Olympus, he'd call it, Brightling decided on the spot. The home of the gods, for that was exactly what he expected it to be. From here they could watch the world, study it, enjoy it, appreciate it. He would use the call-sign OLYMPUS-1 on his portable radio. From here he'd be able to fly all over the world with picked companions, to observe and learn how the ecology was supposed to work. For twenty years or so, they'd be able to use communications satellites no telling how long they'd last, and after that they'd be stuck with long-wire radio systems. That was an inconvenience for the future, but launching his own replacement satellites was just too difficult in terms of manpower and resources, and besides, satellite launchers polluted like nothing else humankind had ever invented.
Brightling wondered how long his people would choose to live here. Some would scatter quickly, probably drive all over America, setting up their own enclaves, reporting back by satellite at first. Others would go to Africa-that seemed likely to be the most popular destination. Still others to Brazil and the rain forest study area. Perhaps some of the primitive tribes down there would be spared the Shiva exposure, and his people would study them as well and how Primitive Man lived in a pristine physical environment, living in full harmony with Nature. They'd study them as they were, a unique species worthy of protection and too backward to be a danger to the environment. Might some African tribes survive as well? His people didn't think so. The African countries allowed their primitives to interface too readily with city folk, and the cities would be the focal centers of death for every nation on earth-especially when Vaccine-A was distributed. Thousands of liters of it would be produced, flown all over the world, and then distributed, ostensibly to preserve life, but really to take it… slowly, of course.
Progress was going well. Back at his corporate headquarters the fictional documentation for -A was already fully formulated. It had been supposedly tested on over a thousand monkeys who were then exposed to Shiva, and only two of them had become symptomatic, and only one of those had died over the nineteen month trial that existed only on paper and computer memories. They hadn't yet approached the FDA for human trials, because that wasn't necessary-but when Shiva started appearing all over the world, Horizon Corporation would announce that it had been working quietly on hemorrhagic fever vaccines ever since the Iranian attack on America, and faced with a global emergency and a fully documented treatment modality, the FDA would have no choice but to approve human use, and so officially bless the Project's goal of global human extermination. Not so much the elimination, John Brightling thought more precisely, as the culling back of the most dangerous species on the planet, which would allow Nature to restore Herself, with just enough human stewards to watch and study and appreciate the process. In a thousand or so years, there might be a million or so humans, but that was a small number in the great scheme of things, and the people would be properly educated to understand and respect nature instead of destroying her. The goal of the Project wasn't to end the world. It was to build a new one, a new world in the shape that Nature Herself intended. On that he would put his own name for all eternity. John Brightling, the man who saved the planet.
Brightling looked at the key in his hand, then got back into his car. The driver took him to the main entrance, and there he used the key, surprised and miffed to see that the door was unlocked. Well, there were still people going in and out. He took the elevator to his office-apartment atop the main building. That door, he saw, was locked as it was supposed to be, and he opened it with a kind of one-person ceremony, and walked into the seat of Olympus's chief,o d. No, that wasn't right. Insofar as there was a god, it was Nature. From his office windows, he could see out over the plains of Kansas, the swaying young wheat… it was so beautiful. Almost enough to bring tears to his eyes. Nature. She could be cruel to individuals, but individuals didn't matter. Despite all the warnings, humankind hadn't learned that.
Well, learn it they would, the way Nature taught all Her lessons. The hard way.

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.
The Ministry was based in the Ordenspalais in Berlin-Mitte on the Wilhelmplatz across from the Reich Chancellery.
Role in the Nazi state
When the Nazis took power the Propaganda Ministry was established almost immediately. It was charged with enforcing Nazi doctrine on the people and controlling public opinion. However, the Ministry became even more important after the outbreak of war.
World War II was conducted with a much greater level of propaganda than World War I, especially in the new media of film and radio. Because of practical experience and scientific occupation with propaganda in Europe and USA, propaganda was organised in a planned fashion. A new psychological warfare was born.
Organization
The Ministry grew steadily. It began in 1933 with five departments and 350 employees. By 1939, there were 2000 employees in 17 departments. Between 1933 and 1941, the Ministry's budget grew from 14 million to 187 million Reichsmarks. Three state secretaries were subordinate to Joseph Goebbels
Propaganda

The Propaganda Ministry used many media to further the National Socialist message and maintain control over the people. Posters, newspapers, publishing, and the arts were all used and explicitly controlled by the Ministry.
Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."
Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government. However, you cannot lie! We must never lie!

A man finds himself alone walking towards a diner. Inside he finds a jukebox playing loudly, and coffee hot on the stove, but no one else. He inquires for some breakfast, but no chef or waitress is to be found. He is dressed in an Air Force flight suit, but he does not remember who he is or how he got there.

In 1998, the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II was the only fixed-wing vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft in the free world. Its ability to take off vertically makes it one of the most maneuverable combat aircraft in service, and it can zoom out of the range of enemy fire extremely quickly.
Based on the 1957 British-designed Hawker-Siddley "Kestrel," the AV-8B Harrier II was developed by a team representing McDonnell Douglas, British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce. Production of the St. Louis, Mo.-built AV-8B began in 1981, and more than 340 Harrier IIs were produced. They carried more fuel than the AV-8As and had higher lift and better cruise characteristics.
In 1991, Harrier IIs were the first U.S. Marine Corps tactical aircraft to arrive for Operation Desert Storm over the Persian Gulf. During the 42 days of combat, 86 Harrier IIs flew 3,380 combat sorties

"I've never worked a case like this before."
"I have," the ASAC said. "The Green River killer in Seattle. We put a ton of resources on that one, but we never caught the mutt, and the killings just stopped. Maybe he got picked up for burglary or robbing a liquor store, and maybe he's sitting it out in a Washington State prison, waiting to get paroled so he can take down some more hookers. We have a great profile on how his brain works, but that's it, and we don't know what brain the profile fits. These cases are real head-scratchers."

Former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels was there, so were former Gov. Dan Evans and Sen. Maria Cantwell. But among the many dignitaries at the opening of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters, there was some buzz about who wasn't there: Mayor Mike McGinn.
Had the establishment stiffed the mayor? Had the mayor stiffed the establishment?
Turns out McGinn was attending the 19th Annual Human Services Awards at City Hall where he presented the Mayor's Award to Child Care Resources advocate Adrienne Wingo. True, the awards ceremony broke up around 7 p.m., about the time the program at the Gates' Foundation was beginning, and some council members, including Jean Godden, managed to attend both.

Gates Foundation moves into new headquarters
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is inviting the community to help it celebrate its new headquarters this week, as it moves from five scattered nondescript office buildings around Seattle to an architectural showcase in the center of its hometown.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is inviting the community to help it celebrate its new headquarters this week, as it moves from five scattered nondescript office buildings around Seattle to an architectural showcase in the center of its hometown.
The move and the buildings are both symbolic of the ways this family foundation has grown in little more than a decade. The organization has gone from a small charity interested in bringing the Internet to public libraries to the world's largest charitable foundation trying to end AIDS and polio.
Most of the foundation's old buildings didn't even have a sign out front. Now, the staff of nearly 1,000 come to work each day in one of the city's most visited neighborhoods, Seattle Center, home of the iconic Space Needle.

It may be better known for its work around the world, but the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation highlighted local programs in celebrating the opening of its new Seattle headquarters Thursday.

It may be better known for its work around the world, but the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation highlighted local programs in celebrating the opening of its new Seattle headquarters Thursday.
"We have arms reaching out to every part of the world, but we have local roots here," said Martha Choe, a former City Council member who is the foundation's chief administrative officer.
The opening marked the culmination of a seven-year process to build the 900,000-square-foot campus on a 12-acre site across from the Seattle Center at a cost of $500 million.
The Gates Foundation hosted a reception for 1,000 community leaders Thursday evening and will hold a public open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The land was formerly a site belonging to the Duwamish Tribe, and tribe chair Cecile Hansen led an invocation to begin Thursday's reception.
"I think it's as important as when the Space Needle went up," said Sen. Maria Cantwell, who was in the audience. "Seattle is continuing to make so much of an imprint on global issues."
The Gates Foundation expects to bring partners here from around the world for hundreds of meetings a year on the campus, including upcoming forums on homelessness, U.S. education and malaria.
More than 900 employees and 300 contractors now work in Seattle, with room for 300 more in the current two buildings as the organization grows.
Their work in Washington state is focused largely on families and children.
David Bley, director of the Pacific Northwest initiative, said that since 2006, the foundation has invested about $100 million in an effort to reduce family homelessness by half in the Seattle metropolitan area.
Bley looks out the window of his office and sees Seattle's homeless right across the street. "I take it personally," he said.
Increasingly, Bley said, he is also finding ways to bridge global and local projects and share lessons.
One example is a global health ambassadors program to educate local students about health issues around the world.
Bley also noted that the home of the Gates Foundation happens to be a place where "a large number of parents still choose not to vaccinate children."
The foundation, which invests heavily in new vaccines and works to boost vaccination rates around the world, will soon be partnering with local groups to do the same in Washington, he said.
The program, a collaboration with Group Health and local health officials, will focus on educating doctors. .The hope is that doctors will in turn be able to better explain the benefits of childhood vaccination to parents and help allay fears, he said.
Asked to describe how the foundation employees approach their work, which includes such disparate goals as trying to eliminate polio and making sure every U.S. student is prepared for college, Bley pointed to some common elements.
"Here in Seattle we're not fighting polio and we have clean water," he said. But the questions are similar. "How do you raise community awareness and build community will to take on problems that other people have chosen to neglect or have been defeated by?"
In Ethiopia or India or China, "it might be a health problem as opposed to an education problem, but you're still working with partners in the community," he said.
One effect of the newly opened offices could be increased traffic along Fifth Avenue North, where a Seattle Center parking garage doubles as employee parking.
To reduce the number of cars and the impact of the campus, foundation employees get free Orca cards for unlimited use on buses, trains, light rail, and the Seattle Street Car. They also have a strong financial incentive: All employees pay $9 a day to park in the garage, but they receive $3 a day when they take alternative transportation, such as a bus, bike or van pool.
The Seattle Center Monorail now opens earlier to help employees get to the area from the Westlake Transit Tunnel during the morning commute.
They are also encouraged to work outdoors and circulate around the light-filled office space.
Artwork from around the world adorns the buildings, much of it donated to the foundation by grantees. An African shirt that Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid activist and former president of South Africa, gave to Bill and Melinda Gates in 1999 hangs on the top floor.
A striking tapestry by Ghanaian artist El Anatsui drapes one wall near the grand atrium, which serves both as a casual bistro and the site of receptions.
The tapestry's "fabric" is made of metal tops from liquor bottles, hammered flat and woven together.
Anatsui works mainly in Nigeria, said Choe, the foundation's chief administrative officer. Village children helped hammer the bottle caps, and the artist repaid their labor by sending them to school, she said.

"Jane Does?" the other federal officer asked.
"Nothing that matches. Guys, we have to face the possibility that we have a serial killer loose in the area-"
"But why did this e-mail message come out?"
"How does it match with other e-mails Miss Bannister sent to her dad?" the NYPD detective asked.
"Not very well," the senior FBI agent admitted. "The one he initially brought into the Gary office looks as though-well, it smells to me like drugs, y'know?"
"Agreed," d'Allessandro said. "You have others?"
"Here." The agent handed over six printouts faxed to the New York office. The detective scanned them. They were all perfectly grammatical, and organized, with no misspelling on any of them.
"What if she didn't send it? What if somebody else did?"
"The serial killer?" the junior FBI agent asked. Then he thought about it, and his face mirrored what he thought. "He'd have to be a real sick one, Mario."
"Yeah, well, serial killers aren't Eagle Scouts, are they?"
"Tormenting the families? Have we ever had one like that?" the senior man wondered.
"Not that I know of, Tom, but, like the man said…"
"Shit," observed the senior agent, Tom Sullivan.
"Call Behavioral Sciences in on this one?" the junior agent, Frank Chatham, asked.
Sullivan nodded. "Yeah, let's do that. I'll call Pat O'Connor about it. Next step here, I think we get some flyers printed up with the photo of Mary Bannister and start passing them out on the West Side. Mario, can you get us some cooperation from your people?"
"No problem," d'Allessandro replied. "If this is what it looks like, I want the fuck before he starts going for some sort of record. Not in my town, guys," the detective concluded.
"Going to try the Interleukin again?" Barbara Archer asked.
"Yeah." Killgore nodded. "-3a is supposed to enhance the immune system, but they're not sure how. I'm not either, but if it has any effect, we need to know about it."
"What about lung complications?" One of the problems with Interleukin was that it attacked lung tissue, also for unknown reasons, and could be dangerous to smokers and others with respiratory problems.
Another nod. "Yeah, I know, just like -2, but F4 isn't a smoker, and I want to make sure that -3a doesn't do anything to compromise Shiva. We can't take that chance. Barb."
"Agreed," Dr. Archer observed. Like Killgore, she didn't think that this new version of Interleukin was the least bit helpful, but that had to be confirmed. "What about Interferon?"
"The French have been trying that on hemorrhagic fever for the last five years, but no results at all. We can hang that, too, but it's going to be a dry hole, Barb."
"Let's try it on F4 anyway," she suggested.
"Fair enough." Killgore made a notation on the chart and left the room. A minute later he appeared on the TV monitor.
"Hi, Mary, how are we feeling this morning? Any better?"
"No." She shook her head. "Stomach still hurts pretty bad."
"Oh, really? Let's see what we can do about that." This case was proceeding rapidly. Killgore wondered if she had a genetic abnormality in her upper GI maybe some vulnerability to peptic ulcer disease?… If so, then the Shiva was going to rip her apart in a hurry. He increased the morphine dosage rate on the machine next to her bed. "-Okay, now we're going to give you a couple of new medications. These ought to fix you up in two or three days, Okay?"
"Are these the ones I signed up for?" F4 asked weakly.
"Yes, that's right," Killgore replied, hanging the Interleukon and Interleukin-3a on the medication tree. "These ought to make you feel a lot better," he promised with a smile. It was so odd, talking to his lab rats. Well, as he'd told himself many times, a rat was a pig was a dog was a… girl, in this case. There wasn't really all that much of difference, was there? No, he told himself this afternoon. Her body relaxed with the increased morphine dose, and her eyes became unfocused. Well, that was one difference. wasn't it? They didn't give rats sedatives or narcotics to ease their pain. It wasn't that they didn't want to, just that there was no practical way to ease their discomfort. It had never pleased him to see those cute pink eyes change from bright to dull, reflecting the pain. Well, in this case, at least, the dullness mirrored a respite from the pain.

Gates Foundation's new campus a center for local as well as world issues
David Bley, director of the Pacific Northwest initiative, said that since 2006, the foundation has invested about $100 million in an effort to reduce family homelessness by half in the Seattle metropolitan area.
Bley looks out the window of his office and sees Seattle's homeless right across the street. "I take it personally," he said.
Increasingly, Bley said, he is also finding ways to bridge global and local projects and share lessons.

Round six of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship takes place around the streets of Monte Carlo. It’s the shortest, yet most demanding track on the calendar, and the drivers love the challenge of F1’s original street race.
The Monaco Grand Prix was on the inaugural F1 calendar back in 1950 and it’s been a regular fixture since ’55. The layout of the 3.3km circuit has remained largely unchanged, the biggest updates taking place in 2004, when a new pit complex was built.
The track has the slowest average speed of any circuit in F1, but the proximity of the barriers and the lack of run-off make it mentally absorbing for the drivers. Most of the corners are blind and the track surface is often slippery, particularly at the beginning of the race weekend.
McLaren has an enviable record at Monaco, having won the race more than any other constructor. Here’s how the team defined 15 days in the history of the Monaco Grand Prix.

The term ballistic trauma refers to a form of physical trauma sustained from the discharge of arms or munitions. The most common forms of ballistic trauma stem from firearms used in armed conflicts, civilian sporting and recreational pursuits, and criminal activity.
The degree of tissue disruption caused by a projectile is related to the size of the temporary versus permanent cavity it creates as it passes through tissue.
Non-fatal gunshot wounds frequently have severe and long-lasting effects, even after the victim has made a successful recovery. Typically, the consequences involve some form of major disfigurement and/or permanent disability.

Spooky.
At the risk of giving away too many personally identifying details, I cannot help but make this following observation. During the 10 AM hour this morning here in Pacific time in Washington State, I was at the grocery store. I had the thought to pick up a bag of Lifesavers candy. I rarely if ever purchase candy but I was thinking about it as I walked to the grocery store and I had thought before, as I was then, about that scene from the 2002 film "Windtalkers." I had no specific reason for purchasing that item in relation to that film "Windtalkers" but I did think about it a great deal among the thousands of details that circulate around in my conscious mind during the day. I would not even note that detail about that Lifesavers candy here in my web log except for one other detail. Somehow, the total bill for the groceries I took to the self-checkout line totaled *precisely* $33.59. That was after tax. I thought about that, especially in the context of observations I have made lately in my web log in the internet, as I left the store and walked back to my apartment and I wondered, as I always wonder about the suspicious behavior of people in that grocery store, if someone in the back office had automatically adjusted the prices on my items so that such a total would be reached. Perhaps. But that becomes less likely the more I think about it. I wasn't consciously calculating a running total of the items I was selecting as I already had decided in my mind before I went in there as to what I would buy. Looking at the receipt, the prices are consistent with what I remember from the shelves where I got the items. I wondered why did that happen today. That happened today and that first time in years and decades since I bought Lifesavers candy.
Of course, according to my time traveler communication theory then that had to happen. I write about it here now in my journal and then it has to happen. Okay, so since everything I record in my journal has to happen then just ten minutes after I post this note, I will get an email telling me where that house is that still belongs to me, which is in this local area, and that I can go there at that very moment if I want to. Since I am now writing this in my journal then that has to happen because that is what I strongly want to happen. A universe time paradox of galactic scale will happen if I do not get that email ten minutes later.

Consistent with that theory I wrote earlier today about Mogge is a detail I just noticed on the map. I ran into Mogge after I got out of the Navy because he and his wife Andrea had moved into the Clemson, SC, area. I was working in a First Federal bank branch in Seneca, SC, to repair a computer on the drive-through teller line. I can’t remember that girl’s name that I was repairing the computer for but I remember her last name was Edgar. We went out a few times right before I started dating Tracie Rhodes. So anyway, I was standing there at the drive-through window and I saw Mark and Andrea in their pickup outside looking in at me. I went out there to talk them after they pulled into the parking lot. I remember I was driving my Plymouth Voyager car. I think Mogge had a small red pickup. Since I was driving that Voyager, that means it was after I had returned from Memphis and I must have been living in nearby Central, SC, at the time.

Highway 59 runs into Seneca, South Carolina, also. In what appears to be downtown Seneca, it is named Oak Street and it intersects with a road that is labeled Business 76 & Business 123. The Seneca branch of First Federal that I have written about several times is nearby on a major highway labeled Bypass 76 & Bypass 123. I wrote about running into Mark and Andrea Mogge again the first time after I had been out of the Navy for a while. I also wrote about a girl named Lee Edgar who worked at the Seneca branch. It was her terminal at the drive-through window that I was working on when I saw Mark and Andrea sitting in their small red pickup outside in the drive-through. We were talking in the parking lot outside next to Highway 76/123 and I “remember” at one point answering a call on my large cellular phone, the kind you carried in a bag, that was in my burgundy Plymouth Voyager car.

So anyway, the notion that got me started on this note periodically while watching television for a short while was when I decided to review that apartment place I remember living at in Memphis Tennessee. I was only there for about six weeks as I best recall. I was just thinking about it the other day.
I was thinking the other day about sitting there in that apartment and playing "Leisure Suit Larry" on my personal computer. I remember that my apartment looked out over the golf course. The apartment was smaller than the duplex house I had been living in back in Greenville South Carolina but it had a really neat sunroom I liked. I remember I lived there when I traded in that red 1990 Mazda RX-7 for a brand new 1992 Plymouth Laser car. I referred to that Plymouth many times before as the Plymouth Voyager but that was incorrect. I had the Plymouth Laser car. The car was dark burgundy color.

I found myself wondering today when it was that the Stark was hit by the Iraqis. I want to say it was 1986 but I started thinking later that it was 1987. I still remember standing in the barracks when I was in Orlando and seeing the news report. But that was 1986. In 1987, I would have been in Dam Neck. I was watching the tv with one of my roommates
previously of the USS Kitty Hawk I think, so that would have definitely been Orlando . Can’t look it up because the internet has been down all day. I suspect terrorists are trying to block my internet access.
I started wondering about the Stark because I wonder if I was there and I took some kind of action in response. I am hoping that, if indeed I did something, I took the initiative to select a legitimate military target and took action. Something similar to: “Hello, Baghdad Bob? Yeah, I’m flying in a message from the Stark, federal express. I hope you’re there to take delivery, but if not, that’s up to you.”
Later I started thinking that maybe I just bombed their lawn, to send them a message to not make any more “mistakes” around our ships.

Former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels was there, so were former Gov. Dan Evans and Sen. Maria Cantwell. But among the many dignitaries at the opening of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters, there was some buzz about who wasn't there: Mayor Mike McGinn.
Had the establishment stiffed the mayor? Had the mayor stiffed the establishment?
Turns out McGinn was attending the 19th Annual Human Services Awards at City Hall where he presented the Mayor's Award to Child Care Resources advocate Adrienne Wingo. True, the awards ceremony broke up around 7 p.m., about the time the program at the Gates' Foundation was beginning, and some council members, including Jean Godden, managed to attend both.
