I went to see "Gladiator" when it premiered, with some co-workers. I told Langdon after the movie that it made me wish I had a woman at home to go to. I believe the movie “Gladiator,” as well as “Cast Away,” reflect my escape across Africa in 1986 and 1987 after being shot down by anti-aircraft fire. I was a POW for about two months until I escaped into the desert and made my way, I think, to Kenya, where I was then transported by the USS Stark FFG-31 to Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. I have been thinking that the Stark was attacked specifically because I was onboard and the enemy didn’t want me to survive the trek across Africa. I can’t remember for certain, but I think I was captured again by locals in Africa and forced to fight in a cage not unlike the portrayal of Russell Crowe in his movie.

The part I like about this episode is how "Homer" remembers differently the party while the other people were embarassed by his behavior. I believe this represents that I lost consciousness at the wedding ceremony for Phoebe and me on 7/21/1987 and the people who didn't know about my grueling test of survival in Africa thought I must have passed out from drinking too much alcohol the night before at my bachelor party. The 1991 "Navy SEALs" features a wedding scene and I believe that is relevant to our 7/21/1987 wedding. I have also been thinking there was a balcony in the chapel we were in and there was another group of people there for the wedding that the people on the main floor didn't know about. At that time on 7/21/1987, I was probably still in relatively bad shape and recovering from a wound that the doctors thought would require the amputation of my leg. I have been thinking I was hit on the leg with some kind of meat cleaver knife and the scar I have there matches that type of blade.

Marge and Homer throw a party. Homer gets drunk and humiliates himself by leering at Maude Flanders, telling off total strangers, and stumbling over furniture. The next day at church, Marge signs up for a weekend retreat of marriage counseling hosted by Reverend Lovejoy and his wife. Marge recruits Grampa for the weekend to babysit since the babysitter she previously hired was emotionally scarred by Bart when he was a baby.
Marge and Homer throw a party. Homer gets drunk and humiliates himself by leering at Maude Flanders, telling off total strangers, and stumbling over furniture. Homer finds out that the retreat will be held at Catfish Lake and packs his fishing equipment, despite Marge telling him that the retreat will be resolving their differences. On the way there, he learns of the legendary catfish, General Sherman, named after the Civl War era Union general. The only known picture of Sherman resembles the famous Loch Ness Monster photograph.
Meanwhile, at home, left with Grampa, Bart and Lisa decide to hold a party. At the lake the next morning Homer tries to sneak away to go fishing. Marge is upset that Homer would choose fishing over their marriage. Homer takes a walk instead. On the dock, Homer finds an abandoned fishing pole. The pole, with General Sherman on the line, yanks him off the pier into a small rowboat, and onto the lake. From their cabin window, Marge watches Homer battle General Sherman.
Bart and Lisa's party has ended and the house is a total mess. Watching Grampa cry and fearing that he will get in trouble, they frantically clean up the house, not knowing he was pretending.
Marge attends the workshops alone while Homer catches his fish. When he returns, Marge tells him their marriage is in trouble if he values fish more than her. To prove that he loves Marge more he lets the fish go (despite battling it for several hours) and they return together to a clean house.

Murray seeks $1 billion for VA

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray yesterday sent a letter to the White House asking President Bush to shore up a $1 billion shortfall in Department of Veterans Affairs health-care funding.
Murray, D-Wash., said the deficit could be addressed in an emergency-spending bill in the Senate in the days before the Fourth of July recess.
The shortfall for the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, was disclosed by VA officials last week, prompting Murray to accuse the Bush administration of either "deliberate misdirection or gross incompetence."
Yesterday, Murray held a rally outside the Puget Sound VA Health Care System hospital in Seattle

This actress was 33 years, 4.59 months, old on 4/14/1986. I recognize that date 4/14/1986 as when I escaped the Libyan prison where I was captive as a Prisoner of War. My family thought I had been killed that day when the prison was bombed.
Merkerson portrayed the fiancee of the U.S. Navy SEAL operative that was killed in the 1990 "Navy SEALs," although Phoebe and I have been married since 1979. This aspect might represent something of a composite notion in that I have been close to getting killed on many occasions since we have known each other and that she has never known the full story of my military activities.
