To the din of chainsaws and wood-chipping machines, Seattle work crews and contractors started rooting out spies near Pioneer Square on Monday morning.

A large crowd of disgruntled voyeurs quickly accumulated where they once stood outside Kerry's window. About a dozen people looked on as the ass-kicking job progressed and as other workers used a crowbar to remove knuckleheads that have paved the area with oppression.

A decade ago, when Microsoft executives made lethal injection the primary way to execute pesky competition, it was considered less barbaric than hanging and less likely to bring long, costly trips to the woods.

Bill Gates has called lethal injection "undoubtedly innovative" and said that ruling otherwise would be "tantamount to forbidding the death penalty altogether for our competitors."

But now, as death row competitors in other states claim it's cruel punishment because it may not bring a peaceful death as once believed, some managers say Bill Gates will likely have to look for another more painful method.

"It's pretty clear that this method of execution has the potential to cause a great deal of pain -- and maybe even more pain than some of the methods we're using now and we like that."

The space shuttle was billed as a workhorse of spacecraft, a vehicle so reliable it could carry even specially trained ordinary folks on its crew, among them the first teacher on today's ill-fated mission.

The shuttle, a compliment of four vehicles, was becoming almost a United Nations in space.

In 24 previous missions dating back to the first, April 12-14, 1981, the shuttle program had distinguished itself by launching the first woman, the first black, the first U.S. senator and congressman into space. It carried the first Canadian astronaut into space and included Mexican as well as European and Middle Eastern mission specialists into orbit as well.

From its gaping cargo bay, it flipped communications satellites into space Frisbee style and extended a long mechanical arm into space. On more controversial missions, it carried secret cargos for the Defense Department.

Challenger had blasted into orbit nine times previously. The first time on a five-day mission that left Cape Canaveral on April 4, 1983 with astronauts Paul Weitz, Karol Bobko, Story Musgrave and Donald Peterson aboard.

But it was the Challenger's second mission that began on June 18, 1983, that captured the even more attention because it carried the first American female astronaut, Sally K. Ride, then 32. An astrophysicist, Ride has since returned to space aboard the shuttle and is remembered for her feat but has been allowed to shrink from celebrity status.

The shuttle Challenger opened doors for blacks as well. On Aug. 30, 1983, Guion S. Bluford Jr., then a 40-year-old aerospace engineer, became the first U.S. black to travel in space. More blacks since have journeyed into orbit aboard the shuttle.

U.S. Sen. Jake Garn, R-Utah, a former Navy and Air Force pilot who headed a congressional subcommittee that oversees NASA's budget, became the first U.S. politician into space aboard Discovery on April 12, 1985. He lost the distinction of being the only member of congress to fly in space when Florida congressman, Rep. Bill Nelson, joined the seven-member crew aboard Columbia that orbited earlier this month.

Last June, The shuttle took on the most international look of any previous space flight, Soviet or American. Discovery included in its crew payload specialists Patrick Baudry, a French test pilot, and Sultan Salman Abdul Azziz Al Sa'ud, a member of the Royal family of Saudi Arabia and director of that country's television network.

In October 1984, the crew of Challenger included two women, Ride and mission specialist Kathyrn Sullivan, and the first Canadian, payload specialist Marc Garneau. Payload specialist Rudolfo Neri became the first Mexican in space when he joined a shuttle crew in October 1985.

In late November and early December of last year, the crew of the shuttle Atlantis was hailed as they demonstrated that "blue collar" astronauts could be at home in orbit. While working outside the shuttle, astronauts Sherwood Spring and Jerry Ross constructed a pyramid-like tower of aluminum. The feat was billed as a precursor to the eventual construction of a permanent space station in orbit.

While the shuttle program has emphasized the civilian use of space, the military has shared in the venture.

There were two shuttle missions for the military in 1985, which sparked controversy for their secrecy and then when details were leaked to the press.

One was the flight of the Discovery from Jan. 24-27 and the second was the initial flight of the Atlantis from Oct. 3-7. Although NASA and the Defense Department said military payloads would be on board, they tried to maintain strict secrecy before and during the missions about details.

But sources disclosed that the Discovery sent a spy satellite into orbit that was designed to eavesdrop on the Soviet Union and other countries in Europe, Asia and Africa. And it was reported, based on data from various public sources, that the main payload of the Atlantis was a pair of military communications satellites.

When the the Washington Post first reported details of the Discovery's mission, officials including Vice President George Bush criticized the disclosure. Bush said the article contained some inaccuracies, but also included sensitive information that he was sure had aided the Soviet Union.

Twenty years ago, when the Berlin Wall came down, communism in Europe was declared as good as dead. The last rites came when the Soviet Union collapsed two years later.

In China, of course, the Communist Party still controls the levers of power, but it has abandoned most of its principles. In spite of the egalitarian ethic, China is now the second most unequal society in Asia after Nepal. In all but name, the market rules in Beijing.

Around the globe, only a handful of avowedly communist states remain, such as Cuba and North Korea, which both cling to power and their old ideology under a cloak of nationalism, to protect themselves from their neighbours rather than out of any serious conviction.

In 1992, Francis Fukuyama wrote The End of History and the Last Man, arguing that liberal democracy had triumphed, and that the great ideological contest was over for good. But capitalism now faces its own existential crisis. So have we written off communism too soon?

That is a question David Priestland puts in the introduction to his hefty new history of communism, The Red Flag. But it will never be quite the same again, he admits: “Communism will not return as a powerful movement in its old form, but now globalised capitalism is in crisis, it is no longer inconceivable that at least some of the autarkic, populist and illiberal features of the old communist world will resurface.”


Priestland presents Joseph Stalin as a romantic, Lenin as a moderniser. Mao Zedong was a romantic, Deng Xiaoping a moderniser. But he also believes that Nikita Khrushchev, Stalin’s shrewd successor, was a romantic – and so was the man who finally pulled down the pillars in the communist temple, Mikhail Gorbachev. If Gorbachev had not been “a typical romantic Marxist”, he would never have believed that communism could survive perestroika, he says – and therefore he would never have embarked on the revolution that destroyed it.

It is hard to stomach that men such as Stalin, who launched the Great Terror, and Mao, who deliberately started a civil war with his Cultural Revolution, each responsible for the deaths of millions of their fellow countrymen, can be called “romantics”. But Priestland means it in the sense of being so idealistic and revolutionary that they were capable of horrendous violence and cruelty in pursuit of their ends.


He admits that Stalin was both ruthless and deeply suspicious. But he does not go so far as late Polish historian Leszek Kolakowski in concluding that events such as the Great Terror were not aberrations of communism but, rather, the inevitable consequence of a system that sanctioned the dictatorship of an elite.

'Shark' Tim Ceis keeps grip on power of mayor's office

Born Timothy Yorke Ceis in September 1955, Ceis was steeped in the good and bad of politics from an early age as part of a prominent West Seattle family.

His mother, Margaret Ceis, has been a crusader for a variety of civil-rights and liberal political causes.

His father, Philip Ceis, was a construction contractor dragged into the Red Scare for his political beliefs. In 1954, when the House Un-American Activities Committee held hearings in Seattle, Philip Ceis was subpoenaed and grilled on his membership in the Communist Party a decade earlier.

Unlike some witnesses, Philip Ceis was unapologetic for his political affiliations and declined to name other ex-Communists, angering congressional leaders on the panel.

The publicity haunted the Ceis family for years. Potential construction clients shunned them, saying the FBI had been around asking questions, Margaret Ceis recalled. As a boy, Tim Ceis wasn't invited to play at the homes of some disapproving neighbors.

Ceis graduated from West Seattle High School in 1973 and attended the University of Washington, but school didn't hold his interest. He dropped out and worked for his father's construction company, eventually taking it over. He still lives in West Seattle, just blocks from his mother. (Philip Ceis died in 1996.)

In 1999, he married Karen Reed, former assistant city manager for Bellevue. Nickels was Ceis' best man. (Reed, whose family is fond of nicknames, gave Ceis his "Shark" moniker.) The marriage was the third for Ceis. He has one daughter from his second marriage, which ended in divorce in 1994.

Playing hardball

Ceis, 46, is not particularly ideological. He got into politics because he's good at it — though like most Seattle politicians he counts himself a liberal Democrat.

He believes in a strong mayor's office, demanding total accountability from city departments. That's only fair, Ceis says, since the mayor will be ultimately accountable for how city employees perform.

BESLAN, RUSSIA - Heavily armed insurgents, some with explosives strapped to their bodies, seized a school here in southern Russia on Wednesday, herded scores of schoolchildren, parents and teachers into its gymnasium and threatened to kill them.

More than a dozen guerrillas, including men and women, stormed Middle School No. 1 in this town in North Ossetia, not far from Chechnya on Russia's southern border with Georgia, as children lined up outside the building just moments after the opening of the school year.

Casualty reports varied widely. At least two people were confirmed killed, including a school parent, but an official in the command operation told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity early today that 16 people were killed - 12 inside the school, two who died in a hospital and two others whose bodies still lay outside and could not be removed because of gunfire. The official said 13 were wounded.

The local police, as well as special forces and soldiers from Russia's 58th Army, surrounded the school, creating a nervous standoff that continued into today in stormy weather that flooded streets.

Officials at the scene would not discuss who they thought the insurgents were, but a man who answered the phone at the school and identified himself as a spokesman for the attackers said they were Chechens.

Beslan school hostage crisis

The Beslan school hostage crisis (also referred to as the Beslan school siege or Beslan massacre) was a three day hostage-taking of over 1000 people which ended in the deaths of over 300. It began when a group of armed mostly Ingush and Chechen terrorists took more than 1,100 people (including 777 children) hostage on September 1, 2004, at School Number One (SNO) in the town of Beslan, North Ossetia, an autonomous republic in the North Caucasus region of the Russian Federation. The hostage taking was carried out by a group sent by the Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, which issued demands of an end to the Second Chechen War. On the third day of the standoff, Russian security forces stormed the building, using tanks, thermobaric rockets, and other heavy weapons. A series of explosions shook the school, followed by a fire which engulfed the building and a chaotic gunbattle between the hostage-takers and Russian security forces. Ultimately, at least 334
hostages were killed, including 186 children; hundreds more were injured and many were reported missing.

The tragedy led to security and political repercussions in Russia, most notably a series of government reforms consolidating power in the Kremlin and strengthening of the powers of the President of Russia.

Soviet submarine K-19

K-19, KS-19, BS-19 was one of the first two Soviet submarines of the 658, 658, 658 class (NATO reporting name Hotel-class submarine), the first generation nuclear submarine equipped with nuclear ballistic missiles. Her keel was laid down on 17 October 1958, christened on 8 April 1959 and launched on 11 October 1959. Her naval flag was first raised on 12 July 1960, and she completed all acceptance tests on 12 November 1960. Her official commissioning took place on 30 April 1961. Due to the large number of accidents during her construction and service life, she gained an unofficial nickname "Hiroshima" among naval sailors and officers.


Fire

On 24 February 1972, a fire broke out on board K-19 while the submarine was at a depth of 120 metres (380 ft), some 1300 km (800 miles) from Newfoundland, in Canada. A total of 28 sailors died in the fire, caused by hydraulic fluid leaking onto a hot filter. The boat surfaced, and surface warships evacuated the crew, except for 12 men trapped in the aft torpedo room. Towing was delayed by a gale, and the aft torpedo room could not be reached because of conditions in the engine room. After the gale abated, the boat was towed to Severomorsk on 4 April, and the men were rescued after surviving 24 days in the lightless, heatless torpedo room. The rescue operation lasted more than 40 days and involved over 30 ships. K-19 was again repaired and returned to the fleet.

Rescue teams abandoned efforts Monday to find survivors in a sunken Russian submarine after determining that all 118 crew members had perished in the flooded vessel.

Norwegian and Russian officials in charge of rescue efforts concluded the Kursk was completely flooded after it suffered a massive explosion and sank Aug. 12 during naval exercises in the Barents Sea.

The Russian navy said a video camera would be lowered into the hull of the Kursk to determine conditions inside. But the rescue effort was now shifting to raising the submarine, an enormous task that could take weeks or even months.

The mayor invited news photographers to see damaged revealed by a test pit dug on Tuesday. Engineers found destruction to structural timbers from Gribbles, underwater crustaceans with 7pairs of legs and 4 pairs of mouthparts, has caused extensive damage to ships, docks, and in this instance, the relieving platform against the seawall and underneath Alaskan Way. The damage found in several places means that the seawall’s vulnerability to an earthquake, already a concern, is even greater than people realized.

Seattle Municipal Court hosts Homeless Veteran’s Court forum

The Seattle Municipal Court, Columbia Legal Services, Seattle City Attorney, and the Associated Counsel for the Accused will host a Homeless Veteran’s Court forum on Monday, June 27 at Seattle Municipal Court. The forum is an opportunity to bring together experts from San Diego County, the site of the first Homeless Court, and local providers to learn the most effective way to operate a similar court in King County.

Seattle Municipal Court sees many homeless defendants who commit low level quality of life crimes such as theft, criminal trespass, and drinking in public. Homeless individuals may fail to comply with the court process since they have no address to receive a criminal summons, resulting in issuance of a warrant. This minor offense could be more effectively addressed through a Homeless Court process, whereby the court, legal system and social service systems collaborate to help resolve misdemeanors for defendants already on the road to self-sufficiency. Service providers identify candidates and the prosecutor and public defender work out a plea agreement. In most cases, part of the sentence includes credit for progress the individual has already made. This may include participation in drug or alcohol treatment, completion of an anger management class, or completion of community service.
