TOWN&COUNTRY
Ronald Reagan's Daughter Patti Davis On the High Cost of Being a Political Daughter
She's one of the few people who know exactly how Chelsea and Ivanka feel.
By PATTI DAVIS OCT 31, 2016
In 1980, on election night, I stood on stage at the Century Plaza Hotel with my family, smiling at the assembled crowd as news commentators introduced us—the "new First Family." I'd borrowed a black dress from a girlfriend; I held my mother's hand and had one arm around my brother. I knew the images being recorded that night would be in every newspaper the following morning. It was an impression that might have endured if I had made different choices from that point forward. But I would soon replace those images with my anti-nuclear activities, my strident criticism of my father's policies, my decision to write about the discord in my family. The smiling girl in the black dress was replaced by a rebellious daughter acting out her issues in the public eye.
Neither image was the whole story.
In this current political season, we have seen Chelsea Clinton and Ivanka Trump sitting ringside at the meanest presidential debates America has ever known, each of them resolutely supporting their respective parent. They have both given carefully worded interviews, even campaign speeches. There are other enduring images of Chelsea from the past, of course. Remember the photo of her walking between her parents across the White House lawn during the Monica Lewinski scandal? She was the "bridge over troubled waters."
None of those images were the whole story.
When a good portion of your life is lived out in the public eye, you come to accept that the public will decide that certain images of you have told them all they need to know. Strangers will assume they now have insight into the parent-child relationship, the inner workings of the family, and they'll even imagine what private conversations are like. All of this is based on bright images captured by cameras under one of the biggest spotlights on earth. Moments in time, moments in a life, but absent of all the nuances, shadows and tangles that make up a life.
Some have found it strange that Chelsea and Ivanka could be friends when their parents are embroiled in such a bitter war. I haven't found it odd at all. They are members of the same tribe—people who are observed, judged, commented upon whenever they step into the spotlight, but who know all too well that who you are in the spotlight is only a small piece of your life. Behind the pictures of Chelsea and Ivanka are decades of family history, along with the complexities and challenges that all families face.
Those of us in this tribe learn to compartmentalize. We learn to draw boundaries around our private lives, because when the glare of the media finds you there are no boundaries. We will never be able to control what complete strangers decide about us, and we know their decisions will trail us forever.
Chelsea and Ivanka have had a particularly challenging task because both campaigns rely on them to humanize and soften their parents. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have nothing in common except for this one stunning similarity: many people don't like them. Who best to make them more likable than their daughters? It's a Herculean task though because, just as people have formed strong impressions of Chelsea and Ivanka, so too have they formed vivid impressions of the two candidates running for President. And the love of a daughter for her mother or her father is not really going to tip the scales.
By comparison, I had it easy. I was just expected to show up sometimes, and only for really big events like the convention and election night.
There will always be a public scrapbook for political families and their offspring. They've been captured at moments that may reveal something, but not everything. That iconic photo of Chelsea walking between her parents as their marriage, and the country, was rocked by her father's infidelities, does give you a glimpse into her maturity, her bond with both parents, her wish for some kind of healing. But we can't know the tears she may have cried, the despair and embarrassment she might have felt, not only over her father's cheating, but over the recklessness that was played out for the world to see. We don't know if she felt torn between her mother and her father.
Ivanka Trump's serene and confident assessment of her father show you a daughter who clearly loves and respects her parent. But we don't know how she felt when she heard her father's voice on the now-infamous Access Hollywood tape. We don't know how, or if, the family was rocked by his divorces and re-marriages.
We don't know if these two women, both mothers to young children, worry about how they will someday explain this 2016 campaign to their kids. A campaign that is nothing less than bloodletting. "What did you do in the war, Mommy?" might be the question they are both asked. You can't know their thoughts when they stand in lamplight and watch their children sleeping. Do they feel the weight of questions they know will come?
And you can't know that the 28-year-old woman who spoke at anti-nuclear rallies while her father was president once – long ago – sat with him and watched puffy white clouds push their way across the sky while he pointed out the animal shape of each cloud. You can't know that she used to say, "My daddy can do anything." You can't know about the tears that fell from her eyes onto his hand as death edged into the room and how her heart whispered to his that she would never stop telling him how sorry she was for her bad choices and the wounds they'd caused.
There is something else that those of us who have had to accept the harshness of the political spotlight know: It can be a lonely place. But you probably won't see that reflected in any photographs.

William J. Clinton
XLII President of the United States: 1993 - 2001
Remarks at the Dedication of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center
May 5, 1998
Thank you very much. Mrs. Reagan, Mr. Barram, Secretary Daley, Senator Moynihan, Delegate Norton, Senator Dole, Senator Lott, all the Members of Congress and the diplomatic corps who are here; Mr. Mayor; Secretary Shultz and General Powell and all the former members of the Reagan administration who are here and enjoying this great day; to Maureen and to the friends of President and Mrs. Reagan who are here. I'd like to begin by thanking Jim Freed and his team for a magnificent building. I think we all feel elevated in this building today.
I also want to say on behalf of Hillary and myself a special word of appreciation to Mrs. Reagan for being here. From her own pioneering efforts to keep our children safe from drugs to the elegance and charm that were the hallmarks of the Reagan White House, through her public and brave support for every family facing Alzheimer's, she has served our Nation exceedingly well, and we thank her.
The only thing that could make this day more special is if President Reagan could be here himself. But if you look at this atrium, I think we feel the essence of his presence: his unflagging optimism, his proud patriotism, his unabashed faith in the American people. I think every American who walks through this incredible space and lifts his or her eyes to the sky will feel that.
As Senator Moynihan just described, this building is the completion of a challenge issued 37 years ago by President Kennedy; I ought to say, and doggedly pursued for 37 years by Senator Moynihan. [Laughter] I must say, Senator, there were days when I drove by here week after week after week and saw only that vast hole in the ground, when I wondered if the "Moynihan hole" would ever become the Reagan Building. [Laughter] But sure enough, it did, and we thank you.
As you have heard, this building will house everything from an international trade center to international cultural activities to the Agency for International Development to the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars. It is fitting that the plaza on which we gather bears the name of President Wilson. And it is fitting that Presidents Wilson and Reagan are paired, for their work and, therefore, the activities which will be culminated in this building span much of what has become the American century.
Since President Reagan left office, the freedom and opportunity for which he stood have continued to spread. For a half century, American leaders of both parties waged a cold war against aggression and oppression. Today, freed from the yoke of totalitarianism, new democracies are emerging all around the world, enjoying newfound prosperity and long-awaited peace. More nations have claimed the fruits of this victory: free markets, free elections, plain freedom. And still more are struggling to do so.
Today we joy in that, but we cannot—indeed, we dare not—grow complacent. Today we recall President Reagan's resolve to fight for freedom and his understanding that American leadership in the world remains indispensable. It is fitting that a piece of the Berlin Wall is in this building. America's resolve and American ideals so clearly articulated by Ronald Reagan helped to bring that wall down.
But as we have seen repeatedly in the years since, the end of the cold war did not bring the end of the struggle for freedom and democracy, for human rights and opportunity. If the history of this American century has taught us anything, it is that we will either work to shape events or we will be shaped by them. We cannot be partly in the world. We cannot lead in fits and starts or only when we believe it suits our short-term interests. We must lead boldly, consistently, without reservation, because, as President Reagan repeatedly said, freedom is always in America's interests.
Our security and prosperity depend upon our willingness to be involved in the world. Woodrow Wilson said that Americans were participants in the life of the world, like it or not. But his countrymen did not listen to him, and as a result, there came the Great Depression, the rise of fascism, the Second World War. Our Nation then learned we could not withdraw from the world.
Then a new generation of Americans reached outward in the years after World War II, building new alliances of peace and new engines of prosperity: NATO, the United Nations, the IMF, the international trading system. It is no accident that during this period of great American leadership abroad we experienced unparalleled economic prosperity here at home. And it is no accident that freedom's great triumph came on America's watch.
Today, on the edge of a new century, the challenges we face are more diverse. But the values that guide America must remain the same. The globalization of commerce and the explosion of communications technology do not resolve all conflicts between nations; indeed, they create new challenges. They do not diminish our responsibility to lead, therefore; instead, they heighten it. Because today's possibilities are not tomorrow's guarantees, we must remain true to the commitment to lead that every American leader of both parties, especially Ronald Reagan and Woodrow Wilson, so clearly articulated in this 20th century.
For 50 years we fought for a Europe undivided and free. Last week the United States Senate took a profoundly important step toward that goal by welcoming Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic into NATO, an achievement I believe that would make Ronald Reagan proud. The alliance that helped to keep the peace for a half century now brings us closer than ever to that dream of a Europe united, democratic, and at peace.
Now Congress has other opportunities to fulfill the spirit and honor the legacy of the man whose name we affix to this building today. Congress has the opportunity to maintain our leadership by paying for our support to the IMF and settling our dues to the United Nations. I hope they will do it.
President Reagan once said we had made what he called an unbreakable commitment to the IMF, one that was unbreakable because, in this age of economic interdependence, an investment in the IMF is simply an investment in American prosperity. And we fought for 50 years for peace and security as part of the United Nations. In 1985, Ronald Reagan said the U.N. stands as the symbol of the hopes of all mankind for a more peaceful and productive world. "We must not," he said, "disappoint those hopes." We still must not disappoint those hopes.
President Reagan understood so clearly that America could not stand passively in the face of great change. He understood we had to embrace the obligations of leadership to build a better future for all. The commerce that will be conducted in this great building will be a testament to the opportunities in a truly global economy America has done so much to create. The academic and cultural activities that will be generated from people who work here will bring us closer together as well. Because the Agency for International Development will be here, we will never forget that the spark of enterprise and opportunity should be brought to the smallest, poorest villages in the world, for there, too, there are people of energy, intelligence, and hunger for freedom.
This is a great day for our country. This is a day of honoring the legacy of President Reagan, remembering the service of President Wilson, and rededicating ourselves to the often difficult but, ultimately, always rewarding work of America.
As I stand within the Reagan Building, I am confident that we will again make the right choices for America, that we will take up where President Reagan left off, to lead freedom's march boldly into the 21st century.
Thank you, and God bless you.
NOTE: The President spoke at 1:36 p.m. in the atrium of the Ronald Reagan Building. In his remarks, he referred to former First Lady Nancy Reagan

Profile : Croatia's 'Raving Nationalist' Now Seeks to Contain the Flames : The president of the Yugoslavian republic may hold the key to preserving the democracy he sparked and to averting civil war with neighboring Serbia.
October 30, 1990 CAROL J. WILLIAMS TIMES STAFF WRITER
ZAGREB, Yugoslavia — Like the arsonist turned firefighter, Croatian President Franjo Tudjman has set for himself the task of beating back the nationalist fires he stoked to win his republic's first multi-party election since World War II.
And whether the historically antagonistic Serbs and Croats: now the two most populous of Yugoslavia's half-dozen principal ethnic groups go to war for a fourth time this century may rest on whether Tudjman succeeds.
Opponents accuse Tudjman of mimicking Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic in fueling national passions to such an extreme as to risk a civil war.
But Tudjman, a retired army general and the essence of military discipline, appears to have a healthy wariness of the nationalist fever that threatens Croatian democracy as well as Yugoslav peace.
At a recent public rally in the republican capital of Zagreb, called to rehabilitate a 19th-Century Croatian hero nudged to obscurity by postwar Communists, Tudjman appealed to a flag-waving, mostly young crowd numbering in the tens of thousands to be cautious.
Tudjman drew wild cheers from the crowd when, in a reference to what is perceived here as Serbian provocation, he vowed: "We will never capitulate to the forces against democracy." But he also warned against hotheadedness in a tense standoff with Serbs living in Croatia, explaining that world public opinion will crush the state that fires the first shot in an ethnic war.
"He knows the long-term costs of a short-term indulgence," a Western diplomat observed of Tudjman. The same official had six months earlier described the Croatian leader as "a raving nationalist."
The diplomat is just one of the foreign observers in Zagreb who say they have changed their views of Tudjman, whose 68 years have traced the erratic path of modern Croatian history.
A committed Communist partisan under Marshal Josip Broz Tito during World War II, Tudjman rose to the rank of general in the postwar power structure before becoming disillusioned with one-party government in the 1960s.
He turned to academia, earning a doctorate in history, and wrote books until his activities with a pro-democracy group called Maspok drew the ire of Tito's Communists.
In 1967, he was stripped of all his posts and expelled from the Communist Party. He was imprisoned twice for spreading "hostile propaganda," in 1972-74 and in 1981.
The collapse of communism in Eastern Europe last year inspired him to form the Croatian Democratic Union, the party he led to victory over the incumbent Communists last spring.
Among other moves, the married father of three grown children quickly lifted restraints on religious worship, which added to the adoration shown him by Croatia's devoutly Roman Catholic population.
In an interview at his presidential office in Zagreb's Old Town, Tudjman played down the significance of nationalist outbursts in Croatia and claimed that Serbs in his republic have nothing to fear should Croatia gain the independence it seeks.
Said Tudjman: "The task is to create normal conditions for Serbs and Croats in Croatia," where about 12% of the republic's 5 million people are Serbian. "We will do our utmost to see this is done."
However, Tudjman claimed, under the old system Croatians have often been discriminated against in their own republic. He cited a major factory employing 1,000 people of which only 12 are Croats. He also contended that the republic's police forces are still predominantly Serbian.
"We are not at all after any kind of discrimination against Serbs," the president insisted. But he charged that "it is unnatural" for Serbs to hold down three to six times the percentage of top posts as they represent in the republic's population.
Overlaying the ethnic conflict, which dates to when Serbs and Croats were the respective front lines of the Ottoman Turkish and Austro-Hungarian empires, is the recently developed rift in political orientation as Yugoslavia gradually submits to multi-party democracy.
Serbia and the Yugoslav federal government, both headquartered in Belgrade, remain under monopoly Communist rule, while Croatia and Slovenia have held free elections this year.
Milosevic, head of Serbia's Communist Party, has sought to hold on to his absolute power by using it to reassert Serbian control over Albanians in the province of Kosovo and to demand autonomy for Serbian communities within Croatia.
Slovenia and Croatia have responded to Milosevic's flexing of the Serbian muscle by declaring their intention to break away from a Yugoslav federation that Serbs have always dominated.
Tudjman rode to victory in last spring's election by promising an end to federal control over Croatia, stirring up nationalist sentiment in the republic to a level unknown since the fanatical Ustasha regime that set up a fascist puppet state in 1941.

C.I.A. Doubtful on Serbian Sanctions
By DAVID BINDER,
Published: December 22, 1993
WASHINGTON, Dec. 21— In a new assessment, the Central Intelligence Agency has concluded that the economic embargo imposed on Serbia 18 months ago is likely to deteriorate and that the West will probably have to accept the ethnic partitioning of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In the analysis, the C.I.A. also says that there appears to be "no good and politically viable alternative" to the Serbian President, Slobodan Milosevic, who has been accused in the West of starting the ethnic violence that followed the breakup of the old Yugoslav federation.
He is "probably the only Serb leader the West can deal with and the only one capable of delivering a comprehensive solution" to the Bosnian crisis and Serbia's conflict with Croatia, the agency said.
The analysis was completed early this month, before the elections on Sunday in which Mr. Milosevic's party gained seats in the Serbian Parliament. Division of Bosnia
The Bush and Clinton Administrations have supported an integral Bosnia and Herzegovina, and have backed United Nations economic sanctions against Serbia to punish it for its role in the war in Bosnia. The Serbian Government has supplied the Serbian forces that have taken control of about two-thirds of Bosnia. Croatia, which has seized about 20 percent of the country, has avoided international economic sanctions.
A document drawn from the assessment, called a National Intelligence Estimate, says it will be "difficult or impossible to undo" the large population shifts that resulted when hundreds of thousands of Muslims, Serbs and Croats were driven from their homes in the fighting.
Last week, David Kanin, the C.I.A.'s chief analyst for Yugoslavia, alluded to plans by Serbian and Croatian leaders to annex portions of Bosnia and Herzegovina and to the prospect that Kosovo, an ethnically Albanian province of Serbia, will one day become part of Albania.
"I believe we are moving toward a greater Serbia, a greater Croatia and a greater Albania as result of this war," Mr. Kanin said during a roundtable discussion at the Woodrow Wilson Center, an arm of the Smithsonian Institution here. "The issue is whether to manage it or ignore it."
"We are not trying to manage it," Mr. Kanin said. "We're just ignoring it." Not View of Agency
Apprised of Mr. Kanin's public remarks, Kent Harrington, the C.I.A. director of public affairs, said: "We encourage our analysts to participate in academic discussions, but when they do they speak as individuals and do not represent intelligence views. Mr. Kanin's remarks were no exception."
Mr. Kanin's view is also contained in the written intelligence estimate, which sees Croatia absorbing parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and recovering some of Krajina, the area in Croatia that it lost to Serbs in 1991. It sees Serbia acquiring parts of Bosnia now held by Bosnian Serbs and part of Krajina. In addition, it forecasts that Albania might ultimately gain Kosovo and perhaps even some areas of Western Macedonia inhabited by ethnic Albanians.
The intelligence estimate appears to have prompted no reconsideration of United States policy on Bosnia.
"There is no debate on these issues," said a top-ranking State Department official who has read the C.I.A. assessment and who is involved in policymaking on the former Yugoslavia. "Sanctions are not a major policy issue. We don't question the boundaries of Kosovo. We are not in the business of redrawing borders." Breakup of Yugoslavia
The new assessment is not the first time the Central Intelligence Agency has confronted a gulf between its assessment of the Yugoslav situation and the attitude of Government policy makers. In November 1990, the agency completed an analysis predicting -- accurately -- that the Yugoslav federation would collapse as early as the summer of 1991 and that civil war could ensue. But Bush Administration policymakers chose not to act upon this assessment.
Yugoslavia began to fall apart in June 1991 when Slovenia and Croatia seceded from the federation, and fighting broke out immediately.
In its assessment, the C.I.A. says the sanctions are likely to deteriorate in coming months because Serbia's neighbors are no longer willing to bear the economic sacrifices entailed in enforcing them: severe restrictions on Danube River traffic and the closure of vital rail and road connections between the Middle East and Northern Europe.
Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia and Ukraine have complained bitterly in recent months to the United Nations that the sanctions are costing them billions of dollars' worth of trade and industrial production. The European Union has proposed easing the sanctions in exchange for territorial concessions by the Bosnian Serbs to the Muslim-led Bosnian Government.
But Administration policymakers remain uniformly in favor of maintaining sanctions on Serbia and Montenegro, its small partner in the truncated Yugoslav federation. Some even wish to tighten the embargo still further, according to officials involved in the policy process.

Croatian War of Independence
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Croatian War of Independence was fought from 1991 to 1995 between Croat forces loyal to the government of Croatia—which had declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY)—and the Serb-controlled Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and local Serb forces, with the JNA ending its combat operations in Croatia by 1992. In Croatia, the war is primarily referred to as the "Homeland War" and also as the "Greater-Serbian Aggression". In Serbian sources, "War in Croatia" is the most commonly in use and also the "War in Krajina"

T-1000
I saw the strangest pattern yet this morning.
I was asleep in bed and I awoke again one of many times in another miserable night of sleep and I looked over at the clock and I couldn't read the numbers because I was seeing some kind of complex pattern.
That's not the first time that's happened before but I had largely forgotten about it and besides that pattern was nothing I recall ever seeing before.
I blinked my eyes and I could then read the clock numbers. Then that complex pattern returned to my vision and I could not read the numbers. I thought about how my vision could be simply blurry but that pattern was unmistakable.
My guess is my superpowers are fully active again and have always been active. I simply choose to ignore those powers because that is the promise I made.
I had a lot of sleeping dreams last night but the only ones I can recall are on my mind a lot this morning.
And I thought just now to mention that the topic for my next report, some time later today, is a new detail I discovered only this morning.
So anyway I am dreaming while asleep and I have just finished my work shift somewhere, after walking out of what seemed to an elevator and what seemed to be The Dark Man had been poking his finger into my shoulder in my back and I walked away thinking I should have beaten him for that, and I am walking towards the parking lot and I am happy for a moment because I am heading out to finally do something I want to do for fun but the feeling quickly dawns on me in the dream that I am not going to get to do what I want to do. Then I can see the forward section of my red 1990 Mazda RX-7 and then I see what seems to be a security guard with a flashlight as he intersects perpendicularly to my path and I think now there is some other stuff I have forgotten. I don't feel like writing here about it all in detail but the point I recall next is that I am literally flying through the air under my own power. My RX-7 has become a red toy model I am holding. I am becoming annoyed because I am slowly losing the power of levitation flight and then I am on the ground again and walking along the sidewalk of some place I don't recognize now as I visualize the scene in my waking mind with its structures and traffic lights and there were a lot of variously colored lights and bright lights. At the end I was trying to pull myself up on some kind of structure on the sidewalk, as though there was a steep ramp that was normally a feature of the sidewalk and I had pulled myself up far enough to place that toy car, which almost seemed to be a fairly large USN F-14 at that point, on the top but I saw myself through my eyes and I was seriously struggling just to hold my position and not slip back down that ramp or whatever it was and I think that was the point where I woke up and got out of bed to sit at my desk and I recall from that point in the dream there were other people I was blocking because I couldn't pull myself up. In the distance ahead was a building housing the Variable Coffee company and in front of me as I struggled to pull myself up was a hardware device that was a node on their wireless network.
Oh yeah, and something else I recall is that I saw again that house I used to own and always when I dream about the plot is always different. Tracie was living in that house and for the first time I can recall I dreamed an accurate depiction of our sham marriage. I have forgotten many other details and I recall that I was selling the house but I think also Tracie was living there but I don't remember much else except something about feeling glad she could live there.
That might have been followed by me in the scene with the elevator and the parking lot.

Christian: (marking Kimber's 'flaws' with lipstick) Beauty is symmetry. Your right eye is half a millimetre higher you're your left, we could probably fix that with a malar augmentation, it's a cheekbone enhancement. I'd give you Botox here and here. That should provide a good life. Are you Irish?
Kimber: Part.
Christian: That explains the slightly flat boxer nose. We could shave the cartilege… give you that Christy Turlington thing. And the breasts could go one size bigger, a low C, and you could finish off with some abdominal…
(Kimber looks down; Christian moves her head back up) could finish off with some abdominal lipo. Pretty much.
(Christian turns Kimber round to face a mirror; she gasps when she sees what he's marked on her)
Christian: These are your problem areas.
Kimber: (after a pause) Am I really this ugly? I was Homecoming Queen.

Robert Caulfield: This coffee is horrible.
Judy: It's not that bad.
Robert Caulfield: It is. It's that bad.
Judy: Don't drink it.
Robert Caulfield: I'm always unwrapping things. I wake up and take the cellophane off the drinking glass. The soap's in a Holiday Inn wrapper. Even the toilet has a paper band on it with a nice little note from the hotel saying they put the band on the toilet for my protection. I'm always afraid that if I stay in bed too long the maid is going to walk in and put a paper band around me and the bedspread.
Judy: I don't mind.
Robert Caulfield: You wait. After a while, you won't know what city you're in. I defy anyone to tell me the difference between a Holiday Inn in Houston and the Holiday Inn in Cincinnati. The room's are the same. The music in the elevators is the same. Even the ladies with too much makeup in the coffee shop are the same. You never know where you are until after breakfast when you read the paper.
Judy: I don't mind it.
Robert Caulfield: Well, I don't mind it that much either, it's just that I would like it all to be with someone I cared for. Someone I could share it with.
Judy: Bullshit.
Robert Caulfield: You're so damn cynical.
Judy: I'm not cynical. It's just that your act could use a little polish.
Robert Caulfield: What do you mean by that?
Judy: Well, Liz Haller, for starters. Was it is the California primary? I believe you used the one about both of you being witnesses to the unfolding of history. You have to admit that is a little better than soap wrappers.
Robert Caulfield: You think all I want to do is jump you?
Judy: Yes.
Robert Caulfield: You wouldn't know sincerity if it ran over you.
Judy: Not if you were driving it.

Robert Caulfield: Mr Albaine, how much do you charge to dust a field?
Albain: Twenty five dollars.
Robert Caulfield: I'd like to hire your plane.

Robert Caulfield: You said you charged twenty five?
Albain: Twenty five dollars to dust a field, but you ain't got no field because you ain't no farmer, which means you ain't poor and I think you're a pervert!
1978 film "Capricorn One" DVD video:
Kay Brubaker: What are you after?
Robert Caulfield: I'm taking a terrible risk telling you this. I don't think your husband is the kind of man who makes mistakes no matter how far away he may be. I think he was trying to tell you something.
Kay Brubaker: What?
Robert Caulfield: What did you do at Flat Rock?
Kay Brubaker: Nothing much. We came home after one day because Charles got sick.
Robert Caulfield: What'd you do that one day?
Kay Brubaker: I don't remember. We took a tour of the town they had those tours and I don't remember we took some home movies.
Robert Caulfield: Do you have them?
Kay Brubaker: Yes.
Robert Caulfield: May I see them?
Kay Brubaker: Yes. They were making a movie the day we were there. Bru got a big kick out of it. He never knew it took so much time to just do one simple scene. Charles loved that one. He wasn't in the greatest mood though. He didn't know it but he was sick. Bru was fascinated with the detail. He couldn't get over how something so fake could look so real. He kept on saying that with that kind of technology you could convince people of almost anything.

Here comes 'Four.'
Watching again now the DVD for the 2007 "I Am Legend" the scene with the helicopters just before they seal off the island of Manhattan reminds me of another one of the series of imaginative thoughts I was having in the past week or longer. I think this was happening last weekend. It's hard to say precisely when that was happening because as I write this I am really not certain of the day of week currently. I want to say, without looking it up, today is Friday but I think today is Thursday. So anyway, there is a person here in the Seattle area that is going to be informed that a helicopter will be sent to transport that person out of the area just at the point when the zombies begin to turn into the monsters, for lack of a better description of their impending demise. I was thinking a lot about that. The operative detail was that person was informed by that person's handler than the transition would begin in the next hour or so and that person would only be safe if in close proximity to my physical presence. The reason is that the zombies are telepathic and only my mental consciousness will repel them so if that person is near me then I am some kind of shield that will keep that person from being attacked by the infectious zombies. So I thought through how we would maintain contact while we waited for the zombies to turn and I thought through a great many details such as how even traveling through the building was dangerous because, as I was thinking about, after those zombies turned, they gained superhuman strength and they are about four times faster than any human currently. The objective was for me to travel with that person to that field over by the post office near here and that was where the helicopter would arrive and pick up that person while I would stay here. I thought over how we should stop at that auto parts store and grab some goggles because the helicopter would kick up a lot of dirt in that field as it hovered. After that, I was supposed to drive up to the mall in Lynnwood where I would stay for seven days and there would be some people there to secure the location for my arrival and then they would leave by helicopter. The zombies would stay at least fifty yards from my physical presence so there was no real danger to me personally from then and every single human that stays in this area after the infection begins would become infected except for me. After seven days, I was supposed to leave the mall and I had to walk by foot because I was not allowed to drive because they did not want me showing up on satellite photos and since the zombies don't drive automobiles then the automobile I was driving would stand out in surveillance. So I had to walk and I was walking to that area where the three antennas are located on the hill above Seattle and I would stay there for the duration.
I imagined how there would be something close to two million zombies that would, incredibly after they had all turned into zombies within forty eight hours, converge on downtown Seattle and they would all pack into the buildings and the streets and they would all stay there while they entered some kind of inactive state. At some point, one third of those two millions zombies would eat another one third of that overall group and then the other one third would eat that one third, leaving one third of the original two millions zombies and that group would be some kind of superzombie group. They can't swim thought so as small groups of them begin to scout out into the country from their base in Seattle, they won't be able to cross over rivers. Unless they learn to swim.

God, that is what is happening to me now.
I would find the idea easy to state that during that five-year period I was convinced I was the living embodiment of Thomas Reagan that I knew somewhere deep in my mind that was not true. So I won't dwell on that too much because what would really now be the point of saying "I knew it." I can think of some examples of thoughts I had that were consistent with a tiny part of my mind that I guess was trying to resist that overpowering force in my mind confusing me about my true identity.
The dialog referenced below is written from my perspective when I become a time traveler and begin traveling backwards in time.
I write about that notion now because I have been thinking in the past few minutes and longer about the impending zombie apocalypse that will literally emerge first on this planet here in King County Washington State. I was thinking about how my power of resistance to those zombies will be primarily in the fact that I will be invisible to their zombie senses. To them, I will be no different than a tree or if I am walking around then I am no different than an automobile that has no person at the wheel or sitting in the car while it rolls along the road. I will also have another self-defense mechanism in that my presence will divert away the zombies. The necessity of that self-defense mechanism is that it keeps me from getting trapped someplace that is surrounded by a large pack of zombies. For instance, if there are non-infected human beings inside the building I am in, in downtown Seattle, for instance, then there is the possibility that ten thousand zombies could congregate along every door and window of that building and even though the zombies cannot sense my presence I would still be trapped in the building. So if I come close the zombies then they will divert away from my presence.
Also, the virus or whatever it is that causes the zombie outbreak to literally happen here in King County Washington State will change over time. The second stage is airborne and the non-infected human beings contract the plague by breathing the air that contains the plague delivery mechanism. Then, after a point has been reached where the number of literal zombies exceeds a certain number then the plague delivery mechanism becomes transmitted by the telepathy of the brains of the zombies. Other than me, no one in King County Washington State can hide from the zombies after that point.

I have thought several times about a dream I had before waking up earlier today in the morning. I think about it again now, especially considering how my dreams are relevant to observations I made later in the day after having the dream, after watching on television the scene I reference now. The scene only lasted for probably a second or two of dreaming but I have thought of it several times today because of the good feeling I had during the dream. I cannot recall how it started out but the part I remember is that I seemed to be entering an office building and I got a pass to clip to my uniform shirt and I had full access to the building. What I did though is sit in a chair in the lobby, which I can only partially visualize and I could have gone on in but I was just sitting there watching people enter and leave and I think that is what I wanted to do. I looked at my watch. I cannot recall the precise time I saw in the dream but my watch might have read 12:38 PM. I sat there for a while and if I would have wrote about this dream back in early 2006 I would have wrote about how the narrator was talking to me in the dream but in the dream, no one spoke to me during that series of scenes. There almost seemed to be comments about why I was sitting there when I could go in to the office area and I had full access to that building. I was wearing a United States military uniform in the dream and after waking up I decided I was wearing a dress white United States Marine Corps officers uniform that is no longer in service. The uniform was very similar to the United States Navy officers ceremonial dress uniform but what I read earlier today is that uniform was phased in 1998, or maybe 2000. So anyway I was clearly wearing a United States military uniform and I got up from the chair in the lobby and I started walking through the office section and I was very glad to be there. I have been left with the sense all day about how I was back home. I have also been thinking that was some kind of office that I worked out of and that is here in the United States and I had been gone for a while and I was glad to be back and I was walking around and no one had realized yet that I was back. That was how the dream ended. I was walking around through the office and I noted that someone I knew didn't work in the same place. I was going somewhere specific but that was where the dream ended and I woke up and I think that was when I got up out of bed.
But anyway, as I read back through the scene I remember that before that scene was something about me being trapped in someplace that seemed to be a deep well. I was aware that I was perched on a surface and there was very dark water just below me in reach and I was worried about what was under that surface. But I was definitely trapped in a well, a long vertical cylinder of a wall made of stones and there seemed to be just enough lighting to see my surroundings. At one point I caught a frog. I was keeping it because I might have had to use it for food. But I didn't have to because I was only trapped down there for eight days without food and water and I didn't want to eat the frog, which was the only source of possible food that presented itself to me during that time I was trapped in the well. So then the part in the office building seemed to happen.

Everything had been going so right one day, and then the next, everything just started going so wrong. It seemed as soon as I touched home soil again, everything just started falling apart. I was standing there and for the first time in my life, at least that I was aware, I felt lonely. I had been alone a lot in my life to that point, but this was the first time I could really label the feeling. That lonely experience and that terrifing experience are similar in some ways but dissimilar in other ways. The loneliness I felt that day after returning home was just sort of a peak I guess, a new level of an emotion that I had felt many times in my life but never really understood. The terror feeling on the hand, was pretty new. The lonely experience just produced a scar, while the terror feeling, I don't know what the result of that experience is, maybe to reinforce my desire to maintain peace in my life, of which people have been trying to drive me away from, although why they want to provoke me I don't know.

September 22, 1997
Mr. President, Secretary-General, distinguished guests: Five years ago, when I first addressed this Assembly, the cold war had only just ended, and the transition to a new era was beginning. Now, together, we are making that historic transition.
Behind us we leave a century full of humanity's capacity for the worst and its genius for the best. Before us, at the dawn of a new millennium, we can envision a new era that escapes the 20th century's darkest moments, fulfills its most brilliant possibilities, and crosses frontiers yet unimagined.
We are off to a promising start.

DONALD TRUMP (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Cock-a-doodle-doo, folks. I'm Donald Trump, and there's two things in the world I love: a good deal and a good meal. So when I drove by a defunct Meineke muffler shop in Inglewood, New Jersey, I knew what I had to do. I had buy it on the cheap and convert it into a restaurant specializing in buffalo chicken wings. So I did.
And it's the most important thing I've ever done in my entire life. So please, join me at Donald Trump's House of Wings.

I was feeling especially homesick this day last year. It is quite remarkable when I look back and see what I wrote considering what I am now thinking. But it also reminds me of unpleasant reality too. It was only a few days later that they kicked me out of here to the Pioneer Square gulag. I didn’t protest that much because, well, my head was still pretty screwed from almost dying from that bowel obstruction.

Those vague “memories” of people joking about the dead Challenger astronauts probably reflect the interrogation by the Libyans in 1986. The drugged me up to the point of hallucination, and then started to pretend they were Americans who then tormented me, trying to break my resistance.

As I looked at this image, I started to think about how much smaller the astronaut on the left looks from the astronaut on the right. It could be because the one on the right is closer to the camera or it could be because the astronaut on the left is me when I was ten years old.

The astronaut on the left is 21 units tall and the astronaut on the right is 25 units tall. The left shadow is 23 units and the right shadow is 32 units at least, but I wonder if the terrain is affecting those shadows.

According to my calculations, the astronaut on the left was 80% as tall as the astronaut on the right. And I am now thinking the terrain was flat and the appearance of a slope was actually produced by the lunar soil being disturbed which created darker areas. Anyway, if the astronaut on the right was 6 feet tall, the left astronaut would be about 4.8 feet tall.

And here now I sit, in a prison, by myself, blocked from going home by cowards, a stunning demonstration of the greed and cowardice of those spectator leechs, a stunning demonstation of the cowards that leech off the daring. Here are years of testimony, I am now convinced, that humans are fundamentally bad.

The drive back here to Renton was just as interesting as the drive out there yesterday. After driving a car for the first time in over 8 years I find that I don’t really miss it that much. Especially the gas prices!
That other apartment does interest me.
Is that another one that is presently occupied?
Same time for move-in?
I know that I’ll sleep much better on the top floor. I have a sunken floor now here in Renton and I get up many times during the night looking around corners.

Santa: Nice try. But my head was built with paradox-absorbing crumple-zones.

The Stand - The Complete & Uncut Edition
Chapter 38
George McDougall lived in Nyack, New York. He had been a teacher of high school mathematics, specializing in remedial work. He and his wife had been practicing Catholics, and Harriett McDougall had borne him eleven children, nine boys and two girls. So between June 22, when his nine-year-old son Jeff had succumbed to what was then diagnosed as “flu-related pneumonia,” and June 29, when his sixteen-year-old daughter Patricia (and oh God she had been so young and so achingly beautiful) had succumbed to what everyone—those that were left—was then calling tube-neck, he had seen the twelve people he loved best in the world pass away while he himself remained healthy and feeling fine. He had joked at school about not being able to remember all his kids’ names, but the order of their passing was engraved on his memory: Jeff on the twenty-second, Marty and Helen on the twenty-third, his wife Harriett and Bill and George, Jr., and Robert and Stan on the twenty-fourth, Richard on the twenty-fifth, Danny on the twenty-seventh, three-year-old Frank on the twenty-eighth, and finally Pat—and Pat had seemed to be getting better, right up to the end.
George thought he would go mad.
He had begun jogging ten years before, on his doctor’s advice. He didn’t play tennis or handball, paid a kid (one of his, of course) to mow the lawn, and usually drove to the corner store when Harriett needed a loaf of bread. You’re putting on weight, Dr. Warner had said. Lead in the seat. No good for your heart. Try jogging.
So he had gotten a sweatsuit and had gone jogging every night, for short distances at the start, then longer and longer ones. At first he’d felt self-conscious, sure that the neighbors must be tapping their foreheads and rolling their eyes, and then a couple of the men that he had only known to wave to when they were out watering their lawns came and asked if they could join him—probably there was safety in numbers. By that time, George’s two oldest boys had also joined in. It became a sort of neighborhood thing, and although the membership was always evolving as people dropped in and dropped out, it stayed a neighborhood thing.
Now that everyone was gone, he still jogged. Every day. For hours. It was only when he was jogging, concentrating on nothing more than the thud of his tennis shoes on the sidewalk and the swing of his arms and his steady harsh respiration, that he lost that feeling of impending madness. He could not commit suicide because as a practicing Catholic he knew that suicide was a mortal sin and God must be saving him for something, so he jogged. Yesterday he had jogged for almost six hours, until he was completely out of breath and almost retching with exhaustion. He was fifty-one, not a young man anymore, and he supposed that so much running was not good for him, but in another, more important way, it was the only thing that was any good.
So he had gotten up this morning at first light after a mostly sleepless night (the thought that played over and over in his mind was: Jeff-Marty-Helen-Harriett-Bill-George-Junior-Robert-Stanley-Richard-Danny-Frank-Patty-and-I-thought-she-was-getting-better) and put on his sweatsuit. He went out and began to jog up and down the deserted streets of Nyack, his feet sometimes gritting on broken glass, once leaping over a TV set that lay shattered on the pavement, taking him past residential streets where the shades were drawn and also past the horrible three-car crash at the Main Street intersection.
He jogged at first, but it became necessary to run faster and faster to keep the thoughts behind him. He jogged and then he trotted and then he ran and finally he sprinted, a fifty-one-year-old man with gray hair in a gray sweatsuit and white tennis shoes, fleeing up and down empty streets as if all the devils of hell were after him. At quarter past eleven he suffered a massive coronary thrombosis and fell down dead on the corner of Oak and Pine, near a fire plug. The expression on his face was very like gratitude.
