This might be it. Steel River is listed on there too. I remember on one of the first days I was up there, a helicopter flew near me. I figured it was probably a camera crew out to get some B-roll footage of the High Steel Bridge that they could use after they found my corpse in the river.

Discovery Prepares For Return

Telescope`s Systems Are Revived

April 29, 1990 By Jean Latz Griffin, Chicago Tribune.

CAPE CANAVERAL, FLA. — Shuttle Discovery, after what flight controllers called a ``nearly flawless mission,`` prepared to return to Earth on Sunday, although some concern over wind conditions at Edwards Air Force Base in California might push the landing back to Monday.

``It`s time now for the astronauts to pack up their camping gear and come home,`` said Wayne Hale, flight engineer at Johnson Flight Center in Houston. ``This has been a very clean mission, nearly flawless.``

But Discovery`s main payload, the Hubble space telescope, was not as trouble-free as the space shuttle that carried it to orbit 380 miles above the Earth.

The telescope`s computer was finally convinced early Saturday that the bounces and jiggles that had sent it into what is called a ``safe mode`` on Friday, in which it would accept few commands from Earth, were no longer a threat.

After most of Hubble`s sophisticated systems were brought back up, analysts and scientists at Goddard and Marshall space flight centers in Maryland and Alabama worked to right the high-gain antennae, crucial for the telescope to send back scientific data.

Computer programmers tried to use one of the high-gain antennas and tell the other antenna, which had caused the problem on Friday, to keep its position. But when they tried moving the good antenna, they noticed the other antenna also was turning.

Jean Olivier, a deputy project manager for Hubble, said various options are being considered to aim the good antenna without moving the bad one. If computer programs must be adapted to get data from just one antenna, ``it will be somewhat of a hit.``

Ground controllers had hoped to get the bugs worked out by Sunday and turn much of the project over to the Space Telescope Science Institute at Johns Hopkins University, a consortium set up to operate the telescope.

Ground controllers must also figure out how to keep Hubble`s bodyguard computer from overreacting to vibrations in the telescope`s high-gain antennas and lens cap so it won`t shut the telescope down unnecessarily.

Equally important, they must adjust the high-gain antennas so they can more accurately lock onto the communications satellites that they will use to send scientific data back to Earth.

When all that is done, scientists will begin to send instructions to the telescope to point its massive eye toward one selected star cluster, gather its light, and send back the long awaited first picture.

``There may be starlight coming down the shaft, but it is not being processed,`` said Michael Harrington, flight engineer at Goddard. ``None of the instruments are turned on, and there is a good chance that we are not even pointing at our first target.``

The first picture is expected in about a week to 10 days. But it will be seven to eight months before the telescope and its instruments are fine-tuned enough to produce the quality of photographs the astronomers have been waiting for nearly 20 years to see.

``They can`t just pick up from where they were when the computer put Hubble in safe mode,`` said Allen Kenitzer, NASA spokesman at Goddard. ``They have to write new plans, new schedules.``

When Discovery lands at Edwards, now scheduled for 8:49 a.m. CDT Sunday, it is to come in over Santa Barbara at four and a half times the speed of sound, swerve slightly north and set down on Edward`s dry lake bed in the Mojave Desert.

Because it is traveling higher than any shuttle has gone, it will have the longest free fall from orbit before entering the atmosphere.

Discovery`s astronauts, all veterans of previous flights, have often remarked on the views from such a high orbit.

``That`s Texas, right there,`` said mission specialist Kathryn Sullivan.

``It seems so close, you have to stop and think how high up we are.``

Shuttle Will Give New Brakes A Test

April 29, 1990 By John J. Glisch of The Sentinel Staff

CAPE CANAVERAL — With the Hubble Space Telescope left behind, the shuttle Discovery was scheduled to glide home to California today and test new brakes that could lead to shuttles again landing at Kennedy Space Center.

Discovery and its five astronauts were set to land at Edwards Air Force Base at 9:49 a.m. EDT, ending a highly successful mission to deliver the most important and expensive payload a shuttle has ever carried into space.

High winds at Edwards could delay the landing, however, and keep the shuttle in orbit another day. A decision was to be made this morning before Discovery fires its re-entry engines.

''We are concerned about the weather a little bit,'' shuttle flight director Wayne Hale said Saturday. ''We'll have to watch it carefully, but we're going to give it a try. We've got a 50-50 chance.''

Enough supplies are aboard Discovery to stay in orbit three extra days so the landing could be delayed as late as Wednesday if needed, Hale said.

The astronauts packed up Saturday in preparation for their trip home. The cargo they delivered, the $1.6 billion telescope, was reactivated Saturday after an unexpected 20-hour shutdown. Technical glitches had put the telescope in a ''safe'' mode that automatically deactivated most of its systems.

Stargate: The Movie (1994)

RA
You have come here to destroy me.

[Two servants carry the bomb on a platter, setting it down between the throne and the prisoners.]

DANIEL
What is that? That's a bomb, isn't it. That's what you were looking for. What the hell were you thinking? What'd you come here for?

[O'Neil remains stoic and does not respond. Ra gestures to Anubis and gives an order in the alien tongue. Anubis presses a button on the side of his helmet. As he turns to the prisoners, it retracts, showing a human head. The other guards do so also. Ra too retracts his ornate pharoah headpiece, revealing himself to be the same boy taken by the Stargate so many millenia ago. The guards kneel beside Daniel and O'Neil.]

[O'Neil looks from Ra to the guard, then reaches out, knocking the guard back and taking his staff weapon. He fires and kills one of the guards, but hasn't quite turned before the other has his weapon primed. Daniel stands between the guard and O'Neil, raising his arms out wide.]

DANIEL
Wait! Na-ney! Stop! No!

[The guard fires.]

DANIEL
No!

[Daniel is killed by the staff blast. Immediately, the children rush and surround Ra, forming a human shield while O'Neil tries to fire. He hesitates, unwilling to shoot children. Anubis knocks O'Neil with the blunt side of the weapon, knocking him down. He continues to beat O'Neil with the weapon until Ra tells him to stop. Ra comes down from his throne. He looks at the unconscious O'Neil, then glares at Anubis with glowing eyes. He next moves to Daniel's body, noting and holding the Eye of Ra necklace around Daniel's neck.]

EXT—NAGADA CITY, DAY

[People spot the death gliders' approach. One sounds an alarm on a large horn. Kasuf leaves his tent and looks up in alarm. He yells out warnings. The gates to the city close. The ships fire down on the city, shooting blasts and using some intercoms to speak to the people. Kasuf kneels beseechingly, but the ships continue to blast away, killing many and doing great damage to the town. After a few passes, the death gliders leave.]

[Skaara and the boys arrive only to see the destruction. He searches the bodies in shock. He finds Shau'ri tending to an injured girl. Shau'ri herself is bleeding from her head.]

SKAARA
Shau'ri. Shau'ri. What happened here?

SHAU'RI
Ra punished us.

Stargate: The Movie (1994)

EXT—ALIEN PYRAMID, NIGHT

INT—SARCOPHAGUS CHAMBER, RA'S SHIP

[Daniel takes a large gulp of air and sits up, pulling some sheer material off his face. He looks around, gulping breaths while getting his bearings. He then looks at his side where the staff blast struck him. The material is still torn, but his body is completely healed, not even leaving a scar. He steps out of the sarcophagus watching it close itself.]

[Behind him, a boy approaches, carrying a cat. He laughs at Daniel. { or: he giggles about Daniel. Perhaps the servants repaired Daniel without Ra's knowledge and they are pleased to learn that Ra is not the "God" he claims to be } When Daniel turns, he moves away. Daniel follows him.]

INT—THRONE ROOM, RA'S SHIP

[The boy leaves the cat on the throne and runs away. Daniel walks down the staircase behind the throne, stopping and petting the cat. He looks around for the boy, then follows him.]

INT—BATHING ROOM, RA'S SHIP

[Ra steps out of his tub, being dried and clothed by servants. Daniel enters the room, stepping through several curtains. Ra turns in profile, smiling before walking away without acknowledging Daniel.]

INT—BED CHAMBER, RA'S SHIP

[They move into another area, the servants continuing to layer Ra with more clothing and jewelry.]

DANIEL
I was dead?

[Ra looks directly at him at this point.]

RA
That is why I chose your race...your bodies...so easy to repair. You have advanced much—harnessed the power of the atom.

[Daniel approaches, noticing the bomb and several of his books, opened and strewn about.]

DANIEL
What are you going to do?

RA
You should not have reopened the gate. Soon, I will send your weapon back to your world with a shipment of our mineral which will increase your weapon's destructive power a hundred fold.

[He stretches out his arms for the servants to adorn his arms and fingers with the jewelry.]

DANIEL
Why would you do that?

RA
I created your civilization. Now, I will destroy it.

[Ra stands, and after getting adorned with a final ornamental breastplate, starts walking slowly to Daniel.]

RA
But before my workers question my authority, you will prove that I am their one god by killing your companions.

DANIEL
If I refuse?

RA
Then I will destroy you, and all who have seen you.

[He stands in front of Daniel, grabbing his necklace and yanking it off him while his eyes glow with anger.]

RA
There can be only one Ra!

LOVEJOY: I urge every halfway decent member of our community to gather up all merchandise that bears the likeness of Krusty, that clown prince of corruption, and join me in a public burning!

KENT BROCKMAN: So, is Krusty the Clown about to trade in his baggy pants for the relatively snug uniform of Springfield Penitentiary? We'll find out tomorrow...when his trial begins.

The program ends with a picture of Krusty, in jail clothes looking haggard and tired. The photo becomes real. Krusty is photographed as he walks off a prisoner container truck.

REPORTERS: Uh, what kind of gun did you use? Did you use an accomplice? Will you plead insanity?

Bart and Lisa stand in the large crowd of people, staring at Krusty as he is led into the courthouse.

BART: Look at him. His clothes are so drab.

LISA: His face is so flesh-colored and sad.

BART: And his feet, they're so small. Say it ain't so, Krusty.

KRUSTY'S LAWYER: My client has no comment at this time.

KRUSTY: I didn't do it!

The crowd laughs

The ship of Theseus, also known as Theseus' paradox, is a thought experiment that raises the question of whether an object that has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object. The paradox is most notably recorded by Plutarch in Life of Theseus from the late first century. Plutarch asked whether a ship that had been restored by replacing every single wooden part remained the same ship.

COCHRANE: No, the Companion did. I told it I'd die of loneliness. I thought it would release me. Instead, it brought you here.

[Montana settlement]

LAFORGE: There she is. She's beautiful. ...All right. Take a look.

COCHRANE: Well, well, well. What have we got here? ...I love a good peep show.

(Cochrane looks through a telescope and sees the Enterprise orbiting)

COCHRANE: Ha, ha, ha. That's a trick. Ha, ha, ha. How'd you do that?

LAFORGE: It's your telescope.

TROI: That's our ship. The Enterprise.

COCHRANE: And Lily's up there right now?

TROI (OC): That's right.

COCHRANE: Can I talk to her?

RIKER: We've lost contact with the Enterprise. We don't know why yet.

Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

BARCLAY: I never imagined I'd be meeting the man who invented the warp drive.

LAFORGE: Reg!

BARCLAY: I'm sorry. Right. ...Thanks.

COCHRANE: Do they have to keep doing this?

LAFORGE: It's just a little hero worship, Doctor. To tell you the truth I can't say I blame them. We all grew up hearing about what you did. Or what you're about to do. You know I probably shouldn't be telling you this but I went to Zefram Cochrane High School.

COCHRANE: Really?

LAFORGE: You know? I wish I had a picture of this.

COCHRANE: What?

LAFORGE: Oh well, you see, in the future this whole area becomes an historical monument. You're standing almost on the exact spot where your statue's gonna be.

COCHRANE: Statue?

RIKER: Doctor!

COCHRANE: You stay away from me.

RIKER: We don't have time for this.

(as Cochrane runs away Riker stuns him with his phaser)

RIKER: You told him about the statue?
