resentments boiled over on the night of 2nd June 1968.

A popular theatre company were booked to play the university. The students requested that they perform at the university's large open-air amphitheatre but instead authorities arranged for them to play a smaller venue and only make seats available to youth members of the ruling Communist party. On the night of the show, a large group students gathered outside the theatre and attempted to force their way in. When the police drove them out again they reacted by throwing stones at the theatre windows and smashing its doors.

The police responded by sending in a fire-engine to clear the streets, but the students managed to turn it over and set fire to it. They also started turning cars over to form barricades, as they had seen done by Parisian students on the television news. As the police pressed forward the retreated to the university campus where they discussed how to proceed.

The next day, around four thousand students decide to march on the centre of Belgrade to air their grievances: their disgust with the inequalities of the socialist state; their concerns about unemployment; their demand for establishment of real democracy. Halfway along the route, they find their way blocked by thousands of armed police, who fire into the crowd. The ensuing battle creates around seventy casualties.

That afternoon about ten thousand students occupy the Philosophy and Sociology Faculty on the New Belgrade campus and draw up a list of demands. Meanwhile, the streets of Belgrade fill with riot police instructed to squash any further demonstrations. Over the following days many of professors and other faculty staff join with the students in their occupation. Tensions rise - the press demands swift and merciless action against the students and on the 9th June police surround the university. But then, to widespread surprise, President Tito intervenes.

In a television address, he welcomes the students' criticism of the state and endorses their programme of reform. His words defuse the situation, the media performs a volte-face and the riot police disappear. The majority of students are jubilant, but a small hardcore of student activists continue to express their concerns and following another speech Tito, in which he denounced extremism, riot police moved in and cleared the Philosophy and Sociology Faculty on the 20th June. Slowly and surely the status quo was restored.

Yugoslav Protest: Student Rebellion in Belgrade, Zagreb, and Sarajevo in 1968

Madigan Fichter

Abstract

In June 1968, Yugoslav university students launched strikes and demonstrations condemning police brutality and university conditions and critiquing the apparent failure of self-managing socialism. The "June events" show that the demonstrators were active participants in a global movement but also heavily influenced by local context, practices, and ideas. Whereas Yugoslav youth engaged with, drew from, and ignored the activities of other student movements, authorities reacted to youth rebellion by insisting that the majority of the protesters were showing support for state policies and that the most incorrigible were influenced by, or agents of, foreign entities. Thus, the state reproduced an artificially rigid boundary between east and west as well as between good socialist youth and enemy agents. This article decenters the west as the standard of youth rebellion, considering it in conjunction with but not in comparison to Yugoslavia. It approaches the Cold War world as characterized by the transfer of ideas and practices, not just the clash of civilizations.

Horror of the Blood Monsters (1970)

Plot

Synopsis

Prologue: Infected vampire blood was carried to earth millions of years ago by the Tubaton, vampire men from a distant galaxy.

Dr Rynning [John Carradine], an aging scientist, is leading a space expedition into Spectrum, an unknown solar system that he discovered. Along the way, the XB-13 runs into a meteor storm and loses contact with ground controllers, Dr Manning [Robert Dix] and his assistant Valerie [Vicki Volante]. Fortunately, neither Dr Rynning or any of the crew, which includes Comnander Steve Bryce [Bruce Powers], Captain Bob Scott [Fred Meyers], Willy [Joey Benson], and Linda [Britt Semand], are hurt, but the XB-13 is forced to make an emergency landing on an unknown planet in order to make repairs. Fortunately, the planet on which they land has an atmosphere exactly like earth, with the exception of some chromatic radiation that makes it change colors.

While Dr Rynning waits in the spaceship (he has a heart condition that could cause him to experience a coronary attack in the new atmosphere), the rest of the crew goes exploring. The planet seems to be inhabited solely by prehistoric creatures until they happen upon two groups of cavemen who appear to be fighting each other. Suddenly, a girl wearing a white skin (that looks amazing like a prehistoric bathing suit) runs past them, screaming as she is chased by three of the cavemen. Willy tackles her and, while the girl is knocked out, Linda implants a "communicator" in her brain so that she can understand and speak English. When she comes to, she identifies herself as Malian [Jennifer Bishop] and tells them the story of her people, the peace-loving Tagani, who are hunted by the blood-thirsty Tubatons. At this very moment, the Tagani are engaged in a fierce battle with the Tubaton, from whom Malian was running.

Meanwhile, Manning and Valerie are having sex. Attached to their heads are electrodes that lead to a machine with a lot of multicolored tubular lights, a machine that supposedly give the best sex ever. Unfortunately, Manning is too worried about the XB-13 and promises to return a bit later and, this time, turn the machine up to the highest setting.

Malian mentions how some of the Taganis are trying to get to the cave where they can get the "firewater" needed to keep their protective fires going. Cmdr Steve thinks that "firewater" might refer to petroleum, which Rynning says can be distilled for rocket coolant, so Malian leads them to the cave where they fill two canisters that Cpt Bob has brought from the spaceship. Steve and Linda then carry the oil back to the ship, while Willy and Bob attempt to return Malian to the Tagani. However, Malian doesn't want to go back to the Tagani without Willy. As Willy and Malian are saying goodbye to each other, Bob is attacked and killed by a Tubaton. Willy and Malian try to make it back to the ship, but Willy suddenly passes out.

Rynning orders Steve and Linda to immediately return to the ship. It's a matter of life or death. Steve sends Linda on but goes back to find Bob and Willy. Along the way, he meets with Malian who leads him to dead Bob and passed out Willy. Steve carries Willy back to the ship, where Rynning informs them that their blood tests reveal that the white corpuscles are devouring the red corpuscles due to a deadly virus in the planet's radiation-polluted air. All the people on the planet are doomed. Fortunately, the virus can't survive in the clean air of the earth, but it is necessary to immediately leave the doomed planet.

"This was a highly civilized and brilliant society at one time. It wasn't enough for them. Not only did they have to acknowledge having such weapons...they had to use them. I have no doubt we'll be equally brilliant one day." --Dr Rynning

Richard Nixon

XXXVII President of the United States: 1969 - 1974

371 - Letter of Sympathy About the Death of Harold B. Lee.

December 27, 1973

Dear President Kimball:

Mrs. Nixon and I were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Harold B. Lee. All Americans mourn the loss of this dedicated President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and we send our heartfelt sympathy to the members of the Church and to President Lee's family.

As President of the Church, and as an educator, missionary, businessman, and public official, President Lee's influence for good has been deeply felt. The Church's successful welfare program that began in the 1930's gives just one example of how President Lee's administrative and organizational skills combined with his faith and courage to bring hope and inspiration to millions in our Nation and in our world.

For my own part, I knew him as a warm and generous friend whose counsel and prayers I have valued greatly. While we will miss his presence among us, the greatest tribute we can pay to his life will be to carry on his mission of concern and compassion for mankind. Mrs. Nixon and I know the sadness that you and the members of the Church must feel at this time, but we also feel a warmth and pride in the life that President Lee has shared with us, and the knowledge that his good work will surely live on.

Sincerely,

RICHARD NIXON

NYAN
We can't get to them. Rigars's set up a quarantine field and as soon as he finds the soldier you killed…

SOLDIER
They were starting to dig here.

RIGAR
Finish for them. I want to know what's in there.

[He heads over to his aide.]

AIDE
I have the results from blood analysis. There's a ninety-eight percent correspondence. They are definitely human. But none of them are showing a particle match from the Bedrosian Central Registry.

RIGAR
Then it proves they are Optrican.

[The woman looks unconvinced.]

RIGAR
Does it not?

[She doesn't answer.]

RIGAR
Say what you were thinking.

AIDE
What if they are telling the truth? What if it is the gateway and the Optricans are right?

RIGAR
No, it's a lie.

AIDE
How can you be sure?

RIGAR
I am sure because we have not spent our lives praying to a god who does not exist and many of our people have not lost their lives fighting a meaningless war. I won't accept that. I have studied the book of Nefertum word for word, cover to cover. It is the truth.

AIDE
What if it's not?

RIGAR
It is the truth. We began here. That device is a fabrication to fake the Optrican gateway myth.

AIDE
To what end?

RIGAR
To sow the seeds of doubt among our people. To create dissention from within. I will not allow our people to have their faith attacked in such a cynical way.

AIDE
What do you want to do?

RIGAR
We will not allow the events that have transpired here to leave this place.

AIDE
Then we must find this Nyan and the fourth ... Optrican.

RIGAR
Yes. And we'll find out what we can from the three we have in custody. Then we will dispose of them.

Nyan
I come here for shelter. We also store supplies here. Are you injured in addition to your eyes?

TEAL'C
I will be fine.

NYAN
You can sit here. Here.

[He helps Teal'c to sit and offers him a canteen.]

NYAN
It's water. It's amazing how one discovery can change everything. For years I've been searching for proof that we were created on this continent by Nefertum.

TEAL'C
Nefertum. The blue lotus blossom of Ra.

NYAN
He's represented in our texts by a blue lotus blossom. But what is Ra? And how do you know about Nefertum?

TEAL'C
Nefertum was an under System Lord to the one named Ra. It is with him whom I did battle.

NYAN
I don't understand. Nefertum was and is the creator of all of us. He created this planet and this great continent.

TEAL'C
Correction. Nefertum was an alien who most likely brought your people though the Stargate as slaves many thousands of years ago.

NYAN
That is what the Optricans say.

TEAL'C
They are correct.

NYAN
Oh dear Nefertum, this is blasphemy. If it is true, it could change everything. I must show my colleagues at the research academy.

TEAL'C
Can you be certain they will believe you?

NYAN
They are scientists as I am. They will realise they are wrong when presented with the evidence.

TEAL'C
Your military has the Stargate in its command.

NYAN
Not the gateway. You. You are the proof.
