The Nixon Wit

The Wit and Humor of Richard Nixon, by Bill Adler Popular Library, 60 cents

By FRANK RICH, March 17, 1969

IN CASE you haven't figured it out by now, President Nixon is about as much fun as diarrhea.

And should you need any proof of this man's cosmic dullness, just browse through The Wit and Humor of Richard Nixon, a serious attempt by Bill Adler to reveal "the Nixon noboby knows. . . a humorist in the genuine American grain (who) has displayed a delightful sense of humor, a sharp wit, and a unique ability to bring laughter." For all is good intentions, this book reveals the man in the White House to be just what we knew he was all long--the worst item to hit the American cultural scene since plastic.

Not that Adler hasn't tried to correct this impression. He actually read through all the speeches and writings of Nixon's career to put together this incredible collection of boring anecdotes, ho-hum gags, and two-bits philosophy (typical piece of Nixon wisdom: "A man must be judged by the decisions he made or didn't make, not by how he dots an 'i' or crosses a 't'."

And oh, those gags! The political jokes ("I greatly appreciate music. You know that's one place I'm like Harry Truman--I used to play the Piano myself.") the bilingual wisecracks ("We have to quit thinking of Latin America in terms of siestas, manana, Rumba, Samba, and Cha-Cha-Cha." Cha-Cha-Cha!), the self-deprecating quips

Senator pleaded guilty, reportedly after bathroom stall incident

(CNN) -- A Republican senator pleaded guilty earlier this month to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge stemming from his arrest at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, according to state criminal records.

Roll Call newspaper reported Monday that Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho was apprehended June 11 by a plainclothes police officer investigating complaints of lewd behavior in an airport men's room.

Roll Call reports on the U.S. legislature.

Craig denied any inappropriate conduct in a prepared statement, and said he now regrets his guilty plea.

"At the time of this incident, I complained to the police that they were misconstruing my actions. I was not involved in any inappropriate conduct," he said. "I should have had the advice of counsel in resolving this matter. In hindsight, I should not have pled guilty. I was trying to handle this matter myself quickly and expeditiously."

Congress is currently in recess, and Craig's office said he was on vacation in Idaho with his family, with no public appearances scheduled.

Craig, 62, paid a $500 fine when he entered his guilty plea on August 8 in Hennepin County Municipal Court in Bloomington, Minnesota, according to state criminal records.

CNN confirmed that Craig was sentenced to 10 days in jail but that sentence was stayed.

Minnesota law defines disorderly conduct as brawling, disturbing a meeting or engaging in "offensive, obscene, abusive, boisterous or noisy conduct."

According to Roll Call, the arresting officer alleged that Craig lingered outside a rest room stall where the officer was sitting, then entered the stall next door and blocked the door with his luggage.

According to the arrest report cited by Roll Call, Craig tapped his right foot, which the officer said he recognized "as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct."

The report alleges Craig then touched the officer's foot with his foot and the senator "proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times

People's Pope: Francis Comes to America; Awaiting Papal Address to Congress. Aired 9-9:30a ET

Aired September 24, 2015 - 09:00 ET

The pope will address that kind of thing. We understand that the pope will say that he's not come to the United States capitol to lecture American lawmakers. He has come to talk to share and there you see Speaker Boehner.

BLITZER: The speaker is waiting for the pope.

KESICKI: Often for Catholics, it is appropriate to kiss the pope's ring. We know this pope though, he sort of favors an embrace. He likes to make eye contact with the person he's greeting. There are various ways in which people embrace the pope. This is a familiar pope, a pastor. So, I think he's going toe want to look into the eyes of the speaker and welcome him.

BLITZER: Jake Tapper, the speaker of the House clearly excited about this moment. Understandably so.

TAPPER: He's not the first Catholic to serve as U.S. speaker of the House. That was just John McCormick in 1962. But he is certainly a very visible and observant Catholic.

And John King, we at the table here were just talking about the fact that he looks literally as nervous as the choir boy, waiting to meet the pope, his religious leader.

The Senate Acquits President Clinton

The United States Senate acquitted William Jefferson Clinton yesterday on charges that he committed perjury and obstruction of justice to hide sexual indiscretions with a onetime White House intern, permitting the 42nd president to complete the remaining 708 days of his term.

"The president," added Rep. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), "has been cleansed."

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) also indicated a desire to move on, issuing a statement highlighting the party's renewed focus on legislation even as he said Republicans "can be proud that they stood by the principles that have made this nation strong: a respect for the rule of law and an abiding faith in the strength of our Constitution."

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: August 22, 2006

As I was riding the bus to the VA, I remembered something else that happened at Microsoft. I was complaining to a friend one day about how Sharon Bjeletich had put a curtain up at the entrance to her cube so no one could see in. That was the second cube I sat in after moving to that new floor in the Bellevue office. Sharon sat two cubicles from me. Eddy Hahn was in the cube between us. I believe that Sharon put that curtain up because she, and everyone else, knew that there were cameras outside the building staring in at me and she was being captured in the frame. I am certain that happened in 2000 because I remember something from Halloween when I was still on that floor and by Halloween of 2001, we were all out at Issaquah. Halloween of 1999, I was still a TAM and I remember another TAM dressed up as a hockey player and he asked me if I was trying to work. Eddy is that guy I wrote about that worked in Las Vegas before Microsoft. He is from Budapest. I can't remember where Sharon was from originally but she is the one I wrote about that reminds me of Sarajevo. Eddy has one of those masks from that movie....can't remember the name now. Wasn't it something similar to "I Know What You Did Last Summer."? That movie came up one time when I was still a TAM. Something with Wally Simpson. I was leaving notes around his desk with that phrase on it. He said his son found the one I left in his closed laptop.

Vastly Different Pictures Painted Of Susan Smith

By Jesse J. Holland

AP

UNION, S.C. - Life in prison with the memories of her two drowned boys is torment enough for Susan Smith, her lawyer told jurors today, after a prosecutor portrayed her as a selfish, manipulative killer who should be executed.

"You have a choice, and you can make a better choice than what she made," defense lawyer David Bruck told jurors during closing arguments in the sentencing phase of the trial.

Holding a Bible in front of jurors and recalling a passage, Bruck said: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone
