Darien Fawkes is a con-man and thief who is captured for a third time. Rather then face California's three-strike law, he volunteers for an experiment conducted by his brother Kevin. Kevin and another scientist, Arnaud, have created a synthetic gland that secrets "Quicksilver", a substance that can bend light. They place the gland in Darien's head. He soon realizes what has happened and is none too pleased. Darien is even less happy when they discover the gland secretes Quicksilver into the recipient's brain, and enough of it drives the person insane. Darien learns to control his abilities, and soon discovers that Arnaud is up to something. Arnaud claims Darien is insane when he accuses the scientists, but then Arnaud's mercenaries break in, steal the information on the gland, and kill everyone except Darien. Darien goes to his ex-girlfriend, a doctor who is furious at him because he didn't reveal his past. She refuses to believe he can turn invisible, and then Darien is taken away by men in trenchcoats. He meets two men, the "Official" and a bureaucrat named Eberts, who tell him that Arnaud is a terrorist who is trying to duplicate the gland, and he'll have to go to Mexico and Arnaud's base of operations to try and find the duplicate gland and the method from which his gland can be removed.

Facing life without parole for a crime he ultimately didn't commit, crook Darien Fawkes is offered a pardon if he'll agree to participate in his brother's medical experiment: the insertion into his brain of a synthetic gland which secretes a light-bending substance called Quicksilver, which renders whoever or whatever is cloaked in it invisible. But Quicksilver also breaks down Darien's sanity without the regular injection of a counter-agent, and when terrorists gun down everyone involved in the project and steal all the relevant information, Darien is recruited by the experiment's backers, an ultra-secret and under-funded intelligence agency subsidized by the Department of Fish and Game, to stop the terrorists, avenge his brother's death, and get a fresh hit of the counter-agent.

Going to Mexico to investigate Arnaud, Darien meets his new partner Bobby Hobbes: a veteran spy and near basket-case. They escape an ambush by French-Canadian spies. Meanwhile, Arnaud has had Darien's girlfriend Casey brought down to Mexico, planning on using her as a hostage. Darien goes to rescue her, prepared to kill Arnaud since Darien thinks he'll be going insane shortly. Arnaud plays his trump card: there's a counter-agent that will stave off Quicksilver madness, and he'll give it to Darien if he works for him. Darien refuses, escaping with Casey and blowing up the compound (although Arnaud escapes). Both the counteragent and the formula are destroyed, and Darien goes to visit his brother's grave one more time before going permanently insane. However, the Official meets him there and reveals that his Agency was working with Kevin, and they have the counter-agent as well. As long as Darien works for them, he'll get regular doses of the Counter-Agent. Reluctantly, Darien agrees

The gadget looked like a ray-gun pistol from a '30s science fiction movie, with a slim antenna wire out the front and a pistol grip underneath. It swung on a frictionless bearing, drawn to the signal it received. Noonan moved away from Chavez and Covington, and headed for the wall. There was a secretary sitting right… there. The gadget locked on her. As he walked, it stayed pointed at her, through the blank wall.
"It's like a bloody divining rod," Peter observed, no small amount of wonder in his voice. "Like finding water…"

"I have," the ASAC said. "The Green River killer in Seattle. We put a ton of resources on that one, but we never caught the mutt, and the killings just stopped. Maybe he got picked up for burglary or robbing a liquor store, and maybe he's sitting it out in a Washington State prison, waiting to get paroled so he can take down some more hookers. We have a great profile on how his brain works, but that's it, and we don't know what brain the profile fits. These cases are real head-scratchers."

I took note of that announcement from South Carolina because Microsoft Corporation had just transported me from Rock Hill, South Carolina, for that 12/7/1998 start date for my job. Absolutely every aspect of that employment in the Microsoft Bellevue office was arranged by Microsoft. A Microsoft employee contacted me to ask if I wanted to go to work at Microsoft and then Microsoft arranged the interview process. A few years later, as I was still working there at Microsoft Corporation with my official United States federal undercover identity and Microsoft re-issued those security badges. I remember that well because they had a guy named Clarence, who was from Hawaii, sitting directly across the aisle from me in another cubicle and he was one of the people I heard spreading rumors that I was a U.S. Navy SEAL, which I denied. I remember when got that new Microsoft security badge, it had the same photo that was taken of me on 12/7/1998, but it was re-issued with a red smudge on my forehead.
Back in 1998, Microsoft offered me employment and then made all the arrangements to transport my household possessions, associated with my official United States federal identity, to Bellevue, Washington. Among those official United States identity possessions was a rather beat up burgundy Buick car. The transportation company made detailed notes on the dents and dings in the car, as it had seen better days. A few weeks after started working at Microsoft, I took that Buick over to the Washington State Patrol and a person there seemed concerned because I didn't have any form of license plates on that car.
I was still living directly across the street from the Bellevue Police Department at the time I went to license that burgundy Buick. I remember that Microsoft made arrangements for me to stay in a corporate apartment for the first 30 days and after the end of those 30 days, I found my own place, which was directly across the street from the Bellevue City Police Department.

After I left Redmond Washington in February 2004 and moved to Spokane Valley, look at your maps if you want to know how to get there, I was living at a long-term hotel where I planned to stay until I found other employment and then I was going to rent an apartment. Just about every day I saw a chief petty officer in a khaki United States Navy uniform pass by my window. I guess they had him in the unit next door to mine. I saw him often enough that I identified the chief petty officer insignia on the shirt collar of his uniform.
They certainly went to great lengths to discredit me. I mean, am I not discredited even to this very day?
But hey, let's give the Devil some credit where credit is due. I was never a chief petty officer of the United States Navy.
Between 1990 and 1993 contiguously I was a chief warrant officer of the United States Marine Corps.
