She's sad because she knows that only the homosexuals of the United States Navy refer to It as having a gender. It's the only female they like.

RIM-2 Terrier
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Convair RIM-2 Terrier was a two-stage medium-range naval surface-to-air missile (SAM), and was among the earliest surface-to-air missiles to equip United States Navy ships. It underwent significant upgrades while in service, starting with a beam-riding system with 10-nautical-mile (19 km) range at a speed of Mach 1.8, and ending as a semi-active radar homing system with a range of 40 nmi (74 km) at speeds as high as Mach 3. It was replaced in service by the RIM-67 Standard ER (SM-1ER).
The Terrier was the primary missile system of most US Navy cruisers and guided missile frigates built during the 1960s.
The Terrier was replaced by the extended range RIM-67 Standard missile.

RIM-67 Standard
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RIM-67 Standard ER (SM-1ER/SM-2ER) is an extended range surface-to-air missile (SAM) and anti ship missile originally developed for the United States Navy (USN). The RIM-67 was developed as a replacement for the RIM-8 Talos, a 1950s system deployed on a variety of USN ships, and eventually replaced the RIM-2 Terrier as well, since it was of a similar size and fitted existing Terrier launchers and magazines. The RIM-66 Standard MR was essentially the same missile without the booster stage, designed to replace the RIM-24 Tartar. The RIM-66/67 series thus became the US Navy's universal SAM system, hence the "Standard Missile" moniker.
RIM-67A SM-1 Extended Range
The RIM-67A (SM-1ER Block I) was the Navy's replacement for RIM-8 Talos missile. Improved technology allowed the RIM-67 to be reduced to the size of the earlier RIM-2 Terrier missile. Existing ships with the Mk86 guided missile fire control system, or "Terrier" were adapted to employ the new missile in place of the older RIM-2 Terrier missile. Ships that switched from the RIM-2 Terrier to the RIM-67A were still referred to as Terrier ships even though they were equipped with the newer missile.
RIM-67B and RIM-156 SM-2 Extended Range
The second generation of Standard missile, the Standard Missile 2, was developed for the Aegis combat system, and New Threat Upgrade program that was planned for existing Terrier and Tartar ships. The destroyer USS Mahan served as the test platform for the development of the CG/SM-2 (ER) missile program project. The principal change over the Standard missile 1 is the introduction of inertial guidance for each phase of the missile's flight except the terminal phase where semi-active homing was retained. This design change was made so that missiles could time share illumination radars and enable equipped ships to defend against saturation missile attacks.

Andrew Sterett
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Andrew Sterett (January 27, 1778 – June 9, 1807) was an officer in the United States Navy during the nation's early days. He saw combat during the Quasi-War with France and in the Barbary Wars, commanding the schooner USS Enterprise in both conflicts.
The Quasi-War
Sterett's first assignment was as Third Lieutenant of the USS Constellation, under Captain Thomas Truxtun, which was sent to do battle with French vessels during the Quasi-War. He was commanding a gun battery when Constellation defeated and captured the French frigate Insurgente on 9 February 1799. Insurgente lost 29 dead and 41 wounded; the only American loss was a seaman run through by Sterett's saber in a summary execution, the seaman, Neal Harvey, having abandoned his post in a panic. Upon Constellation's arrival back in Baltimore, the anti-federalist press, who opposed the military in general and the Quasi-War in particular, seized upon this incident as an example of the Navy's "arrogance and cold-bloodedness". The objections intensified when Sterett was heard to say, "We put men to death for even looking pale on this ship." The Navy, however, soon promoted Sterett to the rank of first lieutenant.
A year later, Sterett was involved in a battle to a draw with the 54-gun French frigate Vengeance. Soon afterward, he took command of the schooner USS Enterprise where he remained through the end of the Quasi-War, capturing the privateer Amour de la Patrie on 24 December 1800.
The Barbary Wars
After resupplying in Baltimore, Sterett sailed Enterprise to the Barbary Coast in June, 1801, as part of a force under Commodore Richard Dale, in the first stages of the Barbary Wars.
On 1 August 1801, Enterprise under Sterett's command defeated the 14-gun Tripoli, a Tripolitan corsair. After twice faking surrender, Tripoli suffered 30 dead and 30 wounded, including the Captain, Rais Mahomet Rous, and the first officer. Enterprise suffered no casualties. Since there was no formal declaration of war, Enterprise was under orders not to take prizes. After her crew was ordered to dump its guns overboard, Tripoli was allowed to sail home, where her captain was humiliated and punished.
Enterprise was sent back to Baltimore with dispatches after this engagement. While there, on the recommendation of Congress, Sterett was presented by President Thomas Jefferson with a sword in gratitude of the victory over the Tripoli. Enterprise's crew was also rewarded with an extra month's pay. The ship returned to the Mediterranean in November 1802.
Sterett turned over command of the Enterprise to Stephen Decatur in April 1803. He was then promoted to Master Commandant and offered the command of a brig which was under construction.
Final Voyage
In August 1806 Sterett was hired by Baltimore ship owner Lemuel Taylor to captain Taylor's sloop Warren on a trading voyage to the North West coast of America and China (though there were rumors that the ship was actually headed to the West Indies or South America with a cargo of contraband). Taylor selected Procopio Pollock, son of Revolutionary War financier Oliver Pollock, as the Warren's supercargo (cargo master). Both men were given sealed orders that were not to be opened until a certain point in the voyage.
On 12 September the Warren sailed out of Baltimore with a complement of about 112 men, including four officers (all previously known to Sterett. In early December, off the coast of Brazil, Sterett and Pollock opened their instructions. To his horror Sterett discovered that Taylor's orders to Pollock gave Pollock control over not only the cargo but operational control of the vessel as well; they stated that the ship was to proceed to the west coast of South America, where Pollock was to engage in trade as he saw fit. These orders, different from those given to Sterett and in violation of the articles of employment signed by the crew, caused a violent argument between Sterett and Pollock. Sterett seems to have been driven into a frenzy bordering on madness; he was heard by members of the crew to say that before he would follow such orders he would kill either Pollock or himself. About a week later, after apparently trying unsuccessfully to shoot Pollock, Captain Sterett retired to his cabin alone and shot himself in the head. He lingered in agonizing pain for two weeks before dying on 9 January 1807

STS-82 Day 10 Highlights
Back to STS-82 Flight Day 09 Highlights:
On Thursday, February 20, 1997, 6:30 a.m. CST, STS-82 MCC Status Report # 19 reports:
With Discovery's flight control systems checked out and ready to support the Shuttle's return to Earth, the seven astronauts stowed their cabin and prepared for tomorrow's planned landing at the Kennedy Space Center. Landing is scheduled for 12:50 a.m. Central time with a backup opportunity an hour and a half later at 2:32 a.m. The weather forecast reflects a slight chance of rain over the water at the time of landing at the Florida spaceport.
Before wrapping up what is expected to be their final day in orbit, the astronauts held a press conference to discuss the flight, which saw a record-tying five spacewalks conducted to service the Hubble Space Telescope for the second time.
Commander Ken Bowersox and Pilot Scott Horowitz tested the orbiter's aerodynamic surfaces that will be used once Discovery reenters the Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. The traditional hot-fire test of Discovery's steering jets was not required since 31 of the 38 jets were fired during the time the Hubble Space Telescope was housed in the Shuttle's cargo bay. The remaining jets will either be fired during normal operations tonight or will be tested during deorbit preparations.
The crew is scheduled to go to bed at 8:25 this morning and wake up at 4:25 this afternoon. If all goes as planned, Discovery's payload bay doors will be closed at about 9 p.m. with a final go-no decision for the first KSC landing opportunity expected at about 11:15 p.m. There are two landing opportunities at both KSC and the backup landing site at Edwards Air Force Base, California.
Discovery is currently orbiting at an altitude of 365 statute miles following an orbital adjustment maneuver to set the Shuttle up for its landing opportunities late tonight. All of Discovery'' systems are in excellent condition.
On Thursday, February 20, 1997, 6:00 p.m. CST, STS-82 MCC Status Report # 20 reports:
With a successful mission behind them, the STS-82 crew is getting set to return home to the Kennedy Space Center.in the early morning hours Friday. Landing is planned for 12:50 a.m. CST with backup opportunities on succeeding orbits.
The crew began its final day in space by sending morning greetings to the Mission Control team in the form of the song."Sloop John B." by the Beach Boys. The control team in return told the crew it was time to "get your motor running" with the song "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf.
Once the crew has completed its post-sleep activities, astronauts will begin preparations for tonight's deorbit and landing opportunities. The first deorbit opportunity is on orbit 148 with an engine firing at 11:38 p.m. CST followed by landing at 12:50 a.m. Landing on the second opportunity would occur at 2:32 a.m. There are landing opportunities at the backup landing site at Edwards Air Force Base, California, at 2:23 and 4:04 a.m. Central time.
According to forecasters, the weather conditions in Florida look promising, but there is a slight chance off-shore showers.
If all goes as planned, Discovery's payload bay doors will be closed at about 9 p.m. with a final go-no go decision for the first KSC landing opportunity expected at about 11:15 p.m..
Discovery is currently orbiting at an altitude of 365 statute miles with all systems in excellent condition.

(Kirk is checking each room when he sees a young woman walking backwards from a junction, arms outstretched as she almost dances.)
KIRK: Who are you?
ODONA: Odona. Yes, my name is Odona. Why did you bring me here?
KIRK: What are you doing on my ship?
ODONA: Is this entire ship yours?
KIRK: Not my personal property, but I'm the captain.
ODONA: And you have it all to yourself?
KIRK: It seems, at the moment, we have it all to ourselves.
(He grabs her arm.)
ODONA: You're hurting me, Captain
KIRK: Kirk. I'm sorry. James Kirk. And I didn't bring you here.
ODONA: If you didn't bring me
KIRK: That's right. Who has brought you here?
ODONA: I don't know.
KIRK: You? What happened before you came here? Try to remember. It's important.
ODONA: It seems I was standing in a, yes. I was standing in a large auditorium crowded with people. Thousands pressed in against me. I could hardly breathe. I was fighting for oxygen, screaming to get out.
KIRK: Don't be afraid.
ODONA: I'm not, but you are troubled.
KIRK: I seem to be the only one of my crew left on board the Enterprise. Four hundred and thirty, and I, apparently, am the only one left.
ODONA: I'm sorry. I wish I could help.
KIRK: Maybe you can. Tell me the rest. You were fighting for oxygen, screaming to get out of there.
ODONA: And then I, suddenly I was here on this, on your ship. And there was all this space. And the freedom. I just wanted to float.

USS Sterett (CG-31)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Sterett (DLG/CG-31) was a Belknap-class destroyer leader / cruiser. She was the third ship to be named for Master Commandant Andrew Sterett (1778–1807), who served during the Quasi-War with France and the Barbary Wars. She was launched as DLG-31, a frigate, and reclassified a cruiser (CG) on 30 June 1975.
On 7 January 1972, Sterett traveled on her second tour of duty off the Vietnamese coast. She departed for the Gulf of Tonkin and remained on PIRAZ station when on 21 February 1972 became the first United States Navy ship to direct the downing of a MiG-21 by Air Force Combat Air Patrol. During her second line period of the deployment, Sterett participated in the downing of two more MiGs (30 March) and brought down another with a salvo of Terrier missiles during the Dong Hoi engagement on 19 April. Later on that day, she launched a second salvo of Terriers at an unidentified target, probably a Styx surface-to-surface missile, destroying it in midair.
