In case you missed it, the Federal Emergency Management Agency tested its first wireless alert system on Wednesday - a new feature that will allow President Donald Trump to send emergency messages to the majority of American cellphones.
The wireless emergency alerts (WEA) will come in three forms: presidential alerts during a national emergency, warnings about extreme weather and other threatening emergencies in your local area, and AMBER alerts. The WEAs will have a special tone and vibration that will be repeated twice.
The test alert messages, sent on Wednesday at 2:18 p.m. Eastern time, read “Presidential Alert,” followed by “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
It is not possible to opt out of receiving the presidential messages, which by law are not allowed to be political in any way. Users can opt out of the other WEA messages about imminent threats and AMBER alerts by adjusting the settings on their mobile device, FEMA said.
More than 100 mobile carriers are participating in the program, the agency said, meaning nearly all cellphones will receive the alerts. Older models that are not WEA-capable will not.

Millions of cellphones across the U.S. buzzed at 2:18 p.m. ET on Wednesday in the first test of the new "Presidential Alert" wireless warning system.
“THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed," the alert noted.
It was soon followed by a more familiar test — the Emergency Alert System test on televisions and radios.
WHY DID I GET THIS ALERT?
You received Wednesday's alert because you have a cellphone and your service provider is one of the more than 100 service providers that participate in the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system, which is run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
FEMA sent the alert as the first test of the system to push an alert to cellphones across the U.S. — what the agency is labeling a "Presidential Alert."
WHAT MAKES THIS ALERT PRESIDENTIAL?
The header "Presidential Alert" indicated that this particular message is meant to go out across the country during a national emergency. Other alerts are more local, notifying people of severe weather or Amber Alerts.
While this is the fourth test of the nationwide TV and radio alert, it is the first test of the nationwide wireless alert, FEMA said on its website.

That is a curious expression "Admiral Kirk" makes at 00:18:00 in the 1979 "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." It seems to be in response to a space docker worker that is traveling along in a spacesuit ahead of the shuttle craft that "Admiral Kirk" is in, which reminds me of those thoughts I was writing about. I wrote that I was thinking, and partially visualizing, although nothing similar to that scene, of where my intra-comet spacecraft was destroyed just as I was almost clear of the comet on my first return to my Orion ship to pick up another round of ordnance to deliver to the comet surface. After my shuttle spacecraft was destroyed, I had to travel to my Orion ship by spacesuit and some kind of propulsion device that I constructed from the wreckage.

Millions of Americans-men, women, and children-are planning to see and participate in Bicentennial activities. An expected twenty million visitors from abroad will also participate.
The overwhelming majority of those involved in Bicentennial related activities will travel on the Nation's roadways. Since the beginning of the automobile age, over two million Americans have died on our Nation's highways. This exceeds the combined total of all the fatalities suffered in all the wars that this country has fought since its founding.
The Congress has requested (H.J. Res. 726) that the necessity for highway safety be recognized by Presidential proclamation so that our Bicentennial year does not become one of unparalleled carnage and slaughter on the highways.
