YOUNG'S QUARTERS. Johansen watches as Young manages to move his feet up and down.

JOHANSEN: That's very good, sir. It's a very good sign.

YOUNG: Yeah. I don't have time for this, do I?

JOHANSEN: Two problems: we're venting atmosphere from the damaged shuttle and even if we could seal it off, the life support system in this ship is past its expiration date. We'll build up CO2 to lethal levels within a day.

YOUNG: That explains the headache.

JOHANSEN: You already had one.

SCOTT: OK, so you've figured out where they keep the Kinos. What else have you figured out?

(He walks away without waiting for a reply. Eli looks round at the Kino, then follows after him. The Kino follows along behind him like a puppy.)

WALLACE: Give me a break, man. This is my second spaceship - and my first was yesterday!

SCOTT: I know. Icarus was my first S.G.C. assignment after training. I haven't been at this much longer than you have.

WALLACE: Huh! Did they beam you out of your house?!

SCOTT: No - you got me there!

WALLACE: D'you have any food on you?

SCOTT: No.

WALLACE: Tylenol?

SCOTT: Headache?

WALLACE: Huh - yeah!

SCOTT: Me too.

YOUNG'S QUARTERS. Johansen is pulling a blanket over the colonel.

JOHANSEN: Neurapraxia is a temporary paralysis that can follow a concussive injury.

YOUNG: But you don't know?

JOHANSEN: You'd need an M.R.I. and a qualified doctor who knows how to read it to know for sure if there's spinal damage. We don't have either. Hopefully it's just the nerves in shock. Best I can do is insist that you remain still.

YOUNG: Your tour was over two weeks ago.

(She chuckles briefly, rolling her eyes as if to say, 'Don't I know it!')

YOUNG: You should be in some classroom in San Diego.

JOHANSEN: Seattle. That's where my scholarship was.

YOUNG: I'm sorry.

JOHANSEN: That part's not your fault.

YOUNG: Tell Rush I wanna see him.

JOHANSEN: Yes, sir.

JAMES: What's going on?

GREER: I don't know, man. The air filter's full of crap. Come on - they want us to keep looking.

JAMES: Let's go.

FRANKLIN: All right, OK.

GATEROOM. Chloe walks into the room just as Adam Brody is testing the sludge from the scrubber.

BRODY: Alkaline.

JOHANSEN: Everyone's heart rates are elevated; people are reporting headaches. It has to be.

SCOTT: What?

BRODY: The used-up residue of whatever magic compound the Ancients used to scrub CO2 from the air.

SCOTT: So now we have two big problems relating to the life support.

RUSH: Our first priority must be to seal off any of the leaks. If we can manage that, then we can maybe buy ourselves a day or so before the build-up of CO2 kills us.

SCOTT: As it stands, how much time do we have?

RUSH: I don't know.

BRODY: A couple of hours at most.

WALLACE: Huh! Awesome(!)

RUSH: Brody, there was some medical-grade soda lime in the supply manifest?

PALMER: It never made it.

RUSH: It's a pity.

(He takes out his notebook from his jacket and extracts the pencil from the spine. Squatting down to the sludge, he pokes through it with the pencil.)

RUSH: Well, in a ship this old, there's bound to be systems past their design life.

SCOTT: OK, so let's say we find the leaks. Can you fix this?

RUSH (shaking his head): I doubt this stuff can be cooked off. Perhaps if there were stores of this substance in the clean form, or something else capable of CO2 sequestration - calcium carbonate, lithium hydroxide - then yes, if.

SCOTT: OK, well, that's not gonna matter because you're gonna get the Gate dialled back to Earth before this becomes an issue, Rush.

RUSH (standing up): Lieutenant ...

SCOTT: Right?

RUSH: That's the kind of thing you're taught to say in officer training, presumably for the benefit of those that don't know any better.

Leoben: What is it about this place? What's it doing to me?

Adama: Must be your allergies.

Leoben: I don't have allergies.

Adama: I didn't think so. What you got are silica pathways to the brain, or whatever it is you call that thing you pretend to think with. It's decomposing as we speak.

Leoben: It's the storm, isn't it? It puts out something. Something you discovered has an effect on Cylon technology. That's it, isn't it? And this is a refuge, that's why you put a fleet out here. Last ditch effort to hide from the Cylon attack. Right, well, that's not enough Adama. I've been here for hours. Once they find you, it won't take them that long to destroy you. Traveling Nuclear Scientists Are Targeted for Secrets, Report Says

June 26, 2000 From Associated Press

WASHINGTON — U.S. nuclear scientists traveling abroad have reported being targeted by foreign agents who tried to obtain secrets by bugging hotel rooms, rifling briefcases and computers, or offering sexual favors, congressional investigators say.

A report based on information gathered by the Energy Department's counterintelligence office identified at least 75 such cases in recent years involving trips by scientists from federal weapons labs.

The Energy Department said Sunday it agreed with the findings, which were largely based on data the department provided. The scientists' names and countries involved were deleted.

"What they [the scientists] were reporting is that they were approached by someone," Deputy Energy Secretary T.J. Glauthier said in an interview Sunday.

He said there is no evidence that secrets were compromised in any of the incidents cited by the General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of Congress.

Glauthier acknowledged that the incidents demonstrate the degree to which research scientists from the weapons labs are targets of foreign intelligence operatives.

He said thousands of trips are made abroad annually by scientists working in a wide variety of disciplines at the labs, including many involved in nuclear weapons research.

The report, expected to be formally released this week, said foreign travel "can greatly benefit" the country through scientific exchanges. It also said some travelers "may not be receiving the necessary preparation to recognize and thwart espionage."

A copy of the report, requested by Reps. Benjamin A. Gilman (R-N.Y.) and Tim Roemer (D-Ind.), was obtained Sunday by Associated Press. Its contents were first reported in Sunday's Washington Post.

Glauthier said that in 1998, the Energy Department increased efforts to make scientists more aware of the potential risks when traveling abroad. The agency agreed with the need to "sensitize" scientists about the risk, he said.

The report covered incidents reported from late 1995 to late 1998 by scientists from nuclear weapons facilities in New Mexico, California and Tennessee.

Foreign intelligence operatives "used a variety of methods" from bugging hotel and conference rooms to breaking into scientists' computers and personal belongings, and casually eavesdropping on conversations, the GAO said. It said the incidents involved trips not only to "sensitive" countries--Russia, China and Pakistan, for example--but also other nations.

As a result, the GAO urged the Energy Department to establish procedures to more closely monitor and advise scientists of the risks involving all foreign travel and not only those to sensitive nations.

"Foreign intelligence entities can operate worldwide," it said.

NASA Is Working on New Vision for Missions

December 05, 2003 From Associated Press

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — After decades of watching astronauts circle Earth, space visionaries finally have reason for optimism: NASA and other agencies are working with the White House on a bold, new course of exploration.

Whether the destination is the moon or Mars -- or whether any plan actually makes liftoff -- remains to be seen. For space buffs, just to get a defined mission would be cause for hope.

"Put it this way: I think we have to continue to move forward and, at least with the discussion that's going on, that's good," said Everett Gibson, a NASA scientist who studied moon rocks from the Apollo astronauts and the Mars meteorite that may hold evidence of past life on the Red Planet.

Gibson is currently involved with the European-built Mars probe that's on its way to a Christmas Day landing. Two NASA rovers are right behind, scheduled to land on Mars in January.

Neither the White House nor NASA will discuss specifics. Nor will they answer the hopes of optimists who have been speculating for weeks that President Bush might use the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' flight on Dec. 17 to make a space announcement.

They will only say the interagency effort began in July. "That work is ongoing and will continue," said Glenn Mahone, NASA's chief spokesman.

It was the Columbia tragedy that helped force a discussion of where NASA should venture beyond the space shuttle and international space station. The panel that investigated the Columbia accident called for a clearly defined long-term mission -- a national vision for space that has been missing for three decades.

Gibson sides with the humans-back-to-the-moon-then-on-to-Mars crowd.

"The moon can be used as a development ground to allow us to better operate on Mars," Gibson said this week.

Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.), a member of the House Science Committee, also favors a human return to the moon.

He said he made his views known last month to Vice President Dick Cheney, who is heading a task force on the future of spaceflight.

PINK FLOYD

"High Hopes"

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun

Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut

There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

The grass was greener
The light was brighter
With friends surrounded
The nights of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
