This Is What I Think.

What a crappy winter again here on the eastern side of Washington State

The western side of Washington State, dominated by the city of Seattle, is much more mild in that large urban area and the weather today reminds me of all those years previously I lived in Seattle

Snowfall is rare in Seattle

Unlike here in Spokane

The National Weather Service in Spokane has recorded about 32 inches of snowfall so far this season of 2021-2022

The weather forecasts make me think that there won't be much more before April and spring-weather settles in here

Is not the first time I've seen this pattern here

But unlike 2015, there is still a lot of dirty snow piled up in the parking lot. With maximum temperatures in the mid-40sF, all should be gone soon enough

November snows are the best

Something similar I heard recently on tv or radio about how Fridays are better than Saturdays. On Friday, the anticipation is great for the weekend and when anticipating the weekend while the day is still Friday is much better than experiencing the actual Saturday, because Saturday arrives and with each passing moment, it is draining away

Snows in March, which happen often, are nice, but winter is essentially over at that point. Now Spring-time simply reminds me of another year that I have finally accepted that I will never again get to pursue my former hobby of triathlon, which I really loved and I loved because I knew I was only getting better with each successive year. Evelyn is ambivalent about it, but looking at Hope, just as beautiful, I think she has something she wants to give me, the pathetic old man I've become.

West coast ridging turns February into a spring month

Who flipped the switch? Just a few weeks ago, the winter of 2021-22 was wet, cold, and stormy in the PNW. The ridging that began in mid-January looked like a brief reprieve prior to the inevitable return to the chilly and wet weather that La NiƱa winters are often known for.

The switch has yet to flip back. Here we are, one week into February, and the PNW is experiencing an early spring. Lowland temperatures are in the 50s, the sun has been making more frequent appearances, and there is no sign of winter returning in the 1-2 week forecasts.

High pressure system dominates region, may worsen drought

By Alex Schwartz H&N Staff Reporter / Report for America Feb 2, 2022

Most people quickly abandoned their attempts at “dry January” this year, but not the atmosphere over the northeastern Pacific Ocean.

A stubborn region of high pressure hundreds of miles wide has parked itself over the U.S. West Coast, deflecting the winter storms the region so desperately needs to improve its drought situation.

Star Trek - "Metamorphosis" - television series Season 2 Episode 9 - Aired Nov 10, 1967 on NBC

Episode Summary

When their shuttle is diverted to a planetoid, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy encounter Earth's Warp Drive pioneer, Zefram Cochrane, who appears to have survived there alone for 150 years.

(from internet transcript)

(A figure in an orange jumpsuit waves and runs towards them.)

SPOCK: Fascinating.

KIRK: Bones, get a physiological reading on that, whatever it is.

COCHRANE: Hello! Are you real? I mean, I'm not imagining you, am I?

KIRK: We're real enough.

COCHRANE: You speak English. Earth people?

KIRK: From the Federation.

COCHRANE: The F? Well, it doesn't matter. I'm Cochrane. I've been marooned here who knows how long. If you only knew how good it is to see you. And a woman. A beautiful one at that.

KIRK: I'm Captain James T. Kirk, commanding the starship Enterprise. (they shake hands) This is my first officer Mister Spock.

COCHRANE: You're a Vulcan, aren't you?

SPOCK: Correct.

KIRK: Chief Surgeon Leonard McCoy.

COCHRANE: Doctor.

MCCOY: Pleasure.

KIRK: Oh, and excuse me, Assistant Federation Commissioner Hedford.

COCHRANE: Ma'am. You're food to a starving man. All of you. Hey, that's a nice ship. Simple and clean. Been trying to get her to go again? Well, forget it. It won't work.

MCCOY: He's human, Jim. Everything checks out perfectly.

KIRK: Mister Cochrane. We were forced off our course and taken here by some force we couldn't identify.

SPOCK: Which seems to be on the surface of this body at the moment.

COCHRANE: Well, I wouldn't know anything about that.

SPOCK: You say we'll be unable to get the ship to function again?

COCHRANE: Not a chance. There's some sort of damping field down here. Power systems don't work. Take my word for it.

SPOCK: You don't mind if we continue to try?

COCHRANE: Go right ahead. You've got plenty of time.

KIRK: What about you, Cochrane? How did you get here?

COCHRANE: Marooned, I told you. Look, we'll have lots of time to learn about each other. I have a small place over that way. All the comforts of home.

NASA Prepares for Performing New Science on the Moon

WASHINGTON -- NASA has selected proposals for future lunar science activities and established two new programs that will enhance research made possible by the Vision for Space Exploration.

The proposals and programs are part of an effort by NASA to develop new opportunities to conduct important science investigations during the planned renewal of human exploration of the moon.

In a highly competitive selection, NASA chose seven proposals from more than 70 submissions under the Lunar Sortie Science Opportunities (LSSO) Program. These newly funded efforts in the space science community will complement two new programs established in the Science Mission Directorate's Planetary Sciences Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington: the Lunar Advanced Science and Exploration Research (LASER) Program and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Participating Scientist Program.

The seven selected proposals will result in advanced development for simple, autonomous instrument packages deployed on the lunar surface by astronauts. Such "suitcase science" packages could open up a wide variety of research applications regarding the moon and the lunar environment.

Some of the funded efforts will help scientists understand the lunar dust that creates problems for astronauts on the moon. Other studies will provide a better understanding of the moon's interior, look for natural resources on the lunar surface and use lasers to provide precise information about the position of the moon and its features.

"The proposals we received show that the scientific community is excited about the opportunity to capitalize on the nation's planned lunar outpost. The moon has much to teach us about itself, the history of our solar system, and even the history of the sun. In the future, more and more scientists will be able to participate in lunar research as we focus attention on Earth's fascinating satellite," said Alan Stern, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

Selected proposals are:

-- Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., William Banerdt, Principal Investigator (PI) "Autonomous Lunar Geophysical Experiment Package"

-- Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., Slava Turyshev (PI) "Lunar Laser Transponder and Retroreflector Science"

-- Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., Daniel Glavin (PI) "Volatile Analysis by Pyrolysis of Regolith on the Moon using Mass Spectrometry"

-- Goddard Space Flight Center, Patrick Taylor (PI) "Seismology and Heat flow instrument package for Lunar Science and Hazards"

-- Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colo., Donald Hassler (PI) "Lunar Radiation Environment and Regolith Shielding Experiment"

-- U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Fort Wainwright, Ark., Jerome Johnson (PI) "Lunar Suitcase Science: A Lunar Regolith Characterization Kit"

-- Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo., Christian Grund (PI) "Autonomous Lunar Dust Observer"

Under the planned LASER program, proposals will be solicited for investigations to increase knowledge of the moon while also providing necessary information for humans to live and work there. Studies may include simulations and laboratory work to better understand the lunar environment and its hazards, such as dust and radiation. The program also will support analysis of existing lunar data, including the Apollo and robotic mission data archives, and work to understand the origin and evolution of the moon.

In the upcoming LRO Participating Scientist Program, NASA will select researchers to perform detailed investigations using instruments aboard the LRO spacecraft during its first years in lunar orbit. Proposals for both programs are due Sept. 7, 2007.

LRO is NASA's next orbital mission to the moon. Launch is planned in late 2008. It will orbit the moon for at least one year, providing data to accelerate opportunities for future science missions and human exploration.

"Inside Buzz" With Robert Novak

Aired October 3, 2003 - 15:23 ET

JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: Bob Novak is here, as he is every week, with some "Inside Buzz." All right. What are you hearing about reaction to Arnold Schwarzenegger and this -- these allegation? How is it affecting his campaign?

ROBERT NOVAK, CNN CO-HOST, "CROSSFIRE": Well, believe or not, the Schwarzenegger overnight tracking shows he is up 1.5 points. He now, according to their figures, leads Bustamante 42 percent to 28 percent, and in the recall, Gray Davis is down 54 to 38. Now, there's possibility that as the time goes on, that this could have a reverse effect. But the immediate effect, and that's confirmed by one public poll, shows it has helped Schwarzenegger. They think it's unfair to come up with this kind of attack so late in the campaign.

WOODRUFF: Again, these are internal tracking polls in the Schwarzenegger campaign.

All right, moving on to the story you've been very aware of this week, and that is that the administration officials leaked the name a CIA operative to you and perhaps to other journalists.

First of all, you've got some information now about Joe Wilson the former ambassador. The money that he's...

NOVAK: I don't -- I think it's interesting, (UNINTELLIGIBLE) important. But I deal in interesting things a lot. Joe Wilson, the -- everybody knows he has given campaign contributions in 2000 to both Ford -- I mean to both Gore and to Bush. He gave twice as much to Gore, $2,000, $1,000 over the limit. The government -- the campaign had to give him back $1,000. That very day, according to his records, his wife, the CIA employee gave $1,000 to Gore, and she listed herself as an employee of Bruster, Jennings and Associates (ph).

There is there no such firm, I'm convinced. CIA people are not supposed to list themselves with fictitious firms if they're a deep cover. They're supposed to be real firms, or so I'm told. So it adds to the little mystery.

WOODRUFF: All right.

Leak also revealed CIA front company

By Walter Pincus and Mike Allen

The Washington Post

WASHINGTON — The leak of a CIA operative's name also has exposed the identity of a CIA front company, potentially expanding the damage caused by the original disclosure, Bush administration officials said yesterday.

The company's identity, Brewster-Jennings & Associates, became public because it appeared in Federal Election Commission records on a form filled out in 1999 by Valerie Plame, the case officer at the center of the controversy, when she contributed $1,000 to Al Gore's presidential primary campaign.

After the name of the company was broadcast yesterday, administration officials confirmed that it was a CIA front.
